Odd Expresscard SSD Issue dv8t-1200 cto

I've got a very odd problem occuring with a wintec filemate ssd expresscard /34 in my dv8t.  I suspect it is a bios configuration issue, but since I'm not versed enough in hardware, apparently, HP has decided to cripple my access to my hardware.
So here's the issue.  If I plug the expresscard SSD in before I boot, it is not recognized as the appropriate device, only "SATA Controler" and does not mount the volume.  If, however, I turn the computer on and plug in the device while at the "HP" splashscreen, it is immediatly detected as "Wintec Fiilemate SSD" and the volume mounts when windows boots.  Notice I said  "while at the splashscreen" I litterally mean RIGHT after I see the "HP" logo.  This should take out any OS factor in this equation.
What do I have to do to make my HP initialize the PCIe bus correctly on boot?  Will there be a bios update to let me do this? Yes, I tried the ONLY option that may even slightly pertain to this, "Powersave card reader"  to false and true. Same result.

1)  Already tried F.25 hp provided bios.  Does not fix the issue.  I also obtained a modified F.25 bios that unlocks half the options of the bios through advanced menu, but disk management does not work, and chaning the setup app in an Insyde bios is proving ridiculous.  If you could tell me what hex address the advance and disk and power tabs are located, that might facilitate my modifying of the bios to give me all the info I need.
2)  Linux isn't listed, but hey linux seems to work fine  with this EXPRESSCARD drive.  Must be the hardware initialization by the kernel does it.  I guess if the bios allowed me to allocate my resources correctly, I could make windows work, but hey a configurable system, apparently, HPs are not.
3)  As stated above, this is NOT a SATA SSD.  (Well not plugged diectly into the SATA)  It is an expresscard/34 interface eSATA card.  It may however be the manufacturer's firmware, but they are also looking into it.
It really seems like the bios only initializes this slot AFTER the computer posts and it detects something was inserted.   Not, as it should, check and see if something is there then initialize the device.  To get around this issue I turn on the computer and then plug the SSD in.  When I've symbollically linked the system startup files to load post driver initialization on the SSD, do you know how annoying it is when I forget to do this?
Which brings me to another point.  I wouldn't be complaining about the SSD not being recognized when turned on if I COULD JUST BOOT from it.  But since I cannot do that, once again a bios limitation, I chose to hack boot to this drive.  All this should be perfectly doable with the hardware.  In fact it is so long as I don't forget to unplug the SSD, wait for HP splash screen, and then plug it in before the OS boots.  Quite frustrating.
Sorry, didnt really mean to rant at you.  Just frustrated.  I know you were trying to help, and I thank you for that.

I have an HP Pavilion dv8t-1100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC laptop. It seems as though the Wi-Fi is going out. After a while I the Wi-Fi connectivity stops functioning and I have to plug in an EitherNet cable to continue on-line. So how do I find out what the part number of the machine is, and where do I order a new one? Thanks.

    Hi @MikeatHPformum
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
In answer to your questions about the WLAN adapter and how to order a replacement, take a look at the attached serivce manual for the notebook family. HP Pavilion dv8 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

  • Pavilion dv8t 1200 - simple pass/digital persona software won't install

    Howdy,
Windows 7 Home Premimum 64 bit
    Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz
    Pavilion dv8t - 1200 Notebook PC
The reader worked fine for the first few months/year, however it then only started working for signing in & occasionaly for sites & gTalk. I was cool with that...annoyed, but cool. Oh, it also didn't work to sign in if I had to sign in again after the screen saver came up or if the machine went into hybernate.
Today I decided to see if there was an update or if I could get it working for something other than signing in. After installing what was most likely the wrong package, I uninstalled it through the Program  Manager.
I then shut down the machine, ran CCleaner (there were digital persona errors removed...about 8) & went to install sp50048 which I believe is the correct one for my machine.
During the install it tells me the folder/files already exist, (even though I uninstalled it) & ithey do, then at the instal phase "Registering Modules" I receive the following error:
    Error 1722
    InstallDPPassFilter_x64.4D0EAAF1_2D33_4FFF_AA08_6...
And then in rolls it back.
I turned off the biometric devices in the control panel, ran CCleaner again, shut the machine down completely, tried installing again & had the same issue.
I turned the biometrics on in the control panel & recieve this message:
"Biometric devices are turned on, however I'm told “Windows did not find any biometric devices on this computer. You might need to attach your device or install device drivers.”
I have tried a few methods from 'solved' under both simple pass & digital persona
Thank you all for reading & attempting to help.

    Howdy,
Thank you for your advice, however it did not work out.
    Addressing each point in succession:
I can not get Digital Persona to install, therefore I can not interact with it hence none of the steps in the Setup and Use HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader were available to moi.
Troubleshoot a Fingerprint Reader did not solve the issue, however I did go through the steps there so I shall describe my results in an effort to see if it helps home in on the problem.
All files used to update were pulled from the hp.com site using my Product Number.
Update the BIOS - BIOS was up to date
Enable Biometric Support (in BIOS) - Following the instructions it appears mine is always in the state: Enable
Check for Windows Support - Validity Sensor appears under Biometric Devices in the Device Manager
Update the Device Driver - (Had deleted the driver previously, so installed & updated) - Updated/Installed
Update the Access Manager - Attempted to install Digital Persona 5.1.0.175 A, but again during the install it gave me the same error (as my original post describes) & did not install.
As a final note, Windows does not see the reader in the Control Panel (large icons) Biometric devices even though it is turned on.
The reader worked fine before I tried to update it to a newer version & I still believe I installed an incorrect version of the Simple Pass software.

  • Where is the USB 3.0 port on the HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO ?

Does the HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO Premium Notebook PC have any USB 3.0 ports?

No it does not. It predates USB 3.0 by quite a bit. You can add usb 3.0 ports with the expresscard slot and an add-in card.

  • My MBP won't boot from my Expresscard SSD after I took it out during sleep!

Before this happened I booted my Macbook Pro from an Expresscard SSD. Oddly enough you can take it out while the computer is sleeping. This time though I took it out and inserted it in another computer to transfer files. I put it back in and woke the computer, and I started getting weird messages (ex. Evernote didn't work because it couldn't read its database,) and other things. Now it simply hangs on the Apple logo during startup.
Does anyone that knows what exactly happens to a drive during sleep, and while being read by another computer? What I can do to avoid reinstalling OSX on the drive?

+Oddly enough you can take it out while the computer is sleeping.+
What makes you think that? From your description, it's obvious that you corrupted the contents of the drive. You can try "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility, but most likely you'll have to reinstall. I wouldn't trust any of the data on it now.

  • Dv8t-1200

I have a dv8t-1200 laptop that has issues with printer drivers and has been running slow.  I would like to scan the hardware and see if there are any issues there before I totally wipe it.  I would also need windows 7 restore disc to reinstall the operating system.

For testing hardware failure this might help:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01443317
Do a extensive hard drive, memory test & others.
For restoring factory settings, you can use the HP recovery manager & do recovery:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01867418
If the recovery partition has been already formatted off to may use recovery discs if you've created one before, or order them by contacting HP in your region.

  • ExpressCard SSD not detected by Windows 7

I've got Windows 7 RC 64-bit installed on a 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro (dual boot using Boot Camp) with an ExpressCard slot. I also got a FileMate SolidGO 3FMS4D48M-WR 48GB ExpressCard SSD; the drive works beautifully under OS X, but is not recognized at all by Windows 7 when it's in the ExpressCard slot. In Device Manager, the yellow caution icon appears in front of the Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. The drive does not show under Disk drives or in Disk Manager. The corresponding Device Status message is: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."
The drive is recognized as SATA under Mac OS X and also works fine in Windows when plugged into a USB port instead of the ExpressCard slot (at which point it is not treated as SATA, but USB). I've tried the latest Boot Camp drivers, but that has no effect. Any suggestions?

    Hi
If the device is not visible in device manager, not even as an unknown device, then this means that the device does not exist or has not been detected by BIOS.
Usually the infrared receiver should be visible in device manager under:
Human interface devices - > SMSCIR infrared receiver
In System devices you should see the Consumer IR Device.
Be sure that you enabled the option sow hidden devices in device manager maybe then you could see this
    Please also check the BIOS
Im not quite sure if the infrared device option would be listed in BIOS but you should check it

    Hi,
The driver for the CD/DVD drive is supplied by the Windows operating system.  If you having problems with the drive, try the following.
Run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it isn't, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.
    Regards,

  • Almost got WinXP booting from Expresscard SSD

Here is a story of how I almost got this to work. Seeing if the user community has any advice/suggestions. Here we go:
    1) Bought a 48GB Express34 SSD card hoping to install and boot XP on it. The expresscard34 is on the Serial-SATA bus so had my fingers crossed.
    2) In OSX ran the BCA, partitioned 48GB, and installed WinXP on the my internal HD: Success
    3) Booted into WinXP, updated to SP3/etc, restart: Success
    4) In OSX I used WinClone to Clone my bootcamp partition: Success
    5) In OSX inserted my expresscard SSD and formatted it using to the GUID Partition Table: Success
    6) In OSX I used WinClone to restore the bootcamp partition to the SSD: Success
    7) Deleted the bootcamp partition on my internal HD. Now I have OSX->HDD and WinXP->SSD: Success
    8) Shut down computer. Make sure SSD is inserted. Turn computer on while holding the option key. Boot Camp sees MacintoshHD and BootcampSSD!: Success
    9) Choose BootcampSSD...wait for it..."No bootable device found - please insert disk and hit any key": FAIL :/
Side note: I tried this again, but skipped step 7. It worked. I was able to boot from either MacintoshHD, BootCampPartitionHDD, or BootCampSSD, but that defeats the purpose...
I suppose this has to do with the fact that WinXP not only likes to be the only OS on a HD, but also perhaps the driver between the expresscard34 and SATA bus is not available on bootup. Its a shame because BC sees the SSD as bootable, but WinXP chokes. Of course it is a 10 yr old OS so its almost to be expected.
Perhaps this would be possible using Win7?

Thanks for replying. I gave changing the bootconfiguration an other try. although I had done it already. Results: If I use only "legacy" the bios passes both my ssd-drive and my hdd-drive and goes to network-boot (without result of course). If I choose Efi first, and put the windowsbootmanager on SSD on top, he skips it an goes to bootmanager on the HDD.The question still is: How to adapt the windows bootmanager on the ssd to make that it boots the windowspartition on the SSD ??

  • Booting of ExpressCard SSD

I saw a deal online for a 4GB SSD ExpressCard for under $10 shipped. I was wondering if it was possible to boot of the SSD? I would like to put linux or some other OS on the ExpressCard and be able to keep it in my laptop case to boot off once in a while. Other than that, I can't think of any justification to buy the SSD.

No. ExpressCard SSDs require drivers that must be loaded by the OS before the SSD can be accessed. Catch22 - no OS, no driver, no ExcpressCard SSD access, can't boot from it.

  • Expresscard SSD

I have an expresscard SSD that I've been using to speed up mac osx and apps that I use intensively like photoshop, InDesign, and formZ. I have the ssd setup as my boot drive; however, when I don't use the apps mentioned, I boot from my hdd (to give the ssd a break). I'm tired of switching between the two drives, the 48 gb ssd is faster than the hdd, but it can only hold so much;I try to save most documents on the hdd, but if I'm frequently working on a project on the ssd, I save the document on the ssd's desktop. Is there a way that I could boot from my hdd, and when I need speed, I could switch to another desktop linked to the ssd, using mission control in lion osx? This would be extremely convienient.

I agree with itpastorn. No one here was talking about obligations. If that's the case none of us here are obligated here to help others. We're here to help others with what we know. And get help if we need.

  • ExpressCard SSD options to boot a Powerbook (Leopard)

    Hi all,
Not sure if this is the correct forum/category for this but...
Anyone know of any particular type and/or brand of ExpressCard SSD from which it is possible to boot a G4 PowerBook running Leopard?
I have a very individual and specific reason for doing this and just hope that it's possible!
Looking to learn from others' experiences before I blow the cash only to find out that I've bought the wrong item or, worst still, it can't be done.
    Thanks!

Snow Leopard comes in discs only.  The USB drive may be a counterfeit and/or corrupt.  There are two options for you:
Get replacement original OSX installation disks from Apple customer service.  Have your MBP serial number ready and there is a charge.
Or two, purchase a Snow Leopard disk from the Apple online store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Ciao.

  • Expresscard ssd won't work

How do I get an expresscard ssd (Filemate 96GB) to work on a 17in MBP using Bootcamp, booting Win7 ultimate.  It works fine when booted as OSX.

Not true. If the cable has a short it would work intermittently. There is a long thread about the Seagate XT series drives in 2009 MBPs where that drive does not function properly but other standard drives do. It was found out that changing the cable to an updated model solved everyones problems with that series drive and real SSDs.
If the drive works fine outside the system, connected to USB, and doesn't work when installed inside the system what else could it be. There is only the drive the cable and the port (and of course the chipset/SATA controller).
    LeeMadd wrote:
surely if the cable was at fault, no hard drive would work at all? and the ssd doesnt work in either the standard hard drive bay or the optical bay with an adapter. both use different cables
