Odd sound from Superdrive

Recently, the superdrive on my G5 Quad core started making an odd sound - with no disk present, and for no reason at all, it would make a whirring/clicking sound, like it was looking to read a disk. It does this randomly, sometimes every few minutes, sometimes not for hours. It will cycle once or twice, then stop. Regular read/write performance seems unaffected. Any thoughts/solutions? Thanks - Dave

Mine does the same thing. It happens about every 5 to 6 minutes, it will make a little click or spinup check like it's checking to see if there's a disk in the drive.
I have no problem burning disks/dvd's etc, but this just started happening after I upgraded to 10.4.8.
It's sorta irritating to hear and I worry that it's causing unnessesary wear and tear on my drive.
Unless there's some way to figure out what is happening, I'm going to reformat my machine to see if it goes away.
The only other new CD rom app I've installed is DVD2ONEX.
Do you have this app installed?

  • Odd sound from 24-inch LED in sleep mode

Hello. I got the new 24-inch LED Cinema Display about a week ago. Looks awesome. Noticed an odd sound though that comes from the display when my MacBook Pro goes in sleep mode and only then. It's not extremely loud but is high pitched and is emanating from the back, around the power cord connector. Anybody else noticed? Wondering if it's something I should be worried about and consider exchanging before it worsens. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that ticking sound. It does not bug me and is not the one I'm writing about. The noise I'm referring to is high pitched sound that comes from the back of the display, around the power cord, when the MacBook Pro attached to it has been in sleep mode for a while. Just wondering if it's a defect and I should bring to the Apple Store. Display is otherwise spectacular and functioning flawlessly.

  • Odd sound from mac.  Input would be appriciated!

    Alright,
I've had my macbook for a little over a year now, so i'm relatively sure that this issue is new.
My macbook is making a quiet sound that seems to come from beneath 2-3 keys. I know that this is approximately the position of the CPU, which I would imagine does make some electronic noise. The thing is I can't just be noticing this now, could I?
Anyways, does anyone else have a macbook that makes a faint 'computery'(sorry, thats the best adjective I can think up) sound from the top left corner?

Would you consider it to be a high pitched noise?
Is your Macbook the Aluminum one, or the Polycarbonate one? My aluminum one has a fan I can hear if I put my ear up to it, but I don't hear a high pitched noise...
My Dell E1405 made a high pitched noise, apparently its an issue with the Core 2 Duo chipset it used at the time.

Does that sound about right? If so, I don't think there is a fix for it.

  • Odd sounds from my G5

    Hello.
My G5 is making a low, quiet, rolling "VROoomm.....VROooomm......." sound. I have my G5 for over 3 years and either never noticed this sound before or am now noticing it. This happens whether applications are open or the computer is just idle. The only thing different I've done in the last few days is an install ( on phone with someone with apple because my new Quicktime Pro download was causing a ? symbol when I was using flash player, which unfortunately didn't work. I resolved this by turning off the MIME settings on quicktime ).
I just finished using Disk Warrior and the sound persists.
Is this normal or should I take some form of action?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Hi Guys.
Sorry for the late response and much thanks for your responses to my question.
I opened up the G5 ( which has been placed on my floor since purchase ) and cleaned out the large amounts of dust. Took a while!
The same sound is there though. I think the machine is running a bit more smoothly because of it's lack of dust now. I'm thinking it's the hard drive now. Took a look inside just now and the fans are running low speed and constant.
The sound is about the same rate of speed as a heartbeat and just as constant. No wavering. No clicking or other strange sounds. Very low sound but I think more noticeable because of the consistency of it. Much like the sound of a small battery operated toy that one turns on and off every second or so. But muc lower.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, I'm not sure if I've ever noticed the sound before because I usually have earphones in, music playing a fan on etc.
Would a normal working hard drive sound like this?
If it is the hard drive, does this sound mean an impending hard drive failure?
The machine is working great otherwise. Maybe I'm over reacting?
Everything is backed up just in case.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this question and for the help previous!

  • Odd clicking sound from the speakers

There's a clicking sound from the speakers all the time, even when I'm not playing music. My PowerBook is only 1 week old, and I haven't dropped it or anything. Does anyone know what this is? Whenever I plug in my earphones or speakers, the sound stops.

I wish I knew. Having the same problem. Comes and goes. Presently it's happening and it BUGS. In the past I've tried disabling some of my extra scripts and software (especially extra preference panes), but you're probably not in the same boat there, having such a new machine.
Here's hoping someone has a solution!

  • No sound from Apogee Jam with iPad mini and Lightning-30 pin adapter

    Hello everybody.
I'm trying to use my Apogee Jam with iPad mini but I am unable to hear any sound from it. Jam seems to work, since the led become green and react to the guitar signal. I tried two different guitars and different cables but nothing changes. Jam also works perfectly on MacBook Pro and garage Band, so I first assumed the issue was in the iPad or in the Lightning-30 pin adapter (genuine).
Oddly on AmpliTube I can tune the guitar, so some signal arrives to the iPad, but I can't do the same on JamUp, where the tuner seems not to reiceve any signal. Are there some settings I should check on the apps?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Make sure you have the monitor input turned on in GarageBand. http://youtu.be/Eb8bN3tExio

  • Odd Sound Behavior After 10.6.2 Update

I've had a few odd sound issues since updating to 10.6.2:
    1) Volume is set at 50% after some reboots (I normally have it set at 12.5%). This has happened about 1/2 the time after reboots (which have unfortunately been much more often in 10.6).
    2) While iTunes is playing the sound stops and the sound icon in the menu bar greys out. iTunes keeps 'playing' but I don't get any sound. This lasts for 5 - 10 seconds and happens a few times an hour but without any predictability.
It may happen at times that iTunes isn't playing and I just don't notice it. It has happened while the system as announcing the time as well. This may be the cause of sound issue #3 but I haven't caught the sound icon in a 'grey state' when the notification sounds don't play yet.
When the sound icon is grey I get the beach ball and Safari doesn't respond (standard 'Application not responding' message). Other apps seem to work while this is happening (Finder, System Prefs - including sound panel, FireFox, etc).
    3) Some expected sounds used for feedback in Finder & Mail don't always work. This is very intermittent and may be happening more often then I notice these are notification sounds and I don't realize that I've missed them. I don't know if it's associated to the sound failure mentioned in #2.
    ~
I've also had some other odd behavior:
    * System won't wakeup from sleep (not always but often enough to require several reboots in the last week).
    * Safari just eats up RAM.
    * Safari has locked up for no apparent reason (no clue as to what sets it off).
    * Safari has locked up while using a Java applet. This only happens on occasion but always happens when launching a GoToMyPC session (GTMPC works fine in FireFox, even while Safari is locked up). This is separate from the Safari issue noted above.
    I'm using 10.6.2 w/ Safari 4.0.4 & iTunes 9.0.2 (Flash not installed)

You could try [these grey sceen, etc., troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570] ignoring any duplicaion of what you already have don. And, you could try [these general troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1394] again ignoring duplication.
If all above fails, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • Intermittent loss of sound from my midi keyboard

I am using an M-Audio Keystation 49e in GarageBand 10.0.2 on a MacBook Pro and it continually loses sound--i.e. I am playing the keyboard and hearing the sound just fine and suddenly I can no longer hear sounds from the keyboard (I continue to hear other tracks in GarageBand).  The odd thing is that GarageBand still shows that it detects the midi device.  Sometimes clicking "Reset MIDI Drivers" fixes the problem temporarily and sometimes unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in fixes the problem temporarily but it is happening so frequently as to render playing a whole song impossible.  Anyone encountered this before?  I am thinking maybe it's a problem with the keyboard itself but I am not sure.
    Thanks for the help!

I have exactly the same problem. Did you find any solution for that or not?

  • Is there a way i can record sound from my computer?

i am trying to record sound from a dvd. can this be done using garage band or itunes?

I heartily agree with the use of the "WireTap" software--it records CD quality AIFF files (saves them as QuickTime) of any sound playing through your computer and is verrrrry easy to use. It used to be free (which is how I got it via versiontracker awhile back) but it is now available in a "pay" version. Free versions are readily available on old MacAddict software discs from a year or so ago. If you need that version, feel free to email me and I'll send you a spare.

  • Partial freeze, then an odd sound

At random as I'm using my iMac G5, everything freezes, I can still move my mouse and I get the multi-colored pinwheel telling me its "thinking". If I was playing music it stops, if I was using Photoshop I can no longer touch what I was doing. And this odd sound emanates from the upper left corner of my iMac. It sounds like a ticking clock. Its not coming from the speakers its from the computer case itself. Then after a few moments, or sometimes minutes, it stops and everything resumes. If I had tried to close a window while it was 'frozen', when the ticking stops and everything resumes the window closes. Its almost like the processor ceases and then comes back or something. Anyone else run into this problem? Please help! I intend to call Apple tomorrow, as it has become very annoying.
    Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - indeed, call Apple, a ticking sound can mean that your drive is dying. If at all possible, back up your data now, try and make a clone of your system using SuperDuper!.

  • Odd sound quality with streaming music

I had more than 1 Quick Time clip streaming earlier today and they sounded very odd. I didn't notice until listening to a stream online and then checking songs on iTunes and found similar problems with both. There seems to be uneven volume between elements of a stream and all vocals tend to sound as if they're drenched in reverb or emanating from a cave. I re-started the iMac, but the problem still exists. Anyone else have this problem?
    thanks!

The sound coming from my speakers now just sounds garbled and low in volume, whereas a piano sound from my Reason software sounds fine. Is there any fix to this issue? Thanks.

  • Odd sound/signal

    Hi everyone,
This could be kind of odd, but I'm hearing a sort of signal/sound when I listen to music while on earphones. It is like an indication for something and similar to sound when e-mail arrives. It doesn't disturb me, but could be cool to know the reason for this signal.
Thanks for any of your help.
P.S. I have just purchased MBAir so I'm not familair with full functionality and stuff like that:)

  • Odd sound?

My computer's working perfect....fan's running smoothly...but I have this odd sound coming from the bottom area of the computer about every 5 min. and lasts maybe 3 sec. Maybe a faint groan???

Fans are always on and they do speed up, but the fans in your computer are on the side and top, not the bottom. Is it possible that the noise is higher up than you think?
Ask the cat, they always know, mine do!

  • Sound from new MSI R9 280X - coil whine? RMA?

    Hey all.
Just trying to determine if the sounds coming from my new PC's video card are normal or not. Here is my build: au.pcpartpicker.com/p/1XKQb
I hear this sound when running what I would consider low end graphics tests as well as when I booted up BF4 for the first time last night.  Graphics automatically set to high.
I've recorded a few sounds of the 'squeals' that I hope are good enough for people to make a judgement. The sound seems to be coming from the part of the video card where the power connects. I have reseated the card and tried using a different power cable. It is not an issue with the fans.
First is a capture from a test in Unigine Valley:
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening
Second is a sound from loading Team Fortress 2 and then moving the mouse a little bit.
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/sounds-from-friday-evening-1
Interestingly, when I enable Vsync in Team Fortress 2 the sound disappears. If I enable Vysnc in the Unigine Valley test, it does not make a difference.
I also ran a test in the 3D Mark(did not have the option to change anything as it is only a demo) and the Ice Storm made the worst sounds from the card:
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm
    soundcloud.com/angryeye/ice-storm-2
Considering buying 3DMark so I can muck around with the settings a bit and see which cases I hear the sound and which i don’t
I also loaded up BF4 last night and got the noise with VSYNC enabled or disabled(can record if needed). Also the same issue in Deus Ex, makes sounds with Vysnc on and off.
Can anyone with a MSI R9 280x confirm if this is normal? Is this coil whine? Reviews on newegg seem to indicate a lot of people are getting similar sounds and I’m not really thrilled with this considering it’s a brand new card and the first time I've built and i can hear this through the case and fans.
Could it be something that can be fixed by modifying voltage settings (as it seems to come from the power connection)? Or does this require an RMA?
    Any advice appreciated.

    so your parts are:
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF XM (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Antec HCG M 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - OEM (64-bit)
ok there are 2 causes of coil whine and odd noises so be totally sure its coming from the Graphics card itself by getting your mike directly over it and move it around and test other parts for noise as sometimes its The PSU (Power Supply Unit) that is doing it or it can cause it as yours is a split +12v unit (+12V1@40A, +12V2@40A) it may be the cause as Antec at times do not make reliable units (those rating is has for 2 rails look to me as being fake as they exceed its power limits combined (12v x 80A = 960W so it can probably do 40A on one but then the other will be terrible at 22.5A as it looks like there doing virtual +12v rails with 40A OCP fuses)) so its suspect as it may not be behaving well!

  • Why no sound from rear speakers (Xfi X

Vista 32bit, CMSS enabled, why no sound from rear speakers with music? XP no problem at all, only in Vista. Using latest drivers (v2.5.0004).
I realize I'm hoping against hope to get a useful answer at the Creative forums, but I do believe in miracles and the odd one happening once or twice in a lifetime, lol.

Well, I think I have an answer, from Catherina-CL's Audio in Windows Vista post. 2.The Vista audio architecture changes the way per-stream audio processing works, which required us to write new software to support this
    Issues that may be encountered:
CMSS no longer works on audio streams from the OS.
    Status:
Features based on Windows XP architecture must be rewritten to conform to the new Vista architecture, and we have a team of software engineers, project managers and testers dedicated to this task in order to provide our customers the same seamless audio experience under Windows Vista that they enjoyed under Windows XP. However, I found a somewhat crappy solution, at least with my old Altec Lansing 4 speaker/ subwoofer system. Unplug the surround cable from your subwoofer (unplugging it from the card itself has no effect). That at least will make all the speakers work, even if it's not true surround. Good for listening to music loud.
