Odd PAL Transition Occurrence

Authored a DVD in NTSC (based in Canada) with main menu, series of sub-menus and then video footage activated from the sub-menus. Pretty basic stuff. Worked out fine when put to disk and presents well on TV.
However, when trying to make a PAL version of the same content with the same layout, an interesting 'glitch' of some sort occurs. In Simulator mode, everything appears fine in the main menu. Then, when I make a selection, the displayed images gets squished vertically, the transition occurs and then it's back to the full screen for the sub-menu. Selecting the options available from there, the same thing happens. Squat screen, transition, then regular screen.
Any thoughts?
I should note that I have not burned this PAL version to DVD, so I don't know how it well presents on TV. Perhpas I should have done that before posting this. Sorry.

How did you make the PAL version of the DVDSP project? Did you start it from scratch or copy the NTSC project and remove all the NTSC video assets?
Also, what type of transition are you using? is it a built in DVDSP transition or a video asset you have assigned yourself?
it sounds like you've copied the NTSC project and changed it to being PAL and thought the menus have been resized correctly the transition has got screwed up. You could go through and remove the transition (select Not Set). Then go back in and set it up again, that might sort it out.

  • Transitions stopped working

Odd my transitions in DVDSP just stopped working. I go to preview the Disc and any of the transitions I pick just go from the menu to white to the clip. Even the pre installed ones?
any thoughts... I have version 4.2.1

Tried that but same result,  here are some screen shots of it greyed out.

  • Another battery expansion... How bad is this?

I was using my faithful MacBook Pro 17" to watch a 1080p video on my 42" LCD television, when I noticed that book was lifting up awkwardly. I turned it over and was startled to see the battery bulging from the laptop.
At first I was startled and turned the system off, then proceeded to remove the battery. I googled for similar situations and found it was more common than I would have expected.
It is a few few years old (I think it's an '08) model. What steps should or can I take regarding this situation; Is this covered by Apple or will I have to "bite the bullet" here and buy a new battery?

Has this really happened? Having spoken with multiple "Authorized Apple" technicians, I'm told that this is an isolated issue that is usually replaced after a phone call to Apple. Well, I've phoned Apple after being sent BY Apple to these technicians.
The result? I was told about all the customers that got free batteries for the same exact problem. In fact, I was told they were outside of their warranty period, AND did not require extended "AppleCare" due to the nature of this odd and rare occurrence. Furthermore, I was told that these batteries were replaced within three years from the date of purchase.
My laptop is NOT older than three years.
My laptop has been in the repair shop within the last few months already, and now my "laptop" cannot even leave the proximity of its power cord.
I think I may be beginning to lose faith in the Apple brand.

  • I'm in the market for the new Mac Pro.

I'm in the market for the new Mac Pro. I've been waiting for it to be released and have some cash set aside for this. I am a video editor and use Premiere Pro CC, and After Effects. My primary content is simple documentary films - so nothing too intense, but always HD (1080) video. I don't see 4k in my future but it's always a possibility so I want to future-proof my purchase for the next 3 years or so. With respect to storage space and RAM, I can make that decision myself based mostly on cashflow (since they are likely both user-expandable). However, with the basic configuration of the number of cores and video graphics card, I could use some advice. I think they are both set for the life of the computer, so important to get it right.
My current thinking is to start with the 6 core model (I guess I have no real reason for this decision, except that I feel like the 4-core base model is put there to make the price feel lower, while the real advantages in performance start at the 6 core - am I way off on this one?). But, I wonder if I should spring for the 8 core or even the 12 core? Probably overkill for me - out of my budget anyway.
The other decision is the graphics card - is the D500 enough? Will it be limiting factor in the future? Or should I move to D700?
    Here are the cost differences:
from 6 core to 8 core is $1500
    from D500 to D700 is $600
Which is worth it? (neither, both?)
    Thanks.

Whether it's worth it depends more on you and what your current and future needs are.
The good news is that Adobe's CC apps can already take advantage of the AMD FirePro GPU's in the Mac Pro, and offer hardware acceleration of the Mercury Playback Engine, which you'll see in Premiere, After Effects, and Media Encoder.  According to the Adobe staffers I've talked to, even the FirePro D300's will see a big benefit, in fact they say you won't see a big bump by upgrading the GPU.  As far as Adobe's apps are concerned, their OpenCL use is all single precision, and the D500/D700 upgrades put a lot of weight in double precision performance (which is unused in their apps).  Their recommendation - put the bulk of your budget on cores and RAM.
How many depends on how elaborate and complex your work is.  Simple documentary films with the odd effects, transitions, titles, and grading.. you'd be fine with a 6-core IMO.  If you're leaning towards getting into really layered comps and effects, you'd shorten those long render times down a lot with the 8-core.  As for memory, I'd recommend at least 4GB per physical core.
    Good luck!

  • Odd issue with transitions...Help!

OK, I have an odd issue with the transitions going on within Imovie.
In this case I have the "Photo album" theme.
About every three slides the "camera" pulls back from one picture (pic 1) and goes in to the other photo (pic 2).
2/3 of the way into the video the (pic 2) photo is late, so you actually see the switch in the middle of the transition. Pic one is in its place until about half way through.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Just found this related thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1903498&start=0&tstart=0
In there, they suggest a work around using Precision Editor on the transition. I will try this tonight.

  • Odd thing happening to my transitions

    Hello,
Scenario: 15 minute, 720p, 59.94 program using only Premiere CS6. Two runs of the same program are placed back-to-back on timeline and burned to standard def DVD via Dynamic Link to Encore (account can only purchase 30 minute blocks of time thus the need to play same program twice).  Burned to SD DVD for delivery to local cable broadcaster. Transitions used are Premiere's Cross Dissolve.
After burning to DVD the 30 frame transitions on the first instance of program play fine. On the second instance of program the transitions are not as smooth.
Problem not detectable when playing from timeline in program monitor or on external Sony pro production monitor.
I've never seen anything like this but then I've done a program like this where it is played twice, in succession.
I deleted the render files and re-rendered and re-burned. No luck.
    Thanks for any insights.

Hi DMH79, Thanks for your response and insight on this.
Yeah, transitions on that video look like mine. To be honest, I thought there was something wrong when playing pack from my timeline but it didn't so bad that it was killer and the account was not complaining when I gave them drafts of the program encoded to MP4 files at the project's full 1280x720p rez. But output to DVD made them considerably more apparent. When the account sees that they will undoubtedly complain.
I've been primarily involved with location audio production over the past couple of years and I guess I forgot what smooth cross-dissolves are supposed to look like. (This is the first video production project I've worked on in CS6... So the problem is indeed apparent on the timeline and significantly worse on DVD output.
After looking at this thread, I have decided to do a test by changing from GPU Acceleration to software only and thus the timeline is now being re-rendered accordingly.
I'll let post the results here soon, after the DVD burn.
I wonder if we could speak on the phone briefly re an Adobe matter unrelated to this and thus not really appropriate for this thread BUT definitely a matter of concern which I think many users are not even aware of. I'd like to get some private opinions before posting in these forums and how to approach that.
    Thanks!

  • Odd Artifact With Transitions

I am making a school movie and have noticed a problem. When I use the "cross dissolve" transition with still photos, there is a flash or hiccup at the end of each transition. This flash is but a fraction of a second, but is very noticeable, and would be quite distracting if it happened after each transition. Has anyone else run across this problem? Is there a fix? I don't know if it happens with other transitions or not.
    I would appreciate any feedback!
    Thanks.

You were right -- thanks for your insight. If I suppress the Ken Burns feature, the flash is gone. I do not like the way it looks without it, as there is no interest with the photos static. Indeed, it is rather boring, and I would almost prefer not do do it at all in this manner. I also did find that the flash occurred with other transitions in addition to the cross dissolve. I would still like to be able to do this movie the way I want to -- meaning with Ken Burns and any transition I want. Does anyone know of a fix to this problem?
    Thank you.

  • Odd Occurrences

For about a month now, my system has been acting very odd. All PDF viewers, like Preview and Adobe Reader always unexpectedly quit when I launch them, as does StuffIt Expander. Many icons appear pixilated, such as Mail, Terminal, and Disk Utility, as well as AOL Instant Messenger. I have run disk permissions, as well as the usual sudo periodic daily/weekly/monthly commands... Does anyone have any clue why this is happening?

  • Desktop pic (Wallpaper) Change pic every 5 secs but the odd transition?

    Hi, my first post
    I have two macs both running 10.3.9. A G4 and G5.
I am using customised wallpaper showing 2x jpegs that change every 5 seconds. looks fab on one machine (the G5) as the transition is graduated into white and back up again, but the other machine (the G4) using the same OS does NOT graduated. It just abruptly switches back and forth with no subtle gradation.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Graduating the transition is a function of Quartz Extreme, and requires that the computer supports it.

  • Odd Lightroom Occurrence

I have been using Lightroom 1.3 for some time now. I have it set up so that I can edit a photo in PS CS3 and save it and return to Lightroom with the PS edits in place. I did several of these types of edits in the past few days. My computer has not been turned off in the meantime.
Yesterday, I went into Lightroom to do the same thing. This time, the only thing available to me was to Edit in Photoshop Elements (which has been installed on my computer for some time). In order to edit in PS, I had to add it as an additional external editor and choose it that way. I did my edits, saved it and returned to Lightroom only to find that my edits did not appear!
My computer had not been turned off in between the days of successful edits and this unsuccessful one and no new updates, etc. had been installed.
How do I get this back to the way things were before? I don't want to uninstall/reinstall PE and PS to get this to work.
Any ideas? Has this happened to anybody else or just me??

Why don't you update to 1.4.1, delete the Prefs file (see FAQ) and relaunch. I don't use Elements, so no experience there. But deleting and resetting Prefs may restore PS as auto choice of editors.

  • Playing off the Timeline via firewire( XdCam pal) Monitoring Issues

    Hey,
I have just switched to FCP and have found that when recording the from the FCP timeline manually via firewire into a Sony XDCam PDW530 I experience 4:3 flashes in the Camera monitor and viewfinder as the timeline plays down Video Transitions. All effects have been rendered (Blue line above transition)
However the Camera appears to record correctly to disc. I played the recorded material from the camera via an XD deck into a wide screen monitor and all appears fine the 4:3 flashes are not present on transitions. play the disc back in the camera and the 4:3 flashes for the duration of the Video Transitions return????
when playing out of the Camera via SDI and Analogue Composite outputs into a wide screen monitor all appears ok as well.
It's a little odd that you cannot monitor the output correctly on the XDcam. If i change the pull down settings from 2323 to 2332 it monitors the transitions correctly but the video aspect is somewhere between 4:3 and 16:9.
Shoot in 16:9 Capture DV Pal, Edit DV Pal, Playback Output Apple FireWire Pal (720 x 576)
    Any ideas????

    Thanks Shane,
We have been down the PRINT TO VIDEO road with the same playback issues in the XD Camera's LCD screen. We still see the 4:3 transition on the 16:9 image when playing off the timeline / playing back the recorded media in the camera and viewing on cameras screen .
I guess this is only a monitor issue. If you don't include any video effects it plays down 16:9 perfectly in the cameras monitor
What is recorded onto the disc is fine.
Also my understanding is the what's coming off the timeline is a DV stream so not sure how the GOP format comes into play. Recording onto a XD Cam off the timeline thru other edit programmes has never been an issue. I have come from Avid Pinnacle and the monitoring of transitions was never an issue when streaming back to the xdcam.
    Thanks

  • SUPERBUG? Transitions / Unbalanced Between Clips & Unsync Audio HELP! 2006

I have been able to reproduce this SUPERBUG every time.
I have split the audio track from the video clips to solve the bugs in iMovie that many have listed here in the forums. Also, it was a live music performance that I added other clips in the middle to compensate for shakey camera and bad shots.
All was fine till I started adding a 'simple' "Cross Dissolve" transition.
Both clips in the transition would not be evenly balanced in the cross dissolve, and would un-sync the audio if it was locked in place or not.
If you center the play head in the middle of the croos dissolve and delete it, you can see how much it is off from where the clips join.
This is the WORST case scenerio, since the only way to use transitions would be to place them, and the re align the live video with the audio clips, and then there is blank black clips EVERYWHERE!
My last problem was the new Slick 8 Plug-In Stabilizer which still doesn't work in iMovie 6 ( Gee Three says it's on the way ) ... and now this?
Who is programming at Apple these days?
They better get some real talent there quick .. I'm furious.
Has anyone else figure this out .. or is there some trick I don't get?
    Help

"..Both clips in the transition would not be evenly balanced in the cross dissolve, and would un-sync the audio if it was locked in place or not.."
Applying any transition in iMovie (..except 'Overlap'..) will "un-sync the audio", because any transition lays the tail of the first clip OVER the head of the following clip to merge them both, one into the other. This shortens the overall running time of the two clips - and anything else which follows - by the total duration of the transition.
It's always best to practise with a few clips, or another "test" project, first ..just to see what the effects will be before starting a major project, and then you can test the effect of adding a transition. Same with doing a bit of woodwork, or stain removal: it's always best to do a test first, and see what the result is ..then you know how to apply that to the 'real thing'.
All that you have to do is to allow some extra length to the tail of the first clip, and to the head of the following clip, to match the duration of the transition you want to use. This is easy to do if you're dropping in a "cutaway" shot to replace some shaky footage, for example.
So if you want to use a one second Cross Dissolve, say, (..that's 30 frames in NTSC American video, or 25 frames in European PAL video..) then leave an extra 30 frames (..25 frames for PAL..) at the end of the first clip, and an extra 30 (.. or 25..) frames at the head of the next clip, for this second to be "eaten away" by the transition. Your underlying music will then still be in sync after the transition has been applied.
"..Who is programming at Apple these days?.." ..This is the way that iMovie has worked since Version 1. It isn't a "bug", but simply the way that editing works in this easy-to-use "consumer" (..i.e; amateur..) editing program.
"..the clips that where split EXACTLY at the playhead ( and audio extracted from the video ) return as one frame away from each other.." ..If you do a few tests, you'll see what happens to the frame count where clips are split and re-joined. I've an NTSC project here (..I'm in the UK and usually work in PAL..) which is a single clip with a total running time of 27:10. If I split the single clip at 02:00 ..i.e; exactly 2 seconds.. and the second clip lasts 25:10, then when I recombine them the total running time becomes, once again, 27:10. If I split them at 01:29, then the second clip becomes 25:11 long, and if I delete the split, they revert to a single clip of 27:10 ..i.e; no frames lost.
However, American (NTSC) video is slightly odd in that its real frame rate is 29.97 frames per second, so every minute or two a couple of "imaginary" frames are lost - not really lost, but the frame count simply jumps - to try to "round things up" to 30 frames per second again. This is called "drop frame time code". No frames are actually dropped ..the numbers are just "rounded up" now and again.
So if your frame count seems slightly off ..don't worry about it.
This is the way that video editing works.
In the "professional" editing programs (Final Cut Express and Pro), the program tries to find extra frames on the ends, or beginnings, of clips, so that those excess frames can be "eaten up" by transitions, and total clip length remains the same. But that relies upon more footage being available than you're actually working with ..so someone new to those programs might ask "Why do I have to import more footage than I need?"
Just practise with it a bit, and you'll soon see that it works OK ..just leave extra frames on the ends of clips to allow for the footage which gets used up in the Cross Dissolves, or whichever transitions you use.

  • Follow up from Real Pro thread - NTSC and PAL and AVCHD and FCE

Interesting topic line but can I just check one thing out from PAL land.
With an HD/AVCHD camera it is not recording in either PAL or NTSC as this is a analogue mode - so the issue issue of format is only relevant if i playback on a analogue TV. We have a digital tv so i record on AVCHD, deal in that format in FCE and burn to DVD (not sure in what format) play on DVD player through the digital TV.
If that is all correct then why do the manufacturers, in my case Canon HF10, talk about an NTSC and PAL version and then price differently - comparing the spec sheets from the Canon site I can see no difference. Am I missing something?

    Hi Tom
The thing i was trying to establish was whether really there was a difference (other than price ) in the so called versions of the Canon HF10. The specs are exactly the same. My assumption is that as the cam records in AVCHD unless you intend to play back thro a PAL or NTSC TV (bearing in mind most European PAL sets play NTSC as well) it makes no odds which camera.
My plan- and this is what I need to check - is to record and import into FCE taking your advice not to record in the highest quality to save rendering on import. After editing can export through FCE to PAL or NTSC DVD version for playing on TV.
    Does that sound right
PS I have found your book on FCE very helpful to date !!!!

  • Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal)  from iphoto slideshow?

I have tried the iphoto forum and have been directed here. Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal) for an export from iphoto slideshow? I want to export 200+ photos with random transitions and the ken burns effect. Imovie offers offers automatic ken burns effect via project properties but I can't find a way to add random transitions automaticcally. Is it possible? I want to add the exported file to a movie in Final Cut Studio. Normally I have to resort to using adobe photoshop elements 5 and premiere elements 3 on my bootcamp partition. I would love to do this all in Mac OSX - since leaving Windows, this is the only thing that forces me to use that lousy operating system!
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have tried the iphoto forum and have been directed here. Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal) for an export from iphoto slideshow?
Not directly. But you can do it with a bit of external help. Create a slideshow project in iPhoto using the "Random" transitions and auto KBE you want. Then export the slideshow as a 640x480 MPEG4/AAC 30 fps full motion MOV file. Drop the file to MPEG Steamclip and select the "Export to DV" File menu option. The select the DV format, PAL standard, and aspect you want. (I would normally select the "Frame Blending" option in the main menu when going from 30 fps to 25 fps.)

  • NTSC project  modified to PAL project is this possible?

I have a project that i am working with that has 3 menus, 7 tracks & 17 scripts.
there are two DVD's in the "set" each one is the same... just different video tracks... essentially its a 2 disc set that i need one version of NTSC (done) and one PAL version.
I have created the NTSC project first, but before I create the PAL versions i wanted to know if anyone had come up with a way of just replacing the project assets & video assets to PAL?
I have tried removing all the video off all the tracks and deleting them from the project (this works with no menus & no scripts to convert to PAL) Next I figured it was the menus so I changed out the video assets of the menus and transitions to PAL.mov's but they are lower quality and the project still will not switch to PAL.
any ideas before i recreate all of those scripts and menus in PAL?
as a side note just to make sure... Dolby files do not matter right? I dont think i need to make PAL versions of audio.. i couldnt find a way to do it anyway... just wanted to double check that thought.
    Thank you.
