Odd Graphic Things

Ok this is weird. I just finished installing the new operating system and now my iCal icon in my dock doesn't look right the number is up to high. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasondittmer/2385531994/in/photostream/
Also my address book doesn't look right. The bar above the notes is too low.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasondittmer/2385531998/in/photostream/
Last, in mail the number for the new messages isn't centered in the oval thing. It is up too high.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasondittmer/2385531996/in/photostream/
These things aren't going to kill me they just bother me. Anyone know what is causing this?

Welcome to the Apple boards:
No problems are trivial and some point to later issues so it's always good to fix things asap.
You have the right attitude.
I presume you have the same issues when the dock is at the bottom.
It may be a corrupted dock plist.
Did you upgrade from a previous install?
Try this:
Drag the library file,
com.apple.dock.plist
onto your desktop and reboot.
See if that helps.
If not, the individual plists may be corrupted.

  • Odd graphics problem, eventually leads to forced reboot, or even BSOD

I am fairly certain that this is firefox related, or plug in or maybe compatability issue, however I'm getting weird blocky graphics. which occasionlly seem to begin from a flash frame within a page, but I can't say this is 100% the cause. It looks like small multicolored boxes that are in odd patterns. and causes other odd graphics, it gets worse the longer I let it set. One time for the heck of it I rolled the scroll bar up and down about 10 times very quickly and it caused a BSOD. These odd graphics do not ever appear if I don't open Firefox (have been using IE today) but they do not disappear if I see them and then shut down Firefox. Usually I'm forced to reboot the computer because they take over too much of the screen, I can't see anything. It does change though, when I move windows and such, they are not limited to the Firefox window and spread to the empty desktop too.

Checked settings for Flash and I couldn't find hardware acceleration. 1st tab on Settings Manager is "Storage" and gives options for saving information on my computer ie. "Allow sites to save information on this computer"
2nd tab is Camera and Mic "Ask me when a site wants to use the camera or microphone"
3rd is Playback "Ask me when a site wants to use peer-assisted networking"
4th (last) is Advanced "Check for updates automatically" a couple other settings but no acceleration.

Here is the link to another thread where I explained the problem i was having. I thought it might have been linked to FCP, which is why I posted it there. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled FCP to no avail. I tried repairing the disk permissions. Nothing. I even tried dumping the FCP preferences. Absolutley a waste of time.
    Any suggestions?

  • 10.6.5 update - 27" iMac, Radeon 5750 odd graphics behaviours?

I updated my new iMac 27" to OS 10.6.5 today and have seen some odd graphics behaviours.
    1. Dock icon for Activity Monitor becomes transparent. Running AM, hidden showing CPU history
    2. White rectangle at bottom of expanding folder (list view)
    3. OK Button blue/white check mark pattern when configuring VPN. GUI feels "slow"
I updated using the Software Update tool; noticed these issues and re-updated using the Combo Installer; no change.
Any ideas or suggestions? Is this just me? I have a MacBook -- no probems at all!

    N Gallagher,
I had the problem earluer, but it got far worse with 10.6.5, however, I fixed it by updating my wacom tablet driver.
It wasn't the system update, but an old driver causing the problem.
Resetting PRAM, SMC and permissions and all the other standard drivel people post is nice sentiments, but it should be clear that the problem is something else because that solution hasn't solved the problem for anyone.
I have the sneaky suspicion that it's old flash and old drivers for most people.
See my original post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12570261#12570261
BUT. If you have a Wacom tablet, for to their website and download the latest driver from September 10, 2010.
That's all it took for all my graphics problems to go away.

  • Odd graphic in mail

Oddly, I noticed that every email I forward from work ends up with an image of a kiss in the upper right hand corner...directly across from the FROM, TO, SUBJECT section.
Anyone else have this or some other graphic only on email from a specific address? Am I missing something?

Does this appear when viewing messages sent by the account in the account's Sent mailbox at work?
If so, you add a user picture (or available icon) via System Preferences/Users under the Picture tab for your login account and this can also be done with your contact information in the Address Book.
Adding a user picture (or available icon) via System Preferences/Users is an easy process but removing it from there isn't as easy.
To remove the existing, go to your contact information in the Address Book. Select Edit to edit your contact information. Select the "Me" picture area to highlight it and then the Delete key.
The user picture or icon selected is not sent with your messages. In order to do so requires storing the picture or icon on the .Mac server (if you have a .Mac account) and even then, it would only appear if the recipient is a Mail.app user.

  • Odd graphics failure in Premiere Pro using Lion

Just fired up Premiere Pro for the first time since the Lion update, and it's having some issues.
See in the work panes at the bottom, that's one audio clip.
When I move it about it ghosts like an old school Windows graphics error, and goes mental.
If I press play and cause a new event to happen, like the playing cursor moving across the path of the image, it wipes it correct, but it's not exacty easy to work like this. Is it a compatability issue? Or is my Macbook about to fry or something? I need to know as I am meant to be working on a video for charity, which I volunteered to do, but now might not be able to if this is going to happen.
Was thinking of going Final Cut Pro X, not sure if this 2009 MBP can handle it though.
Anyway, if you have any ideas on why the above issue is happening, I'd be grateful, I need PP to work for me!
Edit: apologies, I see there's already a thread on this. Can't see a way to delete :/

....I " second" Bill's motion !!! I too had to recently replace my laptop, and like Bill, was able to find a " refurbished" Asus G750JW for much less than normal cost.Yesterday, I saw some that  were selling for $1,000,but, I think you can do better than that. I have been amazed atthe performance increase over my previous Asus i7 laptop. Some of that was due to the software itself....the newest version of PPro CCloud 2014 contains improvements which eliminated problems editing certain DSLR footage and increased the amount of system memory being used. Having the 24 GB of memory certainly improves things along with the much faster Haswell 4700 HQ CPU......it normally "turbos" itself up to 3.2 to 3.4 Ghz under load, with ALL cores in use ! The 765M Nvidia  GPU  does very well....I overclock it too, using MSI Afterburner and it seems to result in faster exporting times, direct out of PPro, using the DSLR footage on a timeline with multiplevideo tracks and accelerated effects. I believe the biggest improvement came from using two newer high quality SSDs. I used the cheaper Crucial , slightly older SSDs than Bill's.....his Samsung Pro 850s are currently the best. I used a Crucial M500 forthe boot drive and an M4 for the media drive. Performance on my machine was slightly lower than Bill's because of his better SSDs.....but still amazing, for a laptop!

  • Odd graphic in mail headers

My sister is seeing an odd image when examining the headers of a received email. When her mouse rolls over an area (I guess where address book info links are) then this huge circle appears. Its a powder blue circle with a small, white, downward pointed triangle at the 3 o'clock position. Also the different header fields become widely spaces vertically...
    Any ideas?

I don't fully understand what are you talking about, but I have the feeling that your sister has been playing too much with fonts lately:

  • Odd graphic appearing in drafts and sent mail opposite sender/date info

Hi, I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer some advice...
I've noticed just this past day or so that some of my draft and sent mail messages have inexplicably got a small image of a basketball appearing on the far right of the messages directly opposite where an addressee's name and the date of the message would appear. A friend has confirmed that he actually received a message with this basketball logo on it...!
The only other time I have seen this logo was last night when I had launched my iChat program for the first time using my aol IM account details, and I'd noticed the basketball graphic had been assigned next to my name when the program was open... But after deciding the iChat program wasn't offering anything I preferred particularly over my existing aol IM account I deleted my account details in iChat and quit the program... Could this be related?
Would be most grateful for any assistance- obviously with many business/work emails to send a basketball logo in the far right header of outgoing mail is not something I am happy with...!
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hello CMK.
Since you have the option to store sent messages on the server, this must be a .Mac or IMAP type account.
If so, quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes.
Locate the Sent Messages.mbox for this account - it will be Sent Messages (the IMAP account's name).mbox.
All locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac or IMAP type account are located in the Mailboxes folder.
Move the account's Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail for the account within the Mailboxes folder when sending the next message with the account.
This will prevent losing any new sent messages with the account while working on the old Sent Messages.mbox to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
Post back here listing the package content file names and size of each. This information is required to determine the next step to take.

  • Odd graphical corruption of windows desktop - UPDATE

    Hi,
Been running my new system for a couple of weeks now with no problems.
However today, after leaving the PC off all day, I came to turn it on to be presented with one strange looking windows desktop.
Multi coloured dots covered the screen, and although not heavily spread, they were evident.
They also appeared to move as on screen actions were carried out, for example, scrolling a page in IE.
After a warm reboot the problem has vanished, and hasn't occoured since (today).
Ive seen this kinda thing before with older cards, and it usually came down to some fundemental hardware issue.
Im hoping this isn't the case.....
Are there any known issues or problems that may causes this?
All temps were normal with the GPU at only 55 degrees.
    Nothing is overclocked.
System config should be in my sig.
    Thanks in advance.

and its possible that can affect the gfx card and when you reboot the card resets and it fixes itself.
yeah, thats the only part of the PC I didnt buy, it was actually given to me, and I had a feeling  it was trash.
Still, Ive havent noticed any power related issues after 2 weeks, but I think it may be a good idea to swap it out for a good power unit.
Any suggestions as to a good one thats not too expensive?

  • Odd Graphics Glitch

When I wake my mid 2010 (latest) 15" Macbook Pro (i7) There occasionally appear random green dots on the background. These are sometimes vaguely arranged in a grid, sometimes one or two, sometimes 10 or more. These are on the image and are software. If you put a pointer or window over them, they disappear. If you use the "digital color meter" they are there, and show up on the magnifier, so they are not a hardware problem with the panel.
If I sleep the computer, then wake, the dots or gone, or there might be a few different random ones.
Could it be a video card problem? I've got applecare, and the computer otherwise works fine, but I would like at some point to solve this..
    anyone any ideas?
    cheers
    John

I'm having the exact same issue on my 2.6GHz MBP, except that it's happening in Mail, as well, and not just due to html rendering. This only happened after the 10.5.2 and the graphics update. I just recently had to shut down my system after the screen went black. I was getting artifacts all over the screen, including the desktop and browser window, with a multi-colored line that went horizontally across the display consisting of one row of pixels and located about an inch and a half below the top of the display. I have only one piece of "skankware" installed and that's Inquisitor for Safari. I'm trying another user today, and hopefully get more info. Has anyone out there tried reinstalling the OS and it continues? If so, this may be an issue with the firmware update.

  • Odd graphics in Finder

    Hia,
for about 8 months I have some odd behavior in the finder. Buttons and window titles get somehow overwritten or garbaged. Restarting the Finder fixes this for a moment. The phenomena happens at different times, sometimes short after booting up, sometimes after 5-6 hours of operation.
since it is hard to describe, I added a screenshoot here:
    http://www.codebaker.de/OddBehaviour.png
A few months ago I asked the same here and the recommendation was to redo the location DB. All trough it was looking for a solution at the first glance, it is not the solution.
Any idea what I could do? Aside of deleting all prefs for the finder and reinstalling - done that.

Open the AppleScript Editor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    tell app "Finder" to quit
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    delay 2
    tell app "Finder" to run

  • Odd Graphical or Window artifacts What is it?

    Hello.
I have in the past week had some very strange graphical "ghosting" or "artifact-ing".
I can not determine the cause but am concerned that it may be a hardware issue and if so
I would like to head it off before it crashes....
    What happens is this:
    1. The system will "freeze" (no beach ball or Kernel panic it will just freeze with the exception of the cursor which will move freely with the mouse)
    2. Then one of the windows which I attempted to move on system freeze will get "Garbled" and a section will be "re-mixed" and stay in the area it was previously in.
    (see pic here http://www.markofman.com/files/graphics_issue.jpg )
    3. The time before last my "force quit" window had part of the safari browser displaying within the area where the open apps should have been...
I am worried that this may be my graphics card or worse my motherboard...
maybe it is RAM? (I put some new ram in a month ago...)
are there any tests or has anyone experienced this before?
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks
    2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon MacPro
    13 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

I'm having a similar issue with my Mac Mini (late 2009). for the past two weeks, I am experiencing multiple vertical red dost/lines in numerous places on my monitor. I can't take a screen shot. it does not show in the screen shot. I have taken a video however.
The program it affect is Safari. It freezes safari regularly with a weird black flickering screen that take up 80% of the screens. And the only way to escape is to hard boot(or if i'm lucky i can get to the restart button...or simply quit Safari) Then it works fine. But the artifacts still remain.
I aslo thought I might have hardware or fan problem. I original thought my nVidia 9400m was trashed. But...it works perfectly in bootcamp...(strange)
I've been an apple tech on and off since 1984. I've done everything that i can find on the boards ( remove and test RAM: refreshed and reinstalled clean OS) This one is baffling. Because it still shows up with the startup disk. But not bootcamp.
I have one more month left on my applecare. it might be time to take it in
Thanks for listening. Any leads would be very welcome

  • Screen locking up, odd graphics errors, kernel panics

    Hello,
My girlfriend just got a Macbook Pro, been working fine until last night, she was getting graphic errors, the screen was like toubled up, and the cursor became just a dot, but repeated about 8 times. She could move the cursor, but nothing worked. I was able to login using SSH to the mac, and that was all fine, I tried killall Skype, it quit but was still open on her screen.
We installed the EFI update from the command line via SSH, didn't fix it, then reset the PRAM, that seemed to fix that issue.
However, this morning she has had mutiple kernel panics, I've logged in on SSH again and got the log, can anyone help me diagnose what could be causing it?

Any thoughts are welcome, she has a Macbook Pro, with 8GB RAM, and a 500GB HDD, she shelled out over £2,000 for it, any explanation for the cause of this would be brilliant
    Thanks!

  • Odd graphics errors on screen.

I've had my iMac 24in for umm one day now, I love the speed and power but, there seems to be what look like dead pixels... I know they are not because they are reddish pink in color and change position as I open new windows, applications and the like.
I'm not sure what is causing this. I just want to know if anyone has heard of this before I call up apple.
    Thanks in advance.
    iMac 24in   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What you are describing sounds like stuck pixels of some kind. Try something like http://www.jscreenfix.com/ for an hour, and if you keep getting the problem after that I imagine it is something more permanent.

  • I am getting odd graphic characters on my Joomla website administrator screen.

Would like to add a screenshot but cannot see how. Instead of the characters on the edit screen I am getting characters with EA2A (2A show below EA asnd bounded by a box) or EA2B, etc. Tried upgrading to Firefox 34 but made no difference. On my laptop everything is normal. What could be going wrong?

Please disregard my question.  I got it working again.  Just don't ask me how! Thanks!
