Odd screen corruption only with admin account?

I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm having an odd screen corruption issue on my Mac Pro 2.0. As the cursor passes the mid point of my midpoint of the screen, the screen will "jump" or "shift" and add a row or column of pixels to the monitor. Any text or graphics around the these newly created rows will become corrupt or appear doubled. Also the cursor will behave very oddly. When rolling over a text field in an application sometimes the arrow won't convert to the text entry icon, the entry icon will appear superimposed on the arrow icon.
At first i thought it was a hardware issue (video card going bad ) but Hardware Test came back clean. As a last resort I created a new user and voila! the corruption goes away when logged in under the new user! I'm assuming there is a corrupted file somewhere associated with the admin user account. Obviously I can't delete the user as it's the owner/admin account. Any place I can start looking where the offending file might be found?
Mark

Hmm, I've got screen zoom turned off so I don't think that's it. Now some of my icons are coming up corrupted, but again, only when I'm logged into my admin acct. Is there a preference file that in the user/~/library/preferences file that i could toss and see if it helps? I could always just toss the whole preference files folder after backing up and then try replacing them one at a time but I'd rather not do that if I have a choice.

Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.
    4) restart Numbers

However, this happens only with my account. Other users have no such problem. I have also tried going to the "Add-ons" dialogue box through "Tools" then "Options." • Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server - can't login with admin account

SO....i was having problems setting up network accounts from my mac Mini Server. I took it to the Apple Genius bar one night after work to get some help on why the login screen appears for Other..but could not login into any of the accounts I created.
They made an appt for me for the next morning since they had a "guy" that could help the next morning.
When I got there for my second appt..they said they don't support server issues. Only consumer products..I though the server WAS and i WAS a consumer of their products..so..they gave me a number of a consultant..of course..for pay...
So later that day I was trying some other configurations....the power came out while I was checking a monitor cable..and when I restarted I couldn't login to the master admin account.
Since mac mini server doesn't have a DVD drive..you have to boot up with their Server DVD from another computer and the Server installs it through airport.
So I did the boot up via airport from the server install DVD.
Did the Utility disk repair AND password changed. Got some error about not being to able to login if I don't change the keychains to the account.
    Rebooted the server.
    It didn't work.
So now stuck with a login window..and NO ACCESS to change anything.
    HELP!!!!

You can access to system with root account.
If you didn't enable before, boot from SLS DVD and activate from menu (after choose language).
After that, reset all the passwords (there is a menu to do that).
After that exit from installer and reboot.
At login screen you can try to login with your user and new/blank password.
If it fails, you have to login with user root and the password you choose before.
With root user, you can access to all system, be very carefull.
Now you can create a new user and import all the files (you have to do a little work with permissions)
    I hope i help you!

  • Mac Mini display is too large for screen on only one user account

Okay, so I left my two year olds alone for a minute playing the "alphabet game" on my Mac Mini. They only had the keyboard, no mouse but managed to muck up my display leaving me a bit frustrated.  The screen is now too large for my Samsung display. The only way to see everything (dock, top bar, etc) is to move my mouse arrow to the end of my display and see it roll back onto the page.  I've checked the settings there and they are fine. The MacBook Pro plugs right in and is proper resolution. So I then wondered if another account on the Mac Mini would do the same thing. I logged out of my Admin account and into another and everything looks just dandy. I log back into my Admin account and it's too large and blurry again. The resolution is set correct at 1920x1080 at 60 Hz.
What button did they push on my keyboard that would do this and how do I get it back?? Aargh! Thanks all!

Ha, figured it out myself from another discussion forum finally. Thoght I'd share in case anyone else runs into this. They must have hit "Zoom" by htting the "Control" and scroll buttons at the same time..
    Resolution:
You can zoom out by holding down the Option and Command buttons on the keyboard and, while you hold them down, pressing the - key.

  • Adobe 9 opens PDF online only in admin account

Okay, this is very strange and I've tried the last two days to figure this out:) Probably something very easy that I overlooked. This is what happens...
It is not ALL PDF docs that don't display. Most do. But there's a military web site to view fitness reports that only downloads and displays PDF docs in admin mode. When I click on the PDF document in user account it opens a new page and appears to be downloading the PDF to be displayed. But then, the browser only displays a blank white page and says "Done" in the bottom status bar of the browser. Now when I'm in admin account... It opens up no questions asked.
This is what I have done so far. I have tried unchecking the "Display PDF in browser", uninstalled 9.0 and reinstalled, uninstalled acrobat(have not reinstalled), uninstalled 9.0 and installed 8.1.3, deleted the 2 registry folders that adobe recommends and repaired it...
I believe that's all I've done so far. Is there an access problem? Maybe plugins? But I'm almost positive user account has the adobe plugin because it can open other PDF docs from the web with no problem...
I'd appreciate any advice. I havn't read many problems like this one out there. Someone posted this very problem on experts exchange but no one answered. Said he fixed it by rolling back to 8.0 and that didn't work for me:(

I've been having the same problem with pdfs I create from either InDesign CS4 or Word docs through Word 2007 (both 97-2003 and 2007 docs), which are then accessed through links on our webpages. The IE browser window comes up blank displaying Done accompanied by a blank error dialogue box with a question mark and an OK button.
We're still diagnosing the why and hows, and whether outsiders accessing these links have the same problem, but I've found if you click the OK and refresh the browser a couple of times, and give it some time to load, the pdf shows eventually. Once it's cached it shows every time (at least for me).
Firefox doesn't seem to have the same problems so using that will help most people.
I'll write again when and if I have further info on this.

  • Does disabling specific OS functionality in Terminal with Admin account affect standard users too?

    Hello,
I am performing some security enhanacements and had a question:
Is it safe to assume that any service-disabling Terminal command that I enter under my Admin account will affect all standard users as well?  I other words, any string that includes "System/Library/LaunchDaemon..." etc will affect all standard users too, right?  I am presuming that if the services I am disabling were only for individual user logins, the string would start with 'user' and not 'system.'  Is this correct?
I disabled all that I wanted under my Admin account, but am wondering if I need to do the same for each standard account too (which would pose a problem because the standard accounts don't have 'sudoer' access) . . .
    Thanks!

any string that includes "System/Library/LaunchDaemon..." etc will affect all standard users too, right?
Yes. I suggest you make yourself completely familiar with the OS X startup process before you start making changes.

  • Problems with Admin Account but not Test Account?

I recently installed my applications into this new MacBook Pro and it was working fine. After a few days Photoshop began acting up and after spending time with Adobe, it was determined that the Test Account is working properly but my Admin account is not. I reinstalled my Operating System but the same issue persists. There are three Framework permissions that won't repair in disk utility, would this have anything to do with it?
    What else should I try?
    Thanks for your help.

    Greetings,
If 1 user account has an issue but another does not then that would suggest something has changed in that user. Reinstalling has no effect on user specific issues (usually) as applications are usually system wide.
If it is only Adobe Applications that are acting strange, Adobe should be able to tell you what user specific files Photoshop has and where they are located. Personally I would contact them back before blindly yanking files (they make their software after all. They should know best what files might be important.)
However if you are feeling adventurous:
You could start by removing user specific files:
Your User > Library > Caches (restart after pulling this to the trash)
Your User > Library > Preferences > Adobe and/or com.adobe files (restart after removing)
This article might also be of use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
    Hope that helps.

  • Unable to modify/replace/unlock hosts file with admin account

    Hi all,
I'm having a serious issue when trying to modify the hosts file in Yosemite 10.10.3
I already tried through the terminal with sudo commands, Get Info window, editing the file externaly and then trying to replace the original hosts with the new but nothing works. Already repaired the disk permisions in case it had to be with the issue but didn't help.
I'm using an account with admin privileges but it seems I'm not allowed to unlock the file.
Here is a screenshot of how the GetInfo windows looks like for the hosts file:
And here is what I get when trying to save from sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Any help will be highly welcomed.

         sudo chflags nouchg /private/etc/hosts
and relock it when you've finished
         sudo chflags uchg /private/etc/hosts
    It's locked for a reason.

  • Freezing during start up - only on admin account

I have two accounts enabled on my Macbook Pro: One main account which is the admin, and one for my boyfriend to use.
A few nights ago I downloaded a pdf file from an email and the computer froze. (the file download could just be a huge coincidence) I restarted and when I try to log in under my Admin account, everything loads, but I can't do anything; The cursor just stays as the spinning wheel as if it's loading, but nothing ever loads.
When I login using the other account everything works fine. What's going on? How can I fix this?
I've tried safe mode but it just does the same thing.

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

We have three accounts set up on our machine. Two of the accounts are working just fine. The third is having issues! I'm new at this - just started with the new mac back in March, and I have no idea where to even turn for help. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you might be willing to give!
    Vivian

    Hi again Viv,
Bare with me, this is a bit longwinded.
It is actually an account I set up for my daughter who has limited computer knowledge.
She was using iChat - and according to her, she just assumed I turned
off the internet and iChat on her.
Hmm yes, you must of turned it off w/ your magic powers;)
Ok thanks, for the info, not an admin account.
Yes, those are the correct files you moved.
Are you running a ppc mac or a new Mac intel?
    - Lets concentrate on Safari first, then ichat.
Do all the accounts, admin included, have Safari on the Desktop?
    If so move them back.
And, I believe I have moved Safari into the application window.
The icons appear for a folder called Safari and Safari.app both appear.
Now I tried to reset the preferences but could not open
Ok, The plist file will be recreated when Safari is opened, should I presume it opened but you could not Go to Safari Preferences?
Let try to resolve the two Safari icons in the Application folder, first.
Is the Finder Window titled "Applications" on top? (see image posted)
Click on the Safari.app (that is the proper extension for Safari)
I trust that is the Application, the other maybe an alias icon,
is there a little arrow on the Safari icon without the.app extension?
To see which is the real Safari application....
    In the Finder, Application window,
Click once onSafari.app to highlight it,
Now click on the " ⌘" (Command key)
    along with the "g" + "i" keys a "Get Info"should open,
What is the size & date created of the Safari.app icon?
    Does the system own it?
Check the same on the other,
What is the size & date created of the other Safari icon
If there is a goodly amount of difference in size & date created
move the one with the smaller size & most recent date,
to the "Moved Folder" you created.
    ------------Now------
Make sure all Applications in the Dock show to be QUIT no black triangles under the Icons.
    Now in the Applications window,
Do you see the "Utilities Folder", double click to open that
Look for the "Disk Utility", double click to launch it.
See the HD in the left side bar.
    Click on the HD.
Once you click on it, you will see the toolbar,
    Click on "First Aid" tab
Now click on button "Disk permissions repair" which is also on the left side of the window, run "repair' not verify.
Let it run do not disrupt it, if it has not been run before it should take some time
When it stops running, if you receive any errors,
    Run repair permissions again.
When you get the Message that the Permissions have been repaired or verified, form the Disk Utility menu bar,
    Under Disk Utility, click quit.
    Now under the 
Click on Restart, when the mac has restarted, restart it once more.
let us know if you have any questions.

  • Can not connect with ADMIN account

    Hi,
I've installed HTML DB on 10g, but when I open up http://localhost:7777/pls/ htmldb/htmldb_admin and put in password (which works on sqlplus) it says ID... is wrong?
    cheers,
    Bernhard
P.S. I couldn't find the correct forum for HTML DB?
Edited by: boffman on 01.10.2008 22:17

    Hello,
    HTMLDB got renamed to APEX.
You can upgrade your HTMLDB version to APEX fairly easily. You find the download here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/download.html
Installation instructions are included. You get so much more with the new version of APEX that I think it's really worth your time to do the upgrade.
About your login problem: can you try to login in the INTERNAL account with ADMIN? There's also a reset password available.
    Regards,
    Dimitri

  • IMovieQuits on Launch... only for Admin account

    Hi
Just installed iMovie 6.02... but as Admin it Quits Uexpectedly on launch (as it's loading the last project...)
I've deleted prefs, repaired permissions, etc etc.
New Admin users are fine ... as are managed users....
The crash report mentions iTues in the crashed thread report.
    Thread 4 Crashed:

    3 libSystem.B.dylib 0x9002bc28 pthreadbody + 96
I deleted all iTunes prefs (including the ones in the ByHost folder) but it didn't make any difference.
All other iLife 06 apps run fine.
Not a show stopper... but I want to know why!!!
    Thanks for any thoughts
    Lee

    Try this:
Quit iMovie. Delete its prefs file at the admin accounts home folder at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie... (or something like that -- I'm at a Windows box right now). Then launch iMovie and rebuild its prefs as you like.

  • ARD 3.3, cannot unlock screen saver using alternate admin account on 10.6

I have some machines that are running 10.6. Sometimes users are logged in, with the screen locked. I make sure that a password is required to unlock the screensaver. I should be able to take over these machines and unlock the screen with an administrator account. That is not working on more than one machine that is running 10.6. That is hosing up my ability to support them until I can get the user to unlock the screen for me.

The reason this is an issue is that end users have to be administrators in order to install software updates by themselves. It is not a good practice to have local users running as admins, but that is unfortunately necessary in some environments. Anyone know how to remotely kill the screen saver process as root through ssh?

  • Does UCCX 8.5.1 Historical Reporting Client run only with admin rights?

I installed UCCX 8.5.1 Historical Reporting Client on a Windows Vista machine. When I try to open it as a regular user, it gives me an error message "Unexpected error: Quitting". I can only open it when I log into the machine as administrator. Does anyone know this is the normal behaviour? If so, then every supervisor of my contact center will need to have admin rights in the computer?

    hi,
The Historical Reports client uses Windows's secondary logon service.  It uses this to run
the software with the CiscoHistRptUsr when the agent or supervisor is logged into the PC
with their own account.  This is the service that gives you the Run As option when you
right click on executables. Check to see if they have this ability on the PC, and make
sure the "Secondary Logon" service shows as Started in the Windows services (Run -->
    Services.msc)"
So, on one of the PCs with the issue, look for Secondary Login: Start >Settings >
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to Secondary Logon and
verify that this service is started.
Also, if the service is running, please look for the application, right click on it and
    select "Run as Administrator"
    Hope that helps!
    Thanks,
    Karthik
