Odd: Sidebar has my "computer Name with a (3) after it.

Hi,
Could someone tell me why in the finder window sidebar that it shows my computer name with a (3) after it?
"Computername"(3)
It has been running a little wacky in the last few months.iMac20" iMac 2.1
Thanks for your input.

I think this occurs when your network connection fails or changes, and then on re-establishing, the old name lingers on the Mac without being flushed, held in a cache perhaps and so it mistakenly thinks it is another of the same name.
That yours has a three after it, tends to support this view that the same name has been reconnected for a third time. I don't understand much more than that.
As JollyGiant says, just edit it back to how it should be.

  • Creating computer Names with small letters and they appear as capitals in Active Directory Domain

    Hello,
    When I try to create computer objects in Active Directory - namely when i change computer name with small letters, in active directory users and computers they appear as capital letters and in DNS console as well.
    I know that it's not a problematic issue and technically all goes fine but, i want to know the reason.
    Is it possible to change computer name with small letters while joining in the domain and than in AD it appear with small letters also ?
    Thanks in advance,

    If you are asking about during the client join process, I believe the machines do all caps and you have to accept that as default.  I'm guessing it is a legacy issue for older clients that has hung on such as possibly related to WINS.

  • My sister has a computer authorized with my account

    my sister has a computer authorized with my account and some of the purchases i made were downloaded to her computer accidentally, how do i get those purchases on my computer?

    Ask her to send the purchases to you; except for rented movies, you can find the location of an item by right-clicking it and choosing Get Info. The files can be sent as if they were any other type of file, but need to be dragged into the open iTunes window afterwards.

  • Has anyone had trouble with dropped calls after downloading the IOS 7

    has anyone had trouble with dropped calls after downloading the IOS 7

    I downloaded mountain lion and then iPhoto '11 in order to tap into iCloud capabilities with all of my devices. (My Mac was outdated in regards to operating platform to do this). After installing iPhoto 11, I had to repair and rebuild my library of photos.  However, after doing this, all of my albums were jumbled and, while I can see the image thumbnail, when I click on the thumbnail, and error that looks like a black triangle and gray exclamation pops up as opposed to the larger hi def image I want to view.

  • Computer Name With Number

    I was a beta tester of Yosemite and recently updated to retail.  This happened while I was a beta tester and I thought it would go away, but it hasn't.  My computer name is being followed by a (#) that continues to increase for no reason (e.g. (1), (2), (3), etc.) - any ideas?

    I'm having the same issue with my iMac (early 2008) and MacBook Pro (2010). It's very weird, both machines insist on appending numbers in parentheses to the end of the Computer name: in the Sharing preference panel. However the name  given beneath that in the message "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: <computer-name>.local" does not include the number, just the normal hostname.local. Also, using hostname command in terminal returns the regular <computer-name>.local without a number.
    If I remove the (n) at the end of the Computer name: field it only lasts a few seconds before changing back to a number (though the number is not always the same as before, sometimes it goes to (2) or (3) rather than the (4) it was originally.
    If I open a Finder window with the sidebar showing I see under Devices an entry for "<computer-name> (4)" and under Shared it shows:
    <computer-name>
    <computer-name> (2)
    <computer-name> (3)
    I have screen and file sharing enabled, I tried switching them off and on again, I've tried rebooting, nothing seems to stop it appending the number and I can't get rid of the <computer-name> (2) and <computer-name> (3) entries under Shared either.

  • Export list of windows computer names with a specific relationship

    I'm trying to export only the name (netbios name) of a list of windows computers to a text file if it meets the following criteria.
    Relationship Type = "RelatedConfigItem" >  Name = "Example A"
    In other words, if the windows computer is related to another configuration item (Environment CI) with the name "Example A" it exports the computer name to a text file.  I beleive this can be done via powershell but I'm a bit new at powershell.
    Any thought on how this would be accomplished?

    Alexander,
    This is great! One issue...  When forming a relationship between a Windows Computer CI and an Environment CI it forms a one way relationship (even
    though it shows in the related items tab on either CI).
    Per Travis Wright...
    "Every relationship type has a source and target class.  For example the System.ConfigItemRelatesToConfigItem has a configuration
    that looks like this:
    This
    relationship type is a little special because it has the same class as the target and the source. So, what happens is when you create a relationship from the context of the environment form it sets the source object as the environment and the target object
    as the computer. When you create the relationship from the context of the computer form it set the source object as the computer and the environment as the target."
    All that to say, we form our relationship from the Windows Computer (source) to the Environment (target).  As such, when running the powershell
    script you provided it produces no results.
    Is there a way to reformat the script to identify Windows Computers that meet the same criteria...
    windows computer with relationship to environment A exports windows computer netbios name
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Changing the Computer name with ARD

    Hello, I am new to mac but I am now in charge of running a mac network or machines for an art department. I see that with ARD you cna change the computer name. If you change the computer name does it just change anything on the client machine? I just want to change the name in my All computers name so its easier to identify each users machine.

    There are four User-fields that you can enter information into with ARD. What I've done in the past is put the primary user of a computer into one of those fields. That way the user doesn't appear in the machine name, but I can still easily access this information.
    Note that if these computers are also in a Workgroup Manager group, that WGM will just change the name back on you. You would need to rename the computer through Workgroup Manager for this name change to take affect.

  • Computer name with number within brackets

    Hello
    Since we have alle our computers connected to an Snow Leopard Server over Open Directory, we have an cosmetic problem which I am not able to solve.
    In the System Preferences/Sharing/ the Computer Name is greyed. When the Computer crashed and rebooted the Computer Name ist still greyed but a Number between brackets is show (e.g. Example Computer (3).
    I am not able to delete this (3) even if I delete the Network-Account-Server (and disconnect from the  and reboot I am still not able to delete this Number between the brackets.
    Is their a way to fix this problem ? Do other person have the same Problem?
    Regards

    Here's the duplicate host names discussion that Kery O was likely recalling; this case is usually some sort of a loop, whether via a switch, via multiple network paths (wired and WiFi, etc), or otherwise.
    If this is a stale entry due to the crash and not a network loop of some sort, then I'd expect that shutting down the problematic host and then tossing a HUP at the DNS service (cache flush) on each of the other hosts will clear this.  (sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder)  Or leave it alone, and let it clear itself out over time.
    And Kery O, the behaviour around sleep?  Might that have been the sleep proxy (Airport and Time Capsule) that you're remembering?

  • Simply get computer name with serial number

    Hi All,
    I use the script below to get serial number, but I have no idea how to get the computer name in the meantime.
    Pls point me.
    $File = [System.IO.File]::OpenText("d:\111.txt")
     while($Machine = $GuyFile.ReadLine())
    {Get-WmiObject -computername $Machine win32_SystemEnclosure }
    $GuyFile.Close()

    Hello Andrejs,
    Try this, May be the formatting would be little off.. but you shud get the results.
    function Get-ServerInfo {
    PROCESS {
    $computername = $_
    $data = Get-WmiObject -class Win32_logicalDisk -ComputerName localhost | Select PSComputerName, DeviceID,@{n='Size(GB)';e={$_.size / 1gb -as [int]}},@{n='Free(GB)';e={$_.Freespace / 1gb -as [int]}}
    $bios = Get-WMIObject -Class Win32_BIOS
    $value = $data + $bios
    $value | select PSComputerName, DeviceID,SerialNumber,'Size(GB)','Free(GB)'
    Get-Content c:\servers.txt | Get-ServerInfo | Format-Table -auto
    It generates, computername, Drives , Size of drives, free space (in GB), serial number

  • My iMac's computer name keeps changing automatically after Yosemite upgrade

    This started happening once I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite. It will add numbers to the name of my iMac.
    Example: It starts off as say "My iMac"
    Then a half day later, it changes to "My iMac (2)"
    Then the next day it will be "My iMac (3)"
    And if I open the Finder window, it will show "My iMac" and "My iMac (2)" under "Shared" but if you click on them, nothing happens.
    When I go to System Preferences > Sharing the computer name will have the number there "My iMac (3)" and say it can be found as MyiMac-3.local
    If I change it back to just "My iMac", the number process starts all over again. I even tried naming the iMac something it was never named before and the same process occurs with the adding of the numbers.
    Anyone know how I can fix this?

    Have had the same issue with an iMac and MacBook Pro, both with Yosemite (MacBook upgraded from the Yosemite public beta). Both previously had Mavericks, and at one time or another would have had both Ethernet cable and Wifi on. This issue has only occurred since the upgrade to Yosemite. I do not use iCloud, so I believe that may be irrelevant and merely coincidental.
    The solution provided by an Apple Care rep seems to have resolved the issue. Has stuck now on both machines for the last few hours. Time will tell for certain, but here's what we did:
    - in System Preferences > Sharing, remove the (2) [or whatever is extra; mine was iMac (2), so I removed the (2)
    - exit Preferences
    - shutdown
    - restart machine in Recovery mode (machine off, press and hold Command + R, power on, when Apple logo appears release keys)
    - may take a few minutes to boot (depends on machine generation/speed, RAM and such)
    - open Disk Utility
    - select the OS disk (mine was Macintosh HD; selected the 'indented' item)
    - run Verify Disk Permissions
    - when finished run Repair Disk Permissions
    - restart
    On the MacBook I tried turning on Wifi and so far so good.
    Banish the deux!

  • Automating computer name with Serial appended?

    I have  questions and please bear with me if I'm asking the wrong question or seem ignorant -- I'm not that familiar with Windows 7 imaging and wim files yet.
    Question: How can I automate the naming of the computer I'm imaging by calling it something like "PHX-LP-" with serial number (dell service tag)? I know how to retrieve service tag via Powershell. So I'd want the computer to be named something like: PHX-LP-1Y78B6
    (where 1Y78B6 is the service tag of the Dell). I believe this value is obtained from Get-WmiObject -class win32_bios.
    I already created and captured an image using sysprep then imagex with WAIK and IMAGEX booting off USB.
    To apply the image I boot off the WinPE 3 USB and then run a batch script that diskpart's and applies and makes bootable.
    Do I need to mount the wim file and edit the  startnet.cmd to run special commands?
    If I need to use an answer file, does that mean I need to re-capture my build? Or can I have an answer file for WinPE
    that does this, and doesn't alter the answer file I used with sysprep when I initially was sysprepping/capturing the image?

    I used vbs script that assigned names based on single pass scheduled mapping NAME to MAC address. This scheduled task was triggered at the first logon. This script included restart that is neccessary to fix new name. Script read data file containing two
    columns, MAC address in the first comlumn and name in the second.
    Regards
    Milos
    So did you add this scrip to like the SetupComplete.cmd in windows\setup\scripts?
    Or you put a shortcut to the vbscript somewhere in Windows like the startup folder?
    I could think of a way to manually do it with powershell, I just wasn't sure if I absolutely need to get WDS/MDT/ConfigMgr to do this type of thing.
    I think something like:
    $comp=gwmi win32_bios
    $servicetag=$comp.SerialNumber
    Then name computer some how based on "PHX-LP-" & $servicetag ?
    Not sure if I can name and join domain with 1 reboot, though. I know I can manually through the Network ID wizard GUI

  • How can i retrieve a computer name with a java code

    hello friends,
    please, can i get help on how i can rtrieve the name of a computer(any at all) using java - a code will be appreciated.
    i also wish to ask if you know how i can use the JFileChooser class, such that when i click on a file to select it and then click on the open button, the file will open / show in a TextArea which i have already created.
    Moreso, how can i use the JFileChooser to save something i've written in a TextArea, as file to a system.
    thanks in advance for your useful advice. quite grateful.

    'result' is a String I think.
    As for your JFileChooser question...
    Create your take the file returned from JFileChooser, open it in a BufferedReader (I'm assuming it's text as you want to display it in a JTextArea) then read the lines out.
    JFileChooser fc = new JFileChooser();
    fc.showOpenDialog(null);
    File file = fc.getSelectedFile();
    if (file != null) {
    try {
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
    String inputLine;
    String total = "";
    while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null)
    total+=inputLine;
    in.close();
    textarea.setText(total); // textarea = your JTextArea
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.err.println("Error: "+e);
    }
