Odd? Lost my early year photos after Rebuild?

This is very odd.
I've NEVER had problems with iPhoto or Apple Software.
Most of the time it's my fault.
I'm totally up to date on all system and software from Apple.
I avoid that Rebuild Thumbnail Warning that pops up too often.
But once in awhile I feel guilty and Run Rebuild Thumbnails.
Well I did run it yesterday and Today I am missing all my
photo's from 2002, 2003 and some from 2004.
I'm sure their in the Originals file and I do have a backup,
but WHAT A PAIN?
I am positive this problem stemmed from running the Apple
Rebuild Thumbnail request.
Any easy work arounds?
I still have a month of Non-Backuped Photo's that I have
to secure before futzing around...
Need advice,
Thanks in advance, Tom

You know the story of the chicken and the egg...
Yes, I'm sure my Data Base got corrupted by implementing the "Rebuild Thumbnails" feature.
I'm inclined to think that you got the message because there was corruption. The Rebuild Thumbnails message is not a feature as such, but a something that turns up when iPhoto detects a problem. As to what caused the corruption, well there are many possibilities - including any interruption while the app is writing to the database file (by a crash, or a power outage, for instance), hard disk issues etc.
Fortunately, I do have a total copy of my iPhoto Library with only 600 photo's not updated.
Let me confirm: You have a back up that's missing the 600 most recent imports? If so:
Go to the Pictures / iPhoto Library Folder /Originals folder. In there you will find the pictures in Rolls. It will be easy to track down the most recent rolls, which will contain the 600 pics. Drag those rolls out to the desktop.
Now, from your back up, restore the iPhoto Library Folder from your back up and trash the damaged one. (Here's a tip: Put it in the trash but don't empty the trash until we have everything working) Then, when you've got your back up working and in place, drag the roll folders from the desktop to the iPhoto Window where iPhoto will import them.
That's you back up and running.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Finally, on the subject of iPhoto Diet: I do NOT recommend it, and have seen it cause problems, which is why I asked.

Downgrading an iOS is not supported by Apple but that would not bring the items back anyway.
What photos are you talking about?  If they were synced to the iPod then you will have to get them from the computer from which they were synced.  If the photos were taken by or saved to the iPod then they should be in the backup.  The same with notes.
One the computr go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and look at the da and time of the iPod backup.  If it corresponds to before the update was performed or at the beginning of the update then the itmes should be in the backup.  Restore theiPod from backup.  Make sure thatyou have auto syning turned off other wise when ou connect the iPod to the computer iTunes will backup the iPod which does not have the items and delete the old backup.  To turn off, go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that say Prevent iPods.... syncing.

  • Lost some of my photos after upgrading, though I can still see the previews.

My 2.66 intel core i5 IMAC recently had a HD crash.  Fortuneatly I had a 2T western external HD set up as a time machine.  The local Apple reseller checked the HD and had it replaced.  When I got my PC back I noticed it had the newer operating system and the newer ilife 11. I attached the time machine and began a restore.  All seemed to go well.  When I opened iPhoto for the first time, I was prompted to have the library upgraded for the newer software which I did.  Then when I went into iPhoto to check my pics.  Everything seemed ok until I opened my last import to see that even though I could preview all my pics, I could only open about 20 percent of them.  The rest displayed a large grey exclamation point.  What has happened and how can I recover these pics?  I am now thinking I should keep raw copies of all my photos (have about 40,000), is there a way to export all the raw pics from iphoto without doing each one seperately?
Been a big Apple fan for many years and trying not to let this change my opinion.

Try all options except for the thumbnails.  If that fails:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I lost all of my photos after downloading the update! Please help!!

My entire iphoto library is empty; all my photos (thousands of my child's first two years) are gone - this happened after I downloaded the new update last night. Has this happened to anyone else?  Please tell me you know how I can get them back!?

Just in case you don't see my responses before I sign off....
That Masters folder should have all of your pictures...the actual files...assuming you've used iPhoto all along and are letting it manage the photo locations.  I'd suggest copying that folder elsewhere.   Better yet just copy the whole "iPhoto Library" thing.
After that check out this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2638
That shows how to run iPhoto to repair the library.  Worst case if that doesnt work is to create a new library and reimport your photos from the copy you made.  You'll lose all of the tags, etc. you might have put on photos but the most important part...the actual photos...should be good.

  • Please Help - I have lost 6 months of photos after a HD failure

Hi - my Hard Disk on my MacBook Pro died on me a few days ago. I have had it replaced and was lucky enough to have a Time Machine backup of my laptop. EXCEPT when I launch iPhoto, the only library it can find is from February!!!
Does anyone know what might have happened? I can;t find a newer library anywhere - including from the Tie Machine backup.
    Have I lost my photos?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the reply Larry.
As I had to Time Machine restore my entire HD, iPhoto included, I don't know if it as checked prior to my crash or not. When I opened up iPhoto (after the TM restore on my new HD) I was immediately asked to locate the library. For whcih I could only find one dated Feb 08.
Havin check the prefs, the library is definitely a managed one as the box is checked yet this may well be a default setting. So I suspect, unless anyone else can suggest otherwise, that I must have had a referenced library and TM has not obviously saved ANY reference alias'.

  • IPhoto Library Manager hasn't managed to find missing photos after rebuild

I'm trying to repair what I assume is my pal's corrupted iPhoto Library. There are over 8000 images in the Originals folder, which is the number of photos expected to be in iPhoto but he suddenly discovered there were only 1200.
Having tried to rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager it is still only showing 1200 photos and I therefore wondered whether anyone can recommend any other solutions for trying to recover the missing photos?
As always, any help most appreciated
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

Did you try to rebuild with iPhoto with "Find orphans" option selected? If that doesn't work you'll have to start over with a new library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

  • Lost iPhoto access to photos after Leopard upgrade

After upgrading to Leopard, I had access to iPhoto 6.06 as before. But, then I had to do the workaround to re-establish my user account as Administrator, so as to install the Software Updates that showed up over the weekend.
That worked, but now iPhoto opens and just spins its circle as it tries to access the iPhoto Library. I've tried every solution posed on the boards, and none worked.
The images do open in Preview when accessed from Finder. When I try to add a web image to iPhoto, I now get a message that Safari cannot communicate with iPhoto.
Solutions tried: made sure all user accounts had read/write rights to the folders; ditto iPhoto.app; repaired permissions; even opened Garage Band and saved a file as 'Test' (opening and saving a file worked for a couple of posters); downloaded the iPhoto rebuild utility, but it couldn't access the iPhoto app; could not get iPhoto to offer to rebuild the library with Option/Command startup.
If I upgrade to iLife '08, will this problem go away? Or, has Leopard done something irreparable beyond the application itself? Has anyone heard if Apple is working on a patch for this? Mine is not the only computer affected: there are several others complaining on this and in the Leopard Topics area.
Model and OS below and current.
    Thanks for any help.

    Bruce
Upgrading to v7 won't solve the issue. The problem doesn't sound like it's with the application but rather with the Library.
    Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
If that fails, Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Lost ability to edit photos after latest update

Hi,  I have just applied the latest update to my installation of Aperture.  Upon opening it also upgraded my library to the newer version.  Was this was completed I am able to browse and view all the photos in my library however if I try to do anything with any of them I am unable to.  For example I am unable to duplicate a photo graph as the option in the menu to do this is greyed out.  Like wise if I try to adjust the photo again all the adjustment panel options are greyed out.  This is very frustrating and any help would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    BV

You may be in "Preview" mode. Then all edits are disabled. Type "P"; that toggles quick preview mode on and off.
Or press the "Quick Preview" icon, the "hurried rectangle" as Kirby Krieger once called it
Or do you see broken arrows, indicating missing original master files, on your image thumbnails? In that case you need to use the "File > Locate Referenced Files" menu command to reconnect the image versions to their original (master image) files.
    Regards
    Léonie
    BTW:
I have just applied the latest update
I assume you are working with Aperture 3.3.1. In that case the MacOS X in your signature canot be correct.

  • Lost all my photos after back up & reinstall-PLS HELP

    Hello There,
i have a very serious problem, the problem is as below:
    - my system was having a problem so I was asked by apple store guy in Zürich to reinstall my OS
    - everything in iphoto was fine before that
    - after reinstall, the following problems started:
    a) photos thumbnails didnt enlarge & only a black circle with "!" mark came up. Videos dont play at all.
    b) the photos stopped syncing to my iphone or ipad
    c) even after rebuilding the iphoto library database (as adviced by genius bar guy), the problem didnt go away.
    d) this problem also happened with the new photos imported into iphotos from my camera/sd card or iphone
    e) the guys at the genius bar had no idea about this problem.
Now genius bar found out that my hard disk had a problem so they asked me to back up & reinstall my OS (snow leopard) for the 3rd time so they could change my hard disk
I did this, got my hard disk replaced & now I am restoring my system from time machine. I have the following problems.
    - all the photos imported after this problem started didnt seem to have been backed up by time machine so they are simply missing.
    - my old hard disk has been destroyed by genius bar so I have no back up any sort of my photos.
i have been going to the apple store about 5-6 time over 6 months now & they offer no solution except telling me too bad for me that I lost my family & children photos. All was fine until genius bar guy told me to back up & reinstall my system. I had requested him to help me out the very first time during the back up & reinstall but they have always told me they have only 20 mins for every client so I have to do it myself.
I am very sad at the moment. I have lost all my photos including work & my children since they were born. its very serious for me & i am totally depressed at the moment.
is there a way to recover the photos & videos?? I have read a lot of your forums & even tried iphoto library manager.
this is a desperate cry for help!!! this is my first mac & i now start to regret the day i bought it.

I just updated 3gs with ios5, using a pc.  Photos and videos are not showing up in camera roll, In tunes the capacity bar of colors showed nothing in video or photo, but lots of memory in yello part of bar named other. I suspected that this was all my photos and videos.
Downloaded this windows browser, worked for me.
    http://iphonefolders.com/
It opens iphone like windows explorer.
The pics and videos were located in DCIM folder.
    Got back pics and videos.
Hope this works for anyone else.

  • Lost all my photos after updating iOS8

    Hi,
Before updating to the new iOS8 I backed up my phone to iCloud (including photos).
After the update I have lost ALL of my photos. I tried to erase all content on my phone and start again, but still no luck.
Any ideas on how to get my photos back?
    Thanks

Your photos are still on your phone.  With iOS 8 there is no My Photo Stream or Camera Roll any more.  The MPS has been replaced with the Recent Activity album.
The CR is replaced by the Collections mode.  The closest we can get to the Camera Roll is to turn off the Summarize Photos feature in the Settings/Photos & Camera pane and view the photos in the Collections/Moments window.
The photos will be in chronological order when scrolled up from the bottom of the window.
More on how to find your photo in iOS 8 is described in this Apple document: Get help finding your Photos in iOS 8
The Recent Activity album is showing the photos added in the last 30 days going back to 8/20 (today being 9/18).  In iPhoto on a Mac the My Photo Stream is showing more like 31 days, 8/19 to today, 8/20. It must be how the two devices calculate the last 30 days.
WARNING:  If you use iTunes to sync photos between your iPhone or iPad and your Mac do not activate the iCloud Drive. Doing so will kill the capability of using iTunes to sync with your mobile device and disable Documents & Data syncing for your iCloud account on OS X Mavericks and earlier Macs, as well as iOS 7 and earlier devices.

  • Has anybody lost imported photos after upgrading to Lion? (iphoto11)

Has anybody lost imported photos after upgrading to Lion? (iphoto11)

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I lost all of my photos and videos after download of iOS 5? how do I get them back?

So I updated to OS 5 last night an low and behold I lost all of my photos and videos? how do I get them back, I did do my download on my mac book pro. I would have thought that all of that stuff would have transferred automatic during the download of 5, but I guess that would make too much sense? So how do I get that stuff back?

I did the same thing last night also with my MacBook Pro.  None of my music, video or photos not taken originally on my iphone were  reloaded back onto my phone.  I received an error message instead.  I had to just re-drag the music and videos that I wanted back to my iphone.  As far as my photos taken on my iphone...by chance, I had just backed those up earlier that day.  I'm not sure where the photos are that I had put on my iphone in the beginning...they still show up in people's contacts, but they no longer show up under photos - ?  This is very frustrating!
