Odd HD noise but only in Windows

I wasn't sure where to post this, but since it pertains to my Boot Camp Windows partition, I thought I'd start here.
I've noticed for some time, now with Windows 7 and previously with Vista, when I'm in Windows, that there is a fairly loud, dull "clunk" when I open any Windows folder, or open any attached external hard drive. The sound is metallic, though not pingy, and appears to be hardware related. However, there's no such sound when I'm in Snow Leopard, which, of course, shares the same hard drive. In my experience, physical hard-drive issues are not specific to partitions. Fortunately, the noise does not occur when using applications, only when opening folders.
Anyone have a similar experience or have an idea what this might be about?

Not a dumb question at all, as you are entirely correct. I've used Windows for years, but never heard that sound and don't recall ever changing from the default "click." Thanks!!!!

In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
Open Finder and use one of these:
* Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
* Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.
* Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
* chflags nohidden ~/Library

Wont boot - no chimes, fan noise but only with battery connected

It's an old Powerbook G4 - A1138 that won't boot.
If you press the power button, the fan whirrs quickly and loudly. But only with the battery connected. If the battery is removed (but the computer is connected to the power supply) then nothing happens...
I have tried re-setting the PMU as per this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 This didn't help.
Is it now dead? If I can just reach a point whereby I can boot it in Firewire HD mode (normally holding command + T down) and recover content then great!

Text aligns centre instead of left, but only on Windows 7 PCs.

I have designed a website on a Mac in CS5. It works fine on all Macs and PCs running XP/Vista but there are problems on Windows 7.
For some reason text boxes that I have aligned left work fine as mentioned above, but every text box aligns centre on Windows 7 PCs.
Can anyone offer any advice please? I'm pretty new to this by the way!

This is on the PC with blue boxes (thanks for link will check that out) and all text centered.
Like I say, text displays fine on windows XP in explorer and firefox, just not on Windows 7 PCs.

Thunderbolt display flickers but only in Windows 7

My Early 2011 MBP in Bootcamp to Windows 7 will flicker, blank out then come back maybe once every 5-10 minutes. It only happens in Windows 7 and not in OSX. Anyone else see this issue?

Stick with DVI.
Too many have reported issues with Windows 7 and VGA through Thunderbolt. Seems the Windows 7 driver only does digital, not analog.
If you must use VGA with Windows 7 on a Mac, the suggested paths are:
USB-VGA adapter, bypassing Thunderbolt
Run Windows in VM and let Mac OSX run it all since it can make analog (VGA) signals.

Noise but only with DVI

I have started using my machine with an external monitor/speakers.
Unfortunately, the speakers have a very bad hiss/white noise. The hiss is so bad and constant that I have had to go back to using the MBP hiss-free internal speaker.
I have done some investigation and it turns out that if I unplug the DVI cable from the MBP the hiss goes. I have tried re-routing the cable but no luck. I have not tried another cable (the one I am using does seem to be of reasonable quality).
Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to stop this noise (MBP is out of warranty).

Hi there, im a conference technician at conference hotel and recently several mac users among our guest have a simulare problem. If the macbook is connected both to our soundsystem and a VGA projector there is a humming noice as if there is a grounding problem, and thats probably what it is. The sound system amp, projector and the MAC are placed with some distance and im not 100% sure they are connected to the same ground.
How ever this noice is not a problem when using older Mac's (pre-DVI connection) nor is it a problem with any brand of PC computers.
Could i do something with the DVI-VGA transformer?
or any other advices would be welcome.

Z87-G43 latest BIOS (180) now no USB, but only in Windows?!

I performed the bios update today with the assistance of MSI support.
No problems with their USB stick method, that part went fine.
However, now, I lose all USB once the motherboard boots.
I Have USB in the BIOS setup screens, etc. Once the OS boots, I lose the USB stack.
Whats happening here?

It turns out that the USB 3.0 and other USB stack drivers become MEANINGLESS after the BIOS update.
Re-installing these brought the things back online.
Be sure to also install all the latest chipset and USB drivers as well.
sigh. Documentation and testing seem to be weak with this organization.

Also when I click on the link in my email to activate my account (in the hopes that a solve will be emailed to me) I get this message -

I'm using a 2014 iMac and a Win 8.1 64bit install disc with bootcamp. I created the ISO according to the instructions but when I selected it in bootcamp I got the following error "Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later..."

Bootcamp rejects the ISO file made from a windows 8.1 disc with the error message "Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for Windows 7 or later installation."
How do I get past this?

No the ISO is just 64bit. I bought a shrink wrapped copy of 8.1 full version. It has two discs, one for 32bit and one for 64bit. I used the 64bit disc.
I inserted it in an older iMac that has a dvd drive, and shared that across to my new iMac. I used disc utility to create a disc image following instructions I found here...

This created an ISO file. I then went into bootcamp but when I tried to use the ISO file to create a boot USB it failed with the error above.

One File (But Only 1) shows as an icon in List View of a Finder Window

Finder windows has one inconsistency, but only for this one file, which is a JPG photo. In list view with the option to not show thumbnails (under Command J) Then I get generic JPG badges for each file. If I select: "Show as Icon" then I get a small photo icon for each photo. So far, so good. The problem is with one individual photo file. It always shows as a photo icon, regardless of how I set the checkbox for Show as Icon within a finder Window by sing Command J. So the problem seems to be with that individual file by itself. Using Command I for Show Information on the individual files does not give me any options or clues about how to control the presentation of the icon on its individual files.
Looking at the same image but with different file names or paths, then everything is normal and as it should be. The simple answer is simply erase the "goofy" file and replace it with a new version, but I want to understand what the OS is doing. The same issue with the same file was under OSX 3 and 4. I have 10.6 Snow Leopard now, but the issues was there with Tiger and so on.
An ideas?

It sounds as if the file has its own custom icon, which is different from the "icon preview" that the system constructs on the fly when a custom icon is not present and you have also checked the "show icon preview" box in View Options. If you want to remove a custom icon, do a Get Info on the file, click on the icon at the top left to select it, and hit command-X.

Hold Option key when starting - that gives you the option to choose between startup disks.

Most external drives are formatted for Windows; you should be able to format it for Mac. Plug it in, open Disk utility, highlight the drive and choose the Partition tab. Do not worry about any software on the drive - you don't need it and it will be erased. In the partition tab, choose how many you want, name them, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and, under the Options button, choose GUID partition scheme. Hit Apply. The drive will be erased and formatted. If that process does not work, contact Seagate and inquire about the Mac compatibility.

Only songs that are physically stored on the iOS device can be deleted with a swipe. Songs that have been listened to, and are in the temporary cache, apparently can not be deleted with a swipe. The easiest way to get rid of these songs is to go to Settings > General > Usage, tap Music (you may need to scroll down in the list), swipe across "all music" then tap the delete button. This will delete ALL music on the device.
Also, iCloud and iTunes Match are not the same service.

Restart your phone,hold the home button and the off button down till the apple symbol comes up. If that doesnt fix it , you need to do a restore in itunes by connecting to itunes , click on your phones name to the left, then click restore in the center of the screen and restore from backup.

Windows or apple it makes no difference, if you don't have the install discs you can't install.
Did you buy the machine with Adobe (you don't say what adobe program you're talking about) installed? If so the vendor should have given you the discs or else it's technically a pirated copy. If you're talking about acrobat (which is free) then you should be able to find older versions on the adobe site.
