Odd battery behavior and strange recalibration results

I have a 14" iBook G4, just over a year and a half old, and have been having problems lately with my battery. I think I am at the point where I just need to buy a new one, but I wanted to know if anyone had any extra advice or had the same problems as me. Information:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1584
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1584
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 16405
Cycle Count: 229
I know my cycle count is high, which has something to do with it, but lately my full charge capacity has been dropping dramatically. I did a textbook Apple battery recalibration last night following all instructions, and my full charge capacity DROPPED from 1840 to the above stated 1584. Is this normal? My cycle count is high, but it isn't as high as what would be reflected in my charge capacity, correct? Can anyone help me out or have any ideas? Is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a new battery?
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 14"

That's possible, I suppose but more likely:
Overcharing lithium batteries is really bad. So bad that well designed devices turn off charging when the capacity is reached. At this point, I believe one of two things can happen. The device might be powered by the charger, however with the battery no longer receiving any charge, or (easier) the device can run on the battery after the charger has been disabled. The plug icon in the battery icon indicates charger not charging but connected. I think the iPhone is smart enough to run off the charger while not charging, however batteries can lose charge over time even when they are not being used.
The computer takes longer to charge the battery so it spends less time connected but not being charged than when you use the wall plug. I've seen this on a Palm PDA as well, although a little more dramatic. I believe the Palm was not smart enough to run off the charger and instead ran of the battery. Depending on when you disconnected, it could be truly fully charged or a few % low.

  • 4G 20GB iPod - odd battery behavior

    Hi everyone,
After spending the better part of this evening/night looking at these discussion forums, I haven't seen any posts that are quite the same as the problem I'm experiencing.
I've had my iPod for just over a year, and we all know what that means, but I'm convinced it's not a major thing and something I can probably fix myself.
Enough suspense. About a month ago, I downloaded the iPod updater (I believe the 9/22/05 version) and installed it, and things seemed fine until the next time I used it. I was able to listen to music uninterrupted for about a half hour and then it gave me a low battery warning and shut itself down. (It had been fully charged so it should have worked for MUCH longer than a half hour.) I turned it back on and it went through its whole restart routine and it let me listen to music. I assumed it was a glitch.
However, lately, it has become more frequent and has gotten to the point where I can only get about 20 minutes of battery life out of it. I get the same warning, usually immediately after I select a song to listen to, and the iPod shuts down. Sometimes it will let me listen a bit more, and more often than not, it will not restart again. When I plug it in with the AC adapter to charge, it usually takes an hour or less to be "charged." However, I still only get about 20 minutes from it, if I'm lucky.
This evening I restored it to factory settings and have yet to find out if it has done any good. (It's amazing how quickly nearly 20 GB of music can be erased from your iPod!)
One more odd thing: I've left it plugged in via USB for most of the night as I've been putting music back onto it, and the battery icon in the corner leads me to believe it's charging. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it could be promising.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? And if so, were you able to fix it, and how?
The thought of being without my iPod for the battery to be replaced makes me sick...

  • Another odd battery behavior

a few nights a week when I've finished using the mac, I'll close the screen and assume it has gone to sleep. The next day I will open the macbook and it will not power on. I'll plug in adaptor and see a dim version of my desktop with the battery icon saying the %left from the night before 65% for example. but at the bottom there will be a row of bars implying it is taking energy from adaptor until the screen will kick in again and the battery will show it has been discharged. Do I have to formally put the computer in sleep or is this a defect with the macbook/and or battery I purchsed it in late august and it started happening about a month into ownernship. thanks for any suggestions about what I should do. I did some of the fixes for improved battery use I saw here.

  • Odd battery behavior

I took my MacBook Pro last night and flattened it. I put Leopard on it, then installed Vista on it as well. Battery fully charged. I hibernated the machine and went to sleep. This morning, got up, and launched the machine. Battery at 93% (which is about right as I used it a little last night). Within 20 mins, I got the exclamation point and told to get this baby plugged in or I was going to lose data.
How does the battery drop that fast?? Is there some weird driver issue I'm not aware of?

    Hi Roger,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Try discharging the battery completely. Then reset the PMU and see whether it charges up properly.
    Cheers!

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

Hi all, new to the forums here.
I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

  • Strange battery symptoms and genius bar questions

    Hi,
I have a white macbook that I bought used with a used battery. When the battery started showing strange symptoms I replaced it with a new one. The new battery functioned perfectly for one cycle, then the same symptoms started again. Basically the computer isn't always recognizing the battery, with an X showing in the icon. Also with the charger connected the battery will sometimes charge, sometimes not. The activity shown in the icon doesn't always match what the stats listed in "about this mac".
So my questions: Is it likely that the brand new battery could be flawed and producing the same symptoms the old one did? I bought the computer reconditioned through a third party with an extended warrantee that won't cover the battery. How do I determine if the battery is the problem, or if it's the computer itself and I should send it back to the seller?
I've read some about the "genius bar" and I'm hoping for some info on that also. Is it necessary to make a reservation, or will they take walk ins? Will they give me any grief because it's a used computer not bought from them? What do they charge? Can I expect a complete diagnosis from them?
thank-you for any info anyone can offer!
I should add that I've reset the PRAM and NVRAm with no results. resetting the SMC (did I get that right?) worked only until the next time I started the computer. The Battery updater seems to be updated.
    Thanks

Yes, it's possible to get a defective new battery. It's also possible the AC adaptor is defective, and it's possible there's a problem with the motherboard.

You can also run hardware diagnostics:

Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • Random freezing and odd keyboard behaviors on 10.5.8

My random freezing started on 10.5.6. Updated to 10.5.7 and the problem persist. I have decided to upgrade to 10.5.8. Everything seemed fine for a day and a half. Then all of a sudden random freezing when starting, login, wake from sleep, etc.. and now odd keyboard behaviors. function keys randomly work when computer is not frozen.
I have tried every option listed in the discussions here and elsewhere. Does anyone have the same problems?

    I have tried so far:
disk permissions repaired from dvd and startup,
disk first aid, cleaned caches, virus checked, zapped the pram, reset power management, ran apple hardware check, ran disk warrior, trashed network prefs, deleted sleep image, replaced directory with techtool pro, tried new user account, re-updated, removed 3rd party software, and nothing works?????

  • Nexus 1000V and strange ping behavior

    Hi ,
I am using a Nexus 1000v a FI 6248 with a Nexus 5K in redundant architecture and I have a strange bevahior with VMs.
I am using  port-profiles without any problems but in one case I have this issue
I have 2 VMs assigned to the same port profile
When the 2 Vms are on the same esx I can ping (from a VM)  the gateway and the other VM, now when I move one of the VM to an other ESX (same chassis or not).
From both , I can ping the gateway, a remote IP but VMs are unreachable between them.
and a remote PC are able to ping both Vms.
I checked the mac table, from N5k it's Ok , from FI 6348 it's Ok , but from N1K I am unable to see the mac address of both VMs.
Why I tried ( I performed at each step a clear mac table)
Assign to an other vmnic , it works.
On UCS I moved it to an other vmnic , it works
On UCS I Changed the QOS policy , it works.
I reassigned it , and I had the old behavior
I checked all trunk links it's ok
So i didn't understand why I have this strange behavior and how I can troubleshoot it deeper?
I would like if possible to avoid to do that but the next step will be to create a new vmnic card and assign the same policy and after to suppress the vnmic and to recreate the old one.
    Regards

From what you mentioned here's my thoughts.
When the two VMs are on the same host, they can reach each other.  This is because they're locally switching in the VEM so this doesn't tell us much other than the VEM is working as expected.
When you move one of the VMs to a different UCS ESX host, the path changes.    Let's assume you've moved one VM to a different host, within the UCS system.
    UCS-Blade1(Host-A) - VM1
    UCS-Blade2(Host-B) - VM2
There are two paths option from VM1 -> VM2
    VM1 -> Blade1 Uplink -> Fabric Interconnect A -> Blade 2 Uplink -> VM2
    or
    VM1-> Blade1 Uplink -> Fabric Interconnect A -> Upstream Switch -> Fabric Interconnect B -> Blade 2 Uplink -> VM2
For the two options I've seen many instances were the FIRST option works fine, but the second doesn't.  Why?  Well as you can see option 1 has a path from Host A to FI-A and back down to Host B.  In this path there's no northbound switching outside of UCS.  This would require both VMs to be be pinned to the Hosts Uplink going to the same Fabric Interconnect.
In the second option if the path involves going from Host-A up to FI-A, then northbound to the upstream switch, then back down eventually to FI-B  and then Host-B. When this path is taken, if the two VMs can't reach each other then you have some problem with your upstream switches.  If both VMs reside in the same subnet, it's a Layer2 problem.  If they're in different subnets, then it's a Layer 2 or 3 problem somewhere north of UCS.
So knowing this - why did manual pinning on the N1K fix your problem?  What pinning does is forces a VM to a particular uplink.  What likely happened in your case is you pinned both VMs to Host Uplinks that both go to the same UCS Fabric Interconnect (avoiding having to be switched northbound).  Your original problem still exists, so you're not clear out of the woods yet.
Ask yourself is - Why are just these two VMs affected.   Are they possibly the only VMs using a particular VLAN or subnet?
An easy test to verify the pinning to to use the command below.  "x" is the module # for the host the VMs are running on.
module vem x execute vemcmd show port-old
I explain the command further in another post here -> https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3717261#3717261.  In your case you'll be looking for the VM1 and VM2 LTL's and finding out which SubGroup ID they use, then which SG_ID belongs to whch VMNIC.
I bet your find the manual pinning "that works" takes the path from each host to the same FI. If this is the case, look northbound for your L2 problem.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • Strange RMI behavior and data

    Hello:
I have a very difficult and strange problem. I am hoping somebody can spot what is going on or maybe tell me I am way off.
I have a client-server application that uses RMI for network communication. The server is a database and the clients insert, update and delete data from it. When a client starts up, it does Naming.lookup, and upon a success, will register some callback methods so that it gets notified of any changes to the database.
Everything works, but the performance is somewhat sketchy. For example, I have one test where one client sends over 1,000 new items to the database. After about 10 seconds of great performance it suddenly stops, almost like it lost its connection. Then, after about 10-30 seconds later, it starts right back up and runs for another 10 seconds. I am not getting any exceptions thrown.
At first I thought this was a network configuration issue, but I am able to resolve names and IP address backwards and forwards across all the clients and the server.
I installed ethereal, a network sniffer, to try to find out what was going wrong. I noticed a strange pattern, between my clients and server. Every 10 seconds there is strange exchange between each client and the server that last about .1 of a second.
The client always sends the same 41 bytes of data and the server sends the same 23 bytes back, except for the second-to-last byte. That one is always incremented.
The exchange is continuously happening even when none of the clients are doing anything, which leads me to believe that it is just a normal part of RMI and isnt doing anything. However, I have also noticed that my slowdowns ALWAYS occur when this happens. Below is a snippet of the data exchange between one of my clients and the server.
Has anybody ever seen this, or does anybody here have an idea of what is going wrong?

Thanks for everybodys help so far.
I have done some more testing and I found some usefull information in the transport.tcp log on the server side.
First, some background: I am now running with a single client attached to the database. My client is at 192.168.0.63 and my server at 192.168.0.21.
When my program starts up, my client opens up an RMI connection with the database to get the current data and to send database changes one. The client port is 3110 and the server port is 58252.
After I make the first change, the server makes a RMI connection back to my client to sends it datbase update. The server port is 58547 and the client is 3087.
I am sending the same two updates to the database every 5 seconds or so. After about 30 - 60, the database takes 12 seconds to contact the client where it normally take 0.005 seconds.
Just after the previous successfull update I saw this message
    06:33 sun.rmi.transport.TCPChannel$Reaper run
    FINER: RMI ConnectionExpiration-[192.168.0.63:3087]: wake up
Then at 6:36 I attemped to re-save another database object, I got my message that the server was about to attempt to fire off another update to the clients. Immediatly after that I got this log message
    06:36 run.rmi.transport.tcp.TCPChannel new connection
FINE: Thread 3 - reuse connection
6 seconds afterwards I get this
    6:44 sun.rmi.transport..tcp.TCPConnectionHandler run
FINE: RMI TCP Connection(3)-192.168.0.63 accepted from 192.168.0.63:3201
    6: 44 sun.rmi.transport..tcp.TCPConnectionHandler run
FINE: RMI TCP Connection(3)-192.168.0.63(58252) suggesting 192.168.0.63:3201
    6: 44 sun.rmi.transport..tcp.TCPConnectionHandler run
FINE: RMI TCP Connection(3)-192.168.0.63(58252) using 192.168.0.63:3087
The update to the client finishes at 6:48
In the packet sniffer I saw the same 12 second delay between the ACK and the PSH,ACK packets. In that delay, I saw that an RMI connection was initiated between the client on port 3201 and the server on port 585252. I am assuming that that connection is what was showing up at 6:44.
I guess that the connection between the database and the listener on the client is expiring for some reason. What I don't understand is why and who terminated the connection, the client or the server?
I was able to remove the program that was hiding my transport.tcp log messages, but I didn't see any of the connection re-establishment on the client side. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough

  • Odd usage behavior

iPhone v101: this odd usage behavior just started half a week ago. This is the second time it happened. During standby, the usage time continues to count forward. I leave my phone on my desk not using it, but the usage still goes up. For example, the usage was 1 hour and 20 minutes when I checked like three hours ago, now it says 4 hours and some minutes. WiFi off, not running any apps, great signal and I cannot find anything running. This behavior also appear to drain the battery a little bit. The phone was not being charged or on plugged in anywhere; just sitting still on my desk. Now, the usage is back to normal and not accumulating time when I am not using it. This is strange. Have anyone else seem this happening? I had the phone for over a month now...

I didn't notice it causing any battery drain, but it sounds like I am charging it differently than you are. Here's how mine worked:
I would plug the iPhone into the wall charger at night to charge while I slept. In the morning, it would show a full charge by showing a plug on the small battery icon, but the large green battery would still have a sliver that wasn't green. The usage and standby stats would show something in the 3-4 hour range, presumably the time since it hit full charge.
I would disconnect the phone, check my email, and then take it to my desktop computer and plug it in to sync and update all my podcasts, etc. I would leave it plugged into my desktop while I showered while I got ready for work. By the time I was ready to leave, it would again show a full charge on the small icon, but now my stats would be reset to 0 and would function normally throughout the day. But nothing I did ever stopped the stats from running up during the night after attaining full charge.
1.0.1 got rid of the stats problem (they always stay at 0/0 in the morning with a full charge until I unplug the phone) AND the weird behavior of the large green battery indicator went away. Now both indicators show full charge in the morning.

  • 30EA2/30EA1 : Selection Behavior on Master-Detail Result Grid

    Hi,
Tested on both Win XP and Win 7, SQL Dev with the included jre.
I notice quite annoying behavior on Master-Detail Result Grid.
This happen on either Report with master-detail layout (i.e Active Session from the built-in report), popup describe on several tabs, and objet viewer especially on Table's Partition tab.
    Here are the things :
    1. Why made the selection on header result cell lose its focus after selecting one?
I understand, that SQL Dev needs to re-query for displaying the detail.
But why not made the selection focus, goes back to the selected (shown by the rectangular yellow line around the cell) header cell ?
    2. Point 1 leads to another problem.
In order to copy the cell value, we have to click once again to select the cell value (shown by the rectangular yellow line around the cell) from the master grid and press CTRL + C.
What a waste extra effort here.
Moreover, I noticed some strange thing on object viewer Table - Partition tab.
It is really hard to copy the cell value from this tab, i.e copying the partition name value.
Everytime I press CTRL + C to copy its content, suddenly the cell goes to edit mode, which is read-only of course. CTRL + V to paste seems does not work, like it has nothing in the clipboard to be copied.
And, navigating the cursor from this point would cause the pointer goes to the last character of the cell content, as well as selecting the content using CTRL + Home, is useless.
Is it because there is no detail record on the detail (in this case Subpartition) tab?
However Partition tab on Popup Describe, which supposed to have the same behavior, CTRL + C works just fine.
    Is this an expected behavior?

When changing selection in Master grid, the Child grid is repopulated. This also cause the Master grid to lose focus which makes navigating & copying from master requiring to select a cell in it again.
    Right ?
    Yes. That's right.
I see, you use Child as referred to me as Detail, on which I get the name from Reports (when create User Defined Reports on SQL Dev, there shows Master on the top panel and below is Detail. :-)
If yes, this is the same issue as reported in other thread where executing Statement Runner in worksheet, the worksheet loses the focus & the results grid gets the focus.
The grid has got focus hungry & I am fixing it.Maybe this explains, why there is a small delay before showing the result grid.
I tried to compare from SQL Dev 2.1.1 and 3.0EA1.
3.0EA1 gets a little late (a second maybe) when displaying the result.
For the last item, here are the things :
    1. From the Schema Browser (Left Hand Side), expand Tables.
    2. Select a partitioned table from the tree, there shown Object Viewer (on Right Hand Side) for that Table. -- I use the term Object Viewer as shown on the Preferences : Automatically Freeze Object Viewer Windows
    3. Select Partitions tab
    4. Click a cell on Master grid, there you go the losen focus
    5. Now, click once again to select
    6. Press Ctrl + C
    7. It suddenly change to cell's edit mode (of course its read-only cell)
Navigating the cursor from this point would cause the pointer goes to the last character of the cell content, as well as selecting the content using CTRL + Home, is useless
    8. Now, go to the worksheet, and press Ctrl + V, nothing happens as if the copied cell doesn't get into the clipboard.

  • Strange Google Results

I am getting something odd happening with a redirect page.
I have a page that is used purely to track visitors from a
    site where we
have an advert. The advert links to this page that then
    redirects to the
    shop. The page is
    http://www.aclighting.com/amdram
    and has this code:
    <%@LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" CODEPAGE="1252"%>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0

There is some tracking code which monitors the traffic for
    this page. I
have been keeping an eye on this, and whilst we have not had
    much
traffic, it would seem that Google has picked up this file
    and is
    displaying results for it.
For some reason when searching for "lighting shop" this page
    gets listed
in seventh position with the title and first paragraph from
    the page it
    is redirected to.
Anyone have any ideas how to stop this? Its not that the
    traffic isn't
getting to us, its just that they are getting to us via a
    strange route.
    Why doesn't www.aclighting.com/shop have a higher ranking?
    Its the page
    with the meta information.
    Cheers,
    Steve

Maybe you should read something about these meta refreshes:

  • GS60 Pro - Erratic battery behavior

My GS60 Ghost Pro has a strange battery behavior since I got it earlier this week.
As an example, I did a powercfg -batteryreport and got something like this:
    16:23:34   Active    AC    98 %    53,291 mWh
    16:32:36   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    16:34:44   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:05:58   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:06:04   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:11   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:09:17   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:27   Active    Battery    98 %    53,280 mWh
    17:18:33   Active    AC    98 %    53,280 mWh
As you can see, it switches between AC and Battery by itself while being plugged in. It happens randomly. Other times charge goes to -1 mWh:
    20:52:40   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:19:44   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:19:47   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
    21:34:49   Active    Battery    -   -1 mWh
    21:34:52   Active    AC    100 %    53,860 mWh
I have also managed to get a "Battery not detected" message while the laptop was not even plugged. Powercfg reported:
     Installed batteries
Information about each currently installed battery
    No batteries are currently installed
Again, the laptop was running from the battery when getting this message.
I have tried to do an EC reset and to run the MSI battery calibration tool, but this has not fixed the issue.
Is there anything else I can try? Or is the battery defective and I should contact MSI already?

No, it`s really simple, hold your finger on an icon for a few seconds before they start to wriggle, and hit Delete, or "X" i`m not sure.
