Odd icon showed up on screen
hello
an icon has showed up on my desktop computer running osx 104.11
it looks like the old apple talk icon from os9 days, i think. it has a menu bar with the three top left buttons, but they are greyed out.
i can get rid of it, it just sits there, and, it sits in front of other open windows, docs, etc. its about 1/2" x 3/4" on my monitor. i have no idea where it came from, seems there is no way to get rid of it.
anyone familar with this?
thanks
wayne
anyone else had this?
I had this long ago but it derived from old OS9 files/icons I had on one of my internal hard drives.

IBook help, 10.2.8, icons showing up on screen.
My son has encountered a problem that started today. Every time he pushes the Command, Alt, Ctrl or Shift button, a white icon (about 1.5 inches squared) representing the key he just pushed shows up on the screen. It doesn't go away until the same key is pushed two more times.
Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it?
iBook
OS X.2.8
Thanks in advance.
scosioHi Steve!
I noticed that the iBook's Hard Drive is dangerously low on space.
18.62 GB Total Space
1.47 GB Free
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
Authored by Dr Smoke:
Problems From Insufficient RAM And Free Hard Disk Space

Have any routine Maintenance procedures as suggested in the articles linked to below, ever been utilized?
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance, authored by Kappy
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the iBook shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are not run in a timely manner.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:
sudo periodic daily
Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:
sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.2.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

My iPod touch will not turn on. I only have an apple icon showing on the screen.
My touch is only showing an apple icon. Will not do anything else.
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I can't see an app on my iphone, but when i search i get it. i've made room for the icon to show up on screen, but how do i actually get the icon to appear?
On your iPad, just go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, etc.>Add account>iCloud and put in the details of the account you set up. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.1. The apps I had previously installed are not showing on the screen. They are located in App Store icon. How do I move the icons so they are showing on the screen.
You can move apps around in iOS 7 the same as iOS 6. Press an app icon until you see it wiggle; then drag it to where ever you want it to be. Drag it onto another app to create a folder with the two apps. Tap the Home button to stop the wiggle.

My iPhone prompted me to download the latest version of iOS7. I did, and now my phone won't power on. It just shows an iTunes icon on a black screen. When I connect my phone to iTunes on my laptop, the only option it gives me is to restore my phone's factory settings. But won't this erase all my photos, contacts, etc? Any suggestions?
It's in recovery mode. You don't have a choice. You have to restore the phone. Anything that was on it is already gone.
If you've been backing up/syncing on a regular basis, you won't lose anything except what's changed since the last backup. -
I currently have 2 Iphone 4 s. Both are unlocked vervion from Apple. In the messaging app the camera icon shows but it does not show on the other. How can I get it to chow on both devices? Thanks in advance for your help.

If you can't update or restore your iOS device -
I have just downloaded ios7 to my iphone4. Now none of my apps are showing as icons on my home screen. What should I do? This didn't happen when I updated my iPad.
You may have transferred all your songs, but your iPad is seeing the library as a different entity.
The following article(s) may help you.
Moving your iTunes library to a new computer -
My ipad had an icon on it after being on the charger all night that indicated it needed to be plugged into itunes. I did this, and then it said it was going to do a restore, I confirmed I was ok and then left it on the computer all day and now the best I can do is get the apple icon on a blank screen. It occassionally changes to show that it has no battery and then goes back to the apple icon. How can I restore it? Any other ideas?
(A) Charge your battery
(B)Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
2. Connect USB cable to computer, leave the other end alone
3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad -
On my iPhone4, when I hit the Mail Icon I come up with a blank screen, though the Icon shows 182 unread emails waiting to be viewed. I uninstalled my mail accounts, and then re-installed them with no success. Other apps work fine

My iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.1 will randomly stop what I'm doing show a black screen then the spinning icon and then it shows my lockscreen. It takes about a minute to do this and it does it about 30 times a day. How do I fix this? It is EXTREMELY ANNOYING!
No, sounds like when you dropped it an cracked the screen it may have also damaged the logic board or the repair person damaged a cable.

My MacBook Pro speakers are stopped working and on screen volume icon shows in gray colour I am unable to change the volume.
Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Highlight Internal Speakers.
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
Try this even if you don’t see the red light.
3. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
Do this twice
4. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

Tried to update iPhone 5 to latest OS. When I looked at the phone a while later, the screen was dark except for the iTunes icon in the middle of the screen and another icon showing the charger cable and an arrow point to the iTunes icon. Now I'm bricked out of the phone. When I hold down the power button after the screen goes completely dark, the Apple logo appears, then the iTunes icon I described.
Hi Aphthonius,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you only see the "connect to iTunes" screen on your iPhone, this means that the device is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. The information and steps in this article can help further:
