Odd Characters in Mail Application

I have recently started using the Mail application as I only have one license for Entourage which my wife uses. Everything was going well with Mail until I noticed that emails from people who use outlook arrived with letters the wrong way round in word ...for example kind regards is shown as kimd regords.
If I click on View then message then plain text alternative; this changes the email so I can read it however when I hit reply the original txt goes back to being in that funny spelling. Then the words that I type all look odd. So for instance my letters m and n are the other way round in a word like son or mum – they come out like som or nun!!
I have searched the forum to understand what to do here but have failed .....can anyone help please?
I am using a PB G4 Mac OS 10.4.7 – By the way I had to type this email from entourage ...whilst my wife had logged off!!!
Thanks
Med

  • View full file names of mail attachment titles in MAIL application (Apple)

    I often get many attachments sent to me and when I am looking through emails for some reason all attachments show up as an ICON with a shortened version of the name of the file. It is always just the first 10 or so characters of the title and the last 3, which is usually the (.gif, .pdf, etc...)
    A lot of what I get usually has the similar titles and only seeing the first few characters is not making things easy for me to find exactly what I am looking for.
    Is there a way to view the full file name within the mail and within the application without having to open each file up each time in the APPLE MAIL application?
    Maybe there's a way to show all attachments as a list with a smaller icon?
    Anything that'll let me view the full title of all attachments would help.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    I agree it is frustrating and literally just sent the wrong attachment to a customer because I was trying to live with the truncated filename system. I did find this nifty app called Mail Iconizer (http://lokiware.info/Mail-Attachments-Iconizer). It's pretty neat as it lets you control how attachments are viewed as well as pdfs and images (based on size). It's a free unlimited trial and $15 if you want to register so it's pretty inexpensive.

  • No application opens when I click on Mail application

    Nothing happens when I click on my Mail application. It jumps once in the doc but nothing opens. I verified permissions, I couldn't re-install from startup CD, so from my HD clicked on the CD, found applications, mail, and tried to re-install it twice but nothing.
    My Mail applications are still there, my mailboxes with messages are in the library, just nothing starts up.
    I had OS X installed 3 weeks ago, set up a .Mac mail account (looked at it but haven't used it) made an IMAP folder, worked fine, except for the Send Items folder, they didn't show up, I clicked accidentally to send the send items to 'Mail's' Send items folder (couldn't find how to put it back), it worked but a day or two later I couldn't open the mail application.
    Other than that I don't think I changed anything. I updated Java, a few times & my computer crashed a few times (probably giving too many commands or too fast)
    I don't have a problem in OS 9 with mail, it's not the server etc.
    I don't really want to reinstall everything since I've had much trouble installing on my external Hard Drive with my iMac DV G3 blue. And I updated everything, including from OS X 10.4.6 TIGER to OS 10.4.11
    Any suggestion how to get it back?
    Thanks, Nicky

    Hi again,
    My med news isn't good, more test need to be done. Keeping fingers crossed.
    For my mail application problem:
    I tried many things but no go, as suggested:
    * Deleted preferences file: /Users/nickyyes/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    * Reinstalled mail several times after verifying disk & Permissions. Even tried fixing permissions (had a fetchmail error) from CD, then from HD. No go.
    -The last log for installing says: Package Authoring Error: Package specified by <options mpkg='com.apple.mpkg.OptionalInstalls'/> not found.
    Then it goes on to install anyway and says:
    ./Applications/Mail.app (version 2.0.7.7460200) was not installed because a newer version (2.1.3.7530100) already exists.
    It end up going over files deleting obsolete files and installing 2.
    * I also got the black Darwin screen a couple of times.
    * Downloaded the combo: Here I ran into new trouble: Verification failed.
    I downloaded it so many times that I was over the limit but each time it said:
    WARNING: The following disk images failed to mount:
    image MacOSXupdCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg Reason: invalid checksum or codec something.
    After days of looking for answers I found out that Mac users who use a router have that problem with .dmg. Downloaded via my PC and transferred it to Mac. That worked! Did it a few times but no mail application opens.
    The only thing I can think off is to delete everything to do with mail, reinstall mail, verify permissions & disk and run the combo again.
    Losing messages is ok (IMAP) but can I do any harm if I delete all mail stuff below?
    *CAN I DELETE THESE* (found by finder)?
    'Mail' folder in:
    * /Applications/
    * /Library/
    * /users/nickyme/Library/
    Not sure if I should delete these:
    * /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts
    * /Applications/Stuffit 10.0/Examples/Stuffit Express Examples/StuffIt X and Mail.app & Tar.gz and Mail.app
    This seems odd, delete?
    * /Applications/Adobe Acrobat 5.0/Plug-Ins/SendMail
    Don't know about these, delete them?:
    * /System/Library/PreferecePanes/ Accounts.prefPane
    * Mac.prefPane
    * /OSInstall.mkg.241KOK2es/Mail.installplan
    * /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log
    * /Library/Receipts/Mail.pkg
    Then there are a bunch of mail related files in different applications but I haven't used any for sending mail, so I guess I can ignore them, right?
    * DreamWeaver - MS word, iBackup has a Mail.plist, etc.
    If it's ok to delete those and it doesn't work I think I need to start from 0 but that…I'll use my OS 9.2.2 mail for a while.
    Thanks,
    Nicky

  • Mail application storage

    I am in the process of cleaning my computer. On my early 2008 iMac, and the operating system it came with, there were folders which stored accumulated e-mails, a folder for each recipient. I  now have Maverick. Is there a similar set of files on this operating system, and how do I find them?

    Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I can log into iCloud with Apple ID, and I can send and receive mail that way...the problem seems to be with the Mail application, where my outgoing server reads 'offline', no matter what.
    Curiously, I got another storage message today saying my iCloud storage is maxed out at 25GB and that I won't be able to send or receive.  It's odd, b/c when I check my account status on my iPad, I have TONS of storage left.  I don't get it.  And I can still send and receive messages via the online service...

  • Really odd bug in Mail

    I occasionally receive pictures from a japanese friend's mobile phone. The file names are like 画像-0203.jpg. The odd thing is mail will just decide to display whichever picture it wants regardless of the number. Let me explain clearly.
    (for those wondering, 画像 is pronounced Ga Zoh, it just means Image)
    I receive a mail with image 画像-0198.jpg, it's a family playing Wii in japan.
    Maybe a little later I will receive another mail from the same person, image 画像-0203.jpg, which in reality is someone singing karaoke but instead displays in the email as 画像-0198.jpg the family playing Wii in japan.
    Now if i SAVE those pics, they will save as the correctly named files. If i view as a slideshow, they will display as the correct images. But for some reason in the emails, they all get displayed as the First file i receive.
    I tried checking what happens when I quit Mail and reopen. Well the first email I click on from that person will become Mail's favorite and Mail decides to show THAT one in every email. I'm assuming Mail is having trouble with Unicode. What doesn't make sense is, even if Mail is viewing the Unicode as its double-byte equivalent, that's only 4 characters... it shoud be able to differentiate between "DGHY-182" and "DGHY-205" (just as an example).
    This HAS to be a bug.

    The ability to permanently delete a message without moving it to the Trash first, by means of Edit > Cut (⌘X), seems to be a feature rather than a bug -- I assume you meant Command-X, not Ctrl-X.
    It should only work if the main Mail window is on the front and the messages list pane is active, though. Typing ⌘X when a non-editable message window is on the front should do nothing (and it does nothing on my system, just beeps).
    Could it be that, for some reason, the message window wasn't the frontmost window when you hit ⌘X? That would certainly explain what happened and it would be intended behavior...

  • Special characters in mail

    Hi,
    I m working on mails application and the subject part of the header is encoded .
    It is like Subject: =?iso-8859-1?q?,=B8,.=B7=B4akkentech=20=20Mail=20sent=20for=20testing=20(?=
    some time it is utf-8 encoded .
    I want some code where I can decode these into normal characters Whether these part is in the body or subject
    Thanks in Advance...
    Manohar

    Thanks for the screenshot!
    It looks like Latin-1 text is being read as if it were UTF-8 by a defective UTF-8 converter, as used to be found some time ago in Windows Outlook and IE.   For example the sequence "éro", which is Latin-1 bytes E9 72 6F, is defectively converted to E9 B2 AF and then read as UTF-8, which is the chinese character

  • OS X Mail application replies with different identities.

    Odd behavior from the Mail application:
    I have a couple of different email addresses I use for different purposes.  Usually that works, but...
    If I send a company email from one account (say, [email protected]) and I receive a reply from that company the reply will, of course, be in the "[email protected]" mailbox.
    If I reply to the message (replying to the reply to my original message) you'd think that the reply would be sent from the same mailbox... right?
    Doesn't happen.  This new message will contain the thread of the conversation so far, which is good, but it might be sent from a DIFFERENT account, for example, [email protected] and not [email protected]
    So the company has received messages from two people, for all they know, causing much confusion.
    This seems to be a definate bug... why would it possibly be desirable to reply to a message from a different account than it was received???
    Hopefully someone will fix this...
    Faz

    I did.  I also have an iCloud account.  I sent messages between my primary account and my iCloud account. When you reply to a message sent from my iCloud account, the reply message goes back to the iCloud address as it should.  However, when you reply to a message from you primary account, it is sent to the deleted account.  The message is states at the bottom that it was SENT from the deleted account. Still frustrated.

  • Mail application will not close OR force quit

    I own a macbook pro running mountain lion.  The problem is that my mail application says its open but i can't find a way to close it or force quit it.  Is there any way to stop this bcause it won't let my computer shut down because mail is open. Thanks.

    3rd party Safari items would include SafariStand, SAFT, PicLens, Inquisitor, etc. They are installed in your HD>Library or User Account Library>InputManagers folder.
    I suspect you may have created some directory problems (on top of the existing problems) when you shut down your computer with applications still active. A second time won't matter. After the shutdown, restart holding down the Shift key until the log-in screen appears (above the Log-in screen you'll see "Safe Mode". After the log-in completes, go to the Finder: In your HD>Library, look in the Startupitems folder for any odd items. If anything is there, let me know what is installed.
    If nothing odd there, then restart the computer, except this time hold down the P/R/Command/Option keys until you hear 3 chimes. Then release the keys to continue to the log-in etc.

  • Mail applications is blank when I open it, then it closes and opens again by itself, keeping blank

    In my Ipad, when I open Mail application it is blank. It stays like this for a few seconds, then it closes and open again by itself.  Keeping all time blank.

    Have you tried to force quit the app. Double tap the home button. Scroll sideways if needed to bring the mail app preview up on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Tap on the home page preview to exit the mode. Then try your mail again.
    Other things people have needed to do, especially after an update is to go into the settings, mail contacts and calendars, delete their mail account (it only deletes it off the iPad not out of existence) then exit out, go back i and re-enter the info.

  • Cannot send email vial MAIL application in Tiger

    1. When sending email using .mac account in MAIL application, my password is not accepted. The email is deposited in the outbox and is not sent (no whooshing sound). And no reflection of the email is in the sent box.
    2. When sending email using an alternative earthlink account, my password is accepted and the email is sent with whooshing sound, and reflection of sent email is found in the sent box.
    3. Within MAIL, I notice that my .mac address is "Cristino Vicerra Jr Cristino Vicerra Jr <[email protected]>" (name is repeated twice); and that my .mac account is "[email protected]@mac.com" . Is this a significant to my problem of not being able to send email? How can I correct this?
    Can anyone help me? Thanks

    Welcome to the Discussions.
    Please read the following Knowledge base article, and try changing to Port 587, or if that fails change to use the SMTP provided by your ISP as the Outgoing server in the .mac account. See:

  • Spontaneous trouble receiving mail from Mail Application and Web Mail

    Hello,
    Unfortunately I need some assistance. For unknown reasons, today at about 12 PM our in house email server (10.3.9) started failing to allow any user to connect to download mail. I have users running POP and other users running IMAP accounts that had the same lack of function.
    When I connect using web mail I get the following error:
    Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost. 61 : Connection refused
    When I connect from the Mail application I get the following error:
    The server "mail.mycompany.com" refused to allow a connection on port 110

When I connect using the Server Admin program the IMAP and POP logs are empty despite being set to the “All events” setting, and the SMTP log contains the following message frequently despite still being able to send email from the affected accounts:
    (temporary failure. Command output: couldn't connect to lmtpd: Unknown Error Code: 0_ 421 4.3.0 deliver: couldn't connect to lmtpd_ )
    I have restarted the server, I have run disk utility to repair permissions and made no intentional adjustments to the server in the last week. The last adjustment to the mail server I made was about 1 month ago to turn on IMAP authentication to allow me to switch from a POP to an IMAP email account.
    Please help me figure this out!
    Thanks in advance.

Mike
    (PS I am a veterinarian, not an IT guru. I run my own mail and web servers because with Apple products, I can.)

    Thanks for your assistance.
    I found the logs and while there is a mail.log there is no mailaccess.log file.
    There is a mailaccess.log.0.gz which I decompressed and I also decompressed the mailacess.log.1.gz.
    The mailaccess.log.1 file contains entries from July 10th through July 11th.
    The mailaccess.log.0 file contains entries from August 14th through August 15th (today). Seems like there was a long period that did not get archived correctly.

    Looks like my mail database is trashed. Let me know if this is correct and if so, how I should go about trying to restore/rebuild, etc.
    Thanks again for your assistance.

  • Opening mail application from the dock sometimes doesn't open window.

    In Mountain Lion, sometimes when I open Mail on the dock with a single left mouse (or touchpad) click, the Mail application opens, as shown in the menu bar, but a mail window doesn't open. I must then click or double click on it to get it to open a window. No other application in the dock behaves this way. How can I fix this?

    Is there a problem with mail opening from the dock?
    NOPE!  Do you have open at login enabled?  Is Mail listed in Login Items through System Preferences?

  • Today I tried to shutdown my computer and a window popped up saying that my computer could not shut down because the mail application was open, it wouldn't close, so I used a key combination to force mail to quit and now I can't log in. Help?

    Okay, so I have been having trouble with my mail application all week. The window refused to open and would not quit. Today, I tried to shut down my mac and a pop up window told me that I was unable to shutdown because mail was open. After using a key combination, I successfully was able to quit mail with force quit. Then I was able to shut down with out a problem. However, upon rebooting, my computer refused to let me loggin. I put in my password correctly but then the rainbow pinwheel showed up and stalled for a minute and then my screen flashed and the gray screen reappeared, expecting a password. I tried turning it off and back on again with no luck. I also reset my password after reading a similar discussion, but I still can't log in. How can I fix this?

  • Recently I have been unable to access our Comcast Xfinity E-mail application in Firefox. It opens but is "frozen" so that I am unable to open e-mail messages or the full inbox.

    I have been using Firefox instead of MS Explorer to access our Comcast E-mail account on my Lenova laptop for several months.
    Firefox was loaded onto my Lenova Laptop during mid-2011.
    I continued to primarily use MS Explorer as my search engine while accessing our Comcast e-mail account until the latter part of 2011. At that time I was urged to try Firefox when I seemed to have slow processing speed in Explorer.
    It worked great, and I was very pleased with the processing speed while using my e-mail application (seemed much faster than MS Explorer).
    A couple weeks ago I first discovered I could not open any of the listed e-mails in the Comcast Inbox, nor am I able to expand to a full view of the inbox instead of the summary view of only the few latest new message titles. New incoming e-mails appear in the listing, but I am unable to open them from my laptop.
    I have no problem with our Comcast E-mail application while using MS Explorer on my laptop (except for slower processing speed).
    We also can access all Comcast e-mail functions from our Dell desktop in both Firefox and Explorer; therefore the cause of the problem doesn't appear to be Comcast.
    Any suggestions on what caused this problem and how to fix it? Thanks for any help you can provide.
