Odd Bluetooth Quirk?

I've been having a few little software glitches in Snow Leopard lately, most notably that sometimes on login my desktop items don't show up. Now I'm having some bluetooth difficulties and I'm guessing its also a little software glitch.
I use my Macbook Pro as a desktop with a second monitor, wireless keyboard, magic mouse, etc. I hooked everything up just now, and my bluetooth will not connect to any device and will not turn off (it says "Bluetooth: On" in light gray and cannot be clicked. I tried restarting, same problem. Any help?
Other info: To my knowledge, bluetooth was turned off last time I put the computer to sleep, about 9 hours ago. When I tried to wake it, it wouldn't respond, so I restarted. Bluetooth was turned on when I re-started, but airport was turned off like it was when I put it to sleep. Odd? I would say so.
Help is much appreciated!

same problem with or without the monitor (A 23" aluminum cinema display, the version prior to the LED desplay).
And no, I have not. What would that entail?

  • Odd bluetooth behavior after ios 8 update

After the ios 8 update a call is no longer automatically transferred to my headset when I switch it on during an incoming call.
Before the update I could switch on my Jabra headset while my iphone 5C was ringing and that would automatically answer the call and direct the sound to the headset. That is how a bluetooth headset should work.
After the update the call is answered when I turn on the headset but the sound is not transferred to the headset. If I press the answer button on the headset the call is terminated. Makes absolutely no sense at all. Any ideas for a fix apart from waiting for 8.0.3??

I have he same problem when I have bluetooth activated and my IPhone is paired.  When the phone rings and I press 'Accept' I receive the message 'Call has Ended', however if I quickly press the Speaker Key and select my  Jabra blue tooth device, I  can capture the call.   Why isn't the Bluetooth device connecting to the call automatically when the blue tooth is paired and active?   Receiving the Message' Call has Ended' and having to quickly tap on the speaker button and press the Bluetooth device before the call goes the voicemail doesn't see right.  Thank you

  • Two startup quirks with new Mac Pro

Just upgraded from an aging Power Mac G5 to a Mac Pro (with new 24" Cinema Display replacing my old ADC Cinema Display).
So far so good overall. But two odd startup quirks have popped up.
First, with my old setup, when I restarted the Mac, the startup chimes would sound through my external speakers. Now, the sound (barely audible) comes from the Mac Pro itself. Not a big problem. But I'd rather hear the sound through the speakers. I am wondering if there is any way to get the Pro to do this.
Second, I have a second display (connected via the DVI port). When I turn on the Mac, the DVI display comes up first and shows the startup gray and blue screens. The Cinema Display (even though it is the monitor with the menubar) does not come on until the Desktop background appears. With my old Power Mac G5 setup, the Cinema Display came on immediately and showed the startup screens. Again, not a big deal. But I am wondering why the shift and if it can be shifted back.
As I write this, it occurs to me that these two matters may have essentially the same cause (e.g., components not coming on as soon as expected). Just a thought.

    Hi mfiman,
I can only answer your first question, since I don't have a two-display setup.
With the introduction of the very first Mac Pro in 2006 Apple seems to have changed the behaviour of the startup chime to only come from the internal speaker.
To my knowledge this can not be changed (have it too !).

  • Ordinal 19 in MAPI32.dll

I have tried reinstalling and also repairing the Reader X on my sister's machine running Windows XP Home SP3.  When trying to open any PDF file, we get an error message, "The ordinal 19 could not be located in the dynamik link library MAPI32.dll."  How can this be taken care of?  The machine is a Compaq Presario SR1517CL.

I've just encountered this same problem after updating to ReaderX.  I updated
everything possible on Microsoft without luck.  What worked -- I had saved my document just to the desktop. I right-clicked on my document's file icon and selected "open with" "Adobe Reader." It popped open a license agreement for using ReaderX, which I "accepted" and then my document opened up.  Miraculous!  Now my PDF files seem to working just fine again. An odd little quirk.  I hope this works for you too.

  • IPhone 5c muting specific sound effect in a video I made.

I have run in to an oddly specific quirk of my new iPhone. I made a video for county library to use promoting their summer reading program. I used short bits of static as a transitional device (think Robot Chicken). The static sound will simply not play on my iPhone. It doesn't matter if I am playing it from a local file on the phone, or streaming from youtube. The very same files will play fine on any given computer.
Anyone know what is going on and how I can correct it?

Oh, and just as icing on the cake, the sound effect is an Apple sound effect from the Soundtrack Pro effect library.

  • Mbp won't shutdown after disconnect...

    we have 3 macs (10.4.6 mpb, 10.3.9 G5, 9.2.2 g3 imac!), some printers, etc...
hooked up thru an ethernet hub (from a cable modem, into a router).
we keep files on the G5, and everyone connects to that & moves files around.
the macbook pro just replaced a tibook, running os9 (which did not have this problem).
whenever i go to shut it down (either after ejecting the G5 connection, or not),
it will not shut down; spins forever.
    any ideas, anyone??
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had a similar problem. New MBP, but I had migrated a profile from my previous 12" PowerBook G4 (via Apple's tool upon starting the new machine). Ended up with the same odd network quirks on the new machine that my old machine had, including missing the "Connect to Server..." from the Finder's "Go" Menu.
I used Onyx to clear out all the system/user caches and deleted the Finder's preference file (com.apple.finder.plist). Rebooted, and things seem to be back to normal.

  • Separate Palm desktop installs for Palm M505 and its apps and Palm Treo 680 and its apps on same Windows XP computer?

    Hello:
I'm trying to do a workaround. I've got a Palm M505 that has a terrific keyboard that hooks up to it. This lets me write documents in a very portable way. The Treo 680 never had the equivalent, really full-sized external keyboard made compatible with it. So, I want to create documents on the M505 but otherwise mostly use the Treo 680.
Here's the rub. When I tried to sync both devices to my Palm Desktop version 4.1.2 for Windows XP, it didn't work. Hotsync tries to synchronize apps that won't work on the M505. Also, the versions of Documents to Go are very different (5.x versus 8.x).
I would love to have a separate Palm Desktop installation for each device, so I can have a nice desktop environment for each by launching them separately. But, the Palm Desktop installation "wizard" shuts down and won't give me the opportunity to do a separate Desktop install.
Any ideas other than buying an ultra-small laptop and dropping this kludgy scheme? For instance, if I were to copy the installed files from one directory to another, would this work, or would it not be set up in the Registry?
    Thanks!

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Okay. Stubbornness pays off! I was able to beam documents between my Palm M505 and Treo 680, avoiding the need for complicated syncing of both Palms to my laptop machine. I was also able to beam documents from both Palms to my Dell Inspiron M300 laptop, running Windows XP Pro.
When beaming between Palm devices, the results were better. In the M505, Documents to Go version 5.004 doesn't translate documents into Microsoft Word format but into something it calls Word to Go. The Treo has DTG version 8.003, which is able to read files in Word to Go format and save in native Microsoft Word for Windows format.
However, even when beaming a Word to Go (old format) document directly onto the Desktop of my Windows XP machine, it gave me a document I could open, with the text I'd input following a bunch of characters Word obviously didn't understand. If I add the file from my desktop to the newer Documents to Go version on my laptop, I expect it will translate it into a Word file when it syncs to the Treo but haven't tested that. In either case, beaming between Palm devices is the easiest solution and completely solves the problem.
For any readers who are interested, the reason I've so stubbornly tried to solve this problem is that I'm a fast touch typist. My old Palm M505 plugs directly into a wonderful, old Palm Portable Keyboard that is full-sized. Because it's a hard-wired connection, I can type fast. That old keyboard compresses into the same folded footprint as some new foldover external keyboards. It does this even though much bigger by folding in an accordian-like fashion, with four flat surfaces folder together. That keyboard design now exists in some of the keyboards sold by IGo corporation (their old name for it was Sierra Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard). But, they were unable to figure out how to handshake their Bluetooth with the odd Bluetooth configuation in the Treo 680. Why Palm made the Bluetooth library different in the Treo 680 from other Treos is a mystery to me, but enough of this tangent. Some interested in this workaround may be curious for similar reasons.

  • App store mavericks broken

I have tried every trick I can find - restarting, resetting PRAM, deleting prefs - mothing. App store opens, and sits there with a blank background. Each section icon (Features, Updates, etc.) will 'light up' when clicked, but does nothing. In fact, they can all be lit up at once.
I can't do any updates, I can't do anything at all n AppStore. I even get occasional updates on one-day discounts and such via the AppStore, and I can't even take advantage of them! This is insanely frustrating!
Is there any other intel on this?

No good. That's one of the many things I have tried. It does the same thing - opens to the blank window, and then nothing, same as in my main account.
Just for clarity, here is what I have tried:
    Launching AppStore from another profile
Deleting prefs and caches for AppStore
    Restarting in SafeMode
    Repairing Permissions, and disk
    Performing all periodic maintenance scripts
    Resetting PRam & NVram
Some odd voodoo with deleting the ethernet profile, restarting, re-adding ethernet, restarting again (from another thread here???)
Logging out of iTunes store and resetting caches there, then restarting.
Turning auto-updates both off and on in System Prefs.
Standing on one foot and rubbing a cat on my head by the light of the full moon...
(Well, ok, I didn't *really* think that last one would work...) Seriously, though, I'm not new to taming odd Mac quirks, but this one is just not budging.
The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the OS via Restore because, really? I don't have a week to fix this via WiFi (reason No. 535 that I think the whole "no media OS install" is a poor idea.....) Although, i have seen plenty of folks that did the reinstall, and siad the issue came back within a couple days, so it seem that isn't any more of a fix than the rest of the voodoo....

  • Podcast exhibiting odd behaviour with bluetooth

Ever since updating to iOS6 / iPhone 5 i've been experiencing odd behaviour with music playback. Now that the Podcasts app is a requirement, i'm not sure if this is directly related to the Podcasts app or if it's an iOS 6 quirk.
My iPhone connects to my car's stereo head unit via bluetooth. When i start my car it automatically connects and music, phone calls, etc, are all forwarded to my car's speakers. When i would switch my car off, music would stop automatically and i'd get out of my car and go about my day.
Everything worked absolutely perfectly in iOS 5 with the 4S.
The issue now with iOS6/iP5 is that when i switch off my car and use Siri or make a phone call, after i stop using Siri or if i end my call, the Podcasts app automatically resumes playback of what ever i was listening to when i switched my car off... Essentially it blasts music at me through the internal iPhone speaker for absolutely no reason.
Here is a step by step,
    1. Start car
    2. Play music
    3. Turn off car
    4. Music automatically stops
    5. (while at the office, away from my car) Use siri or make a phone call
    6. When i end the call or stop using Siri, music automatically resumes via the iPhone internal speaker
Is there any way to fix this?? It's getting quite annoying to have my iPhone blast me with music in fairly inappropriate situations.

Disregard, there is a thread about it here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4346946?tstart=0
Can't see any way of deleting my thread unfortunately.

  • Odd lockup using Bluetooth to get to Web with a Treo 700p

Getting to the web with my Verizon Treo 700p is better with Leopard than it was with Tiger. (For instructions on how to do this see http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=215) However I do get odd behavior. If the connection is lost (not sure if it the blutetooth or the web connection) and I attempt to reconnect, sometimes the "Connecting" in the title bar starts to scroll left to right and freezes. The fan on the MacBook starts to crank up and the machine is minimally responsive. I could not quit any apps. Could not even force quit. Oddly, turning off bluetooth on the phone gave me control of the Mac back. I thought I would mention this in case any one else has seen this and if there should be a fix in the works by someone. It is odd that a bluetooth device can have this level of control over the computer.

Thought I should resolve this one. Seems I needed to upgrade the OS on the Treo. Apparently there was a minor release which fixed the issue (so minor that the only change in the version number is an underscore!) Works much better since the treo upgrade.

  • Odd problem after Kernel update - Bluetooth keeps turning on

I recently upgraded from the 2.6.30 kernel to version 2.6.31. With this upgrade I have noticed something odd - there's a light indicating that the Bluetooth controller is on. This light now turns on when I boot Arch. I have never installed any Bluetooth drivers or software, and I'd prefer if bluetooth disabled as I do not use it with Arch. Does anyone have any ideas?
Btw, my machine is a Thinkpad T61 with a "Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth Controller", according to lsusb.

I've a Thinkpad T60 with the same controller and problem.  I've taken to working around this by disabling bluetooth in rc.local, though I'd be very grateful for a solution.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina's Bluetooth chipset unknown/odd login message on the login screen states Login Window Authentication Login window Name edit text has keyboard focus. In addition, the login screen is not remembering me

I have been experiencing several issues with my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. My MBPR is scheduled to go into the depot. However, I am wondering if anyone may be able to shed light on a few issues as this is the third "official" time my MBPR is going back for service ("one depot" trip; "one authorized" dealer; several in-store visits).
My Bluetooth is stating that the Bluetooth Chipset is Unknown (0). I also have had Bluetooth Preferences mysteriously change on me. In addition, while Bluetooth is off there are two serial modems turning on. I have turned them off, but they continue to pop up.
In addition, when I log in, my MBPR is not remembering me and my login name is not appearing on the slate-gray screen. The name and password are blank and the following message appears in the lower left hand corner. "login window authentication login window Name edit text has keyboard focus."  As a side note, I am the only user. The login issue is a recent occurrence as we just totally wiped it again via a Command + R, and I don't believe I have an accessibility setting set to anything that would cause this, but wanted to check.
Should I be concerned here? Has anyone else had issues like this? I don't want to worry if I don't have to. I have had so many issues over the course of nine months. 5-6 wipes. Airport card replaced and I am about to pull my hair out if my MBPR doesn't come back worldly like clock work this time. I just can't send my days trying to get a $2300 product to work for me any longer. No idea what is wrong with it, but it is driving me insane. Cross your fingers for me and any guidance you have or thoughts would be welcomed. Thank you. EMM

There are a ton of other warnings. Before I go through this again, can someone tell me if this is normal (all of it -- above too); or if these are symptoms is a keystroke logger or hardware issues?
I ask because originally, when my computer went in for diagnostics (more than once), Apple stated the hardware was fine (other than Airport Card -- finally). However, if I've done 5-6 total wipes; created new users; do not have sharing set-up; have not played around in Terminal; and am up-to-date with versions -- and various issues KEEP COMING BACK -- I am left wondering if a keystroke logger would be possible here?!? I thought maybe a faulty logic board, but why would diagnostics be okay, then? Not trying to be hyperbole, just desperate.
Please help me rule keystroke logger out or at least, tell me so I know, so I can take appropriate action. If you think it could be the logic board with symptoms above, that would be a great too.
All I want to do is use the computer as intended, but I can't seem to get a real answer, so after nine months -- I am turning to the communities to see if anyone -- anyone at all -- can help. The last thing I can do is have the MBPR come back from the depot and the same thing occur. Any guidance or advice would be so gratefully appreciated.

  • System Preferences Bluetooth WONT OPEN/ ODD MESSAGE.

    Hi,
I just purchased a new wireless keyboard for my iBook G4. When I go into system preferences and click "Keyboard & Mouse" a message appears that says, " Preferences Error- Could not load Keyboard & Mouse." So I tried to then go into bluetooth and got the same message. Any thoughts?

    HI,
*"When I go into System Profile> Hardware> Bluetooth- it says "No information found."*
That means there was never a Bluetooth Module ever installed.
What you can do is get a D-Link Bluetooth Adapter. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=34
Also available at Amazon. Very inexpensive and uses a USB port. I have been using one on my iBookG4 for years.

  • PC Suite sync via Bluetooth - odd problem !

    Hi,
I have two separate Windows XP installations on my laptop - one I use for work, the other for personal use. I have PC Suite installed on both copies of XP. My Nokia 6300 phone will only pair with the laptop's bluetooth adaptor for one instance of XP at a time. In other words, if I have my laptop running my work copy of XP, and pair my phone to it, it works fine - my phone sees the name of the laptop and PC Suite sync's ok. If I then reboot my laptop and load my personal copy of XP, the phone refuses to respond to PC Suite's sync request unless I remove the pairing for the 'Work' copy of XP from the phone and re-pair to the Personal copy of XP - then it works ok - until I go back to the work copy, and so on.
The phone will not pair with the laptop twice as it is the same bluetooth adapter being used for both instances of XP.
How can I get around this ? Do I need to make the PC name identical in both partitions ? - or does it work on a more detailed level than that ?

I have been using this kind of configuration for some time and have not faced any issues. One of the thing that comes to my mind is that many a times BT takes a long time to recognise the device. The disconnection and reconnection may take some time. That could be one of the reason.
There is absolutely no need to delete the pairing from one OS when you connect to the other one. Also you can keep different names, that is not an issue I suppose. But remember that both the PC's should be paired with the device.

  • Odd quirk during Batch processing...

When I do a batch process (File/automate/batch) it all works fine, provided I leave the cursor where the dialog box keeps popping up. If I move the cursor (to do something else and leave it running in the background) the batch stops until the cursor is back over the dialog box.
I'm using CS5 on OSX SL. The plug-ins that this currently happens with are the Topaz ones, which require that I open them, do what I want, then close and save, and re-open for the next image. All rather tedious, but I don't see any workaround.

Sounds like it might be a shortcoming of the plug-in, in which case its producers might be the only ones who could help you.
Hopefully someone else has more insight into the matter, though.
