Odd Question about file extensions

Hello, I have a strange question that I cannot seem to fix on my own.
The other week I was messing around in my Utilities folder and I was clicking on some of the applications contained in that folder.
When I closed out some of the programs that I had opened I noticed that all the files on my computer now have a suffix at the end of their names. Everything.
So before an application would say, TechTool Pro 4 it now says TechTool Pro 4.app
TextEdit.app, etc etc
I know this is a minor thing but I would like to find a way to remove this suffix that I inadvertently applied to everything on my laptop.
Thanks for the help

See if this helps. Go to Finder choose Preferences then click Advanced. See if the *Show all file extensions* box is checked. If it is uncheck it.

  • Question about file extension - using email delivery options in 12.1.3

So, we had 12.1.1 and we have some existing XML Publisher reports.
Now we've upgraded to 12.1.3, and there is a new option when running a concurrent request called "Delivery Options".
This allows, among other things, to deliver the output to an email address.
In testing this, I tried running a report that typically outputs to Excel....however when it sends the email (again, not using a bursting control file, but the delivery options in the concurrent request), the attachment comes over with an extension of .EXCEL instead of .XLS
Does anyone know where I can change that extension?
    thanks!

  • Question about file type designations

    Hi,
I use a program called Sound Studio to record meetings that I do. Lately, what's happening now when I download videos emailed by friends, the file extension says .mp4, but when I open them, Sound Studio opens up and I only hear the audio (because audio is all that program does). When I do the get info command, the instructions say open file with Sound Studio, rather than QuickTime.
Is there some kind of setting somewhere, either in Snow Leopard or in Safari, where I can set that all downloaded video files are to be opened by Quicktime?
    Thanks.

change the default app in that popup from sound studio to anything you want to use like Quicktime player and click 'change all".

  • Question about file size when using "Export for Web"

    Hi!
I created a .mov file and worked to get a great balance between file size and quality so that I could deliver it via the web and make it easier for end users to see the video on a slower connection.
My question: When I use "Export for Web," my .mov file is converted into a very large .m4v file--more than double the size of the original file. I know that this export option is to optimize the file for a wide variety of users/internet speeds. Am I correct in guessing that the end size is not an issue? I would post the .mov file instead, but I really like the option of embedding into a html page along with the "click to play" option.
Bottom line--is it better to post the smaller .mov file that i originally started with or to go ahead and link to the bigger .m4v file that was created with the "Export for Web" option?

"Export for Web" is a feature of QuickTime Pro and it makes 4 files and the html page code for easy copy/paste Web page editing.
The very first file is called a "reference movie" and it links to the other 3 files (56kbps, 900kbps and 1.5Mbps). It, and the page code, "read" the connection speed of the viewing hardware and "serve up" the correct file based on that connection speed.
In nearly all cases the "Desktop" version would still be smaller in file size than the original source. The times the file would "increase" in file size would be when an already compressed was used as the source file. You can find out more about your source file by opening it in QuickTime Player and viewing the Movie Inspector window information.
There are dozens of other html "tricks" that could be used if your source file is already compressed but you want a different display size:
Page code to show "aspect" or scale="tofit". This code allows values "outside" of those found in the actual QuickTime file be used for the Web page display. A 320X240 QuickTime .mov file looks pretty good at double size (640X480) but the file size would still be that of the source file.
"Poster Movie" is another html trick that loads the Web based file directly in the QuickTime Player application (bypassing Web page layout restrictions). These files are also known as "Presentation Movies".
Another method is the QuickTime Media Link file (.qtl). These are simple text based files that are used as a "direct link". These use simple XML (Extensible Markup Language) and are easily created in any text editing application. The simple syntax has amazing control over a simple QuickTime .mov file. You can launch (and quit) the QuickTime Player, display at other dimensions and even embed "links" inside the display.
Some of my files as examples:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/Lemon_Trees/ a "Poster Movie" style.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
A QuickTime Media Link file. A tiny file should download to the viewing machine, launch QuickTime Player, present the movie and it even includes a "link" to my Web page.
Edit: It appears you must now double click the .qtl download to launch QuickTime.

  • Odd question about transferring.

Ok, about 2 months ago I had no problems moving my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one. So with that bravery I just tried moving iTunes and my library from where it had been to a new bigger drive, and I ended up losing huge chunks of my library. Now, my question is, I still have what I had previously sync'd onto my Pod, is there any way to transfer what is in my iPod "into" iTunes?? Otherwise, I'm going to end up losing a whole day re-importing my CD's back into my library, not to mention lose what I had purchased from my iPod. I had just purchased 2 new TV episodes but in order to get them onto my Pod, I have to sync, and if I do that I'll lose what I have there. Help!!!

*is there any way to transfer what is in my iPod "into" iTunes??*
The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
One last thing if your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an iTunes with a different content. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever retrieval method you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • A very odd question about accessing cube via HTTP PUMP

    hi there:
Everything was fine a couple of days ago when I used excel to connect to cube. Today, when I use excel -> from Other sources, I can select the AS database but can not see the cube at all... The odd thing is that if I choose to use Existing Connections
which contains the connection to the CUBE before, after put my user id and password, I am able to connect and navigate cube data.
There is a role for the AS database and myself has been granted as Full control ( administrator).  I've also switched to SSMS and access cube over there directly, no issues at all.
Question: why excel is not allowing me to see the list of cubes for an AS database???
    Thanks

    Hello,
How have you setup permissions for the HTPP access. If e.g. IIS and SSAS running on different machines, the permissions settings are a little bit difficult. So may a different user is used and that one may don't have permissions to access the cube.
See Configure HTTP Access to Analysis Services on Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 => Step 3: Configure IIS authentication and add the extension + Step 5: Grant data access

  • Question about file previewing in Bridge CS3

Does anyone know if it's possible to preview a Corel Painter file in Bridge? I'm running CS3 Bridge on a Windows XP machine. Currently, each Painter file is represented by the program's default icon. I'd love to actually see a real preview of each file!
    Thanks!

The files I'm referring to end in the extension .RIF
If it's not possible with the standard Bridge program, does anyone know of an addon that would allow this to work?
When in Correl Paint use "save as" to save as jpeg or some other format supported in PhotoShop.  That is easier than trying to convert it outside of the program.
You can keep the original .rif file in case you want to go back and work on it.

  • Question about File upload functionality in Weblogic

    Hi,
We're currently trying to deploy a web application on the weblogic 12c server (via war file). And the app needs to upload a text file onto the a temperary directory within weblogic server. And on the web page side, we use JQuery File upload plugin.
My question is, on the file receiver side, does weblogic provide any tools to receive the uploaded file and store it?
    Thanks very much in advance.

    Hi,
Before setting the string or xstring to server->response->set_cdata (string) or server->response->set_data (xstring) try this:
    CONCATENATE 'attachment;filename=' lv_filename '.xml'  INTO lv_string.
    * Setting the filename by default
      server->response->set_header_field( name  = 'Content-Disposition'
                                          value = lv_string ).
    Hope this helps.

  • QUESTION ABOUT FILES

I want to delete an entry from a file and i'm trying not to load everything into memory at once.
Now, what i intend doing is, as i read from the file with the data (joe.txt), if the line read from joe.txt isn't what i want to delete, i want to write that information to another file (say joe1.txt). so at the end of the day, joe1.txt will contain everything in joe.txt without the information i deleted.
After all this is done, i want to change the fileName joe1.txt to joe.txt.
CAN THIS BE DONE or if anybody can think of a better way of doing this without loading all information into memory.
    Thanks a lot

The previous post about Java not being able to rename a file is incorrect File.renameTo(File) exists. Of course what you're asking can be done. I suspect you wish to remove data from a file. Look at the RandomAccessFile class:

  • Odd question regarding files on a mac-formatted external drive...

I have recently purchased a Western Digital external HDD (1TB) and have synced it with my mac as a time machine.
I have also, however, moved a bunch of files from my macbook, including family movies, DVD's I've ripped, a lot of my music collection, work files and some games.
This has worked brilliantly thus far.
BUT! I have my MBP bootcamped for some boring programs for work etc. but want to be able to listen to music/play games/access files through the WD HDD... This may be obvious to many people; but it wasn't immediately obvious to me: Because the External drive is formatted for Mac, as well as 'time machine-d', it refuses to be recognised by the PC...
    Thus, my question is:
Is there a way to move files from Mac to PC (bootcamped) through an external drive that is formatted to the Mac.
If not, is there a way to move files from Mac to PC through the bootcamp disc on the Macintosh Desktop. I understand that files smaller than 4 gigs can be moved across NTFS (?) but some of the files for my work stretch as far as 11 gigs...
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I've been looking around the net for the past week... It's time to be proactive...
If any more info is required, please let me know.
    Ollie.

    Hi Ollie,
with the BootCamp 3.0 Drivers Apple introduced a read access from BootCamp Windows to Mac OSX partitions, but this seems to only work with internal harddisks not with external ones.
MacDrive is the choice get full read and write access on Mac OSX partitions/harddisks while in Windows http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
For a simple read-only access HFSExplorer can be used http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/index2.html
The 4GB size limitation is only active on FAT32 file system not on NTFS, but Mac OSX itself can only read from NTFS partitions not write to them without additional helper like NTFS-3G http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
So, with you scenario (external HD = MacOS file system) it seems that MacDrive would be the way to go.
    Hope it helps

  • Odd Question - About CD Space & Waveburner. . .

    Hi.
Ive posted this in the waveburner forum and had no reponse so i thought maybe someone in here would be able to help.
My first problem was that Waveburner didnt accept files that were more than 2GB so i had to compress my file down using quicktime and get it into waveburner. I originally had a 2hr long DJ mix, which i cut down to about 65 mins. . .
I then cut it into all its tracks and named it all. . .
When it came to burning it said that there wasnt enough space on the CD. It then said (633MB Needed). . .
Does this mean it needs 633MB more or it needs 633MB in total. . .
    I thought CDs were 700MB?
Anyone that can shed any light on this would be really helping me out a lot!!!
    Cheers, B

    Hi,
You compressed in Quicktime? What exactly did you do? take a large file and squish it into a smaller-size type of file? Like an mp3?
A 2 hour DJ mix is a 2 hour DJ mix. what did Quicktime get rid of to make it 63 minutes? That's weird... it does not make any sense to me. you just let Quicktime edit out parts of your mix so it ended up at 63 minutes? Unattended?
But then you state you "cut it into all its tracks and named it all"... so you edited it into individual songs, which TOTAL how much time? 2 hours, or 63 minutes?
From the "error" message you got, i think you still have 2 hours of material, in which case I recommend you only do ONE CUT, and have less than 80 minutes of the first part one CD 1, and the rest on CD 2.
It will all together NEVER FIT ON ONE CD. EVER.
    Cheers

  • Odd question about engraving a shuffle

I received a Shuffle as a gift and noticed he had a message engraved on the clip. This was over two years ago. I'd like to know if he had gotten the message from the engraving gallery or if he made it up himself. The quote is not in the gallery, but since I received the shuffle long ago, it's possible Apple replaced it with something else. I can't find a way to contact Apple about this (by email, I'd rather not call about this); does anyone know how I can email them about this, so I can ask them if the message was ever in the gallery? It's a strange question, but I'm asking because it would make me feel even more special if the guy took the time to write something himself. Of course the thought, gift and engraving together are already signs of affection...poetry would make it even sweeter. Thanks.

If you got it more than 2 years ago it is not a 3rd Generation Shuffle and you are posting in the wrong place.
I doubt they have removed anything from the engraving gallery, which if I recall is a fairly recent option, although I can't be sure when it was put into place since I've never had one engraved. There is no place to email them and it would probably be hard to find anyone who would remember this anyway. So since it is not in the gallery take it on faith it was put there by the giver.
Of course they could have copied it from somewhere else. Have you tried a Google search?

  • Question about files in J2ME

    Good Evening all!
First off, I am creating a Registry web site for vintage BMW's (02 Series) and I have considered creating a MIDlet J2ME to use along side the web site. I plan to use the app on cell phones, especially ones with cameras.
    Now my question:
How can I find out where the picture files are located on the device?
PS. I am comfortable with J2SE, but am new to the J2ME scene.
    Thanks!

np. In J2ME you can't access any phone-specific functions like the phonebook, sms inbox, dialing or things like this. So you also cant access and load image located in the "normal" file system of the phone. The only storage you can access with your MIDlet is the RMS, but this is MIDlet dependent (each MIDlet has its own RMS).
This is valid for J2ME. I dont know, whether there are some phone specific APIs, which let you do such things. But the use of them is not recommended, since your app then requires some specific phones, and will not run on every J2ME-enabled phone.

  • Question about File Descripters

I am new to Java so forgive my ignorance...
I was wondering that why this FileDescriptor class is all about?? anyone give me any example(easy)
I am new.. but don't worry.. i know java io streams well...
    I will appreciate you help!!
    MOIN.

    Hi!
As long as I know, the main use of a FileDescriptor is to ensure the flushing of file buffers to disk by using the sync() method.
It is, if you have a FileOutputStream (or any stream connected to it) you cannot be sure that calling the flush() method will flush O.S. buffers to disk. The only way to do that is by means of:
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream( "xxx.yyy" );
.... // write here your data
// The following only flushes FileOutputStream buffers (if any)
    out.flush();
// Try to flush O.S. buffers
out.getFD().sync();Take a look at "JAVA I/O" by E. R. Harold for more info.
    Bye.
