Odd scratch folder behavior...?

I have just set up several disk images on an internal drive to use for member scratch disks. When I set the virtual drive as the scratch location, FCP creates the proper folder structure as normal, but each folder is set to read only. So when a member tries to capture, they get an error. Now, of course I know how to set the folders to read and write, that is not what I am looking for here. What I would like to ask is, is there something I am missing? Why is FCP setting read only folders on these virtual disks? There is only one account on the computer and it is an admin account. Any ideas? Or am I stuck choosing Get Info and changing them one by one forever?
Thanks,
Matt

Actually, I think I figured it out when I went out to lunch, although I can't check until tomorrow.
The reason for using disk images as scratch locations is because I work for a community access cable station and the members are not responsible enough to administer their own folders, and space gets filled with files that are months old and no longer necessary. It falls on me to clean out the drive space and frankly, I am sick of cleaning up after people that have been told time and time again to clean up their own shiite.
But the images were all set to read and write. The issue, after a little thought, is that I copied some of the scratch folders from the original computer to the new one and they retained their original ownership and permissions.
I know it seems odd, but this is the only way I can force members who are largely computer illiterate to reset their scratch disks every time they log in. Now, if they screw up, I can delete their media without guilt and they will have been forwarned.
(Does that make me a bad guy...?
Thanks for the response anyway.

  • Odd Junk Mail Behavior

I've been experiencing odd Junk Mail behavior on my Mac; I've got the Mail app set so it puts the emails it thinks is Junk in the Junk folder. I do this because I've noticed that certain legitimate emails keep ending up in the Junk folder automatically.
I've also noticed that some of the emails in the Junk folder have not actually been flagged as Junk Mail, they were not colored brown by the Junk Mail rule and there is no button available to tell Mail it's not Junk. How do I stop Mail from flagging something as Junk when it doesn't seem to tag it as Junk but it still ends up in the Junk folder?
I see emails tagged as Junk in the Junk folder that are legit, so I click the "Not Junk" button and move them back to the proper mail folder. But the next time I get mail from the same source, it gets flagged and tagged as Junk again. I thought the Mail app learns from the training we give it. How do I resolve this situation?
I've already set the Junk filtering to not filter emails from recipients who are in my Address Book.

Either you’ve messed with the Preferences > Junk Mail > Advanced settings, or those settings have become corrupt, or you have one or more rules that have a bearing on this.
Assuming it isn’t the latter, try this:
    1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, disable junk mail filtering, then enable it again. This resets the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
    2. Choose either Training or Automatic mode (it doesn’t matter) and leave the other options checked. Click Advanced to see how the junk filter rule is defined now if you want, but don’t touch anything there.
    3. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).

  • Odd Calc Order Behavior

    Hello all,
I've put together a hybrid analysis cube and I'm experiencing some odd calc order behavior. It appears the years are calculating backwards.
I load my 2007 end balances and calc forward three years. 2008 is correct, but 2009 and 2010 are incorrect. They are incorrect inasmuch as the calcs that require 2008/2009 end balances are incorrect. So I run the script again and now 2009 is right, but 2010 is incorrect. Then I run it once more and 2010 is correct.
It appears the end balances for 2008 and 2009 aren't available for 2009 and 2010, respectively. Thus, I think 2010 is calcing first, but with no 2009 end bals, so it's off. Then 2009 goes, again no end bals, so it's off. Then 2008 calcs, and since 2007 end bals are in there, it's calcing correctly. Thus, I have to calc again two times for 2009 and 2010 to be correct.
    Here's my script:
    Fix (@IRSiblings("2008"),"ScenarioMbr")
    CALC ALL EXCEPT DIM("Years","Scenario");
    Endfix
ScenarioMbr is a level 0 descendant of the Scenario dimension.
Thanks for any help anyone has.

I would suggest checking on your outline order. It sounds like your ending balance hasn't been calculated by the time the beginning balance needs it (as evidenced by your three passes). The order of members in your FIX statement has no bearing on the calculation order. By this, I mean make sure that your Years dimension is ordered as follows...
    Years
    + 2007
    + 2008
    + 2009
    + 2010
Also, make sure that your periods (where your months are is, assuming it is a different dimension) is located above your Years dimension.
Lastly, how are you facilitating getting your Ending balances into your Beginning balances? Sometimes the sequencing for this type of work is improtant as well. For example, if your Ending Balance is a two-pass, it will not be ready until a second pass is done.
IF this doesn't help, maybe provide one of the BegBal members that isn't working, your outline order, the order of the Years dimension, and the dense/sparse settings (assuming BSO).
    Good Luck!!

  • Max number/size of QT files on one scratch folder

Is there a limit to the number of files in one scratch folder? Is it helpful to partition a big drive like I would on an Avid.
Can't seem to find any limits in the manual.
    John
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I wouldn't partition the drives unless they are sort of slow and old... it just takes up space. In the old Avid days I had, you needed to do this to keep video files off the slowest area of the arrays, but that isn't much the case anymore because the drives are so much faster than they used to be.
There is no limit to number of files either, just limited to your storage space.

So here i am facing issue after 2nd restart machine while seq'g.
    1. i have changed scratch folder "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp\1\Scratch" to "C:\Scratch" in seq'r -> Tools-> Options-> Scratch Directory.
    2. i have installed application, after i have restarted manually machine.
    3. seq'r started/launched as expected at monitor stage.
    4. after i have configured my application. like main exe (main.exe -i settings)
    5. i have restared machine manually 2nd time, but after restart machine i am getting error like "

I have re-installed to diff seq'r machine and by dafult scratch folder set as "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp\Scratch".
i have restarted twice machine, seq'r able to resume the status from scratch.
    My Observations:
    1. If scratch folder set by default "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp\Scratch"?
seq'r success/able to resume from scratch folder after multiple machine restart's.
    2. if scracth folder set by default "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp\1\Scratch"?
seq'r failed to resume from scracth folder! because after restart seq'r machine ""C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp\1"

  • Keep getting capture scratch folder in my capture scratch folder

In my system settings I have set capture scratch like this...MEDIA1:capture scratch. Of course MEDIA1 is one of my drives. But why am I getting a capture scratch folder in my capture scratch folder? Shane, I even carefully followed your instructions not to make the mistake of clicking the scratch folder. I just cannot fiqure this out.
    Best,
    Tom

thought i'd use this post to raise the whole issue of interface elements held over from bygone days ...
why, exactly, is this folder still referred to as a "scratch" folder. isn't the convention that "scratch" files are temporary? seems to me this is a remnant of old design where FCP 2 (i think) captured media to a temporary file and then moved it over ... modelled perhaps on photoshop's "scratch disk" temporary files? all sounds very temporary and makeshift. how about just a "final cut media" folder?
this is a bit irksome as final cut becomes more and more fussy about where it stores (and keeps) files.
    end of today's musing.
    R.

  • Scratch folder files ok to delete?

is it ok to delete the contents of the scratch folder when I quit final cut pro 5.1? There are a ton of files in there, but are they needed? I've been saving my movie files into a separate folder, so can I safely delete the scratch folder contents?
    thanks!

The scratch folder contains the original clips that you captured for a particular project. If you are finished with a project you can delete the footage, however if you ever want to revisit the project all of your files will be OFFLINE.
In order to do anything you will have to recapture the footage. This is easy enough if the footage involved was all originally shot and captured with timecode. Non tc sources such as VHS or anything else you may have captured using the noncontrolable device preset, can be recaptured but will not reconnect properly to your original timeline.
The general rule is you can dump any timecode captured material, but keep everything else, this includes any titles graphics or photos, music etc.
You can also detele any render files related to the completed project. Do this using Render Manager in FCP.

  • My clips went offline and disappeared from capture scratch folder

I was editing a project in final cut express, a movie of my newborn daughter, and was almost finished. The clips had bin logged and transferred into my sequence. Next morning started the nightmare; almost all the clips had vanished...
The timeline was full of red boxes that said media was offline. Clips i had rendered were still ok, and clips i had captured from another camera were playing.
Reconnecting the media did not work. The strange thing is that all the clips i had not used in timeline, but was located in the bin, are still ok. They are still in the capture scratch folder. Its just the clips i had used in timeline that are gone. I have searched my mac for the lost clips, but can`t find them. The clips are deleted from my camera, and i have no backup. Stupid me...
Has someone experienced something similar, or know what to to? Are my clips gone forever?
I have also tried to find i program that can recover deleted files from videocamera (avchd), but the programs i tried so far can just find jpeg files, no video...
    Hoping for an answer
    -Ola

    Hi Ian,
The directory is part of each hard drive's 'soft structure.' It is created when you partition & format the drive; and then constantly maintained & updated by the OS and drive controller as you use the drive. Just connecting an external HD to another Mac won't resurrect the directory.
DiskWarrior and similar utilities can help recover corrupted directories & lost files, but their success depends on the kind & degree of corruption. Most times when something happens to the directory, the files are still intact on the drive - that's why they can be recovered. However the likelihood of recovery decreases quickly if you continue to write to the drive after corruption occurs. That's why it's important to stop saving, copying or moving folders or files on the drive as soon as you notice a problem.

  • Importing photos, where is my capture scratch folder

Where is my Capture Scratch folder when I import photos?
I am making a claymation movie with about 2000 phtotos that I took with my digital camera. Here is my work flow:
    1. Import photos into iphoto - everything works fine
    2. Open FCP and create a new project.
    3. File>import>files>photos
    4. I select all the photos>choose
    5. Photos are imported into FCP browser.
Question: I checked my capture scratch and there is no file and no photos. I want to be organized and keep media in one location. I have captured videos from a camera and everything works like it should be.

Newer versions of iPhoto store the pictures in a "Bundle", a special type of folder. Applications use the same method to store their individual components. Normally, bundles can only be opened from the Finder by right clicking and choosing "Show Package Contents" from the drop down menu.
Tampering with, renaming or moving the bundle in iPhoto's Library can render it unusable and you might no longer be able to access your pictures.
Now that they are in there, your best option is to go through the pictures in the iPhoto interface, select which ones you want to use and export them in their native size to another location, such as FCP's Capture Scratch folder, as per previous posts.
How you do this depends which version of iPhoto you have, but it will be either via File > Export or by using the Share menu bar item. This will of course copy the pictures.
For the future, dismiss iPhoto when it starts up with your camera or SD card connected. Instead, launch *Image Capture* from the Applications folder. The interface is largely self-explanatory. You will be able to import the pictures directly to a location of your choosing.

  • PS scratch & ram behavior

When does photoshop go to scratch disk? Just when available ram is used up?
How does PS behave when the scratch disks are inadequate? Is there a way to monitor all of this?
Is there a way to monitor the speed of the scratch disk behavior? Would that be your standard read write test utilities?

Okay, go back to the pdf guide, I think it covers those questions.

  • Odd file move behavior

On my startup disk, I have a movie file (.mov) and a folder I want to collect movies in. Straightforward enough.
So I click/drag the .mov file onto the folder. It shows me the green + icon, and when I let go, it COPIES the file into the folder, not by simply MOVING the file from the disktop to the folder. Wha?
When I grab that same file in the folder and move it to the disktop, it works as expected, insisting that it must be DUPLICATED, replacing the disktop, original file.
OK. So instead of doing that, I decide to trash the original file, then move the version out of the folder and back to the disktop.
In order to do that, I use the contextual menu that drops down with Control+mouse click. It now asks me for my administrator password to do the trash move. (???)
Once the original has been tossed, the file will now move from folder to disktop and back to folder with complete impunity. But if I try this with another .mov file, the process starts all over again.
No extra key combo during the original move gets rid of the + icon.
    Permissions were repaired. No change.
Log off was cycled, no change.
Obviously somehow this disk has picked up wierdness when Leopard replaced well-tempered Tiger on it, but where is the checkbox that dumps this odd behavior?
No Right-click on the mighty mouse will bring down the contextual menu at all.

Yea! The Mac is back on track!
It took extra innings and a visit to 1 800 APL CARE to get to the bottom of it, but this therapy should be on everyone's A-list: The Install disk's version of Disk Utility is significantly different from any version you can install on your hard drives. Or so it would appear.
Where the Disk Utility can be there for you on two different hard drives connected to the same computer, running it from different drives is not at all the same - in visible results - as running it directly from the OS X Install Disk.
You can have several disks with OS X on them and run Disk Utility on your main startup disk from those, but they won't find all the messy permissions that are gumming up your system.
It took yet another previous back up Restore cycle, an extra clean install, followed immediately by an Install Disk run of Disk Utility's First Aid/Repair Disk Permissions to clear the cobwebs. Frequent re-weedings (after any program installs or upgrades from anybody, including Apple's own) finds more things to fix. Not always, but frequently.
The Install Disk's Disk Utility--it's not just for breakfast any more.

  • Odd Exchange notes behavior

I'm trying to get access to Notes from Microsoft Exchange on my iPhone 2g with the 2.0 firmware, but am noticing some odd behavior.
The phone is set to receive push email from my work Exchange webmail server. It is currently sending and receiving emails just fine. However, if I create a note on a desktop running Outlook and then tell the phone to sync the notes folder (which it sees), nothing shows up.
On the other hand, if I send myself an email to the same account, then move the message into the notes folder via the iPhone, the messages will appear in the notes folder on both the device and the Outlook client.
But if I move that same email via the Outlook client and sync the folder on the iPhone, the email will not show up. Am I missing something?

  • Odd subversion client behavior - has anyone seen this?

We are using DW CS4 with the subversion client for version control. One of our developers, working on a mac with OS X v 10.5.6, sees odd behavior when using 'Put' to send a file from his local copy to either a testing server or the remote site. What happens is - any unopened folders in the local copy get + signs indicating they don't exist in the svn repository. The  + signs don't appear if the folder is already opened, and they go away on a refresh or on switching between any of the left pane sites (test, remote and repository).  I tried replicating this behavior on a windows box (virtual machine running w2K server 2003 SP 2, terminal services, accessed via RDP) but could not replicate.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Is it a harmless annoyance or something more? Any feedback would be great- thank you!

Thanks, appreciated.  I was just looking for somebody to put this in perspective.
I've also seen performance & stability issues with the SVN client - it chokes if you try to check out too many files at once, for example when first populating a local copy from a repository.  I would be interested to know if Adobe has a set of best practices for initial setup of repositories and local copies as this would be very helpful, especially for large sites where there might be some valuable ways to save time in setup.

    - This behavior is seen on both 5Ks
    - I've tried using a different set of ports, changed SFPs, and fibre cabling to no avail
    - I can't seem to understand this behavior?!  In that, why would configuring the port cause the link to go down?
    - If anyone has experience this before, or could shed some light on this behavior, it would be appreciated.

    I had identical issue
Two interfaces on two different FEXes were INACTIVE. I have two Nexus 5596 in vPC and A/A FEXes.
    I also use config-sync feature.
Very same configuration was applied to other ports on other FEXes and they were working with no problems.
    interface Ethernet119/1/1
      inherit port-profile PP-Exchange2003
I checked VLAN status associated with this profile and it was active (of course it was, other ports were ok).
I solved it by removing port profile from this port and re-applied it... voila, port changed state to up!
    Very very strange.

  • Odd/Limited Mouse Behavior

I have an intermittent problem with my mouse behavior in 10.6. Actually, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem in 10.5, it's just a fiendishly intermittent problem that has an as yet undetermined cause & solution. All I know is that it occasionally occurs and eventually resolves itself.
What happens is that I can still click things, scroll, right click to open a more extensive menu, etc., but certain ancillary (yet surprisingly critical) functionality stops working for a time.
For example, hovering my mouse over a link in Safari does not turn the pointer into a "hand with an extended index finger" or does not cause embedded pop up messages to appear (on sites I'm familiar with, no less, so I know they have them). On my Safari browser tabs, the 'x' to close individual tabs does not appear unless I first click on a tab once, and it closes when I click it a second time.
In menus - anywhere, not just in Safari - clicking on File or Edit or View opens the window, but selections do not highlight and track my mouse movements the way they normally do. This makes submenus impossible to use without clicking and holding once I reach the submenu I want to open, and releasing the click when I reach the option I want to select.
The Dock, which I have set to Show/Hide based on my mouse movements, will not pop up when I move my mouse all the way to the bottom of the screen. If I click my mouse once while the pointer is essentially invisible (being at the extreme bottom of the screen), the Dock will sometimes appear, but not always. When it does appear, the icons in the dock do not enlarge/magnify based on my lateral mouse movements the way they normally do.
In iTunes, when I'm watching a TV show or movie in full screen mode, the controller does not appear when I move my mouse the way it normally does.
    And so on.
I have never found a working remedy for this affliction, I usually just have to ride it out, i.e., I deal with the limited functionality until something decides to work right again. I have reset my mouse (it's a wireless Logitech mouse with five buttons, including the scroll wheel, but I had a wired mouse way back in Leopard), I have restarted my Mac, reset Safari, reset my System Preferences, repaired Disk Permissions, I have even junked the entire Preferences folder and restarted. I have also switched to different mice, but they have the same problem while the problem is occurring.
I don't believe this is a settings issue, I think it has something to do with Java or something, which occasionally goes on a holiday.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I've been enduring the issue the last day and a half and this is the longest it's ever lasted without correcting itself.

Check for any dust in the LED hole. Try using a plain surface, like a solid colored mouse pad, if the surface is on the shiny side. If that does not work...
Try starting up from Mac OS X installation disc. If the mouse is also erratic when booted from another system, you can rule out the 10.5.3 update as the cause.
If it works normally when you are booted from the installation disc, there is probably some issue with your current installation.
