Odd Battery

This is my third iPod, and I am experiencing a strange phenomenon that I have not seen in my previous models. My iPod is fully charged, and I turn the iPod off. I then place the iPod on Hold. In the morning after I remove the hold button, the iPod will not respond. I have to place the iPod in a charger and it resets itself. After it is working, the battery icon appears fully charged and it will work all day. In order to correct this, I have resetted the iPod. The iPod is running the latest version of software, but once in a while I will run into this problem. Has anyone else experienced this? My previous iPods would hold the charge and start up in the morning without any problems.

Heather,
Given the comprehensive actions you've already taken on this and the fact that the battery is less than a year old I suggest you take this up with the battery manufacturer. I realise that it's not causing you a real issue but best to investigate now with the 1yr (?) warranty available before it runs out.

  • Odd battery/charge behavior

Something odd happened today with my MBP (2011)...  I'm working away with it while it's plugged into power and all of a sudden it starts charging... but I never unplugged it or lost power or anything (and it's on a mondo UPS anyway).
It's been showing 98% instead of 100%, but showing "fully charged" with a green light and from reading the articles from Apple this is totally normal.  I did manage to get it to show 100% after a SMC reset, but after a subsequent reboot it went back to 98%.  Anyway, it actually looks like it's going to charge to 100% now (99% and still showing orange light).
Has anyone seen this behavior?  Normal?  Something to consider going to Apple store about?
    Thanks.

I understand the system will charge when it needs to, but in all my days with MacBook's and the like I've never seen one up and start charging AFTER being plugged in for several days and without any provocation (i.e. unplugging it for a few minutes).
My battery info all looks really good and the condition says "normal" so as long as "normal" is the same as "good" then it's probably fine.  Still odd, but fine.

  • 4G 20GB iPod - odd battery behavior

    Hi everyone,
After spending the better part of this evening/night looking at these discussion forums, I haven't seen any posts that are quite the same as the problem I'm experiencing.
I've had my iPod for just over a year, and we all know what that means, but I'm convinced it's not a major thing and something I can probably fix myself.
Enough suspense. About a month ago, I downloaded the iPod updater (I believe the 9/22/05 version) and installed it, and things seemed fine until the next time I used it. I was able to listen to music uninterrupted for about a half hour and then it gave me a low battery warning and shut itself down. (It had been fully charged so it should have worked for MUCH longer than a half hour.) I turned it back on and it went through its whole restart routine and it let me listen to music. I assumed it was a glitch.
However, lately, it has become more frequent and has gotten to the point where I can only get about 20 minutes of battery life out of it. I get the same warning, usually immediately after I select a song to listen to, and the iPod shuts down. Sometimes it will let me listen a bit more, and more often than not, it will not restart again. When I plug it in with the AC adapter to charge, it usually takes an hour or less to be "charged." However, I still only get about 20 minutes from it, if I'm lucky.
This evening I restored it to factory settings and have yet to find out if it has done any good. (It's amazing how quickly nearly 20 GB of music can be erased from your iPod!)
One more odd thing: I've left it plugged in via USB for most of the night as I've been putting music back onto it, and the battery icon in the corner leads me to believe it's charging. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it could be promising.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? And if so, were you able to fix it, and how?
The thought of being without my iPod for the battery to be replaced makes me sick...

Looks as if you may need to calibrate the battery meter. See these battery links for more info, and to understand if you may have a legitimate battery problem. The first two articles are quite informative:

  • Odd battery life issues after improvement w/ 5.1

I have an iPhone 4 GSM (AT&T) that was experiencing significant battery life issues with the previous version of iOS (5.0.1?).
After updating to iOS 5.1, the battery life improved signifcantly - I could now get comfortably through a day with 50% remaining at bedtime versus 20%.
In the last couple weeks the battery life started getting worse and worse, to the point where I could barely get home from work and it would be 10-20%. I started to pare back the settings like Location Services, notifications, frequency of email checking, etc. with no improvement. I noticed the phone seemed to be running warmer than usual, so I thought there may be some software issue causing an infinite loop...
I Reset Network Settings as I've heard that can help - no difference. Then I wiped the iPhone and restored from backup - no difference. Finally I wiped the iPhone and set up as New, only installing a few apps and being very conservative with push, GPS settings etc. I am still down to 20% by 5 pm, and this is with light use. Wifi is on all the time, which is what I primarily use, but it never caused this much drain.
It's also quite variable - the other day I made it home with about 70% battery life, but then it dropped 25% in 30 minutes with only light usage (email/web).
Is the battery itself going bad, and/or is there any way I can test it? I got this phone as a warranty replacement (probably a refurb) in July  2011 so I don't think the battery is that old.

Just an update. I totally wiped my iPhone 4, and turned everything off including keeping it in Airplane Mode and it seemed to help a little - it was over 80% at noon without any use. Of course, the phone is useless like this. As soon as I turned wifi on at work (still left the cellular radio off) it started dropping fast.
It must be the battery going bad, but I was just wondering if there are any other suggestions. I don't want to pay to get a new battery installed if I don't have to, since by this fall I will be eligible to upgrade to iPhone 5 if it comes out.

  • Odd battery behaviour

Yesterday, my MacBook Pro (purchased 3 months ago) drained the battery rather quickly. The battery status said Service Battery. Coconut battery told me the health of my battery was only 27%. I decided to calibrate the battery and see what that would do. I fully charged the battery, then unplugged the power adapter. All of a sudden coconut battery told me my health was 97% again. But then within the hour the battery drained again and reached the red light again. I thought it would give me the warning message you usually get about saving your stuff etc.., but then all of a sudden the battery icon in the menu bar filled itself again to about 80% and the status says "normal".
However...the battery icon is still red. See picture:
Should I bring in my MacBook and get it checked out? Or should I still drain the battery completely? Or...?

yeah...just minutes after this post the macbook shut down completely just like that so will bring it in and get it checked.

  • Odd battery behavior and strange recalibration results

I have a 14" iBook G4, just over a year and a half old, and have been having problems lately with my battery. I think I am at the point where I just need to buy a new one, but I wanted to know if anyone had any extra advice or had the same problems as me. Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1584
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1584
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 16405
    Cycle Count: 229
I know my cycle count is high, which has something to do with it, but lately my full charge capacity has been dropping dramatically. I did a textbook Apple battery recalibration last night following all instructions, and my full charge capacity DROPPED from 1840 to the above stated 1584. Is this normal? My cycle count is high, but it isn't as high as what would be reflected in my charge capacity, correct? Can anyone help me out or have any ideas? Is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a new battery?
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 14"

That's possible, I suppose but more likely:
Overcharing lithium batteries is really bad. So bad that well designed devices turn off charging when the capacity is reached. At this point, I believe one of two things can happen. The device might be powered by the charger, however with the battery no longer receiving any charge, or (easier) the device can run on the battery after the charger has been disabled. The plug icon in the battery icon indicates charger not charging but connected. I think the iPhone is smart enough to run off the charger while not charging, however batteries can lose charge over time even when they are not being used.
The computer takes longer to charge the battery so it spends less time connected but not being charged than when you use the wall plug. I've seen this on a Palm PDA as well, although a little more dramatic. I believe the Palm was not smart enough to run off the charger and instead ran of the battery. Depending on when you disconnected, it could be truly fully charged or a few % low.

  • Very odd battery issue

I am having an issue with my phone where it tells me my battery is dead when it's really not
I could have say 40%~50% of battery life, take my phone out of my pocket, press the home button...  Nothing, then go to hold down the power button and get the dead battery screen (the screen that shows the battery and blinking red line with the USB plug below it), issue is, the battery isn't really dead, when I plug it in, it springs to life right away, displaying it's actual battery percentage, and it works fine if I unplug it right after it boots, proving the battery isn't dead
Sometimes when I try booting it again, I can get it running again without plugging it in, this doesn't always happen though
Any reason why I would be getting the dead battery screen when my battery isn't dead?
I am updated to the latest iOS, so I know that is not the issue
I have an iPhone 5 if that matters

Try restoring the iOS, as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
I would recommend you NOT restore from backup when finished, rather just sync your content back to the phone.

  • Macboook shutting off at odd battery percentages.

Ive had my macbook for about a year, core duo, and within the last two months it has begun shutting off when the battery is not near being low, the two times i could tell what the percentages were when it shut off were last week 15% and tonight 27%, i dont know if it has been getting progressively worse or if it is getting all mixed up percentage wise, but it has become a real problem. The computer is not plugged in when this happens and i have already reset the PMU as i was told before, this did nothing. any suggestions are helpful, thank you.

Have you done the battery update? Apple: About Battery Update 1.2.
How many cycles are on your battery? Apple: Determining Battery Cycle Count
If it is under 300 and you still have a problem after doing the update call Apple at the number listed in the update link and see about getting your battery replaced. You can also go by a store if you live near one and get help there.

  • Another odd battery behavior

a few nights a week when I've finished using the mac, I'll close the screen and assume it has gone to sleep. The next day I will open the macbook and it will not power on. I'll plug in adaptor and see a dim version of my desktop with the battery icon saying the %left from the night before 65% for example. but at the bottom there will be a row of bars implying it is taking energy from adaptor until the screen will kick in again and the battery will show it has been discharged. Do I have to formally put the computer in sleep or is this a defect with the macbook/and or battery I purchsed it in late august and it started happening about a month into ownernship. thanks for any suggestions about what I should do. I did some of the fixes for improved battery use I saw here.

  • Odd Battery indications

    Hi
My Macbook is about 2 1/2 years old and I think the battery has gone.
On power it is stuck on 'Finishing charge' then when I take the power off last time I kept getting the "Battery low" warning, but it kept going for 30 minutes before dying. It then took about 10 minutes to get to the 'finishing charge' bit.
Does this mean the battery's dead?

    Hi
    This is what it says:
    System Power Settings:
    AC Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
Automatic Restart On Power Loss: No
    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Wake On LAN: Yes
    Display Sleep Uses Dim: Yes
    Battery Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 2
    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Display Sleep Uses Dim: Yes
    Reduce Brightness: Yes
I left the charger on overnight and through the day so got a grren light. I've been on the computer now for 3 hours off the charger and it still says 100% and the little battery icon is full. The time remaining says 10:00. I can't believe that!

  • Odd battery behavior

I took my MacBook Pro last night and flattened it. I put Leopard on it, then installed Vista on it as well. Battery fully charged. I hibernated the machine and went to sleep. This morning, got up, and launched the machine. Battery at 93% (which is about right as I used it a little last night). Within 20 mins, I got the exclamation point and told to get this baby plugged in or I was going to lose data.
How does the battery drop that fast?? Is there some weird driver issue I'm not aware of?

    Hi Roger,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Try discharging the battery completely. Then reset the PMU and see whether it charges up properly.
    Cheers!

  • 3GS Battery indicator issue

    Hello,
I have been encountering a wierd issue with the battery indicator on my 3GS. I charged my phone from a completely depleted battery last week, but after I had left it to charge over night the battery percentage displayed 98% but the battery bar itself showed a completed charge (wall plug over the bar). I usually do a complete drain every other week. I figured oh it must just be a glitch so I pulled the charger out and started my day.
Last night however, I charged my phone from about 30% to what should have been full charge (about 7 hours). But this morning the phone read 100% charge on the percentage indicator and battery bar; as soon as I removed it from the charger it immediatly dropped to 98%.
My settings that drain the battery are below
    Wifi-off
    Bluetooth-off
    3g-On
    Auto-Brightness
Have any of you had similar experiences?
    Thanks in advance

i did see odd battery indicator issues before i did a restore and setup as new phone... but... i have also read that it might indicate a battery issue on your device as well...
if you have not and don't mind loosing sms logs, call logs, and app data you can try a restore and setup as new phone (remember to backup your contacts, calendar and move out any photos/videos you have stored)
if it still jumps around with a restore as new phone then it is most likely a hardware issue (battery issue connection issue etc)
you can just make an apointment with the apple store... they do have a diagnostic tool to see actual battery performance (it might let them see if its a software glitch or hardware) worst case they can restore it and setup as new phone for ya (remember to make sure your contacts, calendar and pics are synced before your trip to the store if you do go)

  • ATV Does Not Respond

Okay, so I hope I am not the only person experiencing this....
Ever since updating my ATV and iTunes my ATV will automatically disconnect from my Remote. I can press buttons and try to unpair/pair the remote but the amber light is completely unresponsive... I have tried to do a Restart and Diagnostics but nothing. However, the remote will re-gain responsiveness when I do a complete Factory Restore but the problem inevitably comes back.
I did have the Remote app. for my iPhone but even that became unresponsive stating that my iTunes Library "could not be found." After this second restore, I decided to remove the app to see if maybe that could be affecting it? Anyone have any ideas and/or solutions?

    Sounds odd, battery ok?
I think you'd get a low battery warning though as one of my remotes has started giving me an error on screen lately (though it may be the remote my daughter chucked in the sinkful of washing up the other day!).

  • IPod classic 160gb - pressure on screen ffwds songs, stops them

After a few hours in my back pocket while I'm out gardening or chopping wood, my ipod 160gb classic will fast forward or stop songs when I lift it out of my pocket.  My thumb is on the screen, fingers on the back.  I figure it is some kind of long-ish use problem as it only takes a few minutes out of my pocket for it to revert to normal.  I am contemplating opening it up but I don't know what I'm looking for! I've only ever changed the odd battery on ipods before.  Any help or suggestions?

I have read it and there is very little information to go off of and I don't know how opening up the iPod up is going to correct something that can usually be solved by activating the hold switch.
If you didn't want such a response from either of us, maybe you should have provided that you knew of a such a function.  Again very little information.
You probably shouldn't coming here looking for help and then tell others who are only generously donating their time to helping you that they are wrong and act as though you already have an answer to your problem.
Seriously, we are only trying to help by offering suggestions based on what little information you gave us. We do want to help, but your attitude might prevent anybody else from trying to help.
Sorry that you seem to have such a bad experience on here already...

  • Finishing Charge

    Hi All
I have a MBP 2.4GHz that I bought last June.
I am having odd battery problems.
The machine has started shutting down with no low battery warning like it used to.
Also, now it will not fully charge. It will get to displaying Finishing Charge and there it stays for hours with the orange light on the power chord.
I have reset the PRAM and also held the power button down on the Mac without the battery or power chord on for 15 seconds while off.
    Any ideas? Is this common?
    David

a full cycle is after you have drained 100% out of the batter weather it is 100 at one time or 5 20% drains and charges, mix and match. keep the machine plugged in as often as you can, follow the battery conditioning (drain all the way once a month). etc etc.
ive had my machine for about a year, have it off power almost every day for classes but the fact i dont drain it to far before i can charge keeps the cycles low.
