Odd MBP slow downs

I'm experiencing some odd behavior from my MBP. It's a new 13" and it's been fine since I got it, but the last week or so when I run anything really processor intensive (usually games) it starts to behave strangely. My son was playing EA's Spore and the mouse started responding sluggishly, jumping around the screen instead of tracking smoothly. I tried it with some Steam games--CS:Source and Civ4:BTS--with similar problems. Despite the new graphics update, my fps in CS:Source was below 15, where it used to be locked in at 30. Civ4:BTS was very sluggish and the slow performance tends to follow me out of the game. I was typing in a forum and the keystrokes were going so slowly that some didn't register.
I tried creating a new user to test it out and the behavior continued.
When this is happening the machine seems to be heating unevenly--growing especially hot on the left (as I face it) side.
Any thoughts?

I tried again today. No dice. Steam still hasn't gotten back to me. I noticed that my game played fine for about 20 seconds when I tested it today, but as soon as the fan came on, the sound cut out, and shortly after that, everything became unplayable.
I tried non-steam games today as well. Starcraft II on moderate settings wasn't as bad as Half Life 2, but it crawled, even in the menus. That seems to imply that this is a video card or video card software issue to me.
Once again, the left side felt like it was on fire, while the right seemed perfectly cool.
Are you sure you didn't update your mac with the latest graphics update? It was a mac update, not a steam update.
I've got a 500gb 7200rpm HDD. I don't know if it's a seagate, but whatever comes standard in the new MBPs is what I've got.

  • Why does my MBP slow down throughout the day?

If I reboot my MBP it will run very fast, nice and zippy.  But as the hours go on it seems to slow down to a crawl.  I am noticing this in particualr in PS where I can run a program called Portraiture (for example) that will run almost instantly after a reboot and then hours later will take as much as 25 or 30 seconds to run.
The only thing that I have noticed is it does seem to correspond (possibly) with an external hard drive I attach to it frequently.  I did this morning again and noticed it starting to slow shortly after.  Ejecting the disk and unplugging it doesn't help, but ejecting it, unplugging and rebooting does help.  (Though I don't kow if it is just the reboot that is helping and not neccesarily the disk)  This ext HD is one that was used with my PC and is now being used to transfer files from the old PC to the new Mac.  Could this be the problem?  Have you ever heard of this being an issue?
I just used a tool called the band aid tool- this is something that is used for retouching.  When using this tool it is typically instant but just now it took about 45 seconds for it to do it's job.  I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing only 2% memory usage at the time.
This seems a bit odd to me.
    MBP, Lion, 2.3GHZ, 8GB RAM.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Why on earth is my (fairly new) mbp slowing down

I purchased 15" mbp last September... am running 10.6.6
it's always slowing dow now..  and I get that **** color wheel that spins and spins...  and while it's spinning I can't switch apps or do anything else.. this really drives me nuts -- and ****** me off..  didn't expect this malfunction from a machine that cost me as much as this one did...  :-(
machine has 4GB RAM...  I have done the disk permission thing, it fixes problem somewhat, but doesn't last long, after just a day or two the color wheel is back..  one time it got fixed with the sw update, but that also didn't last more than a week.. this *****..  what is causing this malfunction please...  I thought after I switched from pc to mac I wouldn't have to deal with this kind of problem any more..  ha...  I guess the joke's on me....

thank you all for your responses..   I restarted after I posted this..   and then everything was cool again..  of course it's nothing but a good old memory problem....;-)  I now use the Activity Monitor, I have it in dock and open it all the time to monitor memory usage..  before I was just keeping apps open for ever, always had lots of apps open (including Photosop and Adobe Bridge...  Firefox also consumes a lot if you have lots of tabs open..) I had just thought that 4GB of memory was more than it was, I guess..  I had a pc before I purchased this MBP, also with 4GB of memory, and as far as I remember it never slowed down like this..  (but well, it was a Vista machine, and god knows I had so many other problems w/it..  it was a total nightmare....;-)
so I gues now I just manage the memory situation better and it seems ok...  if I had known this I would have purchased the MBP with 8GB of memory (sometimes I use Photoshop extensively, for days.. something I haven't done yet since last restart...  so situation seems fine for now...;-)
I also wanted to ask, can anybody recommend where I can buy the best/cheapest memory online?  (it's cheaper online, yes?)  unfortunately my MBP comes with two chips of 2GB instead of one of 4GB (why do they do this??)  so I have to buy two chips of 4GB...   it's a 15" MBP running 10.6.8, was purchased last September....
and to person who mentioned the Desktop clutter issue:  I'm very adamant about not keeping clutter and junk on the Desktop..  I even have a little app called TinkerTool (that of course I found out about here..;-) that I use to config sys so screenshots land in a folder of my choosing inside Documents folder....
    thank you very much...

  • Early 2011 MBP Slowing Down

Hello, I have an early 2011 MBP (15-inch), system report below:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh SSD
Graphics: HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Lately, my MBP has been slowing down a lot.
I  tested out a bunch of flash sites, but it does not seem to be the problem. Like I said, I have 16gb of RAM (combined with what I have located above, i7, etc), and have had numerous  flash sites up, but no slowdown. The problem is recent, in that I've noticed it in the past 6 months. Nothing changed in that period at all to cause this problem.
I've run this setup for a couple years without issue (SSD where the DVD player used to be, and the HDD where the old HDD was located), without issue.
My MBP gets so hot that I have to move it frequently for scare of erythema eb igne (stupid technical term, but I might not be joking, and would rather not joke around about something like that.but seriously it get that hot where your only option is to shut off the MBP.  I know that might sound extreme. But my MBP gets that hot. Especially if you are running a program like Premiere. I understand the power and RAM that it takes to run a program like that, but it was shocking. This is a program (Premiere) I ran without problems previously..
Checking activity monitor (and iStat), RAM does not seem to be the issue. CPU seems fine 88-90% usage,
Usually have 7-8GB of RAM available, and the CPU usage under 90%.
I have no idea, but I will be taking a can of compressed air to the MBP.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas or had similar situations to help me out?
    Thank You,
    T

  • MBP slowed down and crashes

Hello, I have MacBook pro Mid 2012. After update to Mavericks, my laptop really slowed down, started crashing, lagging, especially Safari, Launchpad have lags, in general video performace is bad, also Activity Monitor shows that browser takes 100% CPU, temperatures are higher in comparison to Mountain Lion.
Resetting SMC, PRAM and reinstall don't help.

OK, so I booted OS X Recovery and Disk Utility - according to it, everything is fine.

You can see some of it (it's from Safari, but for example Launchpad is even worse). It's like that all the time in Safe Mode. I don't know if that's normal.
And I did SMC reset again, but it also didn't help.
Oh and apps often crash when I first start them, but then, I repeat action and they open.
Funny story, Mavericks should improve performance, better video memory and ram, but I'm experiencing completely different story.

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

If a reboot is clearing some of the problem, you ought to check the capacity and use of your hard disk. How full is this? Anything less than about 20% space may begin to slow things down.
As for the Flash plugin, these do tend to slow Macs down with some sites. You might want to try Click to Flash to restrict the use. And as for CPU use, I saw 120% on a friend's MacBook Pro a couple of days back: too many Facebook games running at the same time.

  • MBP...slowing down?

Last september, I bought a new MacBook Pro intel core duo, 1gb ram. I was very impressed with the computer. However, recently, Ive noticed everything is starting to slow down. Application load time is increasing, dashboard is slow. I get that rainbow constantly and the internet seems to be REALLY slow.

    Hi Mark,
If I were you at this point, I would backup, and do an Archive and Install, or Clean Install, to get your MBP in factory condition.
Other then that, do you run any utilities to keep things clean?
    http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/11582
Are you looking at Activity Monitor in Applications-Utilities to see if some process is running in background? Have you performed all the latest software and firmware updates? Have you Repaired Permissions?

  • MBP keeps slowing down after some uptime

I bought my MBP less than a month ago, and after about two days of uptime it starts to slow down dramatically. Apps become unresponsive and/or respond too slowly and performance as a whole is very bad.
I'm running Lion on the 13'' Core i5 with 4 gigs of RAM. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Friends of mine who have older MBPs get great performance even after much longer uptimes (like a week on end).

  • MBP CORE DUO 1.83GHZ SLOWING DOWN

Hello everybody I have noticed that my MBP with 1.5 Gig of Ram is slowing down: I'm geting a lot of spinning wheels, and I'm experiencing an annoying delay of 1 sec when I click to open a folder and the actual opening...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Perhaps you could first try repairing permissions and restarting (if you have not tried it yet).
If that does not fix, then you could look at other options.
Here is how you repair permissions:

  • MBP 15" Late 2013 slow down to freeze

    Hi,
my brandnew MBP will slow down 2 to 3 times a day. It seems there is one or more Prozesses using huge CPU-Time, but i can't open Activity Monitor or a Terminal Window. The only way out is to push the Powerbutton to off and restart my Mac. Any idea somebody?

    UPDATE
Today it freezes after 27 min rendering a movie with 95 °C Prozessor Heat!
Google Chrome is now deleted and i will see.

  • Preview app freezing and slowing down MBP

Since I updated to OS Mavericks my preview app has not been functioning properly. When the app is open when viewing PDFs a window (accompanied by a progress bar) pops up quite frequently that says "Saving changes... '#' documents remaining", with the # sign representing any number of documets. Often, the number of documents "remaining to be saved" progressively increases from 1 to 8 or so, despite there being only one document open. While the app is doing these "auto saves" my computer is slowed down significantly and while these interuptions occur I am usually unable to do anything else.
I will also add that the size of the PDF files that I view are rather large, on average 70-80 MB, although I'm not sure if that is the reason for the issue because before I updated to Mavericks I didn't have this problem. And the problem does also seem to occur with smaller sized files as well.
My computer usage is usually minimal when this occurs, typically only Safari is open in the background. I was advised to reset my SMC, which I did, but the problem is still occurring. Any additional advice or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Update: The Preview app is using a lot of memory and I don't know why.
With activity monitor on, I notice that the memory usage for the app spikes considerably when viewing PDFs, especially when I scroll, exactly the same problem as you, loveceratops. When a PDF is initially openend, the activity monitor shows memory usage around 50 MB, but when I scroll within the PDF the memory usage shoots all the way up to 500 or 600 MB. It's at this point that the glitches preciptating in Preview begin to occur.
I've tried deleting/recreating the preview app's ".plist" files in the "Preferences" and "Containers" folders, but that has not solved the issue. I want to try to reinstall Preview, and I just might, but I'm also considering reinstalling OS Mavericks since that may be easier; but I'm concerned that the same problem would still keep happening since I'd be recovering all my files from Time Machine after the reinstall.
Any help solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. This is a very frustrating problem.

  • Is it possible to upgrade Oct 2013 MBP-r SSD how much before it slows down?

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if its possible for Apple to upgrade the SSD in my macbook pro retina oct 2013 model,
I sorely wish that I had gone for the 256GB model really, I purchased applecare, so I don't want to void my warranty - besides, googling around I found out that there are no aftermarket upgrades available for it anyways.
I have set time machine backup to backup manually (is this okay?, I Don't tend to make mistakes of emptying unwanted stuff in the trash, or is it likely ill need to use it for more than this?)
Also, coming from PC's ive always noticed a considerable drop in performance once a drive starts getting alot of data, how much roughly does it take to slow down an SSD, is it the same as a spinny drive? Im still pretty new to OS X, first mac and first SSD and im panicking ive made a serious mistake purchasing such a small drive.
Thanks alot for your patience, I did have a search but im not brilliant at searching lol
    Alex

Information for offloading data onto medium-speed and fast external disks:
Standard disks on Thunderbolt connectors are a waste of money (limited by the rotating disk speed at ~100 MB/s).  Standard disks on USB 3.0 run just as fast as on Thunderbolt.  You can use an external Seagate 1 TB hybrid SSHD to run at the maximum USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt speeds when accessing the 8 GB SSD cache.

  • Why did Mavericks slow down my MBP?

Did some digging in Discussions and found that a slow-down problem is common after installing Mavericks.
EtreCheck was recommended as a diagnostic first step. I have  a report but I am not confident to act on any items without advice. Here it is - help appreciated.

Anything in Startup Items could be a problem. Apple declared Startup Items to be obsolete in 2006 so this is software that hasn't been updated since before then or they are following the doing the don't-update-until-it-breaks plan.
I suggest uninstalling these problems to see if that fixes things. Always use the vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never try to do it manually. That could only make things worse. You may need to download a new installer that may come with an uninstaller. Unfortunately, installers, and especially uninstallers, are a weak point of OS X compared to Windows.
    Launch Daemons:
              [System] com.adobe.versioncueCS3.plist 3rd-Party support link
              [invalid] com.bjango.istatlocaldaemon.plist
              [System] com.sassafras.KeyAccess.plist 3rd-Party support link
Remove these too. iStat seems to have an invalid plist file. KeyAccess has a support link that may eventually lead you to an uninstaller.
    Launch Agents:
              [System] com.bjango.istatlocal.plist 3rd-Party support link
Notice a trend? This is why I say to use vendor-provided uninstallers.

Some of the same software is here. At least with Login Items, you can remove items very easily and put them back later if they prove innocent.
