Odd Sound Behavior After 10.6.2 Update

I've had a few odd sound issues since updating to 10.6.2:
1) Volume is set at 50% after some reboots (I normally have it set at 12.5%). This has happened about 1/2 the time after reboots (which have unfortunately been much more often in 10.6).
2) While iTunes is playing the sound stops and the sound icon in the menu bar greys out. iTunes keeps 'playing' but I don't get any sound. This lasts for 5 - 10 seconds and happens a few times an hour but without any predictability.
It may happen at times that iTunes isn't playing and I just don't notice it. It has happened while the system as announcing the time as well. This may be the cause of sound issue #3 but I haven't caught the sound icon in a 'grey state' when the notification sounds don't play yet.
When the sound icon is grey I get the beach ball and Safari doesn't respond (standard 'Application not responding' message). Other apps seem to work while this is happening (Finder, System Prefs - including sound panel, FireFox, etc).
3) Some expected sounds used for feedback in Finder & Mail don't always work. This is very intermittent and may be happening more often then I notice these are notification sounds and I don't realize that I've missed them. I don't know if it's associated to the sound failure mentioned in #2.
~
I've also had some other odd behavior:
* System won't wakeup from sleep (not always but often enough to require several reboots in the last week).
* Safari just eats up RAM.
* Safari has locked up for no apparent reason (no clue as to what sets it off).
* Safari has locked up while using a Java applet. This only happens on occasion but always happens when launching a GoToMyPC session (GTMPC works fine in FireFox, even while Safari is locked up). This is separate from the Safari issue noted above.
I'm using 10.6.2 w/ Safari 4.0.4 & iTunes 9.0.2 (Flash not installed)
James

You could try [these grey sceen, etc., troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570] ignoring any duplicaion of what you already have don. And, you could try [these general troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1394] again ignoring duplication.
If all above fails, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • Odd bluetooth behavior after ios 8 update

After the ios 8 update a call is no longer automatically transferred to my headset when I switch it on during an incoming call.
Before the update I could switch on my Jabra headset while my iphone 5C was ringing and that would automatically answer the call and direct the sound to the headset. That is how a bluetooth headset should work.
After the update the call is answered when I turn on the headset but the sound is not transferred to the headset. If I press the answer button on the headset the call is terminated. Makes absolutely no sense at all. Any ideas for a fix apart from waiting for 8.0.3??

I have he same problem when I have bluetooth activated and my IPhone is paired.  When the phone rings and I press 'Accept' I receive the message 'Call has Ended', however if I quickly press the Speaker Key and select my  Jabra blue tooth device, I  can capture the call.   Why isn't the Bluetooth device connecting to the call automatically when the blue tooth is paired and active?   Receiving the Message' Call has Ended' and having to quickly tap on the speaker button and press the Bluetooth device before the call goes the voicemail doesn't see right.  Thank you

  • Odd Vibrate Behaviour after 3.1.2 Update

I saw one other post concerning this issue, and was curious how many others have experienced this 'problem' (or if anyone has stumbled on a 'fix'):
Since I updated to 3.1.2, with my iPhone vibrate setting ON, after the 'sound switch' is placed to silent, the iPhone will vibrate once (as it should). Approximately 5 minutes after the iPhone has fallen asleep, there will be another vibrate cycle, with no associated reason.
Also with the above settings, when I've pressed the 'top button' on my iPhone to put it to sleep, 3 - 4 times the iPhone has entered a loop where the vibrate will turn on and off at a rate of 1/second. Waking the iPhone stops the vibrate behavior.
I've been unsuccessful in getting the above behavior to occur every time, though I've not changed any of the other settings. It almost appears to be random.
    Thanks for your thoughts...

Restored the 3.1.2 firmware again and Internet is reachable again.

  • Razr M having sound issues after 4.4.2 update.

So I turned my phone screen on and I saw that I had a update to do the 4.4.2 update and I left it while it updated. I came back and saw that everything was new but the sound keeps making this clicking noise. So when I get a text I hear an odd click followed by my text message tone. It's not just for notifications either, it does it before ringtones and even on the screen lock sound. I was wondering if anyone else had this, I haven't had the phone itself too long either.

PLEASE STOP posting useless "safe mode/master reset" crap in here. It's obvious that these problems are happening to people RIGHT after the software update, and many have already said that they have already reset, etc, and done all this, and it doesnt help. Also, if you actually read, the Motorola forum post I linked to, people have reported similar and nothing fixes it. The update itself caused it. NOT any other apps running. If you have nothing productive or actual troubleshooting to add, please remain silent. Anything else, and you just post in here looking like robotic ******. That's my 2 cents.

  • Unable to boot from ODD or USB after windows 8.1 update on P850-31L

    Hi
I just updated a P850-31L to windows 8.1 from windows 8 through the windows store.
Before the update I was able to boot from a USB drive by pressing F12 during start up.
After the update I was no longer able to boot from the USB drive. Selecting the USB drive by changing the boot order in BIOS setup via F2 or by pressing F12 no longer works.
Booting from ODD is also no longer possible.
The BIOS version is 6.70 and does not allow secure boot to be disabled. However the DVD and the USB stick I tried are signed Ubuntu 12.10 which worked prior to the upgrade. Fastboot in windows 8.1 is disabled.
This would then appear to be a bug in the Toshiba BIOS? Or has the windows 8.1 updated the BIOS or the EFI boot partition in such a way as to override the BIOS setting? Really stuck here, doesn't seem to be much information about.
Any thoughts or assistance would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Michael
Update: I just tried booting from the Toshiba windows 8 recovery DVD and this no longer works either.
    Message was edited by: michael_toshiba_forum

    OK I fixed this.
Firstly it's worth noting that it is possible to to disable secure boot in the 6.70 BIOS.
However this option is only available when the user password is not set in the security menu.
After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.
That's good I suppose as I guess it may prevent secure boot from being disabled when the machine is running. However this does not appear to have been related to this issue.
I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu.
The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.
Perhaps the windows 8.1 upgrade somehow invisibly corrupted the BIOS settings. Or maybe it was just a stranage co-incidence that the BIOS corrupted itself during the install. Either way that factory reset fixed it.

after updating to 5.5 i get one loud pop/crack sound when starting or wakeing my mac up from sleep.
I am useing it with harman/kardon sound stick speakers
Anyone had simler issues or no how to resolve this?

Hello Anton. Have you had any luck with your problem?
I have recently noticed that my Samson CO1U USB Microphone is now very quiet and muffled when connected to my MacBook and yet it still works fine on a Windows XP machine. As it used to be fine with my Mac before the 10.5.6 update I can only assume that this latest update has caused a big problem with some USB devices. Like you, I can't get any answers.
I am thinking of rolling back to 10.5.4 to see if I can use my Microphone again.

  • Sound Problems after Flash 11.3 Update

This reply is to the post by Ortho_Fan, number 28, which references a Firefox forum and "Firefox Hates New Update." This thread is specifically about problems that Flash 11.3 is causing with Firefox but the problem isn't with Firefox, it is with Flash Player 11.3.
I have no sound with Firefox, Chrome or Safari.  I do have sound with IE9 but some people do not.
See these and probably other threads:

    Problem with sound after update
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4483038

I've branched this discussion into it's own thread, because the issue you're describing is different than the issue from the previous thread, which was related to a specific crash instance.  We'd like to keep the threads focused on particular issues to help both investigate and collate the information coming in, and to aid in discovery for people that are experiencing similar issues.  A single thread with a dozen issues is far less useful in either regard.
For the sound issue you're experiencing, I would recommend that you follow the advice in the threads you've referenced above.
Flash Player 11.3 included new sound enhancments to facilitate support for low-latency audio, to facilitate more repsonsive sound in complex Flash games.  While we try to test a wide array of hardware, and conduct months of beta testing, it's impossible to hit every device, OS, browser and driver combination.
Please ensure that you have the lastet drivers installed for your sound card/chipset.  If the problem persists, please post details of your configuration to that forum thread so that we can track down that hardware/driver combo and investigate the problem.
As a workaround, you may wish to roll back to Flash Player 10.3, until a new version is available.  Flash Player 10.3 contains up-to-date security patches (we maintain one major version back for Enterprise), and will revert the sound change that is causing problems for you.

  • SOLVED - T500 - Lost sound volume after a very recent update

I keep my T500 current with new drivers, however in a recent update (I do not know which) I lost almost all the volume on my speakers and headphone.
    Has anyone experienced this?
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Persio.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ONeill, thanks for your response and interest in helping.
    I am running Win 7 Ultimate x64.
I have just finished doing a series of  tests with NO success.
All my drivers are current with the Lenovo Support Site drivers' versions.
I have unistalled the Conexant driver using the Device Driver screen and let the system reinstall (PnP).
I have unistalled the Hot Key Drivers, tested without them installed, and reinstalled them.
I have reinstalled the Conexant driver fresh from the Lenovo Support Site.
The problem I am having is the following:
In a silent room, using the SmartAudio aplet from Control Panel,  I can barely hear the sounds with the volume set at 100%. This is true for the internal speakers and for a headphone plugged into the system.
This indicates to me that the it is a volume issue.
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.
    Persio.

  • No System Sound/Audio after updating to 10.6.2

After doing a system update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 I've lost all system sound excluding—strangely—iChat, which still does notification pings. I don't even get the familiar "click-clack" sound when changing the volume from my keyboard.
The speakers are fine, as I can hear the iChat pings and the start-up tone. Just baffled as to what the problem could be. Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful.
Other information: I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a 24" iMac circa late 2007/early 2008.

I too am having this problem unless I resort to plugging in my external speakers which I don't want to use when I am not at home. I am not being given the option to switch to internal speakers oddly, please help!!!!!!!!
Another Problem: Time Machine: I am unable to restore anything now. 10.6.2 has a bug alright, this is preventing me from restoring anything on time machine back to any date on there. =/

  • Wine sound issues after update (Arch64)

I've had Spotify running under Wine for a while, but after a recent wine update it said that there was a "problem with your sound card" and running the audio test via winecfg failed.
I deleted ~/.wine and ran winecfg again and the audio test was successful... But when I ran it (or any other wine program) subsequently it failed.
I re-read the wiki and tried running "WINEARCH=win32 winecfg" instead and adding "export WINEARCH=win32" to ~/.bashrc, but that hasn't helped either.
A few days ago I set up a new PC and had the same problem, so I was expecting to see other people reporting it, but I can't find any mention of the issue, so I'm really stumped!
Can anyone suggest how I can find out the cause of the problem?

karol wrote:What do you use for sound - alsa, oss ...?
I use alsa...  I think!  Although I don't remember specifically having to set up sound when I installed Arch.  The XFCE mixer panel applet shows "HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)" in the sound card pull-down menu.
Since the Spotify instructions suggest selecting OSS in the winecfg, I did so - and didn't really expect it to work, but it was working fine like that for months.  Now the audio test (in winecfg) fails whether I select alsa, oss or jack.
karol wrote:The most recent change wrt sound involves not autoloading snd-pcm-oss anymore.
Yes; the problems I'm having occurred after a wine update roughly two or three weeks ago.  The more recent changes to /etc/rc.conf and module loading don't seem to have made any difference to the issue.
It just seems really strange that the audio test works the first time I run winecfg with no ~/.wine profile...  And it's also odd that it just stopped working suddenly without me doing anything (as far as I know!) and that no one else seems to be having the problem, yet both of my Arch PCs are affected...
I've just discovered that if I delete ~./wine and never touch the audio tab in winecfg, Spotify works on both PCs.  If I click the audio tab, wine says that "There is no audio driver currently specified in the registry.  A recommended driver has been selected for you...".  If I apply the changes the audio fails every time whichever driver I choose.
Ideally I'd like to find out what's causing the problem so I can fix it and have winecfg working as it should be, but at least I have a workaround so I can listen to Spotify again...

  • Bad behavior after installing recent updates.

This has gone beyond irritating and is actually interfering with my use of the computer.
I typically wait to install updates, to give the community a chance to discover trouble before I put my machine at risk. Apple updates are, in most cases, spotless and useful but there have been times...
I seem to have found one of these not so sweet spots.
I just installed: "QuickTime" (7.4.1) and Security Update 2008-001 (PowerPC)
At the end of this process the first disturbing problem happened, rather than being informed that I needed to restart the machine at the end of the installation the screen did that awful 'dark window shade' and then put up the warning to hold down the power button and shut down.
I had no choice but to do this. After restarting I ran Disk Utility and Repaired the Permissions. Despite this and another restart for good measure I now have a disturbing problem. In a very periodic way, its about 1 minute, the finder opens a window and brings focus to it, overlapping whatever application I am working in at the time. I have a number of of drives in this machine and each has several partitions. No matter what partition I choose in advance the finder window always opens with the partition chosen that has the OS and applications in it.
Even writing this post is difficult because the window keeps popping up as a try to write.
I opened the console log and found something odd as well...
    2007-12-24 13:48:25 -0800: Installed "Security Update 2007-009 (PowerPC)" (1.1)
    2008-01-15 23:57:27 -0800: Installed "iTunes" (7.6)
    2008-01-15 23:58:22 -0800: Installed "QuickTime" (7.4)
    2008-02-20 12:27:50 -0800: Installed "QuickTime" (7.4.1)
No mention of the Security Update 2008-001.
I am not sure how to proceed but I am not going to install this on any other machines. I am thinking of running Cocktail but I will wait till I hear from my learned Mac brethren.
    Thanks in advance.

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating to Safari 3.0.4 (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.

  • No sound after IOS 4.1 update

I really hope someone can suggest a solution. I updated my iPhone 3G to IOS 4.1 earlier today and since the I have lost all sound - no keyboard clicks, music or alerts. Has anyone else experienced this and could you offer a suggestion?
    Many thanks

No sound for my iPhone 3G after iOS 4.1 update! Restored back to 3.1.2. Still no sound! (befor the 4.1 update, everything was fine).
Then I reset all settings, sound came back. But then iPhone started to freeze randomly, with increasing frequency to the point I needed to restore again. This time back to iOS 4.1. And guess what - no sound! Resetted all settings. Still no sound.
    Key points:
    * sound loss is software issue that came with iOS 4. (i was able to get sound back after settings reset but only on iOS 3.1)
    * iOS 4.1 makes iPhone unstable both on 4.1 and earlier versions.
    * restore has no effect (I never restored from backup, started as a fresh phone)
    * iOS 4.1 destroys your iPhone 3G
