Odd graphical corruption of windows desktop - UPDATE

Hi,
Been running my new system for a couple of weeks now with no problems.
However today, after leaving the PC off all day, I came to turn it on to be presented with one strange looking windows desktop.
Multi coloured dots covered the screen, and although not heavily spread, they were evident.
They also appeared to move as on screen actions were carried out, for example, scrolling a page in IE.
After a warm reboot the problem has vanished, and hasn't occoured since (today).
Ive seen this kinda thing before with older cards, and it usually came down to some fundemental hardware issue.
Im hoping this isn't the case.....
Are there any known issues or problems that may causes this?
All temps were normal with the GPU at only 55 degrees.
Nothing is overclocked.
System config should be in my sig.
Thanks in advance.

when you cold start the computer uses a huge amount of power to spin up harddrives and fans for example.
and its possible that can affect the gfx card and when you reboot the card resets and it fixes itself.
yeah, thats the only part of the PC I didnt buy, it was actually given to me, and I had a feeling  it was trash.
Still, Ive havent noticed any power related issues after 2 weeks, but I think it may be a good idea to swap it out for a good power unit.
Any suggestions as to a good one thats not too expensive?

  • Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade - Stuck at Windows Desktop Update

Ok so I have a 4 year old laptop that had Windows 7 Ultimate on it. It is a Intel dual core computer with 4GB of RAM.
I left it over night to download and install the SP1 patch. I wake up this morning and sign in, it shows a black screen and in the upper left it has "Setting up personalized settings for: Windows Desktop Update"
I thought that this might take some time so I left for about an hour, now I am back and this screen is still there. I fear that it has broken itself and that it is broken. Is there a way to fix this issue?

During the Black screen, try using Ctrl Alt Delete
    Go to task manager
check your CPU usage (mine was at zero when i did this)
    Go to processes
    and end both the
processes that start with Reg (I apologize i cant fully remember the name of it)
Make sure you do this by right clicking and ending the process tree
This is how i got past that screen, and my laptop seems to be working fine and its been a few days since

  • Graphics are corrupted with windows after playing WoW.

    Hello,
I have a bought new Macbook and up until recently, it has been completely problem free. Recently though, I have had a few issues regarding some slight graphics corruption on windows and software.
For example the edges of the windows on Preview.
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn77/mrmalachai/Picture1-1.png
These graphical disturbances seem to come about after I play WoW and seem to disappear again after a quick restart, but I just wondering what might be causing it and if it is something I should worry about.
Is there any way to prevent these strange graphical disruptions?
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks guys.
    S.

You should be searching using Google or going into a WoW forum because it's an issue caused by WoW. It seems to be rare because lots of people play WoW and I've never heard this before.

  • Graphic corruption, motherboard causing it?

Hello all, I have a MSI K8T-Neo FISR2R KT800 motherboard with a amd64 3.0+ Ghz CPU, Gainward GF6800GT and SB Audigy. The problem started about 1-2 months ago when suddenly small parts of my screen on the desktop went corrupted momentarly. However, this didnt occur too often and I didnt give it much attention.
Anyhow, about 3 days ago the problem reached its climax. The corruption showed itself in several games wich would result in a freeze and eventually, a reboot. My first thought was that it was OS related, so I reformated my harddrive and installed the latest drivers in hope to get rid of this problem. Right now the problem is that when I run games or certain applications, the screen is black (although the monitor does not go to powersave mode) while the program/game runs normally. The video output has gone away, so to say. Also some winamp visualizations are rendered as black or corrupted. I changed the videocard to a GForce FX 5200 and the same problems remains.
However, If i change the rendering device in unreal tournament 2004 to openGL, then the game runs normally. My directX is 9.0c. What could be wrong here? I dont have anything OC'ed, and I have excellent cooling on both my CPU and GPU. my PSU gives 400W and thats more than enough i belive (if it was a power related issue, then the problems would have ceased with FX 5200 since it dosent require a power wire attached to it).
Could it be the motherboard that has gone bad? in that case, why can it render some graphics and some not at all?
    TIA

Hmmm never saw one do that yet. Power? Yes it could be but I don't think so in this case where the second vid card that uses less power does the same. Motherboard? I would not think that it can selectively corrupt just a certain section of the screen. The Motherboard does not create a screen matrix. It sends stuff to the video card more in line with a stream of data over several pipelines. While that is an oversimplification it gets you to visualize how it works.
There is one more device in the chain though that could mess up consistantly at the matrix level and that is the monitor. I think I would considure that before I would the MB.
    Just my humble opinion
that sounds like a unlikely cause, considering the freeze i mentioned earlier but i did however try with another monitor, and the problem remained.
Lets see... if both the GPU's are fine, the mobo seem to be unlikely to be defect, and no recent BIOS changes has been done, what else could be the cause? I think it could be the software but since this is a fresh install and I shoved in new drivers and all...
Still it dosent explain how those small graphic corruptions on the desktop escalated to complete freezes and eventually a complete black screen...

  • Nvidia 7300/7600gt desktop users with Aperture graphic corruption read:

Not promising anything, but consider installing the January 19, 2010 "Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 (iMac and Mac Pro) compatibility with Windows 7" then perform a restart as per the installer. Then restart while resetting PRAM (I have done this numerous times before this update, so don't even think of suggesting this was the fix) and then shut down for good measure and reboot again....what the ****....
    EXPLANATION:
I have a new HD, new RAM, new clean Aperture and OS install. I have been trying to determine the source of my woes for months. I also performed a complete check of the innards of my machine (checking voltages, yanking mother boards and GPU board for visual inspections, capacitor failures, connections, traces, etc......all to prove everything looked great with little dust) But I still had issues.
For kicks, even though I am not running WIndows 7 or BootCamp (I use VMWare for XP Pro) I updated the graphics firmware in my computer. It says: "Download and install the Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 IF YOU RUN WINDOWS 7 using Boot Camp on your iMac (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 or 7600 GT) or Mac Pro (with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or Quadro FX 4500) computer." (Capital emphasis mine) Furthermore, some descriptions I have seen for this refer to "early 2008" models...clearly not mine...though Apple, to my knowledge, never made iMacs in 2008 with a 7300/7600 GT card. They were produced in 2006 and early 07.
I originally assumed this update was not required or recommended for those of us NOT using WIndows 7 (and perhaps this assumption is correct, technically). Well, I did the update, and since performing this update...I am nervous to even suggest this....I see the graphic corruption has not occurred while making adjustments. I have even used screen sharing with Aperture in full screen mode with success....crazy, I know.
This is...so far...a miracle. It also proves in my twisted dementia and euphoria, that it was NOT (here comes the jinx) hardware failure related, but rather a driver or firmware issue. (of course you will see a follow up about how this was an awful idea plagued with problems and no fix for Aperture....but be patient, all good drama needs time)
Let me be clear, the update never popped up via software update and the update itself says it is for windows 7 boot camp users of which I am NOT...
The ROM Revision # has changed in "About This Mac" TO 3467 FROM 3021. I cannot necessarily suggest this was a fix (I have done nothing else, however, to my computer since), but it seems to have worked so far. I have no idea how to roll back this firmware if you should try this, not succeed and suffer problems. But for the risk-takers (not sure how risky this is for the described users) it's worth a shot. Post your experience via this thread, just to confirm if I am imagining this....

Does it still crash if you change your directory that you are exporting to, but leave it in icon mode?
Yes. I just checked, and the 2nd try it crashed when in icon mode to another than the usual directory. Usually I export to the Desktop, now I exported to the home-dir.
Are there other images or pdfs of interesting items in the directory?
My Desktop is usually empty. I tried again exporting random images one by one removing each exported image in between, and after around six times it crashed. So I would say: No.
Do the icon size or text settings have an effect on if you crash or not?
I have tried with 2 sizes 64x64 and 128x128 with the same result: Crash. So I would say No, but I haven't tried all icon sizes.

    Hello ibebry
Try using the Software Update on your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Software Update. One thing to keep in mind if you are trying it on the computer is to make sure that you are not pressing any keys down when checking for updates as that may bring up a pop up window to find the update file.

  • Recent Windows 7 update causing monitor sleep problems/Windows loop in some HP desktops?

After perusing this forum, I wonder if there was a recent Windows 7 update that has been causing problems for some HP desktops and displays. My office has a 3500 Microtower desktop running Windows 7 Pro. While Windows 7 Pro is running and in use (as in, not prompted by any user-set power management option), the dual HP displays (via DVI split to VGA) will enter sleep mode ("No Signal", I believe) seemingly randomly/chaotically and without warning. No amount of mouse-waving and keyboard-smashing will wake the displays. The displays will not receive a signal after being turned off then on. Then, not immediately but after some undetermined time, the desktop hard drive light will begin to blink at a consistent 1-second interval (approximate), as though it is stuck in a loop.
My guess, based on both our office's experience and the posts I've read with the same problem (see below for links), is that this update would have become available either November 16 or 17, November 15 at the earliest.
Thank you for your attention to this conundrum!
    Aaron
One more piece, not sure if relevant: a user connected remotely in order to monitor the desktop, but detected no problems with the machine. Unfortunately, I was not able to remain with the desktop to see if the displays had shut off at any point during his monitoring.

    Hi Wizards,

  • 10.6.5 update - 27" iMac, Radeon 5750 odd graphics behaviours?

I updated my new iMac 27" to OS 10.6.5 today and have seen some odd graphics behaviours.
    1. Dock icon for Activity Monitor becomes transparent. Running AM, hidden showing CPU history
    2. White rectangle at bottom of expanding folder (list view)
    3. OK Button blue/white check mark pattern when configuring VPN. GUI feels "slow"
I updated using the Software Update tool; noticed these issues and re-updated using the Combo Installer; no change.
Any ideas or suggestions? Is this just me? I have a MacBook -- no probems at all!

    N Gallagher,
I had the problem earluer, but it got far worse with 10.6.5, however, I fixed it by updating my wacom tablet driver.
It wasn't the system update, but an old driver causing the problem.
Resetting PRAM, SMC and permissions and all the other standard drivel people post is nice sentiments, but it should be clear that the problem is something else because that solution hasn't solved the problem for anyone.
I have the sneaky suspicion that it's old flash and old drivers for most people.
See my original post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12570261#12570261
BUT. If you have a Wacom tablet, for to their website and download the latest driver from September 10, 2010.
That's all it took for all my graphics problems to go away.

    I've updated my graphics drivers
I've also deleted and reloaded Premiere Elements from the disc
I reloaded quick time and accepted the latest version
    All have no affect.
My system is a windows 7  64 bit PC.
I also have plenty of hard drive space

Look at the issue with and without the antivirus disabled. If that does not help....
There is a likelihood that the program may not be properly activated. Please review the following for possible solution

and in the 12.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Options Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the whole path cited.

  • Intel 3000 Graphics driver from windows update failing to install. Error 800F0244

Hi all, So an update has come through windows update for my embedded graphics which is an Intel HD 3000. Problem is the update keeps failing. Tried restarting and nothing changed. I ended up jumping on to the Windows Forums and seems like this problem has just started to pop up for quite alot of users and no solution yet. This is what the windows website says for the Error : SPAPI_E_SIGNATURE_OSATTRIBUTE_MISMATCH0x800F0244 The software was tested for compliance with Windows Logo requirements on a different version of Windows, and may not be compatible with this version. So was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if anyone found a solution?

Hi Everyone , So after a few minutes of digging around this is what I found. This is the driver version that is failing for intel HD 3000. ( 9.17.10.4229 )     So I thought I'd check the driver on the Intel site, to see if it was the latest, which it was .. (9.17.10.4229)    And this is the driver currently installed for my HD 3000... and as noted its  ( 9.17.10.4229 )   SO its seems this problm is a windows update issue and the most current driver is available through intels website. No need to stress, jump onto the intel downloads page and download the latest one if you havent already, This is a link to the  32Bit Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24970/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-8-1-32bit  Heres the link for the 64Bit https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24971/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-64-bit As for the windows update one, hide that update as clearly something isnt right and surely MS will patch it soon enough! Hoped this helped

  • Odd graphics problem, eventually leads to forced reboot, or even BSOD

I am fairly certain that this is firefox related, or plug in or maybe compatability issue, however I'm getting weird blocky graphics. which occasionlly seem to begin from a flash frame within a page, but I can't say this is 100% the cause. It looks like small multicolored boxes that are in odd patterns. and causes other odd graphics, it gets worse the longer I let it set. One time for the heck of it I rolled the scroll bar up and down about 10 times very quickly and it caused a BSOD. These odd graphics do not ever appear if I don't open Firefox (have been using IE today) but they do not disappear if I see them and then shut down Firefox. Usually I'm forced to reboot the computer because they take over too much of the screen, I can't see anything. It does change though, when I move windows and such, they are not limited to the Firefox window and spread to the empty desktop too.

Checked settings for Flash and I couldn't find hardware acceleration. 1st tab on Settings Manager is "Storage" and gives options for saving information on my computer ie. "Allow sites to save information on this computer"
2nd tab is Camera and Mic "Ask me when a site wants to use the camera or microphone"
3rd is Playback "Ask me when a site wants to use peer-assisted networking"
4th (last) is Advanced "Check for updates automatically" a couple other settings but no acceleration.

  • Graphical corruption in X after playing media or using chromium

In SMPlayer (xv output) and sdlmame, when I switch to full screen, afterwards X will show graphical corruption. This does not seem to happen with VLC or GnomeMPlayer.
For SMPlayer, the task bar space between icons and the pager, and the rest of it after the pager will become unreadable and just a mess of grey and coloured lines. After about a minute when the clock applet updates the time, it will redraw and become readable again (only the clock applet, not the whole bar). To make the rest visible too, I have to move the mouse over it and click the icons (volume, brightness, and so on) so they get redrawn.
In the case of sdlmame, the desktop background picture even gets corrupted in maybe its top 25% area over the full screen width.
When I start chromium web browser, the top part of the browser window and the task bar above it will flicker like crazy with corrupted lines. Sometimes the whole window will flicker, I think. This happens mostly while typing in an URL, and leaves the same corruption in the task bar as SMPlayer (->have to mouseover/click on the icons to make them redraw).
It happens _all the time_ if I just move the mouse over the website (for examle google translate). I don't even have to click on anything, just moving will make the whole upper half of the chromium window flicker like crazy with corrupted lines, rendering the page unreadable.
In Firefox this problem does not occur at all.
I'm using Xfce4 and Compositor is disabled.

I am now pretty sure that this is a software bug in Leopard. I have been back to Tiger for 10 days straight now and the problem hasn't reoccurred.
It can't the temperature, because I installed iStats and they show the hottest part is GPU, but it is only 51 degrees C (123.8 fahrenheit) during hours of heavy use. Also back in leopard I tried out a fan control app and set all fans to max RPM (which was really loud), and that didn't affect the random polygons.
I don't know why it happens only in Leopard but I am not going to update back to it till I know for sure that this has been fixed.
PS. The only system level 3rd party app I had installed in Leopard when the problem first occurred was Steer mouse, but I doubt a mouse driver can cause this kind of a problem. Besides I have it always installed in Tiger too. This is why I outclose the possibility of 3rd party apps being the cause.
