Odd stuff on my desk top
Earlier today I installed windows media player and new VirusBarrier definisions on my MacBook Pro. Now I have a Network, Servers and Static Icons on my desktop and I can't get rid of them. They all show 0KB. Any idea what might be going on? Thx

I don't really know where to start. This has to be the worst possible way of sorting this out but I see no other way of doing it. Why can't I just speak to someone on the end of a telephone? Would be much quicker, but I can't.
You guys to do an amazing job of sorting out all these problems. Anyway, Sorry to start with a moan but this about to make a grown man cry.
First of all. I don't really understand this .htaccess file thing.
1. Is it called .htaccess ? - is that what I upload it as? Not html or anything else after it - ie .htaccess.html or .htaccess.txt
If not what is it? .htaccess doesn't seem to be anything and just sits on the webspace not doing anything -or having a icon (it's just a white page with no ext)
2. What is inside this .htaccess file? Is it one of the "AddDefaultCharset UTF-8" for example? I have now tried them all (the ones that were on that link) and none of them seem to work. Is that all I put inside the file? Does it matter what font etc?
3. Where exactly do I put it? When I connect to my server through FTP (fetch - and I changed the settings as per the link) I get through to the folder that has THREE other folders inside:
cgi-bin
logs
www - Which is where my website is (inside www = index.html and then the folder containing the website)
There is also a public_html file - don't know what that is.
Where does the .htaccess file go? Which folder does it sit in?
It doesn't seem to be that the server will change the encoding. Well, actually the woman at Easyspace.com (my server) didn't seem to understand what I was talking about. Probably because I don't have the right terminology. But she said that the server doesn't force anything?
I'm really not very technical (as you will have spotted) but I'm great with common sense and can normaly learn by myself but this has REALLY thrown me - I am totally stuck.

While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.

I had a locked file in the trash and thought i'd drag it out to the desk top and delete the other stuff in there. Well it duplicated itself and I cant get rid of it (BBEdit html file)
command i and unlock the little lock doesn't help.
Used option empty to finally empty the trash. Help says I should try this little operation:
1. Start in single-user mode; for instructions see Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode.
2. Type this, followed by Return: mount -uw /
3. Type this, followed by Return:
cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
4. Type this, on a single line, followed by Return:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool true
5. Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc
6. Wait for the on screen text to stop scrolling and then press Return
7. Type this, followed by Return:
find / -flags schg -exec chflags noschg {} \;
8. Once this is finished, type this followed by Return:
rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount.plist
9. Type this followed by Return: reboot
I find this to be a tad on the cute side. Beside needing to type that much with no errors, how do people remember it?
Is there a place to store things so you can find them in single user mode?

Garrettdrag the file to the desktop. Open the Terminal app. Type the following:
sudo rm
Make sure there's a space after the rm Then drag the file in question to the Terminal window. Hit Enter. Insert your admin password at the prompt and the file is gone. -
How do i stop empty folders appearing on my imac desk top
my imac 10.4 has upgraded my firefox; since that time my desk top is constantly invaded by empty files...i get rid of these by shutting down.
Just to add, those Mini ones & odd shaped small ones can ruin a Slot Loading Optical drive forever.

I have no idea what all this stuff means, but I've done a 'disk verify' for both my drives, and the results indicated they were both 'OK'.Dave P. -
Help! Flashing desk top icons and screen de-selection
While in any screen, my desk top icons will flash off for a second or 2 and then back on. At the same time, the screen I am in will be de-selected. Anyone have a cure or experience this?

It's likely some 3rd Party APP that got broken by the recent QT or Security update.
Stuffit AVR has been a big one, if you have that use the Pref Pane to turn it off, but others have been implicated too. Check System Preferences for a Stuffit Pref Pane and disable AVR.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
/private/var/run/StartupItems
/Library/StartupItems

I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so. The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however. Have no idea why. I thought this happened automatically.

I cannot open Pages from the app or from a saved document on the desk top. I get an error: "The application Pages cannot be opened -1712" Any suggestions?

IMac G3 Panther, Why do I have three hard drives on my desk top and how do I combine them into one?
Trying to get an old iMac up to be enough for my four year old to go on the internet. Upgraded to panther and put an airport card in. Now problems;
1. It can connect to my airport express, but not if I have the password enabled, then it won't, even if I put the password in.
2. There are 3 hard drives showing on the desk top, with the space divided between them.
3. I've been trying to download an old version of flash, but it never finishes and says it can't write the file or something like that. I kind of think it has to do with the file being to large and since the hard drive is divided, it won't fit.
Let me know if anybody can help and thank you for your time....Your old iMac can only connect to a WEP network, and yours is probably WPA. As far as the partitions are concerned, if you don't need any any of the data on it, use your Panther disc and erase and fomat it as one partition.

Can I format and use a Hard Drive for my mac if removed from a Desk Top PC

I wondered if you can help with some advise. I have a mackbook and love it, will never go back to pc. But, I have a desk top pc with a fairly sizable Hard Drive in it. Even though I also have a WD external Hard Drive for my macbook back up, would I be able to use my old desk top hard drive if I found a case for it to make it an 2nd external hard drive?
Would I be able to format it for use with my mac? Or is it the bin for all the hardware?

MattIt'd work just fine. Apple uses pretty much the exact same parts every other computer maker does. The one exception is now they have a temp sensor cable connection built onto drives. Before they just stuck a little plastic clip on them at a specific spot. Other than that, it's no different from any other SATA drive you might buy at the likes of Best Buy or NewEgg. So as long as you partition the drive into a format readable by Mac OS X, there shouldn't be any problems.

If you look in the audio output port, is there a red light showing. If so, the internal switch is stuck.. Insert the headphones a few times, jiggle a toothpick inside or shot some compressed air to trip the switch. If no success, have the Apple store genius bar technician do it.

I have just got a new desk top and I am trying to work out how to get The creative Cloud programs I use (light Room and Photo Shop) off my old Desk top and onto the new desktop. Does any one know how to do this or have already done it, or do you have to cancel the subscription on the old PC and start a new subscription for the new PC.

You do not need to cancel the subscription. You can simply follow the article: Creative Cloud Help | Download, install, update, or uninstall apps which will help you to install the Adobe CC application on your new PC.
If possible you can also deactivate the license from your previous computer using the article: Activation & Deactivation Help.

Can anyone help me? Why does my ipad kick me out of FB? Sometimes to the 'settings' page and sometimes to the desk top? I would like to know why this happens and what I can check or change to make it stop. I have 50.8 GB of capacity available; it is version IOS 5.1.1; model MC497LL. It is WIFI and internet via AT&T? Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
I have a new MacBook Air with a USB super drive. I put in a DVD and I get nothing. No Icon on the desk top, no help from DVD player. How do I get it to play and how to eject it now that it's in?
There's a defect. The computer is in warranty so take it in for repair.

Hi Folks, I am in the process of trashing files apps etc that I don't need. I found a folder called Sync Services (84 kb on disk). Within that was a folder called Schemas (76 kb on disk). In that was Microsoft Office Notes.syncshema (68 KB on disk).
