Odd issue w/ imap mail reading over EDGE network..

I've got my own mailserver at home (exim/cyrus) that is configured for SSL/TLS and works fine (w/ the iphone) via wifi.. However, if I have the iPhone talking on the Edge network (wifi disabled) and fire up the mail application, I'm unable to read messages.. However, I can get new mail counts & message headers from my imap server w/o any problems at all.. However, if I click on a single message, it says "loading..." and never is able to get the message body -- it can stay that way (loading) for a considerable amount of time (>20 minutes) and never throws an error. If it's capable of reading from the imap server for folders, message headers and whatnot, why can't it read message bodies? Doesn't make any sense. Any ideas?

Ok.. Good 'ol Murhpy's law I guess.. After I post about it not working, it just started working in the past 5 minutes.. All of the emails that I could NOT get loaded are now loading just fine.. Everything appears to be working now.. I'll keep an eye on it just in case it starts acting up again.. Go figure!

  • Outlook 2010 performance much slower than 2007 and 2003 when used with POP3 mail provider over slow network connection

When received messages include embedded pictures, Outlook 2010 does not persist those pictures in the .pst file with the message text.  Instead, it redownloads the pictures every time the message is rendered for viewing or printing.
Send/Receive to replicate a message with multiple embedded pictures from POP3 mail server (not Exchange server)
Select and view the message - notice all the x placeholders for the embedded pictures
Right-click any x placeholder and select to "download pictures"
After some delay, the pictures are rendered, replacing the placeholders, to form the complete message
Now, select "File" and "Print" -- notice that the preview is not immediately displayed.  There is a delay while thos same embedded pictures are downloaded, again.  Sometimes there will be a pop-up notification that Outlook is "communicating with
    the server"
Eventually the message is fully rendered with all embedded pictures
Now, select a different printer -- notice that the preview disappears and it takes time to .... yes, redownload those same pictures, again.
Finally, click on "Print" -- notice yet another delay for a final download to rerender the message for the printer.
Having done all that, close Outlook, disconnect from the network (turn off wireless or disconnect wire), open Outlook and view that same message.  The x placeholders are shown instead of the embedded pictures.  Although those embedded pictures
were downloaded multiple times already, they were not persisted locally.
Outlook 2003 and 2007 correct ask for confirmation to save the pictures locally then does so.  Printing and viewing is then possible without having to redownload those pictures.
Is there going to be a fix for this Outlook 2010 defect?   I've been waiting, applying updates, and waiting.....

Please do not close this thread.  The issue remains.  I apologize for not checking back sooner.  I thought I would get pinged by email when this tread was updated;  I did not.  I'll monitor more closely in the future.
First, please note that I explicitly set Outlook to NOT download pictures automatically.  I want to be prompted to download.  However, after confirmed that I want the download, I expect pictures related to the message to be downloaded only once,
immediately after I confirm that I want them downloaded.
I have confirmed many times that the behavior in this area is NOT identical between 2003, 2007 and 2010.  In particular, 2007 does download once and store locally (if user confirms to save changes when prompted), as expected, and 2010 downloads each
    view/preview/print.
This is quite easy to verify -- simply unplug any network cable, disable wireless, etc.  In other words completely detach from the networked world.  2007 will correctly view/preview/etc. from local storage whereas 2010 always reverts to showing
placeholders for any embedded images.  This is 100% repeatable.
As an additional verification, simply move the .pst file to another system that is not connected to any network.  Open the .pst file with 2007 and any embedded images that were already downloaded (and saved) are there, with 2010 they are not.
With 2010, it is bad enough that embedded images are not saved for viewing when disconnected.  Worse than that, the repeated downloads can be a significant disruption to performance.  Just get on a really slow wireless connection as is typical
in some hotels.  Then try to view and print messages with lots of embedded pictures.  Slow takes on a whole new, even slower, meaning.
This 2010 defect has been reproduced.  Is there a KB article, Windows Update, hotfix,.... anything available to eliminate this problem of repeated downloads of embedded pictures?

  • Can't send or receive e-mail on EDGE network

Just recently I can't send or receive e-mail on the EDGE network - both work fine on WIFI though.
Safari and all other features work fine on EDGE and WIFI so it's an e-mail issue. I am using an IMAP account, no SSL, Incoming port 143, Outgoing port 587. After trying to connect for some time, sometimes I get a "cannot connect to server" message but usually no message at all.
I would really appreciate some advice

Am in Olympia WA for the holiday - I live in San Diego - I agree started two days ago. I spent 3 hours with Apple Support - they conferenced in ATT and they were no help. Eventually - I did a restore and did not change a thing. Am using 1.1.2.
Something happened late monday as it was fine sat - mon night. Since I do not live in WA - I assume things will be OK when I return to CA. Giving ATT a call might help - but you will definately need to get it escalated to a higher level.
I have sent this forum link to the great apple T3 support person that spent so much time with me - hopefully he will forward on to ATT and it will get resolved for all of you. Something did change on Monday night.

  • Can't send email over EDGE from hosted gmail domain. Works fine over WIFI

I'm trying to send email from my google apps hosted doman over EDGE network.
I'm using port 587, SSL, authentication: password.
Works fine over WIFI but edge network rejects it every time.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I'm running into the exact same issue. However, I am running my own mail server and not going through Gmail. On wi-fi, everything works fine. On Edge, I receive the error message indicating that the server is not responding, unable to connect to server, etc. I spoke to Apple support and they just walked me through the settings and said that they did not know what was wrong and suspected there is something wrong with the phone and wanted me to take it to the retail store to have them look at it and possibly send it in for repair. When I spoke to ATT they said that they are not experiencing any disruptions in the Edge network and that they also suspect it is the phone. I personally do not believe it is a defective phone. I upgraded my phone a couple of days ago the 1.1.2 firmware and within 24 hours later I started having this problem. I also tried setting up a connection to my .mac account and experienced the exact same thing there, so I know it is not isolated to my mail server. Funny thing is, I can access the internet over the Edge network just fine, so this has something to do with either the mail ports being blocked somehow within the Edge network or has to do something with the Mail Application on the iPhone which is not recognizing or not able to connect through the establised Edge connection. Maybe there is some sort of firewall on the iPhone that is blocking those ports? If anyone from Apple or ATT is listening, please investigate! I do not want to mail my phone in for repair when it is a perfectly good phone and may be able to be fixed with another firmware update.

  • Has anyone had a problem connecting to Edge network?

Got my phone yesterday and it worked flawlessly. I drained the battery and charged it over night.
So I wake up today and try to see what the weather is going to be. It says error updating, so Im like w t f? So I try to open a webpage(using edge) and it doesn't load google and the iPhone says "Safari can't open the page because it an't fid the server."
Has anyone had this issue? Could it be the Edge network or my phone its self? I used the WiFi just now and it worked fine but I need edge to be working.
    Thanks

When it happens to me a have to do a reset of the iphone and it fixes it. Hold down the top button and the round button on the buttom of the screen together for 10 seconds until the iphone powers off. Next hold down the power buttong for a second or 2 untill you get the apple logo on the screen.
    Must be a bug.

  • Why does photoshop no longer save over my network

I have recently purchased 2 mac minis as retouching stations.
    -running 10.10.2
-other computer and host computer on 10.9.5
-running a mix of CS5, CS6, and CC
all of our systems can, over a network, access a raid, grab a file, work on it and hit save
the 2 yosemite stations get permission errors.
Yes the permissions are set correctly everywhere. this is only an issue with tees 2 new stations, out of seven.
I read about it all over, a serious damper in our work flow as a catalog house...
Adobe seems to have wiped it's hands of it.
Has anybody found a solution, I have read formatting my RAID to EXfat can solve it, but that it a not very reliable platform
    Anybody?
    Thanks

What protocol are you using? AFP or SMB?
Truth be told, there have always been issues saving files from Photoshop over a network share point. It works some times, with some Photoshop and OS X versions, and in others it doesn't work, due to permissions or other errors. The relatively foolproof way to work is to edit and save everything local, and then copy files to the network drive when you're done working on them, rather than continually saving over a network share.

  • Can not send mail over Edge

My boss has an original iPhone and I am constantly having problems keeping his e-mail functioning properly.
The latest issue is he can not send e-mail over the Edge network. I visited the AT&T support page, and they say to contact Apple for support.
Here is the message I get when attempting to send mail:
"Cannot send mail. One of the recipient addresses was invalid."
It is a POP account that works fine when sending mail over a wi-fi network. I have our smtp settings for our pop mail entered in his account as the main smtp server. There is also an additional server named AT&T SMTP Server.
When trying to send mail over the Edge network, I turn off the wi-fi access to force it to use the AT&T smtp server (cwmx.com) and every time I get the above error message.
I have another boss here with an identical iPhone and email settings that has no issues. The problem phone was brought to the local Apple Store and had the sim chip replaced, other than that they have no idea what is wrong.

  • IMAP issues in Lion Mail.app?

Hello...I've been dealing with a snarky email issue with Lion Mail.app for several months. The issue is that Lion Mail does not have the same email counts as the corresponding web mail server for that account shows, either grand total, or folder by folder.
Snow Leopard Mail, and Tiger Mail DO agree with the web server, and Thunderbird 8.0 installed in Lion does agree exactly with web mail.
Based on these observations, a lot of testing, and several deleting of email accounts and re-setting them up again, my feeling is that there is something wrong with Lion Mail.app's ability to handle IMAP
I certainly do like the Mail.app and it's my first choice, but I need to see an accurate view of my mail. Lion's Mail simply isn't giving it to me.
Any thoughts from those who've had an experience like this with Lion Mail.app? If you've had this problem and fixed it, how DID you fix it?
    Thank you,
    ray

  • IMAP-Mail sender adapter handling with read messages in mailbox

    Hi,
    (PI 7.0)
    we have a "funny" situation:
We are using imap-mail-sender adapter polling a mailbox.
Sometimes there are read messages in mailbox so the adapter cannot read these messages.
When we sort all read messages and we mark e.g. the second message in list as not read, the adapter polls fetch the first (already read) message and afterwards the not-read message and afterwards no other message is read.
I think this behaviour is wrong because pi should not handle an already read meassage.
    Does anybody know this problem?
Or is it a problem of the mail-server (Exchange 2003)?
    Thanx and regards
    Wolfgang

    Hi,
    thanx for your answer.
The default behaviour of imap is "only fetching unread message" (s. FAQ of mail adapter)...
The mail sender channel with IMAP4 fetches only the unread messages from the specified mail box in the order they are stored. Therefore, please make sure that you have some unread messages in the top of the list (if ordered by most recent on top). After a polling cycle, you can look at the status of this channel at the adapter's monitor. This should show any error if the messages are not processed correctly. Once the messages are read but not processed correctly, they remain in the mail box but are not read in the subsequent polling cycle. You must correct the problem and delete these messages using your mail client program or reset them as unread so that they can be resend.
In our example the adapter fetchs read messages too (till the first unread one)  - and this is wrong (i think so!?).
But I dont know if its a MS-Exchange problem.
    Regards
    Wolfgang

  • IMAP mail arrives as "read"

Why does my IMAP mail arrive without the blue dot, denoting a "unread" message?

    greaser5,
If you open or even preview a message on either the iPhone, or MacBook Pro, or for that matter any other computer or device accessing that IMAP account, the message will be marked as read on all of them.
IMAP updates the status of the message via the server to all email programs or devices that are accessing that mailbox.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Odd problem with IMAP Email

Hi all, I have set up various email accounts with Google, Outlook. They work fine. However, I do have an odd issue when I have my laptop up and running which also gets notifications of my email.
Both my phone (BlackBerry Z30) and KMail are set up to use IMAP to get my emails from Google. When I receive an email, both laptop and phone get the notification, great. However, my phone will get another notification as well, in essence I get two notifications per email I get.
If I refresh the Hub on the phone, it will sort itself out. If the laptop is off, I get the normal single notification. I can get three notifications for one email, one on laptop, two on phone. It can get a little annoying at times when I get an influx of emails suddenly.
Does anyone have any clues as to why this is happening?
    Vasilis

Mail considers two messages to be the same if they have the same body but different headers. The header contains information such as the date and sender. The default behavior is to group duplicate messages and show them as a single message. See this support article for instructions to view the duplicates.
Mail counts a group of duplicates as one message for the purpose of showing the number of messages in a mailbox. As a result, you may get different results when counting messages in Mail and in another mail client, such as webmail.
If you prefer to disable the grouping of duplicates, see below.
    Quit Mail.
Back up all data before continuing.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
defaults write -app Mail _AlwaysShowDuplicates YES
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
To revert to the default behavior, enter this command in the same way:
    defaults delete -app Mail _AlwaysShowDuplicates

  • Low system memory issue - caused by Mail?

While I was at work, my wife was using our iMac at home, and she said that a weird error dialog appeared this afternoon that asked her to quit applications, following which the system became unresponsive.
When I came home I found that a lot of running applications were in a hung state (unresponsive and required a Force Quit) so I rebooted the iMac.
I looked in the Console and saw that at 15:39:37 today two errors started repeating at an enormous rate - something like 5000 times per second for the next 5 seconds:
      12/02/2015 15:39:36.373 Mail[226]: *** Assertion failure in -[MCSocket readBytes:maxLength:error:], /SourceCache/Mail/Mail-2070.6/MailCore/Networking/MCSocket.m:469
12/02/2015 15:39:36.381 Mail[226]: exception parsing IMAP response: trying to read/write concurrently
...then at 15:39:42 the rate suddenly decreases to only about 10 errors per second. This continued for a further 15 minutes, until at 15:55:22:
      12/02/2015 15:55:22.000 kernel[0]: low swap: suspending pid 226 (Mail)
      12/02/2015 15:55:22.590 loginwindow[797]: -[ProcessPanel(lowMem) initAsLoMemPanel] | Lo-Memory panel initializing
...then lots of errors like this:
      12/02/2015 15:55:23.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 999 [com.apple.MailSe]
      12/02/2015 15:55:24.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 1000 [com.apple.InputM]
      12/02/2015 15:55:25.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 269 [com.apple.intern]
So it looks to me like the Mail app went haywire, the Mac ran low on memory, so OS X made some kind of "Lo-Memory panel" appear to handle it.
A quick search in Google Images revealed that there is such a thing as an OS X low memory error - the exact text of which is "Your system has run out of application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using". It displays a list of running apps so you can quit them. The error looks something like this:
        http://i.imgur.com/HDplIwv.jpg
When I showed this picture to my wife she said that is exactly what she saw.
I will report this to Apple on their feedback page. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know. Obviously something that can bring down the entire system like this is not good.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Nokia E72 IMAP mail problems

    Cross posted from here: http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?p=680673#post680673
Yeah, E72 e-mail client needs real work if it wants to be a competitor with iPhone 3GS (two of which I own) and Blackberry.
So far, I found these problems with it:
    1. The e-mail client should be able to display all IMAP folders. Currently there is no option to do that. This is a major functionality problem. In fact, displaying all folders available on the IMAP server should be the default. Instead, the client offers the folders that don't exist at all - silly choice indeed (for instance, I get a choice to see "Sent Items", which doesn't exist on any of my IMAP servers).
    2. If large number of IMAP folders is selected, e-mail client won't work any more (becomes frozen for lengthy periods of time) and may even corrupt mailbox setup (in my case, it renamed two of my mailboxes to the same name - it just called them Email). Note, it didn't corrupt my mail - it corrupted mailbox setup on the phone. Essentially, mail doesn't work after large number of folders have been subscribed to. The client keeps connecting/disconnecting and eventually gives up.
    3. There is no selection for sent folder. This is a critical feature for any IMAP client. It would be nice if drafts could be selected too, but that's not critical.
    4. IMAP IDLE is not implemented properly. There are a number of selections as to when to poll the IMAP server, but that is not proper push e-mail support. There should be an option for the client to keep the connection open all the time and reopen it if/when it goes down. Currently, it is impossible to have "always on" IMAP IDLE support. Which then means that e-mail delivered to IMAP server will not be picked up by the phone for many minutes.
    5. Email, if configured, should start when the phone is rebooted. As of now, it doesn't, which means that even if one configures polling for e-mail and the phone is rebooted, the mail will not be picked up.
My Nokia E72 is E72-2, software version 021.024.237.02.
PS. Can someone smack Nokia Australia support people around the ears for replying with utter nonsense to customers' questions, please? It's annoying when real bugs get reported and people that have no idea what the problem is (let alone the solution) reply with garbage.

Hi all what a  nice discussion on e 72 issues and I hope Nokia developers also work like users.
I have 5 e mail accounts configured g mail, yahoo, hotmail, ovi and my company account which is  gmail apps . Except for gmail nothing seems to work .
First of all for email to be successful like BB push mail should work automatically . That is whenever one gets connected to net mails should down load as per parameters set . This is not happening .
Secondly i still do not know why mails do not download on  manual mode also when you go to" send receive now "..I have noticed that mails do come into some of my  accounts when I am  connected to the net and simultaneously mail is being sent . I have tested this more than once in my office . Otherwise push mail does not work . This seems to be  a serious bug .This means push mail is a flop. Further there seems to be some peculiar issue with yahoo mail .This is an issue I have for a long time . I also feel after a while whole thing gets coorupted and perhas this is the reason why e mail system stops working .
Thirdly and most annoying thing are  the messages which keep pooping asking for password for different e mail account .Any one else having same issue ?
High nokia advises customers as to what they have done and what can be expected out of this system . If nokia mail system fails they will loose lot of ground to BB and apple and they can not survive selling only voice/message phones at exorbitant prices .

    Hello.
I had question to all emial client user's:
Why use mail client over web site mail inteface?

Is there any option to backup/compress your mail in mutt or thunderbird?

Do you use header caching? It can accelerate remote imap access, but is disabled by default. Also playing with imap_idle (yes, if server supports), imap_keepalive (low) and timeout (high) may produce nice results.
i've tried everything (always caching, and setting various imap_* options).  trust me.  it's funny, it wasn't bad at first, then one day i'd hit j/k and 3 seconds later the indicator would move... that's when i set up offlineimap.
I'm very happy with this maildir setup now .  thanks anyway tho.
OMG, mutt is flying right now! Even with header and message cache is mutt + imap not the fastest. I reccomend offlineimap for everyone.
