Odd DVD player issues

Most of the time, my DVD player works without a glitch. But for some reason, on certain DVDs (eg anything Doctor Who- Other BBC discs are fine, though), it plays the introductory messages/any trailers, but where it would normally go to the menu screen, it just stops. As though there's no DVD at all. If I keep hitting play, it complains about an 'Unexpected Error' and quits.
That's all the information I can give, and I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm no tech-genius.
Any input would be muchly appreciated

I think it may be the disks themselves, maybe the format? if they work on a normal dvd player, try them on a normal pc, then try on your mac again, it if works on your dvd player and pc then it may be your cd/dvd drive. chuck in your install disk and run a diagnostic on your mac (if the install disk glitches then you know it's not the disks.)
Also, it could be your graphics/video card stuffing around, but the diagnostic should pick it up. Run a software update and see if it has anything knew like drivers and stuff.
Hope this helps, this is all I can think of that could be wrong.

  • Third party DVD player issues

Recently, I have come across an issue playing back DVD's with
VLC or XBMC. When I start playback of the DVD, it plays the first
segment ( the studio leader at the beginning) and will then just quit.
Apple's DVD Player works fine (quality is crappy and can't get surround
tracks out of it). Yet, when the DVD is ripped to the hard drive and
played from there, it is works just fine.
Also, this happens when the DVD is played back from an internal
    or external drive.
Has anyone else seen this issue or do I have a unique problem?

My unit is a 2010 MacMini with HDMI. (see list)
The quality issues with Apple DVD player vs. other solutions are certain
scenes have a graininess akin to noise on old analog tv's that aren't
present on the other players and severe banding in gradients that
do not appear in other players, at least when they were working.
As far as the audio, selection in the DVD's menu itself just makes no difference.
Tried all the combinations of messing with Audio MIDI setup, third party
plugins like Perian, none of which work for Apple's DVD player. This was
the other reason for going to third party players, the higher quality video
    was just a bonus.
Your point has been taken that it may be a software issue with the third party players.
Some update at some point may have broken them, be it OSX or their own.
I've beaten the Apple DVD player issue enough, let's just consider the topic dead.
The audio issues with it are spread over many, many threads across the web, with
no silver bullet solution to all.
As for BluRays, play them back all the time on my Mini. Either with
    PowerDVD 10 in a Bootcamp windows7 when I want full DTS-HD or
TRUE HD decoding (decodes these to up to 24 bit,192kHz 7.1 since the
Mini chipset does not have the "protected" path for pass through of
these technologies) or a MakeMKV/XBMC combo in OSX. The OSX
solution doesn't give you the fancy menus and all or HD audio if present,
but if I only want to watch the movies it's fine. If I ever do want the other
nonsense, I just use PowerDVD 10. And please note this is BluRay disk
in player, not "ripped" or transcoded.
I do appreciate your help, but was primarily curious if others had issue
    as well.

  • Encore DVD Writing Cancels won't play on DVD player issue

So I have a very confusing issue with encore.
When I press build everything works fine. Then writing begins. The moment the writing reaches the end of the progress bar (the exact moment)  the progress bar goes to empty and the bottom bar says canceling and ejects the DVD. Usually (not every time) a pop up menu saying "end of file" appears next. When I press ok for end of file message the pop up disappears and suddenly the DVD progress bar is filled and the DVD says completed (as if nothing just happened). So I'm confused whether it worked or not!
I reinsert the DVD that just ejected into my Mac and it works! Then I put it into a DVD player and it won't play, it won't play on my old Xbox 360 either, but it WILL play in a Bluray player?!
Everytime I rewrite the files I get different results. They all work on my Mac and blu ray but only 1 of 4 works in the Xbox. The one that does work in the Xbox will read in the DVD player but plays choppy and  skips  around as if the DVD is scratched or damaged?
! Other differences involve the write speed, sometimes the options are 8x or 4x. Other times its 3x,2x, and 1x. When the latter write speed options occur I cannot press "test before writing" it's greyed out. When 8x and 4x are the speed options I can check it.  I used different DVDs and it didn't help.
I work for a company that needs to copy the DVDs but they can't be copied. Don't know why?
    Here are my settings

I really need help with this weird issue quickly thanks.

Just an Update, I've tried many things to no avail still have a few others to try. Being a Large file it takes a while to try things.
I went ahead and got Toast, but considering that the Image Iso and the DVD Folder both gave me the End of File Error and the Disc "Failed Completed" Error I figured it a no go and it was. It did however give me something that Opened everywhere (Mac,Xbox,Dvd) , but it did not play on the Dvd correctly.
I've done numerous things in the Mac permissions end Like trying as a different user and running as the Root User, but it was also unsuccessful.
I've Re- Exported the file many different ways, but finally had a breakthrough using a version of M2v.  It's definitely an error with Finalizing. My disc previously began to mess up and give "END of File" after it finished writing, it never even made it to the "Writing Lead Out" stage. I beleive this is why it plays it certain places fine, but probably not as well in systems (like Dvd players) that require those last few steps like writing Lead Out.
The only issue I have now is that when I put it into the DVD player it say "No title"!?!? AY CARAMBA!!!
Now I'm working on trying to figure this NEW problem! I have all my menus and links in place, but no go. I think it may be related to the previous problem in that something beneath the surface is wrong with my computer. Being a used Mac with a restored Hard Drive there are probably endless possibilities, but I hesitate to think that way because it may also have absolutely nothing to do with it.
So any help is greatly appreciated
whether it be a specific issue you know of dealing with used Macs and issue similar to mine
or just on the "NO Title" error as a separate issue. I'm hoping this "No Title" is something simple and unrelated,  I've already burned through about 13 discs and even more pain pills for the headaches!!

  • DVD Player Issues- Possible Hardware/Driver malfunction...

    Hi folks:
I've had my eMac for about three years and have been happily running 10.2.8 for the past two.
Just tonight I had a new issue when I tried to play a DVD; I put the disk in the tray, heard the disc spinning in the drive once it had closed, and then... nothing. No DVD Player launch, no Disc appearing on the desktop. In fact, so much nothing that the Eject button on my keyboard failed to cause the drive to open, as did the Eject command in the Finder and in the DVD Player (which I opened manually).
The only thing that got the disc out was to open iTunes, which I had been using to load CDs earlier this afternoon, and to use the Eject command from within the program. This happened with two clean rental DVDs one after the other. I restarted the computer in between, and have tried inserting Audio CDs, with the same effect each time.
Most troubling is that the last few times I have ejected the discs from inside iTunes I have received a window telling me that my Home drive requires me to enter a pass phrase to execute the command.
I am completely lost. Any ideas?
    Gracias,
    Jason

    hi jason--
i would do a couple of things here. first of all i would go to disk utility in utilities, select the macintosh hd, and then click on repair disk permissions. then boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f during startup until you get a screen that says "to continue booting". then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. by the way, if a disk is stuck it can often be ejected by restarting and holding down the mouse or the eject key on the keyboard during the boot. if that fails, do the open firmware boot described above, except type in these commands--
    eject cd (hit return)
    mac-boot (hit return)
let me know if this makes any difference. [ 8 ) ]

  • Anybody have DVD Player issues after 10.7.3 upgrade?

    Aloha everyone,
I upgraded both my iMac and MacBook Pro to 10.7.3 (I used the combo updater) like any dutiful Apple customer, as I've never had an issue with an upgrade (I made the switch in 2006, so I don't have that much history here).  I didn't notice this at first, but I have several DVD rips whose icons now appear to be a generic file icon.  Furthermore, when I double-click on them, instead of DVD Player opening both the control window and the viewer window, only the control window opens.  When I press the play button on the control window, I get the system error beep.  I can not play the DVD file even when I then choose File ... Open from DVD Player's menu.  I can use VLC to play the DVDs, but I would rather use DVD Player (just my preference).
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue since upgrading to 10.7.3.  This is pretty annoying, especially considering that DVD Player is an Apple app.  Oh, and I use Ripit for my DVD rips.  After purchasing a DVD, I would rather just rip it and play the rip than take a chance on damaging the original DVD.
Thanks in advance for any and all responses

FCS 3 is working as usual for me, although FCP did re-profile the RT Extreme settings and took a couple of seconds longer to start up the first time after updating. What else have you installed or updated?
I was also on the 10.7.3 beta. It did not change anything in the behaviour of FCS 3 there either.

  • Odd dvd burning issue

10.4.11 and using simply burns to burn dvds is doing odd things. i have a
dvd i want to make a bunch of copies of. i have the video and audio ts folders
stored in a common folder. i drag them to simply burns, name the dvd, save
this as a project and burn it. everything works fine. the dvd auto starts in
my standalone dvd player, mac, and pc. when i burn the second copy, it also
is fine in the dvd and pc, but none of the macs i've tried it on will recognize
the disc. placing it in the mac does bring up the dvd player but it doesn't
start automatically. pressing the play button brings up a message that there is
an unsupported disc in the player. however, by opening the file menu--->open
dvd media--->selecting the dvd--->choose, the dvd plays fine with the minor
exception of not going to full screen mode.
this has happened with an older version of simply burns as well as the latest
    release.
i tried burning the folders directly from dvdstudiopro and that worked perfectly
except i have to re-enter the dvd name and re-navigate to the dvd folders for
    each dvd i burn.
any ideas on why this could be happening?
    thanks,
    BabaG

yeah. not the best solution as, since i store the video_ts and audio_ts
folders on my system, it pretty much doubles the storage needed for all
of the dvd's. it also takes a lot of extra time as i have to burn a good
dvd, then rip to image for every dvd i have stored.
would be much better to be able to solve what's changing between the first
and second burns. that said, i definitely appreciate getting a tip to a
    viable workaround.
    thanks again,

  • Another dvd player issue - error 70017

I accidentally posted this in the pre-2009 forum - so I am posting here to correct -sorry for the duplicate post.
    Mac Mini early 2009 - 2.0ghz, 3gb ram, 10.6.2.
I am having a regular problem with the dvd player; I usually get the message "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. Error 70017" when I start the program.
The DVD drive works wonderfully for reading, burning, etc. If I restart the computer the dvd player usually works for watching movies...if I use Toast, disk utility, or any other dvd related program, the player will now work again. I have tried the pacifist method to reinstall and have deleted every dvd player file I can find.... The same happens when I reset pram. Repairing the drive/repairing permissions is not effective either - sometimes it works for a little while, but the issue always returns.
Any advice? Doesn't seem to be hardware because it works for other programs, but I'd be glad to test that as well.
What's going on here? This is frustrating...I can use any number of other programs to watch movies, but it sure is nice to be able to use dvd player to see which title is playing, etc...plus I just want it to work - after all, isn't that the hook?
    Thanks for any advice!

Two things, have you run the Hardware Test on your Install DVD? Have you tried resetting the Systems Management Controller?

  • Display issue or DVD player issue?

    I have a project which is aspected 16 x 9.
When it plays on one DVD player it forces it to 4 x 3 and displays it as letterbox and nothing is squashed or stretched. No problem.
    On another DVD player (playing on a 4 x 3 monitor) it plays the 16 x 9 DVD as a stretched out 4 x 3.
Is this likely a DVD player setting? My client is freaking out and wants answers. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have all your settings right (16:9 letterbox) then that is all you can do. DVD players can be set to override your settings and force the video to be 4:3, and there isn't a thing (as the DVD programmer) you can do about it.

  • DVD Player Issues

I am having trouble playing DVD's, when I pop in the disc and the film begins you can see maybe 30 or 40 blue pixels or artifacts. However when playing a video I made or an internet video no problems. I have yet to try to copy the DVD to the HDD and play from there or maybe with VLC. Has anyone else had these problems? I just got this MacBook maybe 4 days ago, just tried the dvd player.

Hello there. Where do you see the pixels, ie. are they always in the same place, or do they change places? Also, does this happen with every DVD you try to play or just a particular one?
Also, how much RAM is in your machine?
Artificacting can be caused by a couple of things... it could be a slow machine, resulting in frames dropped. It could be a machine with insufficient RAM and too many other applications running concurrently, again resulting in dropped frames that show as artifacts during the decompression and playback.
It could be a dirty or damaged DVD. It could be dirt on the read head of the drive as well. Or it could be a defective drive.

  • Powerware 5110 and DVD Player issues.

I have a Powerware 5110 700VA UPS. I bought this because my area has lots of blackouts and so on.
I have found that I cannot burn a CD from iTunes if my iMac is plugged into the UPS. It spins, starts to burn, does nothing and then ejects the CD with an error saying something or other.
When I plug my iMac into the normal wall socket, it runs fine. It seems that the UPS is not providing enough power or maybe an increase in power for my Mac.
I also have not been able to install the LanManagement package for Unix (Mac) due to some questions. It might relate to this. My question is more of the power one though.
    Any ideas.

Both. Power and USB as it is supposed to be the controller. But that's my other question. I'm hoping the installation problem may solve this. At least I'd be able to tell what is happeing powerwise.

  • HP G71 Notebook pc, DVD player stopped on only one DVD

I was previewing a 60 min. DVD (made 2007) to watch in full later. DVD playing well.   I wanted to skip ahead.  I either paused or stopped the video,  Went to DVD Menu and chose either "main menu" or "root title menu".  No chapters titles or any other info appeared.  Screen went gray.  Tried to just resume play; DVD would not.  Tried to start beginning again; would not do so.   Ejected and reinserted DVD; no change.  Inserted an altogether different video to see if it was the DVD or the DVD player issue, and the different DVD worked fine.  It's almost as if I've erased or damaged somehow the DVD that I had been watching successfully up until I tried to skip ahead.  I have often been able to preview DVD's via the main menu or root menu feature without a problem.  Computer is working fine, and DVD player in computer works fine except on the one DVD, on which nothing now appears.  Is there a simple fix for this?  Did I damage the DVD?  Thanks.

Hello @SU-ZQ, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you were having an issue with 1 dvd not playing correctly. I will try to assist you with this.
    A few questions to start:
What's the operating system in the notebook?
What program do you use to watch DVD's with?
As you've tested and it works with another dvd, it is odd that the one just stopped. Unless you were in the subfolders of the dvd though you shouldn't have been able to delete the content, though accidents can happen.
I would test that specific dvd in another source (dvd player, ps3 etc.) to see if it still works at all. If it does, then try another player (VLC, Windows Media, etc.) something that you weren't using, there could be a conflict with that player.
The only thoughts I have to it just not playing, would be some sort of corruption, a codex issue, or accidental deletion of files.
Also, test with more then one to make sure everything else is working correctly (though I'm sure you have already).
Let me know how everything goes.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
I worked on behalf of HP.

  • DVD Player quality

I noticed that there's fair amount of jaggies on the default DVD Player.
Is there a better DVD Player than the one that comes with OSX? There doesn't seem to be too many options/features one can set on the DVD Player.

    Hi, macmeup. Welcome back.
Your MacBook does not have a dedicated graphics card with its own VRAM (Video RAM). In the MacBook and Intel-based Mac Mini, the graphics processor (Intel's GMA 950) is built into the chipset on the logic board. This helps keep the computer's price low, but compromises video performance in areas such as 3D gaming and may affect DVD playback, particularly if you are simultaneously running a number of other, resource-intensive apps.
You've not stated how much RAM is installed in your MacBook, but its video performance may be improved by installing the maximum amount of RAM allowed by the specs and by running fewer apps concurrently with DVD Player.
You may want to search or post to the MacBook Dicussion to see if others are experiencing similar DVD Player issues.
PS: As a tip for future question posts, please fill in your Discussions settings with complete information about your Mac (specific model, RAM, hard drive size, Mac OS X version, etc.). Click "My Settings" in the "Welcome yourscreenname" box in the upper-right corner of this page, then add those details to the "Computer" field therein. Use the "Other Computer Information" field if additional space is required.
    Good luck!

  • Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?

First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.
Thanks Apple. I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.
Thanks and sorry for the rant, but I'm justifiably frustrated.

Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.
