Odd Blank Folder Names

I have a new MBP 2.4 and have discovered something very odd. Something is writing blank folders with very odd names to my preferences folder. The names contain dingbat symbols and other odd 'Greek' symbols. I have trashed the folders a couple of times but from time to time they come back. They are written at various times and I can't find anything in any log to coincide with the times these folders are written. Does anyone have a clue?
Victor

I have the same "problem" i dont't know if it's doing any harm, but if anyone has a clue, i would like to know. Thanks.

  • Mail 2.0: Odd POP folder name

In Mail.app, I have two POP accounts, one named "RoadRunner." In ~/Library/Mail, I have the two expected root account folders, but the RoadRunner one seems oddly named, lacking the expected "POP-" prefix.
IOW, instead of b]POP-<user_name>@pop-server.tx.rr.com the folder is named simply <user_name>@pop-server.tx.rr.com.
I have set up other tx.rr.com accounts on other Macs, using the same server info & account description used on mine, & in each case they are of the form POP-<user_name>@pop-server.tx.rr.com.
AFAIK, the account works perfectly well, but I'm puzzled why the folder lacks the "POP-" prefix, & if it could cause any problems. Any thoughts?

First of all, is this really Mail 2.0, as the title of your post suggests?
The “POP-” prefix should definitely be there if the account was set up in (I believe) Mail 1.3 or later. I’m not sure, but I believe early versions of Mail arranged account folders differently, specifically there was a folder for each account type (named after the account type), and the account folders themselves didn’t have the prefix.
I’ve seen some users reporting the prefix as being “POP/” (note the ‘/’ instead of ‘-’) for accounts that had been originally set up in early versions of Mail, and I believe that happened as a result of upgrading from a version of Mail that used the old convention to a version of Mail that used the new one.
That said, I have no idea why the “POP-” prefix would be missing in your case. It could be a problem if you ever want to re-create com.apple.mail.plist, for example, because Mail won’t be able to locate those mailboxes anymore after setting up the account again.
If it was me, I’d move the mail stored there to other mailboxes, delete the account, and set it up again. Alternatively, make a backup, delete the account, and import the mailboxes from the backup, or something like that.

  • Long folder names and backing up on a Windows server

So Mail creates these really long folder names in the Home/Library/Mail folder. Something like [email protected] Not usually a problem. But I just found myself in a bit of a pickle. The trouble is, I'm trying to back up the email of the Mac users in the office onto a Windows 2003 server. There is this odd and very irritating limitation with Windows servers and Macs and the number of characters allowed in a filename and/or path name.
So this is all a big set up for the question on my mind: Is it at all possible to rename those long folder names to something more succinct? I mean I know it's possible but when you do so, when you open Mail.app back up, it creates a new folder with its standard naming convention.
I have confirmed that renaming the folder manually and backing up without opening Mail.app again works just fine.
    Thanks!

I apologize. I was unclear in my description of my new problem. I have some users using Mail.app and others using Entourage. I've encountered the "file too large" problem with Entourage users. For the record, I'm using the backup program iBackup. In the log file it creates, it states that the Entourage database file is too large.
For example, one person has a 2.6GB Entourage database file. iBackup will start copying and get to around 2GB, maybe 2.1 or 2.2. It will then appear to quickly finish. Looking in the backup folder on the server, it shows the entirety of the Office 2004 Identities folder to be 96KB....
Is this some sort of weird limitation on the part of Windows Server 2003 and how it deals with communication from Macs, or is it just an issue with iBackup? I have copied much larger files using iBackup to back up to a locally-attached Firewire hard drive successfully, so I am leaning towards a strange Windows Server issue.
    Thanks for any input!

  • Possible: renaming files - folder names as variables.

Here's a bit of background - I have a rather extensive MP3 collection (all legal - I work for an independent music magazine in my spare time) - it's approx 7,000 files big now.
I have them all stored in folders as follows:
c:\SAMag\MP3's\Albums (and here comes the tricky bit...)
    EITHER
\Artist Name Here - Album Title\<.MP3 files here> (No artist names contain a '-' so this is the seperator)
    OR
    \Artists Name Here\Albums Title One\<.MP3 files here>
    \Artists Name Here\Albums Title Two\<.MP3 files here>
\Artists Name Here\Albums Title Three\<.MP3 files here> (Where there are more than one albums to an artist)
Playing these files is a nightmare as they all have different naming conventions and odd ID tags. I want to remove all ID tags and rename them to have meaningful file names (so that WinAmp displays a decent, non-confusing, name).
    I would like:
    "<artist name> - <song title> (<album title> - <#>)"
So, basically - is it possible to rename files in Java. Specifically: using the folder names that they are contained in as variables to put in this name?
    Thanks for any help people!

    Thanks for that.
I'm pretty new to this whole Java thing (even though
I've been attempting to do it for a while!) so was
wondering if you could point me in the right
    direction.
That is exactly what I did though.
Do you have the javadocs? If so then you look up java.io.File and read the methods in it.

  • Finder automatically changing folder names...

Finder is automatically changing folder names... say I have two folders side by side titled:
    Financial
    Miscellaneous
Sometimes, and for no apparent reason, the "financial" folder will, when I click on it, change to "miscellaneous" and will show the exact same files no matter which one of the two I click on. I know for a fact that each folder holds two entirely different sets of documents...
What is going on here? How do I stop it from doing this?

We are experiencing this issue on both ppc and intel machines and it appears to be isolated to the Finder as the terminal reports properly. The commonality is network shares, it does not seem to matter if they are nfs automounted from solaris, smb mounted from a linux box, etc etc, nor does it matter if an admin user manually mounts these shares, the issue persists. I, like a previous poster on this subject was skeptical given the symptoms but kept an open mind and then witnessed this anomaly for myself. We can now re-create it at will. I have narrowed it down to the 10.4.9 update and it continues through 10.4.10, in my testing, the issue does not exist in 10.4.8. The Finder version changes from 10.4.6 in OSX version 10.4.8 to Finder version 10.4.7 in OSX version 10.4.9, the Finder versions do not coincide with OS versions. Swapping in the older Finder did not solve the issue so there are other culprits involved. It may not even be the Finder at issue, the issue may reside in the way OSX mounts shares and simply manifests in the Finder. Odd behavior to say the least, one good thing is that while the data appears to have gone away, it's actually safe and sound and a reboot/logout-login resolves the issue. Deleting .DS_Store, force re-launching the Finder does not seem to help nor does deleting caches, preferences, etc, the only solution I have found is to revert to 10.4.8.

  • Outlook Folder name contained invalid characters or is only spaces

Folder name contained invalid characters or is only spaces

    Hi,
It seems the issue is that you receive the message when you are using Outlook.
First please let me know, what type of account are you using in Outlook? Exchange, IMAP or POP3?
I suggest you logon the Webmail/OWA to check whether there are any special characters in the folder names. If there are, remove the special characters and check if Outlook still prompts this message.
This issue can also be caused by some anti-virus program or 3rd-party add-ins. Please disable the anti-virus program temporarily to check the result. I also suggest you start Outlook in Safe Mode to determine whether it's related to add-ins:
Press Win + R, type "outlook.exe /safe" in the blank box, press Enter.
If there's no problem in Outlook Safe Mode, go to FILE -> Options -> Add-Ins to disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which on caused this problem.
Since the information you provided is quite limited, you can also let me know what you have done recently to the PC or Outlook before this issue occurred.

Did you perform a Firefox Reset either by clicking the button on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page or via the Safe mode start window?
You may have gotten the Safe Mode start window as the result of not being able to start Firefox more than once after crashes.

"Reset" creates a new default profile with a time stamp appended to identify it and tries to recover settings like bookmarks and history and passwords and cookies and auto-fill data from the old profile, but you lose data like extensions and other customizations.
Firefox 15+ versions will move the old profile folder to an "Old Firefox Data-##" folder on the Desktop that gets a number appended if you use reset more than once, so you can no longer use the profile manager to revert to the old profile.

  • Changing "untitled event" no longer changes coinciding folder name

I guess this doesn't cause any sort of problem, but is a change I've noticed and just trying to figure out why. I just upgraded to the new iPhoto '09. I recently uploaded photos from my camera and then changed the folder name from "untitled event" to a custom name, as I've done many times in the past. Previously, if I then went to "show package contents" in the iPhoto library, the new name I had changed the event to would also show as the folder name within the iPhoto library. Suddenly that's not happening since the upgrade. My most recent folder was changed, but when I look at that same folder in the package contents, it still just shows the date and not the custom name. Has anyone else noticed this? Again, not a problem, or causing any issues. But I do find it odd that the event name now would no longer coincide with one another.

No one is - and no one is really happy about it - but since you really don't (at least shouldn't) go into the iPhoto library very often it also is not a giant deal

  • Split library, folder names and paths are in a mess. Need to get library all in one place on my storage drive and off my OS drive. In a fix!

Help appreciated on this one as I'm OK on my PC but far from a whizz. Done a little investigation and reading of https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5199195?start=0&tstart=0 but I just can't seem to get anywhere and end up with a very underpopulated iTunes.
To set the scene. Been using iTunes for many years and have had several PCs in this time and migrated the library over. Each time I have had a half hearted attempt at organising it all on 1 drive but it has obviously not gone to plan hence my split library and weird file/ folder paths. e.g.
for some reason my recently downloaded apps are stored in C:/users/mark/my music/itunes/mobile applications. I also have numerous itunes library files on this drive
my music is mainly stored on my storage drive B:/itunes music/music/music. On both drives I have mobile applications folders each with many apps in.
I have set my itunes media folder location to B:\iTunes Music\Music so have no idea why all my downloaded apps end up on the C:/, nor have I any idea why they appear in the library seing as the itunes media folder is set to B:/
I hope you can make heads or tails of this as I am even confusing myself as I type!
Help appreciated as every time I try and move stuff around I end up with a very depleted library and have to remember what I moved where to put it back!
    Mark

So I right clicked to find the files and relink, and it did not work. The folder name disappeared.
It didn't disappear, it moved (because you told Lightroom to move it). It moved from the incorrect folder location, to the new folder location. Please look in the new folder, in whatever location it is in, not in the old folder and the old location, and you will find the photos.

  • The operation can't be completed because the item "folder name" is in use

    Hi everyone,
I think this is quite a common issue but I don't find it really easy to find a solution.
I have a folder containing a folder and no files on a server that I cannot delete, for the life of me.
Whether I use shortcuts or drag the main folder to the bin, I have the same result "The operation can't be completed because the item "secondary folder name" is in use". This folder is just 1 year old so, obviously, I have restarted the computer more than once since then which means that the folder is NOT in use.
I'd like to clean up a bit and remove some stuff and this is bugging!
    Hope someone can help me.
    Thanks in advance!

If you don't have other backup data on it, reformatting external drive could solve the problem.

  • How to access a url in file receiver CC with space in the folder name?

    Hi
    PI 7.11 sp4:
In a file receiver channel I would like to send the message to this folder:
    de-prod.dk\bu\something\something\PTI eventstanden\archive\"
But I get this error message:
"Target directory 'F:\usr\sap\XP7\DVEBMGS02\j2ee\cluster\server0\"\de-prod.dk\bu\something\something\PTI eventstanden\archive"' does not exist"
My question is: where the f.... does it get the 'F:\usr\sap\XP7\DVEBMGS02\j2ee\cluster\server0\  from, and how can I fix it?
One issue is the space in the folder name. I have tried to replace the space with %20 and then remove the "" s around the whole url, but without any luck.
When I log on the server on which Pi is running I can access the folder using the mentioned url including the ""s.
All suggestions would be highly appreciated!

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!

  • How to change the folder name of saved pictures

A problem I was facing with iPhoto 11.
In the older version of iPhoto everytime I imported photoes from my camera it used to save it in the iPhoto Library under the same exact name as the Event Name. Meaning, if I chose the event name to be "2013 - My Birthday Party" and hit import for the pictures I wanted it to import, the same exact even name I could search for under the iPhoto Library. There under "Orginial" folder I could easily look for "2013 - My Birthday Party" a folder name same as the event name.
Now in teh new version of iPhoto (iPhoto 11) first I've noticed that the folder "Original" now became "Masters" which is fine by me (who cares what teh name is, as long as it stores the pictures and can backup this folder with Time Machine). However, the second thing I realized and this is my problem, is that iPhoto stores all my imported photoes under folder and subfolders which indicates the date I imported the pictures from my camera and not the name of the event.
This is quite annoying, as all my photoes since 2008 are categorized by the event name I gave them and not by the month/day/date etc. as it is now.
My question is whether there is a way to enforce iPhoto to keep the old methodology of storing its photo while keeping the event name under the "Masters" folder?
And please do NOT ask me why I need to go directly to the Finder folder... it doesn't resolve my issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    N

You need the latest version of iPhoto for that export option - and you can't run that on 10.6.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Exporting does not remove images from the Library, it simply make a new file.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
