Odd folders in User Preferences.

I'm running Leopard on my iMac and I've noticed that things have been slowing down lately. My primary HD is nearing capacity but I think this is a separate issue.
I was looking in my user preferrences folder in the library, and found a bunch of empty folders with very odd names. I deleted them but more keep appearing. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Here are some examples:

I can't find a reference to it at the moment, but I believe that I've seen such things blamed on Adobe software. Try running each of your Adobe applications, then look to see if new such folders have been created. If it is Adobe software that's creating those folders, I doubt there's much you can do about it.

I found several folders in user preferences with names such as:

They all showed nothing in them so I deleted them all, but they have come back again. Is this normal?

Tried your suggestion and found Photoshop Elements 4.0 created this file in user preferences:

...and opening Photoshop CS2 created this one:

The applications seem to work OK and I have other Adobe applications as well, but did not open these as well.
Any suggestions on what to do next?

User preference folder names

I see a lot of folders in my user preferences folder with really odd names like "ÙÕ" that are empty. Is this from a virus, corrupt application or what?

Changing Default user Preferences in Workspace

I am using HFM 9.3.1. Each time I set up a new user I have to get them to log in, and go through the following routine..
Go to File>Preferences. Then Select Financial Reporting on the left side of the preferences window. Under the Preview heading on the screen are two radio buttons for On and Off. Select On and click OK.
Does anyone know how to change the default setting on this Preference to On?

Assigning Reporting and Analysis Default Preferences
User Management Console enables users with Provisioning Manager and Explorer roles to set
the default folder, new document folder, and start page application preferences for users and
groups. Individual and group preferences have precedence over default preferences.
For default preferences to succeed, users and groups must have the roles and permissions
necessary to access specified folders and interface elements.
Provisioning Manager is a Shared Services role that enables you to provisions users and groups
to applications. It is also required for setting default user preferences for Reporting and Analysis.
For more information, see the Hyperion Security Guide.
➤ To assign default preferences for Reporting and Analysis:
1 Select Navigate > Administer > User Management.
2 Log on to User Management Console with a user name provisioned with Provisioning Manager and Explorer

Some user preferences lost

My brand-new Mac Mini was fine last night as of midnight. Sometime today, many but not all of my user preferences/software registration settings were lost. Eudora will not open, with an error message in the console log, Couldn't reopen address book databsse. Home directory may not be ready or is missing.
The home directory is still therre, as are all my files; in the directory I reach using cd ~. I did not rename my home directory. Obviously relevant, I can only see 3 accounts (including my usual account) in the log-in window. The folders are in the users directory on the hard drive, and they look normal in every way I can tell. NetInfo manager shows the accounts there, however.

I have VMware Fusion on the machine, and there are error messages that it could not enter super-mode.
Looking at the permissions on my home folder, the owner is show as "unknown". Since (thank God) I was using an administrator account, I changed the owner to myself.
But what on aerth might have happened? Where could the other two accounts have gone? I'd be most grateful for a pointer in the right direction!

I did repair permission, but I gather that that only fixes permissions for installed items, not user folders. At any rate, it didn't help. I checked the disk with Disk Utility, and Disk Warrior 4 ( which found the usual minor issues, not nothing useful).
Having retaken control of my home folder, now I'm concerned with what happened. There was nothing I could find in the logs to indicate what happened. I had the mini connected to the monitor through an Iogear DVI KVM, and when the computer woke up, it had to redetect the display. I would hope that couldn't cause permissions for the home folder to be lost; but I've connected the mini directly to the monitor for now.

User preferences on multiple computers

Mac OSX users: has anyone tried saving and migrating their user preferences for use on another Mac? For instance, let's say I set up my desktop at home to look and function a certain way. Can I easily transfer these same settings to a work computer, assuming the OS is the same? I sometimes work onsite for various companies having consistent prefs would help me be more efficient.

finding folders by size is pretty easy, modification date is a bit harder.
Here is a script that will list all user folders over 300mb.
I will leave it to you to test and modify to delete those folders.

Failed to Get User Preferences

I have 3 scripts online right now for ongoing projects that I'm trying to work on only Adobe Story just updated and now won't log me in. I keep getting the "Failed to get user preferences" error. I need to update a script tonight for a client, then prep one for a recording session tomorrow. Can I get this resolved a.s.a.p. please! My ID is [email protected]

Hi,
Can you please check the 'deleted' and 'sync issues' folder that shows up in the bottom left of the Story screen. Just click on these folders to see the list of documents. If your file is present in any of them, you can directly recover.
From deleted folder you can just click on the document's options (a triangle shows up when you hover on the document) and click on the triangle and then restore to a project.
If its in sync issues folder, you can delete the document (deletion will just move the document to the deleted folder mentioned above) and then go to deleted folder to restore the document.

Can't change user preferences when Acting As a user

I've configured the 'Act As' functionality so as an administrator (Proxy User) I can log in as another user. However when I attempt to change any of target user's preferences I get the following message :-
"Exception occurred when saving user preferences to the catalog access denied for user to path /users/[email protected]/_prefs/userprefsxmlstore"
Proxy Level is set at full for all users.
I've tried changing the permissions on the users folders via the Catalog manager but doesn't seem to make any difference.
Any help would be great!

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work. As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to. I am looking at an issue with users not getting specific group policies.
After searching a number of client computers I found that the following error

I can find the folder in the Sysvol folder on all of the domain controllers.
The issue with end users seems to be that the proxy settings for internet explorer is not being applied.

Hi all
In administering this policy I am a little confused.
We have a policy that distributes proxy settings in the internet explorer maintenance settings section - however when opening this policy up in GPO editor the internet explorer maintenance section is not present.
I plan to apply the settings via User/preferences/control panel settings/ internet settings (or registry settings from article) however I am unable to edit the settings for internet explorer maintenance and these will persist. Ideas????

This is not one flag in the registry. Rather, turning this preference off and on does a whole series of complicated and undocumented COM calls and who knows what. You cannot just set this in the registry. But I believe you can set it during enterprise deployment.

Setting User Preferences With Javascript In Acrobat X

Hi All,
Is there a way thru Javascript to programatically set a value in the User Preferences?
I am trying to create a batch sequence that exports PDFs to HTMLs. In the Acrobat X preferences, there is a conversion option that sets the option of "Run OCR If Needed" to true or false.
Edit --> Preferences --> Convert From PDF --> HTML --> Run OCR if needed (True|False)
Depending on conditions, I need to programtically set the value of this preference during the batch sequence before I export the document to HTML. Is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

There are very few user preferences that can be controlled with JavaScript, and this isn't one of them.

Actual date hours PROBLEM - Displaying or not "Show time" in "User preferences"

This is my current issue. I have a 5 days calendar with hours 7AM -> 8PM.
AM ->When I check "show time" in "user preferences", I show the good hours in ES and EF. When I apply AS and AF, AUTOMATICALY the good default hours are applied if i change the date (7AM -> 8PM)...
But, if i check, "do not show time" in "user preferences" and then i apply AS and/or AF changing date, PRIMAVERA apply automaticaly 00:00 in the hour ans "forget" the hours of the calendar...
It represent a big big problem for me, first of all in the gantt representation.
Any idea to fix this issue ?

I think you need to do setting in grantt chart view setting..as Day,Week,Month in stead of user preference as " do not show time".

UCM 9.1 7975 Sets can't restrict user preferences

We have CallManger 9.1 installed and just noticed that we can't restrict the settings on the 7975 sets to only User Preferences - all 7 options are showing
Is there a patch with the 9.1 for the 7975 sets?

Mac OS X now uses the clang compiler, and it is possible the package has not been ported to work with the pickier clang compiler.
If your system has gcc, you could maybe try hacking the Makefile to use gcc instead of cc (or maybe export CC=gcc, again assuming you have an older copy of gcc on your system). You might also try specifying some CFLAGS to disable some compiler checks. It is possible you will need to modify the sources to fix obnoxious coding violations that both clang and gcc will not ignore.
Or you might check if one of the Mac OS X package managers have already ported the package: http://MacPorts.org, http://brew.sh, http://www.finkproject.org
