Odd colorsync profile behavior when printing

I'm having a bit of an odd situation when printing out of Aperture. When choosing ANY colorsync profile in the print dialog box that ends in .icc, the color of the preview image and the resulting print is off horribly, in the blue/purple direction. When a profile that doesn't contain .icc in the listed name is chosen, the print is fine.
Example
+SPR2400 PremSmgls Photo.icc+ results in wrong color rendering
+SPR2400 PremiumSemigloss+ works just fine
This isn't limited to Epson profiles; I have a few profiles from Ilford and Innova which are doing the same thing.
I should note that this didn't used to happen, and started after the upgrade to 2.14 and/or 10.6/1---i did both basically simultaneously, so I'm not sure which might be the culprit.
The error doesn't happen when printing out of Photoshop, for what it's worth. And yes, I have color management turned off at the printer level, so it's only being handled by the application.
Thanks.

I had a comparable problem with my Epson Stylus Photo R1800. Once I set the profile back to the SPR1800 Premium Glossy the funky colors were corrected. Then, however, prints were far too dark. Setting the Gamma in the Print dialog to 1.3 got it back to an acceptable quality, albeit a bit too dark still. I have spent a lot of electrons with Epson support and they were of minimal help through this entire fiasco. Basically I had to "hunt and peck" with different settings to get to the point where the print quality was acceptable. I have shared my findings with them so hopefully they'll pass them on to folks who contact them. They say they are "constantly" working on new drivers to solve such problems, but gave me no projection as to when that might be. All this started after upgrading to 10.6.

  • ICC profile conflicts when printing from Aperture?

I have worked with Aperture now for two years, and I still have problems printing anything that is close enough to what I see on my calibrated screen. And believe me, I have done some reading on color management and ICC profiles. I suspect that Aperture pulls in ICC color profiles in a way that doesn't allow reproducing what I see on the screen. I wonder if these problems are related to the Registered ColorSync devices: opening ColorSync Utility under Devices reveals a bunch of default printers with a diversity of profiles, even if I have no access to these printers (in part these are network printers of my previous employment). I cannot figure out how I can delete these entries: I tried to find remaining printer profiles of these printers in my files, but could not find anything. How can I delete these entries, and can these entries cause color profile conflicts?
More specificially: I work with Aperture 2.1.3 and view my photos on a calibrated 23" Cinema display, run from a MBP with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 10.5.6, and 2GB of memory. My monitor is calibrated with a Spyder for D65 and gamma of 2.2. I print with an Epson 3800 on Epson paper.
Here is my problem: despite calibrated monitor I don't get the prints to look even remotely close to what I get on my screen. Of course, I use the correct ICC profiles for my papers, and of course I have Aperture (and not the printer) run color management. It seems, however, that my prints resemble my monitor more if I use strange profiles such as "Wide Gamut RGB" or "ProPhoto RGB" as my monitor's profile instead of the calibrated D65, gamma 2.2.
In detail, here are my regular print settings in Aperture:
    Print Mode: AccuPhoto HD
Color Mode: Off (No Color Management)
Output Resolution: SuperPhoto - 1440 dpi
Advanced Color Settings: Epson Driver Color Management is Off.
In the Aperture Print menu I use under Printer Selection:
ColorSync Profile: for example, Pro38 PGPP, when I use Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy
    Black Point Compensation checked.
    Gamma: 1:00
Under Layout Options I use Print Resolution: Use Best DPI
With these settings the prints look significantly colder than what I see on the screen. Of course, a certain amount of the warmth of the screen colors comes from the calibration to D65 and gamma of 2.2, but shouldn't this give me the best correspondence between the calibrated screen and the print (using of course the color management of the application with ICC profiles, not the printer driver color management)?
I tried the same in CS4 and Lightroom, but no difference. Again, the problem is not that the prints are terrible: they are just not very close to what I see on the calibrated screen.
Where do I make a mistake? All suggestions are very welcome! This is driving me crazy. Many thanks for your help!
    Best,
    Kai

While the technical aspects of color management are complex, they are largely irrelevant for users.
The following steps have worked well for me:
Step One: Calibrate your monitor. I use the Datacolor Spyder. This produces a monitor profile. Use System Preferences to set your monitor to use this profile. Don't use this profile for anything else and give it a clear name so that you don't confuse it with a printer profile.
Step Two: Download and install the latest drivers for your printer. Buy a small box of photo paper (gloss, semi-gloss) from the manufacturer of your printer. Make sure that you have the correct ICC profiles for this paper and printer. You are trying to establish a baseline.
Step Three: Pick an image with a reasonable range of colors and exposures. (Don't start with a "difficult" image.) Turn soft proofing off and adjust the image as desired.
Step Four: Send this image to the printer. Load up the manufacturer's paper.
Step Five: In the "print" dialog, go to the "Printer Settings" sub menu and select the correct "Quality and Media" and the appropriate setting for "photo" quality. Make sure that all of the color options are neutral. Save.
Step Six: Back on the "Print" dialog select the correct ICC profile for your paper/printer. (Careful, DON'T use the calibrated monitor profile!) Adjust other settings as required. Save and name the preset.
Step Seven: Print and Pray. (And pray I haven't missed a step - sorry I'm not at my Mac. From your initial post, it sounds like you know how to do all of this.)
The results should be reasonably close. (That is why you should use the printer manufacturer's own paper and profiles as a starting point.)
If you are happy, great - get a beer. If not, try the following, making only one change at a time:
== Turn Soft Proofing on using the profile of the paper/printer. (Don't select the profile for your monitor, or any other.) Do the screen and print match now? If so, then you know to do your adjusting with soft proofing on. Remember, soft proofing is not exact - it is merely an attempt to make your screen look like the combination of paper and printer.
== If Soft Proofing makes your monitor look LESS like the print, then don't don't use Soft Proofing.
== If the results are close, you can make fine adjustments using the "Printer Settings" sub menu and saving presents. For example; I use a lot of CostCo paper in my Canon Pixma Pro9000. CostCo says that their paper mimics Canon's Photo Paper Pro, so I use the settings and profile for that paper, but I tweek the cyans and reds a bit in printer settings.
I have found that Red River profiles are a very good match for their papers.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Xerox 7400 weird behavior when printing from Illustrator/Acrobat CS3

    Hi,
Since I have Leopard, every time I try to print anything from Illustrator on the 7400N and doing more than one copy, it looks like the printer takes every copy as a separate print job (but in the print queue looks like one).
This is what it's going on:
    - Illustrator takes much more time to process the same printout, let's say... if I want to print 20 copies, it looks like it takes 20 times the amount of time it does when printing just one copy.
    - The printer takes much more time to print, and before it prints every copy I see the message "Processing Data - Please Wait" in the 7400 LCD Display. That message should pop up only one time at the beginning, not every time it makes a copy.
But all this happens when I print vector images, if try to print a raster image from Photoshop for instance, or a PDF document from Preview (which rasterizes the image before sending the printjob to the 7400), everything behaves normally.
It looks to me that the problem pops up only if If the printjob is sent using postscript language. I had CS3 and the same printer under Tiger and no problem at all, so I believe it has a to be a Leopard problem. Any help will be appreciated.

    Gah!
Why the hell is that disabled by default???
The other way I fixed it was to change from "Times" to "Times New Roman" and that worked (even without the Download PPD Fonts option checked).
    Thanks!

  • User gets odd behavior when print previewing calendar

User calls with an odd problem.
She is using 32 bit IE 9 with our SP 2010 farm.
She goes to her department calendar. She sees events.
She presses Print Preview. No events are shown on the page.
She tries to export the data to Outlook - it tells her there is too much data.
    She calls me.
I look - her default view is running into the resource throttling of the farm. So I try to create a unique view that only shows this week's events.
It works fine for me. Print preview and printing work as well.
When she looks at it in her browser, it works fine.
When she tries to print preview - no events show up on the preview page.
She tries to export from the new view - Outlook gets no events.
She is using IE9, so the IE7 comments in old threads are not relevant.
I set the web part configuration to 12 inches as one conversation suggestions. That doesn't help.
Does anyone else have any ideas of things to try?

When I look at the custom calendar within SharePoint Designer, the page has a ListView Web Part but not an XsltListViewWebPart.
I have tried several times to step through blog entries that describe editing the page, setting the view of the web part, etc. At one point whatever I tried turned the calendar view into a list view ... sigh. I created a new calendar view and made it
    the default.
I have asked the user to try the print preview out today to see if it works for her after I created the new view.
The really odd thing about all of this is that at least 2 people don't have the problem with not seeing event data in the print preview.
It _almost_ sounds like some sort of machine specific issue she is having.
I wonder if I should ask the admins to repair Office 2010 on her machine to make certain the DLLs are all working properly.

  • Deleted icc profiles still showing up in profile list when printing.

I've deleted some old printer profiles, but they still show up in my profile list. Any suggestions? Also, is it possible to rename profiles so that they show up with the new names?

You have to change the internals of a profile to change it's name -- we don't show filenames.
And if the profile is still showing up, then ColorSync still thinks that file is installed somewhere.  For printers, it may be installed in the printer driver directory, not just in the user visible profile directories.

  • Strange behavior when printing a PO in SRM

    Hi,
We just done a copy of environment and have upgraded the kernel. When we try to print a PO (from the output tab in the PO) we are getting the error Device Window default printer does not exist. Moreover when i went in debug i found that the error appears when the conversion exist SPDEV is called. There a select is carried out in table TSP03L with the value stored in the printer area. What is weird is that the entry exist in the table but the value stored on the screen seem to hold a special characters that makes its unable to find the correct entry.
Have you ever encounter this issue. Is it possible to define different character set for the back-end and the srm web pages?
    Thank you for your help.

I found a solution.   Rename the Text layer by adding a space before or after the numerals.  Now the duplicates are named as the written text with a suffix  increased by 1 for each additional duplicated layer.

  • PDFMaker changes page orientation when printing to pdf

Hi all! I am praying for an answer. My job requires me to convert huge word documents to pdf using the pdfmaker add-in with acrobat Professional 8.1.3. My problem is as follows and has occured in two seperate documents. I have Microsoft word 2007 and run on a VIsta OS.
So my problem is when I create a pdf from word acrobat for some odd reason changes any page's orientation that contain excel spreadsheets that have been inserted (I believe through copy and paste and they are not linked to excel). Thus I get a page with a landscape spreadsheet with a profile orientation and it cuts off the information for my client. By the way, it does the complete opposite of whatever orientation I choose.
Here are some things I have tried: I tried saving document as a 97-2003 word file and create pdf from that version, I have changed the PDFmaker advanced settings for auto-rotate pages and tried all three options to no avail. I really need some help fast! I will love anyone who solves this problem for me.
    Thanks,
           Jason.

GREAT NEWS!!! I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!
Okay so after a lot of frustration and mountain dew I have figured this out, but first the problem is simpler then I listed it. So here is the actual problem:
I had a document with multiple sections and one section was oriented landscape while the rest were profile. When printing to PDF the resulting pdf file had all sections in profile and ignored any change in orientation and cut off/cropped out elements of the pages I had in landscape orientation.
    SOLUTION:
The solution to this problem is in two parts: 1) changing some print preview stuff in word, and 2) changing preferences in pdfmaker/acrobat ribbon. For this solution to actually work however you must have the landscaped sections sectioned off by inserting section breaks in word.
Step 1) Go to the section where you document orientation is changed from the rest of the document. Press the office button (in 2007) and drag down to print>print preview. You will notice that your section has now reverted to profile. (Ah Ha!) Change the page orientation to landscape.
"But wait, now my margins or elements are getting cut off" you say. Go to Page setup. Make sure that near the bottom it says "Apply to: This section"
Now make it landscape and this changes the margins to also be landscape.
Step 2) Click on your Acrobat tab and go to preferences. Under pdfmaker settings click advanced settings and as Bill and I have said change auto-rotate pages to individually.
    AND YOU ARE DONE!!!!!

  • Colorsync - how do I create a profile for HP printer

Help. I have a new printer (HP Photosmart C4750), and it's profile doesn't at all match my onscreen colors. I need to create a colorsync profile that will address this, but am having NO success with the information I'm finding. Anyone?

Your best bet (cheapest) is to look on HP's site and see if they have profiles for that model printer. You may also find them on the disks the printer came with.
Be aware that printer profiles are very specific. The exact same model of printer must be used when creating one, and the exact same paper. When you're done, that profile is only good for the paper used as glossy paper will give you completely different results than plain paper. It's also brand specific. If you used HP glossy paper, you can't substitute Epson glossy paper, or even a different type of HP glossy paper. Color will come out different.
So if HP does have any profiles you can get for your printer, they should also be noted as to what paper they are for.
Next least expensive is to have an outside service create your profiles for you. They would send you target images to print, which need to be printed in a very specific manner. You then send the printed sheets to them and they create a profile from them to be emailed to you upon payment.
Here's one place which can do that. You can find a few more by looking through these links.
After that, you need to shell out some bucks. Least expensive is an X-Rite ColorMunki at about $320 at various online stores. I've tried them, and while they work, they don't produce very good printer profiles. What I use is Monaco (X-Rite) Profiler with a DTP-70 auto reading spectrophotometer. However, this type of setup will set you back about $4,500.

  • HP Laserjet P3015 double sided - the last odd page prints on the same page when printing two copies

HP Laserjet P3015 double sided printing is set up on Windows 7.  When printing two copies of a document, if it has odd number of pages, the last page is printed on both sides of the page. There is no page feed for the last page.
Suppose say there are 3 pages in a document and you want to print two copies. It prints like 1/2, 1/2 and 3/3.  The third page (odd number) print on the same page. The last page page does not print on two pages.
It works alright on Windows XP.

Hope that you have configured the correct paper type and size in the printer hardware and also selecting the same paper tray, size, type from the printer driver while printing.
It may be caused due to the job formatting done by the application software or some jobs settings done from the job/application or printer driver.  Check by toggling the 'collate' option and also try to print from a different application software.

  • When printing a PDF file I would like to ensure that all 'chapters' print on the odd numbered pages.

I need a way to set up a PDF file so that when I print it all new chapters (and single sided forms) print on the odd pages. These PDFs are available for viewing on the network but occasionally there is a demand to print one of them. Is there a 'chapter start' (or similar command) which will allow the PDF to  more properly format when printing.

There's no automated process because I don't think Acrobat could determine what was the beginning of a chapter. However, you can insert blank pages that start the first page of chapters to an odd-numbered page.
In Acrobat XI, that is Tools > Pages > More Insert Options > Insert Blank Page

  • Odd behavior when duplicating pages

I have run into some odd behavior when duplicating pages.
First I spent many hours trying to acomplish a double trigger effect in which the last trigger opened a large image in a pop up window. Thanks to help from agm 123 and Sachin Hasija  see the posts here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5186239#5186239
    And the result here: http://ljusa.businesscatalyst.com/stockholm--1.html
I had to do a number of work arounds, but succeeded and will help anyone interested to reproduce this type of effect.
My next step was to recreate this effect for another 50 pages. The best way I have found is to duplicate the first page. This is where it gets weird.
When I create a duplicate and replace the images in the newly created pages (done by changing the fill to the new image) with different ones and save it the changes are effected on the original page, not the clone. No big problem, just switch the names and continue.
The next problem that occurs is that when I go to make further copies a variety of odd behaviors creep in. The biggest problem is a repositioning or resizing of photo frames/containers. The images do not change, just move as the frame resizes. When I try to resize the frame it snaps back to it's larger new size. This is a phenomenon that I have seen in other instances in work with lightboxes and slideshows. It seems that some other unseen element has jumped into the frame with the original frame.
The method I have used to create these pages is as described in the post at: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5186239#5186239
It involves creating a blank composition widget and then placing a composition lightbox widget trigger into the blank hero.
I have already invested more time than I should have on this and would like to keep it simple, yet as I have 50 pages to go I could start from scratch if someone has a better method of doing this.
    Suggestions?

    Just an update.
I haven't seen the naming problem with duoplicates reoccur. I am however still stuggling with duplicates.
I have a page with 5 image frames linked to images which in turn trigger a lightbox. When I create a duplicate of a page there is always at least one of my image frames that moves and or a link to an image that is dead. The only recourse I have had is to recreate one of the lifgtboxes for each new page I create. With all the formatting this is time consuming.
I have tried copying and pasting the entire page into a blank page, but then there are even more problems.
I have also tried to save my lightbox as a graphic style, but that dooesn't seem to work either.
Please Help! I've got at least 45 more of these pages to replicate1

  • Tweak color profile when printing on plain paper?

If Im unhappy with the colors when printing on plain paper, can it be changed?
..this is on a five cart Photosmart Premium c410a that uses 564 tanks.
In particular, yellow is too dark, a bit "orangy" and photos are a bit weird: sky looks slightly smoggy brown.
In other words my question is if its possible to  tweak the color profile the HP driver uses when printing using plain paper -- for daily use.

Have you found a solution to this? I'm wondering if the same can be done for the photo prints as well...when I print photos, they turn out darker and have a purple-hue to them. Please let me know, I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Odd characters when printing PDFs from iMac (10.6.3)

When printing a PDF from the iMac (new 27") above, we get odd characters printed down the right margin of the page. These characters do not appear when viewing in either Acrobat Reader or Preview. This also does not happen when printing from Parallels. The printer is an HP Officejet 6000. Just to throw an added wrench into this, the problem does not happen when printing from a new Mac Mini (also 10.6.3) to the same printer. Any solutions?

Check whether the fonts installed and active are the same. In particular, look for font conflicts in Font Book, and resolve them so both computers are using the same versions.

  • Colorsync Profile for exporting to print

    Hi All,
What Colorsync Profile should I use for a generic printing service? I know I should work in / export in sRGB for the web but what about if I am getting prints done from a local photo lab?
    Cheers,
    W00DY

Absolutely use the calibrated profile. sRGB originated as an approximation of what most CRT monitors could display. But it was just an approximation and differs quite a bit from Color LCD or any calibrated profile. Color LCD for MacBook Pros is actually quite a bit smaller than sRGB and reflects the fact that laptop LCDs can't display the same range of colours as, say, and Apple Cinema Display. Have a look at the different profiles in ColorSync Utility to get a feel for what they all look like. Select a profile and then rotate the 3-D map of the profile in the right-hand side pane.
If you have calibrated your monitor and they came out with a green tint I would suggest that the problem is more likely with the printer rather than your monitor. (You are way ahead of 95% of people - myself included - by using a hardware calibrator; nonetheless, you could do the calibration again and compare the resulting profiles by, say, switching between them and seeing how that affects your colour display on your monitor or by comparing them in ColorSync Utility.)
To isolate the problem - try using a different printer for your next run and compare. Indeed, if you have the time and care enough, try sending the same file to various printers to see the variation. Pick one you are happy with and then stick with them.
