Odd high data consumption on 10.3.1 (and 10.2.1) - on wifi, but routing over mobile network?

Couldn't find a similar recent thread. Just an inconclusive one from 2013 that looked more about the difference between BBOS 7 & BB10.
tl;dr: It looks like my Z10 is routing some traffic to the mobile network when to applications it looks like the wifi connection is active.
I have not previously had high data-use issues with my Z10. On Friday February 20th, I updated to 10.3.1.1581. On Friday March 6th, I got a notice saying I'd used 75% of my data (billing cycle is on the 18th, 800MB limit). At that point, the device monitor said I'd used ~300MB*.
Woke up the next morning and say an alert that came in overnight saying I'd gone past my limit, and the device monitor said I'd used ~540MB.
240MB of mobile network data use while I was at home, connected to wifi, and asleep. The device monitor attributed it to "System". Normally, my mobile data use is mostly PIM and Browser.
I looked back in the data usage report from Koodo and saw that there was a previous, similar spike on Feb 20, earlier in the day before the 10.3.1 upgrade. Right around the time I turned on wifi at work and put the phone on its dock, hoping to start the upgrade. That failed due to AP issues.
I use "Pocket Casts" (Android podcast app). It's set to download only when on wifi and connected to power.
Could it be that it thought I was connected to wifi, but due to weak signal strength, the OS actually routed the connection over the mobile network? I sometimes only have one bar of signal strength in my bedroom.
If that's the case, why is an Android app's data use recorded as "System" and not at least "Android Player"? It looks like it must be lumped in under "System", though, as the wifi usage numbers don't show anything else with enough bandwidth consumption to account for podcast downloads.

hi,
what is Koodo and what do "AP issues" mean?
besides, on Friday 20th, which OS version did you update from?

    Sounds like a hardware failure.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and take it in for them to look at. It will probably need to be replaced.

Firefox also makes regular backups of your bookmarks in a folder named bookmarkbackups in your personal settings folder. You can restore the backup to your new Firefox, but unlike importing the HTML-format file, it is a complete drop-in replacement, so if you have saved new bookmarks you do not want to lose, the export/import method may work better for you.
By default, Windows hides your personal settings folder so the easiest way to access it is from inside Firefox. You can use either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This will launch a window showing your Firefox settings files.
You might want to back up this whole folder if you have other data you want to preserve from your XP computer.
Either way, you should find the bookmarkbackups folder here and when you click into it, find maybe 10 files with dates in their names.
The procedure to restore the file once you have it on removable media or some other convenient place is described in this article: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
Regarding the other files and what you might find of use: [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].

  • No Network Available... Attaches to wifi but cant find 3G network for data service

Took phone to local store and rep tried to fix... stated that they no longer have the true technical backroom equipment that they used to for diagnosis or repair.  Really didnt want to hear that since its a full option store in Aiken SC.
Phone works, as stated it will attach to wifi in home but I cant access Backup Assistant or any other option that needs the 3G network.  Rep at store stated that I needed to call LG...
Internal setting are for the Digital Only Hybrid... not finding 3G network
set back to 1x only... still doesnt find network.
    Any suggestions on a fix?
    Thanks for your help

If this is an issue specific to your home you might want to look for a 3g signal booster / repeater.

  • Getting high data acquisition rate (Under 1ms)

    Hello,
I'm having a bit of trouble with data resolution when taking voltage measurements from my photodiode. I have been collecting data at about 1 point per ms and I need to be collecting at a resolution greater than this (however my actual needed resolution is not yet known as the signal is currently buried due to resolution problems). I'm currently using labview version 8.6 to collect data from a ThorLabs PDA36A amplified photodetector (resolution of 17MHz) running to a NI BNC-2110 and then to a PCI-6143 card with a 250kHz resolution.  I've attached the code below.
The one item of interest that I have noted is that I am able to select the frequency of data collection in the DAQmx_read.vi properties however whenever I run the code all it spits out is one point per ms. With any frequency higher than 1kHz (which is the default) the data output occasionally puts 5-6 data points at one time each time being on ms apart.
     Any help will be appreciated.
P.S. I've attached both files which I use to check our data. The Light Sensor is the file that collects the data, the Read File file just spits out a graph after I've saved the information. I've tried to speed this code up as much as possible and am now convinced code speed is no longer an issue and that the problem lies elsewhere.

On your DAQmx Timing vi, you need to specify the source input to Onboard Clock.  Otherwise you have no timing source.  On your DAQmx Read vi, set the polymorphic selector to Single Channel - Multiple Samples - Waveform.  Then use the Get Waveform Components to get dt.  This gives the time interval between samples.  You can use the same Get Waveform Components to get Y, which is the same 1D array of data as you get in your original code.
If you use the Waveform data type, you can wire it directly to a Waveform Graph and eliminate the top loop altogether.

  • Very high data traffic generated by Nokia Messagin...

Is anyone else seeing really high data use on their phone log following last week's Messaging outage?
Up until last week's outage, the data traffic generated by Messaging was about 5kb an hour (with no new emails sent or received). Presumably this small amount of data traffic results from the Nokia email server "pinging" the phone periodically to keep the connection open.
But after last week's outage and issues with passwords being requested etc etc, I saw that the data traffic generated by the Messaging app has gone through the roof - about 400 - 500kb an hour!  Again, this is with no new emails sent or received - so theoretically is just the server pinging the phone to keep the idle connection open!
I reinstalled Nokia Messaging on my phone (E61i) - no difference - the data generated by the Messaging app is still 400 - 500 kb an hour (it stops when I take Messaging offline).
I have friends roaming in Ireland and their phone has had the same problem - the data traffic generated by their Messaging app is sky high and they have had to shut it down because of the high cost of data whilst roaming.
I also newly installed Messaging on another phone (N95) that I have, using a brand new email account and a new T-mobile SIM card, and guess what - that phone also has sky high data traffic due to Messaging.
What is going on??  Can someone at Nokia Messaging please sort this out?  Anyone roaming with Nokia Messaging enabled is facing hugh data charges from their network.

The data traffic occurs in phones which are on a home network (mine in the UK) and on a roaming network (my friends traveling in Ireland).  Interestingly, I've now checked with another friend who is roaming in Italy and they also use Messaging but haven't seen any high packet data issues with their phone.
The data traffic shows up in the Packet Log, as well as on the actual T-Mobile network account (plus the charges for the data!)  Accessing a T-Mobile UK account online shows all packet data use - in this case, 120-150 kb every 15 minutes, whereas before last week it was 1-2kb every 15 minutes.
When I "Go Offline" with Nokia Messaging, the high data traffic stops, both on the Packet Log and network account, so I am 100% certain this is due to Messaging.

To reduce data usage, you should put iPad on Aeroplane Mode to stop all background activities when not using iPad.

it's my understanding that when traveling overseas, all i have to do is turn off cellular data to avoid high data charges.

With Airplane Mode you will not receive phone calls.  If you are just worried about Data Charges then just go to Settings>Cellular>Data 'Off'  This may also turn your iMessage off such that all your iMessages even in a WiFi environment go out as Text Messages.  If you still want to use iMessage from Apple device to Apple device in a WiFi network then go to Settings>Messages> and turn it back on after you have set Cellular Data to Off.  Ckuan is correct though about having some per minute received or outgoing call and text charges.  For one example, if you were traveling in Canada but didn't have a Canada Plan you would pay about 89 cents per minute and 50 cents per send / receive Text.

  • High data use handoff

II have been trying to find out why I had unusually high data upload and download on my internet account and traced it back to Handoff feature. Basically GB's per day. Most users may not be aware of this as Handoff is turned on by default. A great feature but is not practical for those on smaller ADSL Data plans.
Wondered if there were any comments/feedback on this

What network are you on? ..... As the network's own apps that measure data usage arnt very reliable. I work for vodaofne and our own data usage app is usually wrong in the first month of having your handset.
Also check your location services, are they on? As if you have apps that use this feature then that could be eating it up.
What I'd recomend is ringing your operator and just checking that you have actually used what you think you have.
Also what apps are you generally using when you are not on wi-fi?
And have you remembered to close apps in your multitasking bar once done with them. I once had a customer that had 56 apps running in the background, and that used all her data up over a few weeks.
Its also worth asking, how much data usage do you actually have?

  • Performance: How to manage large reports with high data volume

    Hi everybody,
we actually make some tests on our BO server system, to define limitations and oppertunities. Among other things we constructed a large report with a high data volume (about 250.000 data records).
When executing the query in SAP Query Designer it takes about 10 minutes to display it. In Crystal Reports we rebult the row and column structure of the query. The data retrieval in Crystal Reports Designer last about 9 minutes - even faster as in the query.
Unfortunately in BO InfoView the report is not displayed. After 30 minutes of loading time we get a timeout error RCIRAS0244.
    com.crystaldecisions.sdk.occa.managedreports.ras.internal.ManagedRASException:
    Cannot open report document. ---
The request timed out because there has been no reply from the server for 600.000 milliseconds.
Also a refresh of an report with saved data is not possible.
Now we are asking us some questions:
    1. Where can we set the timeout for InfoView to a value larger than 30 minutes?
    2. Why is InfoView so slow compared to Crystal Designer? Where is the bottleneck?
    3. Whats the impact of SAP single sign-on compared to Enterprise logon on the performance?
Thanks for any helps and comments!
    Sebastian

    Hi Ingo,
    thank you for your reply.
I will check the servers and maybe change the time limits.
Unfortunately we have a quite slow server system that probably cause this timeout. In CR Designer we have no problems, its really quick. Is it to expect that CR Designer and InfoView have almost the same performance?
Another nice point: When we execute the query in SAP BEx Query Designer it takes about 10 minutes to open it, in Crystal Designer it needs just about 5-6 minutes. We integrated exactly the same fields in the report, which exist in die SAP BEx query.
    What may cause the difference?
    - Exceptions and conditions in the query?
    - Free characteristics in the query?
    - anything else?
    Best regards,
    Sebastian

  • Anyone using durable topics with high data volumes?

We're evaluating JMS implementations, and our requirements call for durable subscribers, where subscribers can go down for several hours, while the MQ server accumulates a large number of messages.
Is anyone using Sun MQ in a similar scenario? How is it holding up?
Sun folks, do you know of production installations that use durable topics with high data volumes?
    thanks,
    -am

We are using a cluster of Suns JMS MQ 3.6 with durable message queues and persistent topics. In a 4 hour window each night we run over 20,000 messages through a queue. The cluster sits on two Windows servers, the producer client is on a AIX box and the consumer is running on a iSeries. Within the 20,000 messages are over 400,000 transactions. Each message can have many transactions. Yes, the iSeries client has gone down twice and the producer continued with the message queue pilling up, as it should. We just use the topic to send and receive command and status inquiries to the clients. So every thing works fine. We have only had a couple issues with a client locking and that maybe fixed with sp3, we are in the process of installing that. The only other issue we have had is that once in a while the producer tries to send an object message with to many transactions and it throws and JMS exceptions. So we put a cap on the size of the messages, if its over a set number of transactions it send each transaction as separately, otherwise it sends all the transactions in one object type (linked list of transactions) message. Compare the cost of this JMS system with Tibco or Sonic and youre looking at big savings.

  • Unusally High Data Charges and Unwillingness to help

Hi, I am wanting to find out if anyone has had unusually high data usage on their Home DSL ? I have been dealing with Verizon on a problem since August and have received exactly no help on this problem. I received a bill for over $600 and they say I've used over 75G of data in a month. Also since I have refused to pay the bill and they have suspended service, I have used over 65G of data since they have suspended service. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I have a business line through my employer and have talked to the business center on this matter and nothing has been done except for my bill to keep going up even after they have suspended service. Help Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if someone who doesn't know the difference between DSL( stands for digital subscriber line ) and wireless can say with any authority they didn't use the amount of data in question.
Using 75 GB in a month is nothing. Especially if you connecting a PC to your connection. 75 GB would be a light month for us.
Anyways what devices do you connect with your connection?

  • New phone shows high data usage in My Verizon right after purchase - why?

I purchased a new Galaxy S5 yesterday.  We looked at "My Verizon" and saw data usage of 470 MB on the summary, but the phone showed 14 MB.  I downloaded the data usage details, and they also showed 14 MB.  Today her summary shows 1556 MB, but the detailed data spreadsheet cells add up to 162.49 MB.  The phone is on wifi only.  What gives?  My wife has averaged around 200 MB per month for years.  Is this some kind of fraud?  We got my daughter a new IPhone and go nailed for a $10 data overage within a 24 hours.  There were two half-gig downloads, but there is no way to trace what they were, whether some kind of Apple-induced downloads or what.  Verizon customer service gave us an extra gig since the store failed to tell us that the data usage was pro-rated.  They also failed to tell my wife to set the phone to wifi only until all of the phone's little data-sucking default applications did their updates.  I was totally off contract with 5 phones, and just put 4 new little data-sucking piggy phones back on contract for two years for my family.  My own phone number 5 will not be with Verizon.  Unless they change their loan-shark practices on data charges, this will be my last contract with Verizon.  Their customer support folks are great, but I have a low tolerance for a billing system that cannot be audited for accuracy in data charges.

Regarding your second comment, you are dead-on correct.  My daughter's last plan was Virgin with unlimited data and 200 minutes of talk.  We failed to sit down together and go over the differences.  While I was ultimately responsible for explaining the need to turn off cellular coverage at home, I still feel the need to let my Verizon sales rep know to stress this to customers like us who have lived for years with unlimited data plans.
I am taking your advice and pulling the trigger on Republic tomorrow.  They have a referral plan that will give both me and my son $19 after the first payment period ends.  I appreciate your feedback!

  • Using iPhone's assisted GPS equals high data roaming fees?

    Consider the following setup:
I buy an simlock-free iPhone 3G S in Brussels, Belgium for €512. I purchase the TomTom navigational iPhone application on the App Store so that I don't have to rely on an expensive Belgian mobile provider to get continuous access to Google Maps. I use this iPhone with a standard voice+data plan.
Suppose I drive a 300 km south to Paris, France. I use my iPhone with the TomTom app to negotiate the Parisian roads.
Question: will the GPS unit of my (future) iPhone 3G S be able to find its position on its own without relying on a paid data connection? (even if it takes a while)

To answer your question, yes it will work. (Just may take more time to acquire sats, like a normal GPS.) Also, I just tried it by removing my SIM and turning off Wifi.
What Ian said is not quite correct. Assisted GPS does use the network connection and uses either the cell towers or wifi access points (Skyhook.com has more info) to locate you. It uses the SSID of these wifi networks whether or not they are password protected, but needs to exchange this data with Apple/skyhook to figure out where you are, and it does this over a network connection (or wifi, I believe.)

  • Promo data on share plan added mid month and data in the second half of the month is now double counted under promo AND non-promo.

This will make me pay for a higher data plan than necessary. Individual device totals add up to 5.5GB data yet the total usage on the plan is listed as 4GBpromo + 3.82GB = 7.82GB. What's the easiest way to go about getting this rectified?

Looks like the app DataMan Pro tracks usage by app.  Don't know anything about it but you could check the feedback in the app store to see if it might help identify the problem app(s).
