Odd open with behavior

Hi,
Normally, when right-clicking a file, for example, a pdf, in ID, and selecting a particular program to open that file with (say, AI) would start the chosen program.  Lately, things haven't been working as expected, at least in one document.  Opening a linked file, either with the right-click on the file or from the links dock, results in some really odd behavior, all ending with the wrong program being chosen.  Sometimes, the program is in the list, for whatever reason ID decides that it should be in the list, which is a mystery to me, but sometimes, the program isn't even in the list.  Such as, my GIS program. I've tried another document, and it seems to behave ok.  I tried restarting the computer, etc., still happens.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for the time; you folks are always a tremendous help.
PS, if I go to Bridge, everything is smooth, like butter.
db

I'm using CS4, all up to date on a Windows XP SP3 machine dual-core 2.66ghz  4gig RAM, 500 Gig HD.  The document itself is pretty low-key.  Five placed Word files.  I'm zapping the embedded images and replacing with linked originals.  Very basic graphics.  I'm an archaeologist, so mainly maps and photos, no transparencies, fancy masks, or anything of the like.
Thanks,

  • Group Policy For 2008 Terminal Server Users Default Open With Not Working

I'm trying to change the default open with behavior for jpg files on my terminal server. I created a Group Policy that changed it to MS Paint to Office 2010 Picture Manager. The policy appears to apply correctly but jpg files still open in
Paint. When a user is logged on, if they look at the properties of a jpg, it shows Photo Gallery as the program to open it but when opened, it opens in Paint.
Has anyone seen this behavior before?

  • How do I change the download behavior so that the "save as" radio button is selected by default instead of "open with" in the download window?

For most file types whose download behavior is set to "always ask" the "save as" option is selected by default in the download window. However, for a few others the "open with" option is selected instead.
Note that Firefox is not automatically opening some files instead of saving them. I still get to choose between saving or opening them, but certain file types start with "open" selected whereas for others "save" is the default.
What I'm looking for is a way to change all file types to default to "save as" in the download window.

  • Question about behavior of "Open With" from Finder Menu

When I highlight a pdf and go to "Open With" I get the following (default is Preview--only see one of those):
    Acrobat Reader 5.0
    Acrobat Reader 5.0
    Adobe Reader 9.1.3
    Adobe Reader 9.1.3
    Adobe Reader 9.0.0
    Adobe Reader 8.1.2
    QuickTime
    QuickTime
    Safari
    Safari
The only Reader I have in Applications is the 9.1.3. I've put those older versions in the Trash for now.
And I don't understand, also, why I'm seeing doubles of the same 9.1.3, the same Acrobat, the same QT, and the same Safari.
I've restarted the computer, dumped the Finder .plist as well as cleared "Recent Applications." No change.

You can find the locations of any reference to these applications
by using Find in a search. Their path will appear and you will
know where they exist. In some cases, older versions of a utility
or some part of an application were brought into the system by
another installer, so they may be in an unchecked folder.
{You also should be able to choose Preview to see & read .PDFs.
Of course, there are certain Acrobat-authored documents which
    do not work as well in Preview as they do in Adobe's reader app.}
There is a newer version of Acrobat (reader) available for D/L
and it has been recommended due to known security issues.
Also, other Adobe updates for flash player are available.
You also could use an alias of the Reader and drop the file on it
to have a .pdf open on demand with the correct (or desired) app.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Odd problems with Spry features

I have finished a site at
    http://www.magnoliaparkburbank.org
that uses many Spry features such as autosuggest, master-detail
regions and css classes built into the xml files. The site has been
developed on a Mac but I have a BrowserCam account with remote
access so I can test the site on multiple platforms and browsers.
My client is reporting odd behavior on some of the features.
Particularly problematic is the store directory section. When the
user clicks on "Neighborhood Directory" a pop up window opens with
an html page that is mostly Spry driven. The client is reporting
problems in the select menu (not all categories showing up) I have
worked hard on the autosuggest feature with the help of Donald and
Kinblas. The auto-suggest seems to work sometimes and not at other
times. The user is supposed to be able to type the complete store
name or part of the store name to see the address and phone number
of that particular store. If the user wants to search again he
clicks the search again and the fields are cleared. Sometimes
things just seems to get stuck. There is also a problem in some
browsers (Firefox) that does not allow the user to return to the
parent window. I am looking for some feedback, suggestions and/or
advice on the useability of this site. This is all complicated by
the fact that the bulk of the site is in Flash including the call
to open the browser window for the store directory.
Thank you so much for any help!

    Hi Marlene,
The close window problem is due to the IE hack
window.opener='x' that you have in the href of your close window
link. If you are trying to figure out how to prevent IE from
prompting the user to see if it is ok to close the window
programatically, do a net search on "window.opener='x'" and you'll
see some pages that discuss a way of using openWindow to trick IE
into not prompting the user based on the window name ... I believe
the discussion centers around how that also works for other
    browsers like FF, etc.
Regarding your auto-suggest problems, we'll need specifics
from you as to what isn't working properly, what browser and
platform, and what your expectations are in specific situations.
For example what is your expectation when your user types in
    "siren" and hits return? etc.

  • How can you get your homage address to open when you open new tabs? My homepage is Google, but my new tabs always open with Yahoo.

On my old computer, all my tabs always opened to what my homepage was set to: iGoogle. Now with my new computer, my homepage is set, but all new tabs open with Yahoo! I've tried looking at tab setting but don't see a place to set it. Help!

The behavior that you have is not the default Firefox behavior, which always opens a blank tab. You will have an add-on that is causing this. Check for any Yahoo related add-ons to see if they have this option. The freeze net assistant add-on is another one that opens Yahoo in a new tab.
There are add-ons that allow you to specify what should appear on a new tab, but these may conflict with the add-on that is opening Yahoo.
    * NewTabURL - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl
    * New Tab Homepage - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage
Another way of opening the home page in a new tab is to middle click on the home button in the navigation toolbar.

  • Removing obsolete file type associations from "Open With" menu

Ever since I removed VMWare Fusion 3.x from my system, I've been unable to remove the Bootcamp file type associations that it created. For example, if I right-click on a PDF and choose Open With, this is a partial list of what I see:
    Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)
Adobe Distiller (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Fireworks CS4
Adobe Fireworks CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Illustrator CS4
Adobe Illustrator (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
...and on and on and on. 17 additional entries for Fusion for PDS's alone. This junk is driving me crazy.
I've tried rebuilding the Launch Services database with MacPilot and Onyx (the recommended fix that I've found on the web), but the entries still are there even after restarting Finder and rebooting my iMac. I'm at a loss to figure out how to get rid of these.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

They are stored in the LaunchServices database. You can give this a try, but no guarantees. If you no longer use VM Fusion then I suggest following the information below on uninstalling software.
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
    Press RETURN.
Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Open browser behavior does not work properly

I have quite a few websites in subfolders to my root website.  I have tried using the open browser behavior to open a smaller resized html page in two of these subfolders.  When I apply this behavior it causes about 20 windows to open up of this page.
However, I have another subfolder where the behavivor works perfectly.
What could be causing this error.  All these websites are created with templates.  Maybe this has something to do with it.
A quick second question.  I use ico files to have an image in the url.  Everything I have read and the way I used to get this to work was to put these images in the root level.  However, using template, they have to be put in the templates folders to work.  I don't remember have I came to discover this.  Why is this?
I really would like some input to the open browser behaviror problem.  Any help will be appreciated.
    Joe

It's hard to say what the problem could ber without seeing the page in question. Could you post a link to a live page?
The actual .dwt template (if it's being used correctly) is only used by DW, you do not need to upload it to your actual web server or place your .ico file within it. You may have a link in the head section of your template that is pointing to the .ico file within the wrong folder, and that could be causing the issue.

  • Database connection dailog opens with missing fields

    Greetings all,
I have one user who has a couple reports that do not display all the fields in the database connection dialog box when she attempts to refresh the data in a report.
Normally this dialog box opens with the Datasource, UserID (of the last person who saved data with the report) and Database prefilled, so only the Password needs to be completed or the UserID changed.
For her (and this is only happening on a couple reports), only the Datasource text box is visible. The datasource is correctly filled in but in order to see the other fields, she needs to click the next button and then click back. Then all three fields - UserID, Password and Database need to be entered.
This only started in the past couple months and so far is only occuring with 2 reports, both new. Other new reports are acting normally.
We are using Crystal Reports XI with the latest service packs. Our reports are in a shared folder on the network. So far I have not been able to duplicate this behavior on anyone else' machine.
Any idea's on what might be causing this or how to correct it?
    TIA,
    Bob

I would check that persons database client and/or version of MDAC. May also be a permission issue on tables.

  • Odd keyboard shift behavior

Just recently I have ran into an odd problem with my keyboard.  I have a macbook pro 3,1.  All my keys work individually, but when I go to shift and make any of the letters "q,w,e,r,t,y,u,i, or o," capital letters it will not let me.  Any quick fixes?  My other shift key will allow it, its just the left shift that acts weird.  Thanks!

    Hey John,
Well what seemed to be solved now isn't.  I continue to have the problem and I've figured out how to reproduce it:
    Open an HTML file.
Open a CSS file in a separate tab.
Edit something in either file, then switch to the other one.
Hold down the <Shift> key and press the right or left <Arrorw> key to highlight a line.
The entire document will be highlighted and you will be unable to scroll up or down without highlighting the document.  It doesn't seem to happen on XP anymore, but it does on Vista, and Windows 7.
Thanks for working out the details and reporting it here. I have fixed that bug for the next release. From what I remember, the edits in Step #3 have to be done in a particular order to cause the problem.
Here are a couple ways to workaround it:
    1. If you want the CSS files in a separate Tab, then you may want to disable the Related Files feature in Preferences > General
    2. I think it depends on how you switch from 1 file to the other, and clicking with the mouse in the file you want to have the focus resets the focus.

  • Odd Calc Order Behavior

    Hello all,
I've put together a hybrid analysis cube and I'm experiencing some odd calc order behavior. It appears the years are calculating backwards.
I load my 2007 end balances and calc forward three years. 2008 is correct, but 2009 and 2010 are incorrect. They are incorrect inasmuch as the calcs that require 2008/2009 end balances are incorrect. So I run the script again and now 2009 is right, but 2010 is incorrect. Then I run it once more and 2010 is correct.
It appears the end balances for 2008 and 2009 aren't available for 2009 and 2010, respectively. Thus, I think 2010 is calcing first, but with no 2009 end bals, so it's off. Then 2009 goes, again no end bals, so it's off. Then 2008 calcs, and since 2007 end bals are in there, it's calcing correctly. Thus, I have to calc again two times for 2009 and 2010 to be correct.
    Here's my script:
    Fix (@IRSiblings("2008"),"ScenarioMbr")
    CALC ALL EXCEPT DIM("Years","Scenario");
    Endfix
ScenarioMbr is a level 0 descendant of the Scenario dimension.
Thanks for any help anyone has.

I would suggest checking on your outline order. It sounds like your ending balance hasn't been calculated by the time the beginning balance needs it (as evidenced by your three passes). The order of members in your FIX statement has no bearing on the calculation order. By this, I mean make sure that your Years dimension is ordered as follows...
    Years
    + 2007
    + 2008
    + 2009
    + 2010
Also, make sure that your periods (where your months are is, assuming it is a different dimension) is located above your Years dimension.
Lastly, how are you facilitating getting your Ending balances into your Beginning balances? Sometimes the sequencing for this type of work is improtant as well. For example, if your Ending Balance is a two-pass, it will not be ready until a second pass is done.
IF this doesn't help, maybe provide one of the BegBal members that isn't working, your outline order, the order of the Years dimension, and the dense/sparse settings (assuming BSO).
    Good Luck!!

  • Odd Junk Mail Behavior

I've been experiencing odd Junk Mail behavior on my Mac; I've got the Mail app set so it puts the emails it thinks is Junk in the Junk folder. I do this because I've noticed that certain legitimate emails keep ending up in the Junk folder automatically.
I've also noticed that some of the emails in the Junk folder have not actually been flagged as Junk Mail, they were not colored brown by the Junk Mail rule and there is no button available to tell Mail it's not Junk. How do I stop Mail from flagging something as Junk when it doesn't seem to tag it as Junk but it still ends up in the Junk folder?
I see emails tagged as Junk in the Junk folder that are legit, so I click the "Not Junk" button and move them back to the proper mail folder. But the next time I get mail from the same source, it gets flagged and tagged as Junk again. I thought the Mail app learns from the training we give it. How do I resolve this situation?
I've already set the Junk filtering to not filter emails from recipients who are in my Address Book.

Either you’ve messed with the Preferences > Junk Mail > Advanced settings, or those settings have become corrupt, or you have one or more rules that have a bearing on this.
Assuming it isn’t the latter, try this:
    1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, disable junk mail filtering, then enable it again. This resets the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
    2. Choose either Training or Automatic mode (it doesn’t matter) and leave the other options checked. Click Advanced to see how the junk filter rule is defined now if you want, but don’t touch anything there.
    3. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).

  • GDM no more "open with" menu after last Gnome upgrade (3.16.0)

    Hi,
Using nautilus, I used to have an "open with" menu showing a list of alternative applications to open a file, such as in this picture:
    https://ubuntugenius.files.wordpress.co … .png?w=500
This was quite handy as I could use different applications to open the same type of file without changing the default association each time I use an alternative application.
Since I have updated my system, Gnome has been upgraded and now there is only an "open with another application" entry in the "right click menu", which, if I use it, change the default application for the type of the selected file.
The list of alternative applications is still the same as before, but the behaviour is now different, since these application do not appear directly in the menu any more, and since selecting any of them will change the default file-application association. For me, this is a bit annoying since I wants to use two different applications to open the same type of file.
I could not find anything on the internet related to this vanishing of the "open with" menu.
I am curious to know if anybody has the same problem as me. I wonder if it is a feature or if there is a problem somewhere?

That behavior of nautilus seems to be a new "feature". I really have no idea why they change such things.

  • Bridge CC Missing Features from CS6, i.e. 'Open With'

    Using CC - Windows 7, 64bit.
First of all - I am curious as if there is a way to set additional options for the "Open With" option when Right-Clicking on an Item? For example in previous versions of Bridge, I was able to right click on a PDF that would need to be opened in Photoshop or Illustrator and select that as an option as opposed to opening in the default Acrobat Reader. In CC, I am forced to leave Bridge, go into the application, and Open the file through the system dialog box. It's a function I didn't realize how often I used until I updgraded to CC - now I am forced to go through a timely hunt for the file through the servers instead of just being able to open it via Bridge. The current options to 'Open With' are Acrobat are available, also offers Adobe Reader, and Chrome as options - but none of the necessary options.
I realize I could drag and drop it - and at times this is appropriate - but often not.
Is there a way to activate or achieve this?
Secondly, and I have researched this some already but wanted to confirm - there is no way to create a PDF inside of Bridge anymore? I have installed the Output Module successfully, however the option to create the a PDF is still not there. Is this correct, or should the ability to create a mulit-page PDF be in the Output Module I installed? If so, where is it now located?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Best,
    Adam

In CC, I am forced to leave Bridge, go into the application, and Open the file through the system dialog box.
That is not normal behavior (at least on my Mac I still have all installed applications as option under this menu). By default the open with menu under the righty mouse menu should show all installed applications on your system. It sometimes even shows them double in case of attached disks with back up etc.
This has not changed in Bridge CC. If you have those applications installed on your system at the same location as Bridge they should show.
First try a reset of preferences for Bridge with holding down control key while restarting Bridge and choose rest preferences from the provided menu.
