Odd Safari "log in" window message

I've started getting a window pop up every time I launch safari and try to load my homepage, which is set to google. It says "To view this page, you must log in to this area on www.google.co.uk:80:" It then asks me for a username and password, with the sentence DSL router and your password will be sent unencrypted underneath. It has cancel and log in buttons and if you hit cancel it won't load the page. It doesn't always happen and sometimes happens when Safari seems to be working fine then I go to open a new window or tab. Help!

Hi, thanks for the welcome! It's great that there's somewhere to come for help. I did as you said, everything seems to be loading faster and I haven't had the window pop up, but having said that it wasn't happening every time I launched safari and tried to load a page. I guess I will just have to wait and see, but maybe it was google. That seems odd but I really wouldn't know. Anyway, I won't empty the trash just yet.Thanks so much for the help!

    Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
    This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].

  • Safari of my Macbook (on WiFi) suddenly fails to connect to the Internet.  A popup window message says another device on the network is using my computer's IP address.

    But then there was still no Internet access even after I have disconnected all other home computers (a total of four including the Macbook and one iMac desktop.  For simplicity, I shall categorically called them Mac hereafter unless otherwise specified.  The Macs are operating on WiFi.).
    The window message recommends changing the IP of either the Macs or the other device.  The latter of course does not apply because I don't think the other device is one of my computers.
    My questions:
    (1) Why did that happen suddenly since the Mac and other computers on the WiFi was working fine in the morning (as well as days before) and then all of a sudden an unknown device is using my computer's IP?  As far as I (we) can remember, we did not do any thing unusual this morning nor had we downloaded any special programs.
    (2) How do I change the IP since it requires Internet acess to do it and since I can't access the Internet on the Mac?
    (3) I am almost sure the problem is not caused by the Internet service because when I connected the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to an old Windows PC, I got Internet via Internet Explorer.  [I am actually sending out this message via IE on my PC.]  However, when I cennected the Ethernet line from the modem to a WiFi router (Airport Extreme) and then connect the router and the old PC, I did not get Internet on either the Mac nor the PC.  Similarly, there was no Internet on both Mac and PC If I connect Ethernet only between the modem and the router but not between PC and router.  So, the question is whether a third unknown party has gotten hold of my Mac IP address and is trying to break into the Mac?  Can it steal my personal info?
    (4)  How can I repair the Mac now and prevent future recurrences?  Is changing the IP address the way to do it?  (But like I said before I had tried but could not change the IP because I did not have Internet access on the Mac.  Is there an alternative method?)
    (5) I wonder if a computer's IP address remains constant if you don't change it.  The reason I am asking this question is because the aforesaid window message on the Macbook--not sure about the iMac--shows a different IP address--a few numerical digits were changed--almost every time it pops up following every failure trial of mine to access the Internet.  Was the Macbook trying to change the IP for me or was there some thing not right?

    Re: Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address.
    This message/problem was occuring intermittently for me in a household with two MacBooks accessing one Airport extreme.  Rebooting the modem and router would only temporarily fix the issue for me, so I spoke with a friend who works for Apple and it seems that the Airport Extreme settings were at the root of our particular issue.
    The router(Airport Extreme) recieves only one IP address from the modem and in order to allow it to share the IP address with two computers at once, the solution in my case was through:
    Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility>Manual Setup>Internet
    under Internet Connection- Select "share a public IP address"
    under NAT, check the box for "enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol"
       (this will allow the sharing of one public IP address with multiple devices)
    if this is a new setting, then click "Update" and the Airport Extreme should reboot itself with new settings applied.
    When all else is working properly, this is a satisfactory solution in my case.

  • Safari Opens NUMEROUS Windows Upon Running Program

    Whenever I to open Safari, over 80 windows open immediately.  My homepages are two websties and I'll get probably 30 or so windows with my Home "pages" combination, and then another 50 of windows of sites I visted recently.  If I proceed to close the windows out, more open.
    Any recommendations? Would reinstalling Safari work? Or does this look like a virus and should I just restore from my time machine backup? My most recent backup is roughly 1 week old and my external has not been connected since this began to happen.
    It's worth noting this only happens to Safari--Firefox works perfectly fine. No other odd behaviors (ie. system lag, program crashes, etc.) have appeared.

    Try un-checking the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option under the General pane of System Preferences and then opening Safari.    This disables the resume feature in lion.   It isn't a permanant soloution but it might help narrow down if the resume feature is responsible for this.
    Edit: It might also be worth fiddiling around with the homepage settings such as setting it to only open blank pages in  new windows and new tabs instead of opening your chosen homepage and see if there is any problem there

  • Safari causes flashing windows

    I've recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I've noticed now when I run Safari web browser, I keep getting flashing windows on the screen.  The size and location of the window appears to be random.  Even typing this message I'm getting the weird flashes!  Sometimes, they don't appear in the same window and appear down the right side of the Mac screen.  Is there in the bug in the software?  Is there something I need to update?  Has my machine got a virus?

    The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • CryptAcquireContext failing with ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (2L) when user not logged on Windows 8.1

    I am having a hard time migrating a C++ CryptoAPI-based application that currently runs on Windows Server 2008 to Windows 8.1. The scenario is:
    This application is eventually triggered by WatchDog.exe, which in its turn is triggered when the computer is started by Windows' Task Scheduler.
    Task Scheduler uses the following rules to start the WatchDog.exe:
    A Administrator User Account;
    Run Whether user is logged on or not;
    UNCHECKED: Do not store password. The task will only have access to local resources;
    Run with Highest Privileges;
    Configure for Win 8.1;
    Triggered at system startup.
    The server sits there, nobody logged, until in a given scenario WatchDog.exe starts the application. Application log confirms that the owner of the process (GetUserName)
    is the very same user Task Scheduler used to trigger WatchDog.exe.
    It turns out that this application works fine in Windows Server 2008, but in windows 8.1 a call to CryptAcquireContext fails
    with return code ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (2L). The odd thing is that the application will NOT fail if, when started, the user is physically logged
    on the machine, although it was not the user who started the application manually.
    I took a look at the documentation and
    found:
    "The profile of the user is not loaded and cannot be found. This happens when the application impersonates a user, for example, the IUSR_ComputerName account."
    I had never heard of impersonification, so I made a research and found the APIs LogonUser,ImpersonateLoggedOnUser and RevertToSelf.
    I then updated the application in this way:
    HANDLE hToken;
    if (! LogonUser(L"admin", L".", L"XXXXXXXX", LOGON32_LOGON_BATCH, LOGON32_PROVIDER_DEFAULT, &hToken))
    logger->log (_T("Error logging on."));
    else
    logger->log (PMLOG_LEVEL_TRACE, _T("Logged on."));
    if (! ImpersonateLoggedOnUser(hToken))
    logger->log (_T("Error impersonating."));
    else
    logger->log (_T("Impersonated."));
    err = XXXXXXXXX(); // calls function which will execute CryptAcquireContext
    if (! RevertToSelf())
    logger->log (_T("Error reverting."));
    else
    logger->log (_T("Reverted."));
    Excerpt with the call to CryptAcquireContext:
    // Get the handle to the default provider.
    if(! CryptAcquireContext(&hCryptProv, cryptContainerName, MS_ENHANCED_PROV, PROV_RSA_FULL, 0))
    DWORD e = GetLastError();
    _stprintf_s (logMsg, 1000, _T("Error %ld acquiring cryptographic provider."), e);
    cRSALogger->log (logMsg);
    return ERR_CCRYPT_NO_KEY_CONTAINER;
    cRSALogger->log (_T("Cryptographic provider acquired."));
    As the result, I got the log:
    [2015/01/08 20:53:25-TRACE] Logged on.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:25-TRACE] Impersonated.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:26-ERROR] Error 2 acquiring cryptographic provider.
    [2015/01/08 20:53:26-TRACE] Reverted.
    That seems to show that impersonation is working properly, but still I get Error 2 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) on CryptAcquireContext.
    Summary:
    On Windows Server 2008, the very same application runs properly even without the calls to LogonUser/Impersonate/Revert.
    On Windows 8.1, the application, with or without the calls to LogonUser/Impersonate/Revert, will only work properly if the user is logged on (which
    is not acceptable).
    Any thoughts where I can run to in order to get this working on windows 8.1?
    Thank in advance,
    Dan

    There are a couple of issues.
    Based on the parameters being used in CryptAcquireContext().  A profile needs to be loaded and your app has to be running as the same user who created the keyset. (which is why it works when a user is logged on Windows 8.1) Also, impersonation
    does not load your user profile, you need to call LoadUserProfile().  It seems like you should be using a machine keyset for your scenario if you want to do this when nobody is logged on.
    Take a look at the following KB article for more information.

  • Get current logged in Windows user name

    Hi
    Is it possible to retrieve the current logged in Windows user name into a text field automatically?
    Thank you in advance for the help.

    Hi,
    This is a security issue and you will need a javascript file in the Acrobat folder. This will contain a trusted function allowing access to the login name.
    Here is a thread that looked at this:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2198084#2198084
    However read to the end, because if you are Reader Enabling the form (at least through Acrobat) then you may run into problems.

  • Blue screen when logging into windows server 2008 r2

    when logging into windows server 2008 r2, all I have is a blue screen and the mouse.
    I tried looking for solutions on the internet, then I found a microsoft hotfix "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2590550" I run the hotfix in command line but it gave me nothing, no error or success messages.
    I tried to reboot but I still have the same problem.
    Is there any solution to this problem ??

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Did you face this issue during remote session or console session?
    In addition, have you try to change or install any driver\software which cause this problem?
    Have you use any debugging tools from Microsoft to find respective error cause?
    You can refer following article for memory dump.

    When deleting an e-mail on Gmail, the display reverts to the Gmail log-in window. Internet Explorer does not have this problem. Firefox did not have this problem until a few weeks ago.

    Ernie,
    The OP appears to be concerned about sent messages in particular, which, as you know, wouldn’t be on the server no matter what the settings and would certainly be lost as a result of deleting the account.
    <hr>
    thesameage,
    Deleting a POP account only deletes the messages stored in the account’s mailboxes. If you move those messages to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes or to the mailboxes of another account, you won’t lose them. It’s not that Mail goes after your mail trying to delete as much as it can. It’s just that if a mail account is deleted, then its mailboxes cannot exist anymore...
    Here’s the title of some Mail Help articles that explain how to create “On My Mac” mailboxes and organize your mail there however you wish:
    Creating a mailbox
    Organizing your email
    Alternatively, a quick and simple procedure to create a duplicate of the account’s mailbox structure as “On My Mac” mailboxes would be importing them doing File > Import Mailboxes, choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and selecting the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver account folder.
    That said, instead of deleting the account right away, you can just disable it (i.e. turn OFF Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Enable this account), leave it that way for some time, and delete it only after making sure you didn’t miss anything while the account was disabled.
    BTW, if you back up your data, and the ~/Library/Mail folder in particular, you won’t have to worry about accidentally losing anything as a result of doing something like that...
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

    Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
    To a large extent, the difficultly can be related to the type of document you are trying to print -- and the application you are using to print that document.
    PDF documents can be tricky -- sometimes, especially if you are trying to print these from the Internet, PDF files can be stupid-hard to print because the format is messed up.
    You can take a look at the following - no garantees -- it might help you find something that will help nail down what is going wrong or maybe help you figure out a way to get what you need.  For example, if all else fails, you can perhaps take a Snip of the document on the screen, save the Image, and print that.  It is a sorry excuse for a workaround - but at least you end up with something on paper.

  • Possible reset safari and downloads window bug

    I have noticed, at different times on different macs...
    Reset safari, open the downloads window and the items in there do not clear out. In fact, it takes two reset Safari's to clear them out. Now, I have them set to download to desktop and not the downloads folder. I can reproduce 1 out of 3 times.
    Safari 3.1.2 and Safari 3.2
    Message was edited by: powerbook1701

    I have checked on multiple computers and even the Apple Retail store, the issue continues to happen, but there is no rhyme or reason what the trigger is:
    I have noticed with Safari 3.2 and 3.2.1 that when resetting Safari, the downloads window does not always clear out. Upon an additional reset, the window does clear out.
    If the downloads window was open, then you close it, reset safari, and then reopen the downloads window, whatever was there is still there (until you reset again).

  • BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

    Hi,
    We have a back up that is failing.
    The error is "BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE RPS. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.".
    As I understand it the backup application log is at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\LOG. From that all I get is
    2014-03-05 14:49:29.41 Backup      Error: 3041, Severity: 16, State: 1.
    2014-03-05 14:49:29.41 Backup      BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE myDb. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.
    The command I am using is
    BACKUP DATABASE [MyDb]

    WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT,  NAME = N'mydb-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 10

    The database is Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition (64-bit) Version 9.00.1399.06.
    The computer is Windows server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP2
    The Db is 191 Gb and there is 227 Gb available on the D drive where it's being backed up to.
    Any thoughts as to how I can track down the problem.
    Is the 227Gb of spare disk space big enough to back up a 191 Gb database?
    If not how much is needed?
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Can you apply latest service pack .I dont know but guess that can be issue.Once faced ,not quite sure.Also can you just make your command like
    BACKUP DATABASE [MyDb]
    TO DISK = 'D:\Domains\SQL_Backup\DB\myDb\Mydb_FullBackup_20140305_1100.bak'
    WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, STATS = 10

    If the user has already created a new AdobeID and tried to deleted file at the Application Support/Adobe/opm.db and it is still not working he should try this.
    you could suggest that the user closes all applications and Repair Disk Permissions on OSX:
    2. Open Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    3. Select your startup disk on the left of the Disk Utility window
    4. Select First Aid from the tabs
    Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button
    It is always a good idea to run Repair Disk Permissions on OSX after an update, say from 10.8 to 10.8.x.
    On Windows he can Run sfc /scannow In the command prompt.
    1. Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
    He could also try and disable any 3rd party firewall, antivirus programs. I hope this helps.

  • Logged in windows username cant be searched in LDAP tree on Windows 2000 AD

    That is my active directory of my TEST Windows 2000 server:
    http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/918/adwn6.gif
    On the image yu will find 4 schools with shortcut names called:
    OU=ASR
    OU=EDS
    OU=EKS (EK school for example)
    OU=THS (TH school for example)
    Under every OU="shortcut of schoolname" you will find also the
    OU=Klassen (Klassen = classes in english)
    OU=Lehrer (Lehrer = teacher in english)
    again under every OU="class" and OU="teacher" you will find also the
    pupils and teachers.
    the teacher "verena bit" is located in:
    "CN=verena bit,OU=Lehrer,OU=ASR,DC=Bodensee,DC=DE"
    On the REAL Windows 2000 server used in production i have about 17 schools like OU=ASR or OU=EDS and so on...
    My part aim for the first...:
    With Java code: String Lehrer = System.getProperty("user.name");
    I can retrieve the name of the teacher (Lehrer = teacher) who has logged into the Windows client. The problem is i get for example a String like
    "verenabit" but in the ldap hierarchy all common names are for example like this: cn="verena bit" they have always a " " gap between the forename and the lastname so I can not use the String "verenabit" to search for it in the ldap tree as she would not exist right?
    What i finally want is to find out the OU="shortcut of schoolname" (see above) by searching for the logged in teacher. So when i have OU="shortcut of schoolname" of the teacher i am able to read ONLY the usernames(teachers+pupils) of that specific school and not all teacher+pupils of all 17 schools what would be about 8000 users :-D
    Can someone help me please how can i use the username of the logged in windows user and search him effectively in the ldap tree on my test windows 2000 server.
    Steven you want all my points? ROFL ;-)

    Here's a hint.
    Use a generic ldap tool (for example ldp.exe which is
    included in Windows Server, or whatever your
    favourite ldap browser is, and find the object in the
    Active Directory that corresponds to the user named
    Verna Bit.
    Believe it or not, you will find an attribute which
    has matching value to that returned from
    System.getProperty("user.name");Then you just need to construct the relevant LDAP
    Query Filter.
    It ain't rocket science !
    Good luck.Yes i already use ldp.exe i installed it from the win2k server CD its a great tool :)
    hm your hint is odd or how can i say dont know wether you really understood me, because what you suggested to me is actually what i doubted that it could work. Seems you have more faith??
    The problem is (not sure wether you really understood me...) that when i search the whole Directory having 8000 user, I could search for teachers only which are in OU=Lehrer (Lehrer = teacher) and just go one childnode down but "verena bit" IS NOT "verenabit". I cannot search for the username verenatbit as i wont get any result as it does not exist.
