Odd pause in Ai2014 when selecting placed image

So as I’m working in AI2014, Im noticing a rather annoying glitch. Every time I select a placed image (.psd, .eps, .tiff, etc) there is a long pause when the ‘rainbow spinning wheel’ comes up for a few seconds to a few minutes. Not sure what AI is doing but it’s really annoying. (it also will crash from time to time or lock up for so long that I have to force quit it.
Last night I closed my Links tab and I noticed that the pause wasn’t happening…. what is it about having the links panel open that effects my performance?? I must mention that this WAS NOT the case in CC and 6.
Any dev have any workaround? (and no, keeping the links panel closed isn't really a good option)

Maybe -- with regard to sharing. I had modified the file since this problem came up (by removing the underlying type in photoshop) so I need to see if I still have an original to share.
One other note. I had gotten the ad from a co-worker who had set it up. One mistake in my original post is that the black box placed over the underlying type was 100% K and not a 4-color black.
In order to share, how do I get you the file(s) and do you want both the PDF and InDesign/Photoshop files?

• When selecting multiple images in LR 5.2 on Mac, how do I delete all selected photos?

Based on http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1308132?tstart=0 I decided to add each question seperately:
Hello, I'm quite interested in buying Lightroom 5.2. I tried the RC which ran out now. Yet, I have a several questions that I can't really find good conclusive answers to, that I'd like to get answered before buying LR. Please don't write maybe like this or that (assumptions), since I don't want to start my whole workflow and then realize that I have to change everything around, so please answer, if you know for sure that something works and you are, preferably, using that method too.
When selecting multiple images in LR 5.2 RC on my Mac, using the Filmstrip view, how do I delete all selected files using a shortcut (as opposed to the right-click context-menu > remove selected photos)? Details: Using backspace asks me if I want to delete it, I choose from disk, but it just deletes individual photos, so if I have 3 selected, I need to do this 3 times.

Many users (including me) will thank you for saving us the trouble of looking for this description in the manual. Seriously!
However, if something performs unexpectedly, if it's not a bug, it's at least a user-inconvenience.
When an unexpected result like this occurs in a product, often the documentation writer is given the task of writing the workaround into the docs. That's not a great way to fix bugs permanently, even if it does help in the short term. So, it's probably a good idea to point to where in the documentation it seems that the product-performance problem is smoothed over, when filing the report/request.
Feature enhancement requests and bugs are filed the same way. And, developers do listen to requests. Many features in many Adobe products originated in feature requests. However, product managers and, financial-management folks above them, who have some power to decide where to expend resources, set the priorities. Adobe's new subscription model is supposed to release some of the pressure on developers to meet a new release deadline every-so-often, where a whole bunch of product improvements is revealed, and instead, under the idea of making constant improvements available through more-frequent updates, users will get results sooner.

As far as I know, this is not a bug, this is a feature of Lightroom (although I can't explain why anyone would want Lightroom to operate this way). You can find text in the Lightroom Manual that clearly explains tha operations performed on selection of photos in the Filmstrip is different than the same operation performed on photos selected in the Grid.

That works for me on WinXP. After selecting your image in

try hitting Ctrl+` on Win or Cmd+` on Mac to switch focus to
the Code

• Issues when selecting multiple images in LR6.

I've noticed a few changes to how LR6 behaves when I select multiple images.
First, if I select a few images in the Library view, I am only essentially "stuck" in those images when I press the left or right arrow keys. In previous versions of LR, hitting the left or right arrow would move to image on either side of the selected images. Now I'm only able to endlessly scroll through the selected images and I have to press the up or down arrow to get out of the selected images. Is there a way to change it back to how it used to work?
Second, and I think this is related to the first issue, I used to be able to select all images in a collection, press the down arrow and I'd end up at the last image in a collection. Now, it no longer works.
Anyone else notice either of these things? Have you found a way to change it back to how it's always been?
Thanks!

Interesting. I just went back to LR5.7 (Mac) and confirmed that it behaves just like I originally said, but LR6 does not. Maybe Windows has always been this way? Regardless, any input from Mac users?

• ARD 3.3.1 Administrator software freezes when selecting color image quality

I have a lab of 35 Macbooks and when I try to observe them all at once using a higher image quality in color, it freezes or slows down so much I have to force quit the application. The only way I am able to observe and select one of the stations is when I choose black and white. Is there a workaround? Does anyone have the same issue? Thanks

I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
before.

• Problems when selecting an image from a scanned document... please help

I scan student work and I want to make comments. I want to copy a portion of the student work from the scanned PDF. I use preview and select a portion of the PDF. When I paste the selection into pages the entire PDF is put into pages. If I paste into text edit, I only get the selection. This problem does not occur in Pages 09 but I can't afford it. Any suggestions?

r,
Try this workflow:
Open the PDF in Preview and use the Selection Tool in Preview to highlight the portion that you want to excerpt.
Edit > Copy.
File > New from Clipboard.
Save.
Drag new file into Pages.
Using this method you will not lose any resolution as you may when you do a screen capture.

• Difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images, percentage not kept

There is some kind of difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images. The images I've dealt with right now were vector images but it might apply to all kinds of images.
When replacing an existing image, the CS4 behaviour is to let the image fill up the frame. In CS3 the percentage was set to 100% as default (the % you see when selecting the image, not the container).
Also when replacing an impage in CS4, the "inner" image frame is kept, while in C3, the percentage was kept.
Is there some kind of placement preferences / settings to let CS4 act the same wat as CS3 did, when placing an image?
-- Andreas

Yes, the behavior was changed in CS4 (and many users, like me, prefer the new system).
If you click and drag a loaded image place cursor the entire image will be be scaled to fit the proportionally drawn frame -- a huge timesaver if you mostly place uncropped art. If you want 100% of the image at 100% scale, just click and release -- same as before, or as before you can pre-draw a frame and place into it and your image will come in cropped at 100% (unless you've changed the fitting options for the frame before placing).

• Why is Illustrator very slow and locks up when I select an image?

When selecting an image with the links panel open Illustrator locks up for a good 20 seconds... When I close the links panel everything is fine.
This is very annoying since I use the links panel all the time in my daily work routine.
Anyone else encountered this problem?

Ok a little strange, as mine is now running well after the updates from a few days ago.
Apologies if this is a false positive, but I can now have the LINKS panel open while highlighting on a linked PSD. I will run a few more tests to see if the error appears in any other ways.
I completely agree that Illustrator CC in particular does suffer from lagging across the board. I have never seen CC or CC2014 running as smoothly as say CS6.
I use Universal Type Server and the lagging caused by this (especially when backspacing text) has caused me no end of problems, but they slowly release updates and the problems slowly get ironed out.
Also I know this has been said before, but I had issues with the Verdana and Tahoma fonts and this slowed Illustrator (esp CC 2014) down also. I had the fonts installed but they were causing issues.
I searched over the web and at my work for alternative versions of these fonts and collected (what we think to be) a reliable pack of these two fonts that we can now use on machines in case they have similar lagging issues. So try getting hold of alternative copies of Verdana and Tahoma...fonts can corrupt very easily!

• AI CS4 Why can I not manipulate placed images

I haven't used AI for quite some time... seem to have forgotten whatever I once knew.
Placing an image on an existing bit of artwork... the image is a *.png format rendition of an arabesque.
When I place it into my artwork I am not able to resize it. As I recall, I should be able to resize, shrink, stretch etc.
I am selecting it with the arrow tool, it is outside any objects (not overlapped or whatever).
Shouldn't I be able to quickly and easily manipulate the image in just about any way I want?
Instead, when selected the images aquires a red box aournd it, and can only be moved around, not resized.

Also you mean the solid (black) arrow right?
Thats the baby... thanks. I must have inadvertently hid the b box. Not used to working that way so was a bit lost.
And yes I meant the solid black arrow tool ... sorry.
Also to Steve: Thanks, and yes the direct tools do the job too. I found the `free transform' tool, but it was really that bounding box being hidden that threw me.

• How to reduce screen size when selecting images??

I clicked on something wrong today, and my settings have been
screwed up. When I am selecting an image (for example:
Behaviors>Set Nav Bar>Open, the screen that followed (that
held all my images) took up about half the screen. And it was easy
to make this larger or smaller, in the usual grab-a-corner-and-drag
way. Obvious, and easy. But now that I've done something wrong,
this last window takes up my entire 22" screen. There is a grab bar
in the lower-right corner, but it has no effect. In other words,
it's impossible to make this screen smaller. As it is; it's
impossible to use DW effectively. I tried quitting and re-starting
DW. No luck. Tried rebooting the entire computer. Again, no luck.
Tried uninstalling the entire DW programme and re-installing it.
Oddly, even when I did this, it did not reset to its original
settings. The window still opens up and covers the entire screen,
and it's still impossible to shrink this window down. This is true
in "Set Nav Bar Image", "Swap Image," etc..
Anyone have *any* suggestions??

sounds like you maximized the page interface. just select the
square box in windows, or the green + button in mac osx. It's going
to save your preferences, so restarting isn't going to do it. And
good grief, don't reinstall the program. See if resizing the
interface helps.

Occasionally, some of the image borders turn dark grey (medium grey is the default) and then random other images cannot be opened with a double click. They only open when selected using the arrows on the keyboard. They also cannot be moved to collections. Anyone have a solution for this?

When you say "could not be opened"- what are you referring to? A double click of the mouse should view the clicked image in Loupe view- the same as pressing [E] on the keyboard for an enlarged view. (And a second double-click will take you back to library grid view.)
To "open" an image in the Development module requires you to select the image then press [D] or click on the [Develop] button.
When you say "could not be ...moved" -what are you referring to? Are you trying to move an image file from its place in a folder to another folder? Are you just wanting it in a collection? When you drag an image to a collection you are only placing a link to the image in the collection- not actually moving any file. The image will stay exactly where it is in its original folder and will remain as a thumbnail preview in the Library Grid view.
Are you having any "mouse" problems that may be changing its actions in LR ?
Do you see an exclamation mark on any image borders ?
Let's keep working on this. I am curious to see you find an answer.

• How to see all image types when saving an image without selecting "all files"every time

Locking duplicate thread.
Please continue here: [[/questions/951766]]

Hallo, and thank you for reading this.
I am a person who saves a lot of images online and renames them in different folders in different names like B - 34 or G - 56. I have been working with firefox 10 for quite some time and it had a pretty handy bug (I guess) where I could save an image and firefox would just save the image in it's original type (JPEG,PNG etc) while "save as type" was empty.
It also always has shown all the image types in the folder where I save the images (except for GIF) and that helpes me quite a lot by saving me the trouble of selecting "all files" every time I save or going to the folder to rename every image.
Now this seems to be lacking in the newest firefox versions and my question is if I can set firefox to always show me all the image file types when saving an image, instead of only showing JPEG's when I try to save a JPEG.
Thank you for your time.

I suspect this is a Windows problem. I am surmising the FilePicker uses the Operating System or Desktop facilities. Does Windows 7 offer any other file categories like ''images'' ?
I do not normally use Windows 7, but may the option depend upon the directory being an indexed one, I ask after finding this thread ''Bring File types tab back'' [http://www.windows7taskforce.com/view/819]
This question is a duplicate of [/questions/951764]
Normally I would lock the duplicate question, but in this instance I will leave it open as it is unanswered and someone may give a better reply.

• Has anyone experienced this strange behavior when selecting a region of an image in preview?

When I select a section of an image that has the height and/or width of one pixel, the bounding box does the strange thing pictured to the left (at around 6x mag). The box starts out the correct dimension on that axis (i.e., 1 px), but tapers down to 0 px by the other end of that line. Below is an example (at 80x) if a 1 x 2 px box. Depending on the direction you sweep the mouse when selecting the box can also appear as a single diagonal, horizontal, or vertical line.
Copying and pasting the selection demonstrates that this does not have an effect on the shape of the selection, only on how it is displayed.
I don't suppose that this is anything but a curious little bug with no impact on performance, though it could be confusing to some small subset of users.

Interesting but I do not see this in my Preview/cropping.
