Odd sound?

My computer's working perfect....fan's running smoothly...but I have this odd sound coming from the bottom area of the computer about every 5 min. and lasts maybe 3 sec. Maybe a faint groan???

Fans are always on and they do speed up, but the fans in your computer are on the side and top, not the bottom. Is it possible that the noise is higher up than you think?
Ask the cat, they always know, mine do!

  • Odd sound from 24-inch LED in sleep mode

Hello. I got the new 24-inch LED Cinema Display about a week ago. Looks awesome. Noticed an odd sound though that comes from the display when my MacBook Pro goes in sleep mode and only then. It's not extremely loud but is high pitched and is emanating from the back, around the power cord connector. Anybody else noticed? Wondering if it's something I should be worried about and consider exchanging before it worsens. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard that ticking sound. It does not bug me and is not the one I'm writing about. The noise I'm referring to is high pitched sound that comes from the back of the display, around the power cord, when the MacBook Pro attached to it has been in sleep mode for a while. Just wondering if it's a defect and I should bring to the Apple Store. Display is otherwise spectacular and functioning flawlessly.

  • Odd Sound Behavior After 10.6.2 Update

I've had a few odd sound issues since updating to 10.6.2:
    1) Volume is set at 50% after some reboots (I normally have it set at 12.5%). This has happened about 1/2 the time after reboots (which have unfortunately been much more often in 10.6).
    2) While iTunes is playing the sound stops and the sound icon in the menu bar greys out. iTunes keeps 'playing' but I don't get any sound. This lasts for 5 - 10 seconds and happens a few times an hour but without any predictability.
It may happen at times that iTunes isn't playing and I just don't notice it. It has happened while the system as announcing the time as well. This may be the cause of sound issue #3 but I haven't caught the sound icon in a 'grey state' when the notification sounds don't play yet.
When the sound icon is grey I get the beach ball and Safari doesn't respond (standard 'Application not responding' message). Other apps seem to work while this is happening (Finder, System Prefs - including sound panel, FireFox, etc).
    3) Some expected sounds used for feedback in Finder & Mail don't always work. This is very intermittent and may be happening more often then I notice these are notification sounds and I don't realize that I've missed them. I don't know if it's associated to the sound failure mentioned in #2.
    ~
I've also had some other odd behavior:
    * System won't wakeup from sleep (not always but often enough to require several reboots in the last week).
    * Safari just eats up RAM.
    * Safari has locked up for no apparent reason (no clue as to what sets it off).
    * Safari has locked up while using a Java applet. This only happens on occasion but always happens when launching a GoToMyPC session (GTMPC works fine in FireFox, even while Safari is locked up). This is separate from the Safari issue noted above.
    I'm using 10.6.2 w/ Safari 4.0.4 & iTunes 9.0.2 (Flash not installed)

You could try [these grey sceen, etc., troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570] ignoring any duplicaion of what you already have don. And, you could try [these general troubleshooting steps|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1394] again ignoring duplication.
If all above fails, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • Odd sound from Superdrive

Recently, the superdrive on my G5 Quad core started making an odd sound - with no disk present, and for no reason at all, it would make a whirring/clicking sound, like it was looking to read a disk. It does this randomly, sometimes every few minutes, sometimes not for hours. It will cycle once or twice, then stop. Regular read/write performance seems unaffected. Any thoughts/solutions? Thanks - Dave

Mine does the same thing. It happens about every 5 to 6 minutes, it will make a little click or spinup check like it's checking to see if there's a disk in the drive.
I have no problem burning disks/dvd's etc, but this just started happening after I upgraded to 10.4.8.
It's sorta irritating to hear and I worry that it's causing unnessesary wear and tear on my drive.
Unless there's some way to figure out what is happening, I'm going to reformat my machine to see if it goes away.
The only other new CD rom app I've installed is DVD2ONEX.
Do you have this app installed?

  • Odd sound when pressing forward button

This is hard to explain, and at first I thought it was my fm transmitter but it does it with headphones too. Every 3rd time or so I press the up button a odd sound is heard through the speakers, almost like a drive spinning up.
Its short, low tones and loud enough to be heard but not speaker destroying loud.
    Any one else heard this?
    thanks

No one replied, so just going to close it.

  • Partial freeze, then an odd sound

At random as I'm using my iMac G5, everything freezes, I can still move my mouse and I get the multi-colored pinwheel telling me its "thinking". If I was playing music it stops, if I was using Photoshop I can no longer touch what I was doing. And this odd sound emanates from the upper left corner of my iMac. It sounds like a ticking clock. Its not coming from the speakers its from the computer case itself. Then after a few moments, or sometimes minutes, it stops and everything resumes. If I had tried to close a window while it was 'frozen', when the ticking stops and everything resumes the window closes. Its almost like the processor ceases and then comes back or something. Anyone else run into this problem? Please help! I intend to call Apple tomorrow, as it has become very annoying.
    Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - indeed, call Apple, a ticking sound can mean that your drive is dying. If at all possible, back up your data now, try and make a clone of your system using SuperDuper!.
    Let us know what happens,

  • Muvo TX FM - Very odd sound quality prob

My Muvo is 2,5 years old. After last weekend it started to function oddly. Allmost everything works very well. The only problem is that when playing songs that includes singing, I can't hear the singing. Everything else sounds good. I can hear guitars, keyboards, drums, flutes ect. but singing always suppresses out in every song. It's like listening karaoke songs. I have tried formatting the device. I have updated firmwares. I have changed the battery. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

Earphones are OK, so are the equalizer settings.
Strange thing is that the songs on the mp3-player sound fine when played over the computer.
Do you think formatting is an option?

  • Macbook issues: waking from sleep & odd sounds

Hello, I've had my macbook for about three weeks now and have experienced this waking from sleep problem several times. Simply what happens is I open the lid and the screen turns on, but all that comes up is the rainbow coloured circle, has anyone else had this problem?
Also rarely when a sound is played like emptying the trash the speakers make an odd crackling noise, and after that if you mute the speakers you get no sound but still noise.
Finally where can I put in the suggestion for frontrow, I'd like to be able to play music in frontrow from my ipod when connected, you can get to shared libraries but not a conncted ipod :/
    Any help is appreciated!

happened again this morning, this time (though this has happened before) all usb ports become unuseable. the trackpad was still useable and i tried to reboot but the system froze.
this seems to happen mostly when its running on battery

  • Odd sound and video issue comes and goes.

Please dont give me the "open up a new user account" solution, as to that is a cop out to a real solution.... THANK YOU... I see it too much here, and honestly it just isn't a answer. I actually found weird solutions to this issue, but I want to discuss this all here and see if anyone else experiences this or has any input to this WEIRD thing.
So, I have SEVERAL Macs, laptops, power macs, etc...been a 10 year Mac user, with hardly any problems because I am Mac savvy (usually) - I own a professional Audio recording studio, so know ALOT about sound, etc... and I only experience this on this laptop, my PowerBook 17inch Alluminum (the higher resolution one that has pad scrolling)...
Anyway, issue is this: Sound works fine 98% of the time. VERY seldomly for absolutely no reason and no change to any settings the sound will stop working on ANY movie player (Quicktime, Real Player, MPlayer, etc..) PLUS nit work on the net either. BUT all interface computer sounds will work fine (volume button changing sound, trash, etc...) and iTunes works fine, music related players will work, actually quicktime will actually play music, just not the sound WITH a movie/clip, whatever... - ALONG with the fact that IF it is a Quicktime, or Real Player movie/clip I am watching and NOT getting sound to, it ALSO only plays the movie for like 10 seconds then the screen stops, but the timeline marker still moves. I can then pause and start the movie/clip and it will then pick back up, again though for only 10 seconds....
    WEIRD !!!
Solutions I have come up with but find weird, yet don't ALWAYS work...
#1 - Launch all my players one by one, and then quit them. Then restart, then everything works fine. But seldomly works.
#2 - Drain my battery all the way dead, shut off my computer, charge it until full, then UNPLUG from charger and turn computer on.... everything works fine then... Solves issue more often. (I notice this issue seems to happen alot when some odd charging antics of mine happen, like half charging, or leaving plugged in for days at a time on accident, or using leaving plugged in for to many days at a time)...
#3 - Go to "Utilities", "Audio/Midi", and make sure sample rates are at 44.1, and if are just rechange to 44.1 anyway, then close. Works the most....
As you can see this is not a user issue. OF COARSE if I start up a new user account it would work fine, but a week later or whatever it would happen on ANY USER. So this is some odd bug, or issue with something.
Anyone else got anything to say about this ? Or maybe have a permanent solution to it ?
    Thanks,

Got an answer and a break-through here on this subject/issue, so I thought I would just keep this topic updated. Even though no one seems to be replying.
As I also stated this in the "No Sound On Net" topic by Cassafrass that is highly related to this topic I have found that my 3rd solution stated in my original post is absolutely the most gauranteed solution 100% of the time. And now as I have waited for this to happen 2 times since then and fixed it both times I have found this to be true. As I went to the "Audio" tab in the Audio/Midi Utility I did in fact BOTH times now see that somehow the audio input and output were set to 96k !! I did not do this, and I am doing nothing to make it happen... WEIRD... But yet like I said, I just switched them both back to 44.1k and everything instantly began working fine and as usual.
So as this is obviously NOT a permanent fix. It does show though that it IS where the problem is, and it is a solution. Now to only find out what is making it switch itself to 96k sometimes.
Also it does make sense too, because the net and certain players just can not play output at 96k, and even if they can won't do so if the source of audio is not at 96k. And since most to all audio out there is at 44.1k (CD quality) this all makes perfect sense.
Oddly though, as I have been running tests, I was thinking I was doing something that makes this happen (since very few people seem to have this problem) -- but these last two times it happened, I literally have done NOTHING but very basic computer using. I wasn't doing my extensive professional stuff as I usually do. So its really odd.
It is possible from my previous activities that I have corrupted the preference file that is linked to the Audio/Midi utility setting.... and that is my next stage of trouble shooting in which I will report back with my findings... (as stated in the other topic as well).
PLEASE if anyone else has any input or anything to say on this matter, please feel free to do so.

  • [Xtra] Odd sound distortion every once in a wh

My father and I both have a 30 Gb Zen xtra and we both head an odd "woom" sound every so often when listening to them. Both players have this problem. I've updated the firmware on my Dad's, but mine is still outdated. The sound is not in the music file because if you back up and listen again, the distortion is not there. Any idea on what is causing this?Message Edited by ScooterSES on 2-8-2004 0:46 PM

Whenever you get problems like this do a reset and a disk cleanup. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu.
You mentioned the firmware was updated on one player, is it still happening? Can you give any more details on the audio file type you are using?

  • New keyboard spacebar has odd sound

I just got my new iMac yesterday and have found that all keys sound the same apart from the spacebar which sounds like plastic is underneath each time I hit it, very annoying, could it need replacing or cleaning under the key.
I have searched the forum where people say the spacebar is loud but nothing about odd noise. Also says you cant take off the key otherwise you void warranty which is a bit worrying...
    Thanks for the help
    Scott

I have only had my new iMac for a few weeks now which came with the tiny mini-keyboard (the one without the keypad section) and I haven't noticed the space bar being any louder or different than the other keys. So perhaps yours is not quite put together correctly?
Mine is very quite on all keys.

  • Odd sound quality with streaming music

I had more than 1 Quick Time clip streaming earlier today and they sounded very odd. I didn't notice until listening to a stream online and then checking songs on iTunes and found similar problems with both. There seems to be uneven volume between elements of a stream and all vocals tend to sound as if they're drenched in reverb or emanating from a cave. I re-started the iMac, but the problem still exists. Anyone else have this problem?
    thanks!

The sound coming from my speakers now just sounds garbled and low in volume, whereas a piano sound from my Reason software sounds fine. Is there any fix to this issue? Thanks.

  • Odd sound/signal

    Hi everyone,
This could be kind of odd, but I'm hearing a sort of signal/sound when I listen to music while on earphones. It is like an indication for something and similar to sound when e-mail arrives. It doesn't disturb me, but could be cool to know the reason for this signal.
Thanks for any of your help.
P.S. I have just purchased MBAir so I'm not familair with full functionality and stuff like that:)
    Best regards,
    Dmitrij

  • Extreemly odd Sound problem

    Hi All.
As usual, I am mighty stuck after trying all avenues to sort out this extreemly odd and seemingly specific problem I am having.
    I am using:
    After Effects CS4
    Windows XP
    University Workstation computers
There are two labs at the university I work for, both kitted out with the Adobe CS4 suite plus other software for the variuous media courses.  In one class I tried to show someone how Sound could be imported into After Effects and it would not work (I will explain the exact problem in a bit) I tried it on my machine and it did work.  Today I ran a full class and every single student couldn't get the sound to work but it worked fine on the machine I was logged into.
After a lot of testing and trying, it boiled down to the fact that if you are logged into the computer as a staff member, After Effects works fine with sound, as in, how you would expect it to work with sound.  However, if a student is logged in, this is what happens...
The sound file will import to the project bin in After Effects with no error message.  However, it has no wave form on the thumbnail and Zero information beside the thumbnail.  You can drag it into the timeline and it appears as a grey layer.  Ram preview, rendering with audio, ctrl dragging the playhead all result in no audio output and there is no audio mute option in the timeline.  It is as if the audio file is a proxy file or a ghost file of some sort.  I have been using After Effects for over 8 years and have never witnessed this before.
The same audio file will play fine in QuickTime, WMP or anything else, but After Effects seems to just see it as a shell of a file and doesn't know what to do with it.  Whilst we are organising a work around for the students, I thought I would put the problem to you talented people as I am out of options as to what the problem could be.
    - It obviously seems it could be something to do with the log in type at the university, but I don't know what type of operating system User restrictions could specifically stop an audio file from being used in After Effects.
    - I have checked the disk Cache, and cecked the audio settings inside After Effects and on XP.  I have also reset the preferences file for After Effects
    - This is not a preview or rendering problem.  I know how to use, render and preview audio in After Effects, it is another problem which I am not aware of, obviously.
    - I have tried mp3, wav, aiff sound files and they all play fine on the same computer under student log in using a variety of software, even Premiere pro.  The same problem occurs if I import a movie clip with sound, the sound is non existent, even though it is there.  But keep in mind, if I log onto the same computer a student was using, all is fine again.
I hope someone knows what this is.  I have searched sideways on the net for a solution and I have found some people who have posted the same problem (but minus any log in accounts being a part of the problem) but they get swamped by people telling them to do a ram preview or plug their headphones in and then the actual problem never gets answered due to a everyone giving information who don't actually read the original problem.
Apologies for a long explanation but I wanted to give as much information as possible so that someone might pick up on it and know a solution.
Thanks in advance as allways and thank you for reading.
    Mel

    - It obviously seems it could be something to do with the log in type at the university, but I don't know what type of operating system User restrictions could specifically stop an audio file from being used in After Effects.
Group policies! Your users simply don't have the permission to modify, load and unload system drivers. Either up them all to the Power Users group or run gpedit.msc and find the respective option and add whatever current group you use to the list.
