Odd crash (kind of) wouldn't start issue

Ok...
3ghz 2meg ram x1900 etc
Bootcamp partition on system drive Fat32 windows runs fine.
reFIT (I think that's what it's called) is used to switch Mac/Doz on start up.
Had it a month and rock solid - both sides.
SO --
I'm sitting here last night (after hours for AppleCare and with my laptop at work (which becomes important later...)) and working in AfterEffects on the Mac side. It may or may not be important, but I haven't booted to Windows in maybe a week or more. And I'm noticing that I'm getting some very slow responses and ... wait... my Right Click isn't working. Wait... now I can't click close a window... what? QUIT!! nope... apple-Q isn't working either... won't force quit from dock... I'm still in AE and I apple-option-esc to force quit and then SHUT DOWN from the finder.
Mac shuts down fine.
Wow - that was odd.
I power back on after about 30 seconds or so and all I get is a grey screen. Remember, I haven't rebooted my machine in a good week or maybe two. But 2 minutes go by and still a grey screen -- no reFIT (if that's what it's called) nothing... just the grey screen.
I force power off and try again. Same thing. Power pushes once and monitor comes on... but no other power pushes to force drives or whatever.
Crud! I know where to LOOK for all those special hold this down key combination, but I can't remember... well - maybe I remember.
Mouse Button - Grey screen/Drawer opens (insert disc 1 from install set) still grey screen so
C key - Grey screen no spinning from optical drive
D key - grey screen no spinning from optical drive (hardware check)
At this point I unplug EVERYTHING for 10 minutes (I timed it!!)
Apple-S - Grey screen etc.
Shift - Grey screen
Now, sometimes I'm getting the reFit showing up on the grey screen, sometimes not.
Ok... so I reach over to my G4 sitting under the desk to turn it on and get online. I press power and NOTHING... NOTHING!!! Brick!!!
Go running to my wife... "Did we have any power spikes today?" Nope.
So I unplug everything and go have dinner.
I opened up the box and pressed some little white button on the mother board that kind of looked like something kind of like a PMU switch...
I still can't boot to the install disc but I finally get single user working. I do fsck -y /sbin/fsck -y etc
It gives me 5 lines of "code" and that's it. Ok, maybe everything's fine?
So I "reboot" --
I get an APPLE on my Grey screen now!!!!
5 -- 5!! minutes later it boots up and I'm getting a warning saying the disk I've inserted is unreadable by this computer. What? My install disc??? So I reboot again...
5 minutes later, same warning -- But wait!! As before, the install disc is actually there... but my 500 gig SATA drive I installed after Macworld isn't... is THIS the disk it's talking about??
So I reformat and all "seems" to be good.
Is it?
The drive didn't have anything on it... was sitting there empty but formatted.
Are these exclusive problems related to something worse? Am I good for another month?
Thoughts?????
Thanks!
CaptM

Is it?
Unfortunately only your Mac Pro's going to know that. It really depends on what went wrong in the first place. This sort of behaviour is quite typical of a drive corruption so be sure to Verify/Repair both drives in Disk Utility from the Installation DVD 1.
Are these exclusive problems related to something worse? Am I good for another month?
Personally, I'd spend the time to zero the drive in Disk Utility and also be sure that it's using the GUID Partition Table.

  • IMac wouldn't start fully

    Hi all,
Recently my 24" aluminum iMac (just a few months old) wouldn't start. It just didn't got past the gray screen with the Apple logo and the round loading thing (although it did moved). I tried everything, eventually I could only start from the instalation disc, reinstalled Leopard and restored my files with time machine. But ever since, iTunes and quicktime crashes sometimes. Today I tried to install Windows XP with bootcamp, but somehow he not only formatted the partition, it formatted my whole Harddrive. I don't know if the two problems are related, but it's pretty strange.
Does anyone know what the cause could be, or if this could be because of broken hardware?
    Kind regards,
    Timo Aaldriks

    Hi Timo:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Does anyone know what the cause could be, or if this could be because of broken hardware?
Hard to tell. However, rather than try all sorts of troubleshooting things since your computer is in warranty, I suggest you take the computer to an Apple store (if one is nearby) or call Applecare with a warranty issue.

  • [SOLVED] Deluge kept crashing, upgraded - won't even start!

    Hello,
I've been googling this for a while, and haven't found any answers. I've been using Deluge without any issues since 2008, but since I migrated to Arch, it's been crashing randomly. After crashing, the UI wouldn't display my torrents, but something was clearly going on, since my external HDD where my downloads are got turned on (it goes into standby when not used).  So, I updated it (sudo pacman -S deluge), and that didn't help at all. Today, I figured I'd upgrade some other stuff aswell to see if that'd help. I upgraded libtorrent, libtorrent-rasterbar, python, and some other python-related packages.
Now, if I click the deluge icon, it launches and closes straight away. If I launch it from terminal I get:
    [pauli@vaio ~]$ deluge

I've tried upgrading everything crypto related, but that doesn't help either.
    deluge 1.2.3-4 + libtorrent-rasterbar 0.15.0-4 + libtorrent 0.12.6-2 + python 2.6.5-3 (also latest pygtk etc.)
Does anyone know of a way to fix this? Thanks in advance.
    EDIT:
there seems to be something wrong with libcrypto, I can't launch transmission either!

Ok, so after messing around with all kinds of things and rebooting, my xserver stopped working. So I did a full update, and now it works again.
I guess the reason for this is that older packages are compiled for libcrypto 0.9 and libssl 0.9, and since I updated those, it failed??? In any case, it works now. I also had to do ln -s libcrypto.so libcrypto.so.0.9.8 and ln -s libssl.so libssl.so.0.9.8 to get pacman running, but removed the links once the upgrading was done.
Not quite sure if Deluge still keeps crashing, only time will tell.

  • Firefox (Linux) crashes as soon as it "starts" and the saved tabs won't go away no matter what, profilemanager doesn't work, only opens another firefox.

My firefox on linux ubuntu 9.1 ALWAYS crashes on startup. But only on my regular logon (is it another Profile?), it says hrtimer_nanosleep on system monitor on the firefox_bin. It just did that one time and i can't get it to work. It crashes as soon as i start firefox with the tabs that were upp when it started crashing. Safe-mode is tested and did not work. I saw something about deleting / create new profile. but when i type in firefox -ProfileManager its only starts up another firefox that crashes. And i also saw that someone erased a file named secmod.db. I do NOT have this file. The whole firefox/mozilla files are all messed up in my system but where do i find the profile? It's all a mess this thing. and it's making me kinda pissed.

    If that does not work,
Start '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web Link} by holding down the '''<Shift><br> ''(Mac Options)'' ''' key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
Start your '''Computer''' in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try '''Safe''' web sites.

  • Brand new rMBP wouldn't start out of box without charger

Just got my 6th rMBP (all previous 5 were returned for various reasons such as yellowish display, poor battery, creaking, etc).  This one is the 15" 2.3 16gb 512gb model whereas the other rMBP were all base 15" models.
When i tried to start this rMBP, it would not start.  At first i thought I didn't press the button enough and so I pressed it several times.  Got worried and then plugged it in and pressed the button...still would not start then after about 20 seconds of charging, it started.
After going through all the setup processes, the battery says 4% charge.  This is the first time ever i've bought an apple laptop since 2004 that wouldn't start.  I can understand the laptop not being fully charged, but 4%?  That, to me, is a bit odd and low.
Has anyone else had that experience?  Is this normal?  It's now charging and says about 3 hours until full charge.  I'm a bit worried though b/c it is indeed very warm (the laptop surface by the esc key and power adapter, as well as magsafe2 adapter (i'm using the charger of apple 27" display).  I'm a little worried that I've got a bad battery.
One of the previous 5 rMBPs had a bad battery while the other rMBPs had amazing battery (8+ hrs of safari, itunes, ical, wifi, etc).
I did read the higher spec rMBP runs a bit warmer b/c of the dedicated graphics.
has anyone else had this issue?  should i be worried?
it's a LG display but so far no image retention and no yellowing which is good

Thanks for the reply.  Yes i use the charger from the apple display i have at my desk since it i have to plug in the displayport and usb cables (the monitor uses 1 cable w/ 3 separate connections: usb, mini displayport, and power).
just let it charge overnight and checked the battery status.  if i do nothing but turn on wifi, i get 7.5 hours it says of battery life.  that seems very low to me.  it's not even apple's 8 hour advertised life.
on the previous retina MBPs (base model), i was getting 10hours battery life, and that's using safari, wifi, and itunes.
i got this model b/c i wanted the 512gb hard drive.  seeing how battery life is poorer than the base models, i may just return and custom build the base model w/ 512gb

I just got a new iPhone 4S and tried to restore but it didn't finished downloading all the apps, tried to reset and restore again, but it wouldn't start over. What can I do?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.

  • Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Acrobat 8 Professional crashes 10 seconds after you start the application. I have adobe acrobat 8.1 running on a dell vostro 1400 vista.

I'm having this issue with Acrobat 9, in which it launches and runs long enough to page down two times and then stops responding for about 30 seconds.

It looks like you have a corrupt preferences file. If you're curious, you may check the integrity of that file issuing the following command in Terminal:
plutil ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plistWhat does it say? Now, try this:
    1. Quit Mail / Make sure Mail is not running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the HOME/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Preferences/. Locate the file com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after fixing the problem).
You'll have to set up your accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. The first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable "Display remote images in HTML messages" if it's enabled.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    Hi SharpBud,
The date for all day event stored in SQL in GMT time, the start time for an all day event returns the start time in GMT time, which is not the current time most likely.
This is a confirmed issue, as a workaround, I would suggest you to use a calculate column for the event for the column, using the following format:
    IF(TEXT(([End Time]-[Start Time])-TRUNC(([End Time]-[Start Time]),0),"0.000000000")="0.999305556",IF([Start Time]=ROUND([Start Time],0),[Start Time],DATE(YEAR([Start Time]),MONTH([Start
    Time]),DAY([Start Time])+1)),[Start Time])
    Thanks,

  • Satellite L650 wouldn't start up periodically

I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite L650 laptop with Win7.
Worked for a few days and then periodically wouldn't start up.
Can you assist? I Only installed anti-virus application.

    Hi
I would recommend performing HDD recovery procedure which helps you to set the notebook back to factory settings.
Then you should test the notebook once again in my opinion this should be done at first because its really difficult to say if the issue is hardware or software related so recovery would help to get more info
