Odd import/place behavior in InDesign CS4 (MAC)

Both myself and a coworker are having an intermittent issue when placing graphics in ID CS4. In a nutshell, using the Place command and placing a PSD file, ID is shrinking the image to a very small size - sometimes almost a dot. If the same image is just dragged in instead of using the Place command, it comes in correctly.
What's stranger is that it doesn't do this for every PSD file and has happened even on TIFF or EPS files, but it seems random. Nothing we've tried seems to do anything so we either drag/drop or we have to drag out a box.
Anyone have any ideas?

Are you using a pen tablet? Three of my coworkers are using tablets and are having the same problem as you. I'm using the mouse that came with my Mac and am not having the problem.

  • InDesign CS4 Mac starts but then freezes

    Indesign CS4 Mac starts up but freezes from there. Trying to open files or create new ones results in the filename appearing at the bottom of the Window drop-down menu, but the file doesnt appear on-screen.
    The same result occurs when opening files using "Open Recent File" as well as double-clicking the file in Finder or using "Open With" in FInder.
    It couldnt have picked a worse time to crap out - right in the middle of an urgent contract!! Dang Cleetus!!
    Any suggestions - apart from re-installing the program?

    Tried renaming InDesign Saved data and InDesign Defaults and restarting InDesign - that didnt seem to fix the problem -  after re-starting InDesign it seemed the program didnt write new versions of the files on re-start.
    Will head back to the office & connect to my 23" display & see if ID works OK with that - that would confirm that it's a screen pointing issue?
    Would re-installing ID help?

  • InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

    My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
    I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
    Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.  Lynn

    Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
    After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel.That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
    When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
    When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
    Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:

  • Indesign CS4 & Mac osx Lion Issue

    I migrated to Mac OSX Leo last week, I use Indesign CS4 6.0.6. Since then, I can not open my projects Indesign CS4 (indd): error code 4, file damaged. None of my projects can not be opened, every time I have the same error code.
    I downloaded the trial version of InDesign CS5 to test it, and actually open my projects well with CS5. If I export themas. IDML, at the time CS4 opens the file.
    I do not understand anything, anyone has a solution?

    I have Lion installed on my secondary computer, an iMac.
    I just tested opening a few files in CS4, and it works fine.
    You may need to reinstall CS4. But because you also installed the CS5 trial, you should uninstall that as well. To do this on a Mac, go to /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers and uninstall both CS4 and CS5.
    Then use your original install discs and install CS4 again.

  • Strange color swatch behavior in InDesign CS4

    I coedit a quarterly online newsletter using InDesign CS4 on my two Macs, a PowerBook and a Mac Book Pro. My coeditor uses InDesign CS4 on her PC.
    Lately something strange has started happening. We use a standard text color for hyperlinks (R=60 G=77 B=157). Two weeks ago, every time I applied the color swatch to the text, it took on a "wooly," three-dimensional look. I was using my PowerBook and swapped over to my Mac Book Pro, and all was well.
    In the next draft of the newsletter, on my Mac Book Pro I'm getting the same result as I did on my PowerBook. I've attached the draft in PDF format so you can see what I'm talking about; the effect is on page ten.
    I've tried fiddling with both the Swatches and Character panels to get rid of this effect, but so far nothing is working.
    Any suggestions?

    Unfortunately, uploading PDFs or anything else takes a good measure of time to pass through -- long enough to post a follow-up with an inline image, with this icon in the toolbar at the top of the reply box:
    Since you mention it's just the 'hyperlink' text, I don't think it's an unintentionally applied shadow effect, as that can't be done inline. And it's visible in the exported PDF as well, ruling out InDesign view quality settings.
    Perhaps there is something near the text frame that forces the text to be rasterized. Can you check with a Select All?
    I forgot: there's also a View Transparency Effects, or something to that effect. It's in the same panel as Separation Preview.

But, if I open it in InDesign CS2, it opens fine. I then take the ID CS2 file and reopen it in InDesign CS4 and it works. Though this maybe a good workaround, it isn't something I can be doing all the time, its way too time consuming. Does anyone have an idea what the problem is? Or, what I can do about it?
    As a note: I have also just upgraded my systems to Mac Pros and iMacs with Leopard on it.

    Thanks for the info. I have had this file opened in lower versions of CS with no issues. It seems like every few files this is happening to. All my current systems have two gigs of Ram.
    I was suspecting (dreading) that it may be a font conflict. I know the system fonts (dfonts) have been somewhat an issue in previous versions of CS, but I never had crashes to InDesign before because of font conflicts. I will try sorting through my fonts and breaking-up the file.

  • InDesign CS4 Mac upgrade (CS5 won't work)

    Does anyone know how or where I can get an upgrade license for Mac InDesign CS4 (from CS3)?
    I have the CS4 trial version installed, but when I click to purchase a license, it goes to CS5 page. I have a Macintosh G5 which is not supported by CS5.
    I contacted Adobe Customer Service via live chat and they were unable to help.  He kept saying to go to a reseller.  But everywhere I search, CS4 is out of stock (except for illegitimate crack software).
    CS5 can't save CS3 files, so I am having problems with people sending me files, and one client wants to use CS4-compatible InCopy.
    I would love to get CS5, but I really can't afford a new computer right now.  But I could afford a CS4 upgrade.  I can't believe there isn't someone at Adobe who could generate a legitimate Macintosh InDesign CS4 upgrade serial number and sell it to me.

    I have a standalone license for InDesign.
    Good point on upgrading.  Although, it really isn't what I wanted to hear.
    I use InDesign at home for some freelance work, but it isn't my primary job.  Uprading all my software every version would be a pretty big chunk of what I actually make on my freelance work, especially last year when the economy was in the tank.

  • I have a nasty crash log file on Indesign CS4 Mac

    I work on Mac OS 10.6.8, with Indesign CS4 V.6.06. I have a big corrupt file, 104 pages with lots of images. Recovery functions do not work. The file does not open and Indesign crash. So I can not export to IDML and then reimport in indd. I tried it on two different Mac, then Indesign V 9.0. Nothing works. I'm stuck. Does anyone have a solution or idea to offer me?

  • Indesign CS4 (mac) crashing on launch

    Hi,
    I wonder if anyone can help me.
    I've recently upgraded my operating system (tiger > snow leopard). Before doing this I uninstalled CS4 fully and after the upgrade reinstalled it again. Photoshop and Acrobat pro both work fine (I don't use illustrator so haven't installed it). Indesign however crashes as soon as it starts to load up: it bounces for around 10sec on the dashboard and then crashes.

    I've already tried several of the options for getting it to work. Have checked and mended my fonts, verified and repaired disk permissions, moved the indesign permissions files.
    I ran an update since installation when it wouldn't load up, so am now running 6.0.6 Indesign CS4.

    Quit InDesign if it is already running. Then clean the InDesign cache folder manually by moving the en_US folder from the following location: Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 6.0/. Drag the en_US folder to the desktop and relaunch InDesign. Paste a screenshot of the Sharing and Permissions panel by expanding it within the Get Info panel for the following folder:
    /Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist.
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Saved Application State/com.adobe.InDesign.savedState
    All the above folders and files should have read and write permissions for Admin and your current account.

    Yes, you are right, I am stuck for a different reason, it does places the second page.
    What I think is going on,  and maybe there is a better approach to it than the one I am going about it: when I have single page pdf for the 1st page and single page pdf for the 2nd page, my script first tries to upload 1st pdf as multi-page just in case there is only one pdf with both files. And for some reason it uploads single page pdf twice (into the second InDesign page as well when there is no second page in the 1st pdf [If I could avoid that all together would be great]). So my script verifies if the pdf uploaded into the 2nd page is 1st page of 1st pdf then it deletes it. And then it looks if there is a file for the second page, and uploads it. So my new challenge is that when it verifies what page of the pdf is uploaded into the 2nd page of InDesign after the 1st pdf upload, it just crashes, and it worked with the previous way of placing pdfs (the green line of the script).
    The second my issue is that, as it places the files, it dis-attaches the frames from the master page, and I need them to be still half attached. For the same reason new frames created by place command - is a problem for me. Maybe easier way, if it's possible at all, half-attach those new frames to the Master page afterwords. (This is the main goal for me).
    Here are both functions: to upload first pdf and second pdf:

  • Place .docx in InDesign cs4 isn't working

    I know I have to be missing something very silly but this is the second project I've had this problem.
    My instructor told us to place our Word docs rather than copy/paste.  I do have master pages with columns and text boxes laid out.  On the actual page where I want the text, I've done the ctrl-shift-click to activate the box...
    I tried to place my .docx and nothing shows up.  I don't get the changed cursor showing it "hanging" there either.  I tried choosing the text tool and getting the blinking cursor in the text box then using the place and it still doesn't work.  I've clicked off of everything just trying to get it to hang on the cursor but nothing.  What step am I missing?

    Just for clarity in case someone else searches for this answer, I didn't have any page breaks or big items on the document.  I hand typed the content and it was just a travel brochure with descriptions of trips.  I did check in the story editor as suggested and it was showing no text input even after all the attempts at placing.  I did check for the overset text as suggested and there wasn't any.
    I also turned off all the tracking and tried to place afterward with no success.  Finally, the downsave worked.

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

  • Hyperlinks on master pages not working after distilling (InDesign CS4)

    We have started using weblinks in the PDF versions of my print magazine.
    As PDFs exported in InDesign are bloated, we use this workflow for creating the PDF issues:
    Export print-ready PDFs of layouts in InDesign CS4 (Mac)
    Combine PDFs into a single file in Acrobat 9.5.1
    Crop pages and export combined PDF as PostScript file
    Distill PostScript file in Distiller 9.5.1 using default "Smallest File Size" (with Page Thumbnails) setting
    We hyperlink all web addresses in the body copy.
    We also hyperlink the magazine's website address on the primary master page (A). All of the other master pages in the magazine are based on A-Master.
    We create hyperlinks by selecting the link, using the New Hyperlink command in the Hyperlink panel, and uncheck the Shared Hyperlink option.
    When we export the layouts using InDesign – either using our printer's settings or InDesign's Smallest File Size setting – the links contained on the master page work.
    But these links disappear when our PostScript file is distilled into a PDF.
    I know there is a bug in CS5.5 that can cause this problem. But is there any workaround or solution for this in CS4?
