Odd iBook question - g4 board in a g3 case?

After dealing with another logic board failure on my iBook g3, I have reached the point of wondering if I should avoid the g3 boards entirely and go with an iBook g4 board this time.
Does anyone know if the logic board from a 12" iBook g4 will physically fit into the case of my 12" iBook g3? And what about all the other internal components, would they be compatible with a g4 board, or would they all have to be replaced as well?

After more than six years in the Apple iBook Discussions (anyone who was here before August 25, 2000 got that "join" date because of a Discussions software update), starting, myself, with a 300MHz Tangerine iBook and then a 500MHz Dual USB iBook and making approximately 10,000 posts in this Dual USB iBook "usage" forum here, I have never, ever heard of anyone who has successfully done that. If I were you, I would listen to Ronda's advice...

  • Continuation on my question "The board PC-LPM-16 , PCI-6032E , PCI-6033 are with conversion sample-hold ?

In my question I wanted to ask if such cards have a negligible ( not a null ) delay between a channel and another ( for istance 1/max rate of board also at slowly acquisitions ) .
Is it possible to know the delay of my cards and of the National Instr. cards in general ?

I will try to explain the interchannel delay of the 6032E, based on the parameters provided in the catalog 2002.
The maximum sampling speed of the board is for all of the channels. That means, if one channel is read, it can be sampled up to 100KS/s. If three channels are read, each one will be sampled at a maxium of 33.33 KS/s.
The delay among the samples for consecutive channels is constant, and it is the maximum speed of the board. For this case (pci-6032e), it is 10 us (microseconds) (1/100KS/s).
On the other hand, if you sample one single channel at 50KS/s, the delay among the samples will be 20 us.
If two channels are sampled at 20,000 samples per second, the first sample would take place in time 0s, the second would take place in 10 us, the third
(that is the second of the first channel would be in time 50 ns, the forth (second of second channel) in time 60 ns. Thus, the delay among samples of consecutive channels is always 10 ns, but the delay among consecutive samples of the same channel is defined by the specified sampling frequency. The delay between the sample of the last channel and the first channel is defined then by the sampling frequency and by the number of channels.
    Hope this information is helpful.

  • Question about water damage to upper case

    Hey everybody.
I recently sent in the MacBook that I got a year ago for repairs. Apple determined that there was water damage to the logic board, battery, and "top case,", which, while disappointing, was not altogether surprising since a few days earlier I had coughed a mouthful of water all over the computer.
Anyway, I'm resigned to replacing the logic board and battery (although not through Apple - too expensive!), but I'm curious as to what, exactly, water damage to the upper case (I'm assuming that's the same as the top case) would be. The upper case is simply the plastic area with the keyboard and trackpad, correct? If it's plastic ... how can there be water damage? Or, perhaps more importantly, if I replace the battery and logic board, will the water damage to the upper case prevent me from using the MacBook? I suppose the keyboard/trackpad could be affected, but is that necessarily the case?
I don't care if the computer looks pretty - I just want it to work. I can get the case for $50 off eBay; considering that the logic board will set me back $450, that's not THAT bad, but it's still $50 I'd rather, you know, spend on the logic board. Without which I am positive that my computer will not work.
Anyway, thanks for any input/help, and may you be luckier in the timing of your coughs than I.

The top case consists of the keyboard, trackpad, and power button. There is some electronic circuitry in there, which is likely what Apple was referring to as being damaged. I am not aware of such a "liquid sensor"....sounds more like a conspiracy theory to me. Liquid damage typically manifests itself as corrosion on the logic board, which is fairly easy to detect in a visual inspection. Other clues might be stains/discoloration from residue in the liquid, or perhaps the overwhelming smell of the beer.....
As to your second question, my understanding is that you voided your warranty when you got water on your computer. I do not believe that the warranty is "restored" after a non-warranty repair, although depending on your location, local laws may dictate something different.
The repair work specific to your current situation may be warrantied, but you should ask and find out for yourself. I don't believe you will be covered for any other potential future defects in the computer.
This is one reason why I typically don't buy into the whole extended warranty thing - especially for portable electronics. In the vast majority of cases, it's simply a cash cow for the party selling it. And since laptops are much more prone to accidents that would result in voided warranties, I personally feel the risk of losing the money you invest in an extended warranty is too high.
Now, if Apple offered a comprehensive replacement policy on their laptops(that covered accidents), I would most definitely consider investing in that kind of protection plan.

  • IBook questions from a total noob.

Well, greetings to all of you! I am the most proud owner of an iBook "Snow" Dual USB, 500 mhz, 320mb RAM, 10gb HDD. I won this on eBay 3 weeks ago for $15 with a supposedly dead HDD and since it was local there was no shipping charges! Since I'm actually using it to type this, the hard drive is in fact fine, a bit small but fine. There is no Airport Card, but I see from the antenna it is possible to put one in there. Anyway, my question has probably been asked a billion times, but from what I read nobody has an explanation just a simple "No". Obviously I want to upgrade the Hard Drive, BUT, if I'm going to be in there anyway I want to put a combo drive in. However, I've seen 700-900mhz Logic Boards on eBay, not cheap but not outrageous either. I want to swap out the old 500mhz one with a 700-900mhz replacement. The Form factor is the same, all the screw holes are identical, other then the possible display incompatibility I see no reason why it can't be done. Please, explain to me, in vast detail, why this cannot be done and cannot work. Other then the amount of time....I see no issues. Thank you for your' time, I look forward to the responses! =^)

See now we're getting somewhere, obviously there's more to it then just swapping out the Logic Board and having it just work. Yet apparently it can be done. Of course, it would seem to be more of an annoyance then it is worth, but I figured to try and squeeze a bit more juice from this apple...ha ha ha. I had figured if I was going to have it apart to put in a replacement Hard Drive, then why not just go ahead and go for the full monty, right? I suppose a stick of 512mb RAM and a larger, faster spinning hard drive will be all I'll be doing to this machine. The simple fact that I only paid $15 for the unit and $35.00 for the OS X 10.3 Panther CD's and it works has me thrilled, really! It is my first Apple computer and I love being able to mess around with it, but I'm quickly becoming aware of the severity of it's limitations. Many of the applications I see require either OS X 10.4 Tiger, or it'll work with Panther but I need a G4 800mhz cpu....etc, etc, etc. I guess it's hard to take on the world when one is only 3 feet tall, figuratively speaking. But I'm glad to have an Apple computer and I'm only sorry I wasted so much time with Windows PC's and that I shelled out for Crappy VISTA and went back to XP!!!! Grrr.

  • IBook G4 logic board repair

iBook G3 had a logicboard repair program
    http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
Many iBook G4 purchasers have the same problem and "Apple accepts fault for defective iBooks in Denmark"
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/09/21/brieflyipod_estimates_top_10m_ibook_payout_korean_iphonetalks.html
Can other customers expect any extention program for iBooks G4 bought since 2004?
    Thanks

Well that chip in question is on the logic board.
The steady deluge of complaints, and a subsequent investigation by the independent >lab Delta, led the Board to discover an easily repeatable flaw: a solder joint for >a mainboard chip would loosen with each press of the power button, invariably >causing a break in an important connection that would effectively kill the system
This is not the only bad solder connection on these boards. U28 is another one that has problems for example.

  • Ibook g4 logic board work around?

Newbie here and have read several threads on this topic.
I've got a ibook g4 late 2004 1.07ghz 14 inch display and it seems to have the logic board problem.
I've been doing some tests and here's something i've discovered for some of you who may have or are expierencing this problem:
    1. i can only install os 10.4 via cd. i tried 10.2, 9.2 and it won't boot off the cd. oddly enough, i tried this because i wanted to see if the fan would kick in or can be set to kick in earlier then the settings on os x 10.4. why? see # 3.
    2. I tried the typical hard drive format, disk utility check and ram / airport card removal same problem. I did this to eleminate a hardware malfunction on one of these devices.
    3. i started the ibook while it was completely stationary and powered it on with the battery. here's the catch...i set the power to "battery performance" and set the cpu to "reduced" in the option feature. Why? my theory is the heat from the logicboard gets to the point where the cpu or gpu move up and thus we get the typical freezing of the screen, lines on the screen, etc.
My findings were as I suspected. after setting the screen display to low lighting, cpu to reduced speed and running on best battery performance, i was able to use the ibook from 100% battery all the way down to 0%. This was using the ibook on the web strictly. When i ac powered it up and tried used several applications...boom....went to freeze.
At this point..the unit is noticeably warm. Keeps freezing. forget it. I wait for 6 hours then boot off the battery again. Take a guess...with the lowest performance settings i got to use the ibook up to 0% battery life.
Now, the big ? is if there is an application to reduce the cpu speed and set the fan settings to kick in earlier then what os x has preset for would be a great test to try. Also, a cooling pad for under the ibook or some method to keep it from getting to the trigger heat point is another option.
Any have any ideas on the last 2 options?

    Hi guys,
I have an ibookG4 1GHz with the approx 15 months until logic board becomes sick with the usual symptoms... (freezes, no boots, boots to screen w/ vertical colored lines, etc.)
I also took the beast apart and confirmed that the logic board was "touchy" by just touching it on the "top" side near the hard drive (where left hand would lay on the computer if you were using it). So, I tried taping a piece of corrugated cardboard between the bottom case and the metal shield. The symptoms actually got worse/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
Then I happened to read about the 2 mm playing card trick and tried it... son um a gun, it's been working fine now for hours/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic ___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-image s/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not -avail.png
The lesson seems to be that too thick is not good, a few playing cards seems to be just right/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
Also, I have another possible theory as too the origin of the problem....
I know that those little rubber feet seem to come off very easily. On my machine, I have lost all the feet EXCEPT the one on the battery. This situation would always cause the base of the laptop to be CONCAVE. Notice that the pressure that is applied by the "2 mm worth of cards trick" would then be counteracting the concaveness. In fact, anytime there is only a single rubber foot, or, only two feet that are next to each other (not diagonal), the base of the ibook will be forced concave.
Having three feet will cause CONVEXITY (possibly slight dipping down of the corner without the foot). Two feet diagonal to each other should also cause convexity (opposite corners should dip downward)
My predictions: people who have the logic board problem have only one rubber foot, or two feet that are not diagonal.
    Hey, I'm a scientist, I always have theories/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbssta tic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
    Good luck guys,
    Dean
PS. Let me know how wrong my theory is...

Put a logic board and new hard drive in g4 1.33 12inch ibook.  Trying to load tiger ,I get a folder with a question mark on the screen.  What does that mean ?

Is it 10.4.0? If so, it's too early to work.
Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new? It should include Mac OS X 10.4.2.

  • Questions on board change

I have questions on the motherboard change I'm about to do and obviously I'm amateur with this stuff so please bare  with me.  my question is I'm installing the MSI K7N2-l with AMD Athlon X.P. 2000+ Palomino core.
I was wondering when I switch motherboards can I put in my current hard drive with windows XP and just reinstall the current drivers for this new motherboard, or is there something else I need to do? I understand that before I remove the old motherboard I will need to uninstall any drivers or bios pertaining to that board before proceeding, is this correct?  Thank you for your patience any information would be greatly appreciated!
    Bill

It really depends on how much trouble just backing up critical data and doing a clean install is for you....I do recommend a clean install...but as you stated uninstalling any ide device, pci controllers and such will probably get you into a windows enviornment with the new board, but it is hard finding all previous registry entries....I would try a repair/ not a reinstall of the os from the XP cd itself.

  • PDF, iPad, and iBooks question

I seem to be able to import any PDF into itunes, but only certain ones will let me drag them onto my iPad for iBooks.  What are the restrictions that let me copy some but not others?

I can't answer your question directly but you might wish to try the (free) Adobe Reader app.  It's never given me any trouble.

  • Odd iBook G4 Boot Issue

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with my iBook G4 (14-inch, late 2004, 1.33GHz, 512MB RAM). The first stage of the problem occurred when I was getting a black screen with white lines across; I turned it off and on again, and then the computer wouldn't boot.
So after carefully moving it and setting it down on another flat surface, it would come back on again, and boot without issue. The iBook will stay on for most of the day, too- until I do one of two things:
    1. Plug in an external USB device- in this case, my external USB drive (notable: it uses the iBook as a power source, not its own).
    2. Move the comptuer around.
Then, the screen usually just switches to black pixels.
Interestingly, sometimes the computer will turn on- eventually- and oftentimes, it will boot right into OS X without issue; but it's rare, and usually it requires some sort of gentle physical movement (i.e: lifting it up and setting it down again) to have a chance. I have a feeling it's a logic board issue- something might have come unsoldered- but does anyone have a better theory?

Hi and welcome to the discussion forum,
This sounds like the classic GPU BGA problem. Especially the part about the lines on the display.
Search this forum for the shim fix. Eventually you could have it reballed, read all the posts about that esp. about the probability of killing the chip.

  • Ibook g3 logic board horror history

    Hi people,
I don't expect much of this post, I just want to let my history out so you would reconsider buying apple products in the future.
I'm a Mexico studend and got an ibook g3 almost three years ago (will be three years in january next year).
I really love the machine but I'm in my FIFTH logic board by now, and its starting to fail again with random lines in the screen (the same symptom again :-().
The first three times the logic board failed apple remplaced it free of charge under the logic board extension problem, every time taking like 3 or 4 weeks to do it (imagine 3 or 4 weeks without your machine and files :().
The four time I spoke to people in Apple Mexico and they didn't even wanted to replace the logic board, I was really ****** off but in the end they repaired the machine again free of charge, taking about two months in doing it.
Now the machine is failing again and I'll have to yield again on the phone to Apple México just to have the logic board fail in three or four months again when the extensions will have expired for me, and that if they even want to repair it again this time.
Everytime they asure me they are using apple original parts and that the logic board problem has been solved in the new boards, but yet and again the board fails again.
I'm really ****** off at Apple. Since I got the ibook I also got a Powerbook and iPod, but Apple would not see my money again, they make great products but they customer service *****.
Thanks for reading, it's good to let it out.

Hello, Juan Pablo. Welcome to Apple Discussions. (I think?)
This is a user-to-user forum, so nobody here can do much except offer advice.
You have violated the Terms of Use of Apple Discussions by, basically, only complaining, slamming Apple, and not asking for help, but I'm going to try to help you, anyway.
Have your iBook serial number and dates and details of past repairs at hand. Call Apple Public Relations in California at (408) 974-2042, and ask to speak to Customer Relations. Be prepared for a long wait on the phone, so don't get angrier about that.
Once you get Customer Relations on the line, explain to them that you have experienced the fifth logic board failure on your iBook and how long it has taken you to get it back each time it was sent away for repairs. Tell them you need a computer you can count on, and your iBook isn't getting the job done for you. Ask for a replacement computer. They have done this in the past in a few cases, and, in my opinion, your sad situation should qualify.

Keep the tone polite and disappointed, not angry, although I understand why you are. But the Customer Relations people, being only human, will respond better to a disappointed customer than an angry one.
To the other readers you are trying to warn, I say: this is not the usual case, and Apple cares about its customers. For every one person who posts here with problems, thousands of others are happily iBooking away with no problems whatsoever.
Even though you weren't really asking for help, I've tried to help you here. Please let us know how things go.

  • Odd CS4 Question

Well maybe not so odd... It seems that there are quite a few CS4 questions...
Anyway here we go. I just got Production Premium CS4 yesterday. I have been using CS3 for a while now. I have a HDV project that was started in CS3 and I installed CS4 and opened the project without any problems. It went through and re-conformed all the footage again but that was not a big deal. The wierd thing is that I cannot get my computer to recognize PPro CS4 as a program used to open my project. Let me see if I can explain it a little better. When I opened my project folder it showed the xxx.prproj file but is did not have a program associated with it, so I just opened up PPro CS4 and then selected the file and waited for everything to re-conform and then I saved the project. I thought that would have taken care of it. I looked back in the file and the xxx.prproj file still had no program associated with it. OK, so I go into properties and where is says "Opens with" I clicked on "Change" Went through my programs and found PPro CS4 and double click on it, only it does not put it in the list of programs to choose from. So I go thought it again and clik on Photoshop. It puts that in the list to choose from. Same goes for IE, or any other program that I click on but for some reason when I select PPro CS4 it does not put it in the list for me to be able to use that program to open that file.
Skip to today (all the above was yesterday). I open PPro CS4 this morning and select the project file and it has to go thorough all the files and re-conform everything again. It was not a big deal to me yesterday because I figured it was the first time opening it in the new program so OK, but now it is annoying because there are a lot of files and it takes a while to get it all done. I still cannot seem to get my computer to associate PPro CS4 with this file for some reason...
Any help would be greatly appreciate....
    FYI
    Windows XP Pro 64 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.5 GHz
    4 GB Ram
1 TB project drive (Only project on there)
    Thanks
    Phil

OK I got it to work... Man am I tired of messing with this thing...
What I did was the steps above that Bill Hunt pointed out, but when I got to the pproj file type I clicked on "Advanced" then from there I went to Actions and clicked on "New" then I just browsed for PProCS4 and you have to name the action so I named it Open.
Then I closed it down and right clicked on my project file and clicked on "Open With" then it magically allowed me to pick Premiere as the associated program. Everything is working just fine now...
Hopefully if anyone else has this problem this will help you out...
    Phil

  • Ahem 'New' iBook questions

Picked up my first Apple computer, a 466mhz Graphite iBook w/320mb RAM and that oh so roomy 10gb HD. And of course, I have a couple of questions:
This is my first experience with OS X and it came with 10.3 installed. In the interest of freeing up some HD space can I nuke the OS9 support that I'm finding in the application folders? Or is it vitally important for something and I should hang on to it for whatever reason? Currently i've got about 2.3gb free on the HD and would like to expand that a bit. I realize that changing out the HD in the future will be a major PITA if it comes to that. While I'm at anything else that can go? I got rid of iTunes, bluetooth support programs and Garageband because I have no use for them, but i'm not sure what else can be jettisoned.
Second, while the machine appears to be fully functional the graphite rubber colored bits, especially on the bottom of the machine are pretty chewed up. Is it possible to just find the 'skin' somewhere, remove the rest of the rubber with a gentle solvent and re-apply? I'm pretty sure this unit used to be used in an elementary school and it shows...

OS 9 isn't a necessity unless you need to run OS 9 applications. Otherwise you can delete these folders:
"System Folder" (not to be confused with the folder named "System.")
    "Applications (Mac OS 9)"
    "Documentation"
This might free up around 1 GB or so of space on the hard drive. However, a 10 GB hard drive is too small for OS X. 20 GBs would be the practical minimum. You need to have at least 8-10 GBs of free space on the hard drive, although it is possible to have as little as 3 GBs free but any less is a potential problem.
Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of RAM, but from a practical usage viewpoint 512 MBs is much better. 320 MBs is a practical minimum. Without a lot of RAM the OS will be slower and more sluggish.
Bear in mind that an iBook was not designed to run OS X, so don't expect great performance.

  • Thermal Paste Thermal Tape Question Logic Board

Howdy, I have a thermal paste question. Laptop in question: Powerbook G4 1.5ghz Bluetooth V 2.0. When installing the logic board, I know your're required to use the silver colored thermal paste on the main processor and it's heat sink. On the other chip however, ( I assume it's the video chip, it says Motorola on it), the original techs appear to have used something black, and it is thicker, and harder to remove and appears to be cut to size. My question is,...what is the black stuff used on the other processor with a copper heat sink? Is it black thermal tape, cut to size and if so, where do you buy it from? And do you apply a piece of tape on the video processor and on the copper heat sink? Or do you apply the thermal substance on only only one part either the video chip or the copper heat sink?

The Kapton tape is available on eBay. So are the spudgers, Apple's "black sticks."
    Thank you!!!
You helped me out in turn. I am endeavoring to restore my PowerBook to brand new condition (no scratches, no dings, nada) and that's the thing that's worrying me. The thermal paste issue. I never thought of it until I read your post.
Irony is that I'm helping you in the process of helping myself. And you've helped me out by pointing out that that paste is available at RadioShack. I will go buy that now.
(When I bought a bottom case on eBay, and then looked at iFixIt to see how to do it, I thought the thermal paste I already have would suffice. I have a tiny tube of it from a previous installation of a processor upgrade. Then after helping you with your posting, and then studying that picture, I realized that I may not have the right stuff and didn't want to touch a good logic board and the other innards just to have a scratch free bottom casing).
