Odd stuff - recording delay - automatic channel Strip changes

Recently I upgraded my interface from a MOTU 828MKII, to a Metric Halo 2882. I also upgraded from Logic 8 to 9. The problem is, I did this in the middle of a project. This project was/is just a test of a whole new upgrade to my home studio including some preamps/mics/interface/acoustic treatment/etc. Up to this point I mainly recorded my own stuff (5yrs), no big deal. But I'm thinking of moving this into a part time gig. So I asked a some friends if they'd be interested in free recording as guinea pigs.
The first day (Saturday) we tracked drums into the MOTU on Logic 8, as my Metric Halo interface hadn't arrived yet. Everything went good. That Monday, my Metric Halo arrived. I switched out the MOTU, and had the 2882 up and running by Wednesday. Thursday, I installed Logic 9 and updated to 9.1. I had all weekend to work though some of the new stuff, and it all sounded good.
By Monday I had the guitar/singer come by to lay down the rhythm guitar. When we recorded it, with the same settings as in the previous session, although with Logic 8 and a Motu interface, the guitar was around 246 samples late. I adjusted the Recording Delay ahead 246 samples, and it made it slower. I adjusted back 246, still not right. So we called the session.
I've scoured forums, and the only info I can find is plugin latency, and I/O buffer settings. I never had any issue with the MOTU as far as recording delay goes. I had latency issues, but nothing that actually recorded. It was my understanding that, the I/O buffer only affects the monitoring latency, everything "goes to tape" correctly though. I've spent the last 4-5 days trying to figure this out. If I start a new project with the 2882, everything syncs up great, no delay at all. But if I try to add to any project that was started with the MOTU, and Logic 8, I get a recorded delay.
The frustrating part of this is, last night, I updated Logic to 9.1.1, and recorded a loopback click. It worked fine. No delay at all. I tested a bass through the same recording chain I used before, and it was perfect too. I'm not sure if this was a fix in the new update, or I have some other instability thing going on. Any Ideas there?
Also, after updating last night I had a weird problem with plugins that were disabled, suddenly re-engaging. It seemed as though when I would do any changes in the MIO Console, I would come back to Logic, and random plugins would be re-enabled. I'll check tonight if this is repeatable, but last night it was a bother. I also had a Focusrite LiquiMix running at the same time. Maybe this was causing a problem. It did seem to only affect the channel strips that the LiquidMix inserts were on.
Thanks,
Erik

Thanks very much; I'm still perplexed though. You're right, the "mono->stereo" plug-ins yield stereo effects for the guitar; but I'm referring to the pre-assembled "sets" of plug-ins that are accessed by clicking on the word "inserts" (above the various slots for plug-ins). When you click on this word, all sorts of effects-sets are offered: for drums, vocals, pianos, guitars, etc. I'm referring to one for "electric guitar" (under "distorted guitar") called "Angus on SG + MS 1959" (though this is true of the other effects in this same category for electric guitar). Here's why things don't make sense to me: 1) since this effects-set ("Angus...") works just fine if it's applied AFTER I've recorded the guitar dry, why should it NOT work when I'm recording with the effect? I.e., I don't need a special double guitar plug for my Firepod for the effect to work on the signal it HAS recorded; so why should the special double plug be necessary WHILE recording? Meanwhile, 2) given that this is a GUITAR effect (Angus Young playing his Gibson SG through a 1959 Marshall Stack), and guitars always have mono output, then how can it be that Logic, by design, should require users to buy a special stereo plug when using effect-sets specifically designed for guitar? .... That's why I'm perplexed. I do think your two suggestions will work; but it just seems impossible to me that Logic is actually designed to work in this way -- at least not on purpose. On the other hand, I'm a newbie, and I may be missing something that's obvious. Sure would appreciate hearing whether it seems to people that there's a problem with my set-up (or with Logic), or whether the physical stereo-plug solution is actually a well-known practice that I am simply not familiar with. Many thanks!
You have recorded only one chanel on a stereo track.
Use a second input on your firepod or use mono ->
stereo plugins on a mono track to hear them in stereo.

  • How do I get an instrument channel strip?

hello all, I am trying to get a track to be assigned to a "New instrument" icon in the Environment. Now if I re assign a track to that icon I get a GM channel strip instead of an instrument channel strip-any ideas how to change this? I am using Logic pro 9.1.1.

Bedankt voor de antwoord, Jan. I better switch to english so others may learn. I am setting up Pete Thomas' "combo re-mapper" and it needs to start there. Google the two terms and you may find Petes' web site-lots of info and nice stuff for Logic. It turns out that I had to remove a vink[check] in the prefs for automatic channel strip handling to get the Environment drop down list to allow instrument channel strips.
Als je wil, kunnen we elkaar soms helpen als er geen antwoord op de forums voor handen is.

  • Automate Guitar Channel Strip Settings

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to automate a change is the Channel Strip setting during a performance. For instance, is there automate a change from:
    02 Electric Guitar/02 Complete Rigs/Rock/Bell-Bottomed Stack
    to say....
    02 Electric Guitar/03 Clean/03 Clean Delay/Clean Trashy Delay
at some point within the performance (and back again, etc).
This would sure beat stomping on pedals or trying to program automation of multiple amp settings and effects settings, etc. Thanks
    Paul

I don't know if there is but I do know there's a WAY to make it happen. One way around the sound change automation idea is to record your guitar performance then copy it on another track. Two tracks of the same performance, You after all have 255 tracks available so space isn't an issue. Assign one set of guitar settings to one track and a different set to the other then decide where in the song "track one" plays and where in the song "track two" plays. You can do this using a volume automation or even cutting parts you don't want to play. Done correctly it will sound like one track with a sound change at the correct times and one advantage of doing this is you can have both tracks play at the same time or even run them in stereo. (One in the left speaker and one in the right)
Again there MAY be a way to change the sound profile mid track but if there isn't the above idea will do the trick and give you some added sound options OVER changing the sound profile mid track.

  • Recording Control Surface automation to a channel strip

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone could help me.
I have a Novation Remote 25 SL which its perfectly connected with Logic as a Control Surface.
What I want is to record live all the moments i do with Mixer in Logic using Remote Sl as a Control Surface while my track is playing. I want to record it to one channel strip or somewhere were i can edit them later. Is it possible? Thanks in advance.

Read the automation section in the manual.
Basically - switch all channels you wish to automate into Latch mode to write automation. Put them back to read mode to avoid overwriting. Logic has full automation editing.

  • Automatic management of Channel Strip Objects...

This is the function that automatically creates mixer objects (i.e. channels, auxes, etc) in Logic when you add tracks. Before I discovered it, Logic 8 drove me nuts trying to outthink me, because I have a very specific pre-configured mixer environment I use (I never use the track mixer view, only the environent view). This is because I have two Mackie controls, and I very much like my mixer set up in blocks of sixteen channels (otherwise the control surfaces become kind of arbitrary). I'm also not a big fan of the track mixer because having all the mixer channels oriented in a continuous horizontal fashion gets really silly when you're doing a 56-channel mix (with 20 or so auxes to the right of that!)
    Oh yes, my issue...
Even with the "Automatic Management of Channel Strip Objects" checkbox unchecked, Logic still insists on creating new aux objects in the environment when I set up a send. This is annoying and confusing, because dry sound gets routed to the main 1-2 bus (and occasionally confusing, because my default mixer is very large, so the new aux gets put somewhere where you don't immeditely see it).
Hence Logic needs a new command:
"I really, really don't want you to automatically create audio objects for me, I was really serious about it when I unchecked the Automatic Management of Channel Strip Objects checkbox, I am smart enough to handle it on my own, if I wasn't I'd use Garageband, or some other app that doesn't have the word Pro in it"
Maybe something a little shorter would suffice... or just make the Automatic Management of Channel Strip Objects checkbox work properly :>)

well, i work with a static environment layer and the track mixer for years now. this gives me the flexibility i need.
i need the track mixer for the control surface and i like to only see the channels i have in the arrange here. anything else will just waste channels on the control surface.
in addition to this i use a static environment layer for effect returns and stuff like that.
i work with a lot of hardware and this setup of track mixer and environment has been very helpfull when working.
i programmed my control surface so that i can switch between these two with a push of a button.
this is really fast and easy to work with.
maybe this stupid auto toggle back on thing is a bug. i'll writa a bug report and hope they fix it soon.
    thanks anyway

  • Changing FX plug in settings for channel strip aliases?

I've been trying to migrate my live performance rig from Kore 2 to Mainstage 3, and truth be told it has not been easy, nor yet successful.  Every time I overcome one roadblock to something that was so easy to set in Kore, another problem presents itself.  Thanks to much help from the users in this group, I got a handle on getting through the biggest obstacle of Mainstage ignoring PG changes to channel strips by using Multitimbral settings.
Here's the next huge stumbling block.  In Kore, I was able to set up any instance (roughly the equivalent of a Mainstage channel strip) with a series of insert effects plug ins, i.e. a piano patch with both parametric and graphic EQ, compression, etc. and was able to choose which effect(s) would be in use or defeated for a given performance preset and change the settings of any of the plug ins and be able to save them on a per preset basis.
While the capacity to load several insert FX exists in Mainstage, it appears that any changes to an effect are global across the aliases.  While I understand that only voume, pan and expression can have separate settings on an alias, I'm searching for some kind of workaround to this issue.  All I came up with was using separate busses for each FX chain each having their own settings, but that seems like a horribly inefficient use of resources.  Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

That is not possible, because an alias is simple the _identical_ channel strip in different patches. Any change will be reflected on all occurences of the alias.

  • Can program change info be sent to the channel strip?

Hi there, I have old logic midi files to update for use in logic pro7. I have set up an autoload template which I then drag the old logic files into so that I get the environment settings that I want and have some uniformity with all my files.
Is there a way I can get program change info and midi instrument settings from the event list, (in the midi tracks dragged in) transfered/sent into the channel strip?
Can the track info like control change, volume settings, pg ch, etc be sent to the channel strip so that they match?
I struggled trying to explain that I hope it's clear. Please help if you can.
    Cheers,
    Mojo

i think you have to double the track, and have the different CS on each channel

  • Why does recording delay change?

so yesterday i recorded vox and acoustic gtr totally fine. then i went to add bass today and i get a huge recording lag in placement of recorded audio. what changed this? everythings been stable for months. do i really have to go through all this recording delay calculation trouble just to have it work right again? seems totally ridiculous.
    cory

Did anything at all change between yesterday and today? Did you add any latency inducing plug-ins (or are you using any currently)?
As well, updating your profile, as far as equipment goes, might help zero in on your problem.

  • Changing channel strip settings

When I create a new track, and at the top of the channel strip select "setting" to select a Mainstage Guitar Rig or Electric Effect, for example, everything works great. But when I go back to change the the same setting to another effect or rig, the program won't let me change it. What am I doing wrong?

Just to re-ask this same question as its not received any responses....
I'm fairly new to Logic, having been using it (and enjoying the learning curve) for about 4 months. Until today, I've been able to select a new channel strip setting by clicking on the 'Settings' button at the top and change this at will. However, I'm suddenly finding once I've selected a setting, I can no longer re-select another via this method - I just get no response when clicking on the button. However, I am still able to access various settings via the library.
I'm assuming I've inadvertently changed something, but cannot work out what.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

  • A problem with channel strip outputs in Logic Pro 8

I have a Power Mac G5 2.3GHz dual core processor with 2GB memory, running LogicPro 8 connected to a MOTU 2408 Mk3. I originally assigned the outputs on the individual channel strips on my Logic default work page to the individual outputs on the MOTU, (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.,) as this is the optimum configuration for the amount of channels required for the recording I do. Checking theses settings recently though, I find the menu only gives the option to set outputs to 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 & 7-8? What has happened and how can I change them back?
    Thanks

Sounds like your channel strips are stereo and not mono.
Click on the little linked circle button (format button) in the bottom of the channel strip to set it's mode to MONO (single circle).
If you have effect plugins inserted on the channel strip make sure they are mono and not stereo. (Click and hold on the effect on the insert slot and choose the mono instance of the plugin from the plugin menu).
    Hope that helps

  • Quick comparison of patches vs. channel strip vs set vs concert ..????

    howdy
just trying to differentiate between patches - channel strips - sets and concerts -
i will be using mainstage for keysounds triggered by my midi keyboard....drum sound triggered by midi drum i/o .....and hopefully guitar and vox as well -
would each channel strip correspond to an instrument? (drums, keys, guit, vox)
and then each channel has a patch (tone) ??
then whats a set and concert exactly?
im sure this is a noob question, but nonetheless would like an explanation based on anyones personal experience..
my greatest concern is latency, so any info on the proper hierarchy and safe guards (muting patches when they are not processing audio???) to reduce delay would be greatly appreciated
    fro

Concert = the file; it contains everything, sets, patches & channel strips.
Set = a collection of patches & their channel strips. This is an organisational device that allows you to sort patches by various criteria. EG, in one concert, I have two sets with identical guitar channel strips but with a different synth for each set.
Patch = a collection of channel strips. These can be any mixture of audio and synth, eg CS1 guitar, CS2 voice, CS3 synth 1, CS4 synth 2 etc
In addition you may have as many busses as you need.
Now to the confusing part. The hierarchy listed above is a good way to start with MainStage. It is simple and clear.
If you have a channel strip that will not change during a set, it may be more efficient to insert it at the Set level rather than the Patch level. That way, you only have to set it up once. Why would you want to do this when it is so easy to set up a channel strip? just a couple of mouse clicks should suffice.
Inserting a channel strip at Set level means that you only have to set up the MIDI controls for that patch once in the editor. This can save a lot of time if you have a synth with a complex control structure.
I understand that only the active patch in MainStage uses processor power. (If I am wrong, you should get a correction fairly soon.) The only problem I find with large concerts is the length of time it can take for a large concert to load.

  • LP 9 NOT DISPLAYING EQ or INSERTS ON OUTPUT CHANNEL STRIPS

This is odd: Logic is not displaying EQ or Inserts on some of the Stereo Output Channel Strips. Instead of "Output 1 - 2" I have a "Master Output" with no EQ or Inserts. When I check the other stereo output strips I find that only one (output 7-8) is displaying properly. How can I fix this?
    Thanks!

The output is turned on, yes. This is a session I did in Logic Pro 7 and opened in LP9. Again, as I said, OUTPUT 3-4, 5-6 also do not show up properly. Only Output 7-8 shows up w/EQ and Inserts showing.
I've opened several other LP7 sessions in LP9 and not had this problem. LP9 refuses to see the output (1-2) correctly.
When I turn off "Master" in the mixer window (upper right corner buttons), nothing changes. When I turn off "Outputs", the Master disappears.

  • Using Platinum Voicemaster Pro Vocal Channel Strip with Logic Pro & MBox 3

    Hiya,
I was wondering if you can help me please.
I have a small little home studio that I am currently building (just to record vocals mainly to instrumentals as I am singer/songwriter).
I am currently using Logic Pro 9 and MBOX Mini 3 as my midi interface but my producer who is based overseas told me to get a preamp. Many musicians have suggested I purchase Platinum Voicemaster Pro Vocal Channel Strip. CAN ANY CONFIRM WHETHER THIS WILL WORK WITH LOGIC PRO 9 AND GIVE ANY ADVICE AS TO HOW IS THE BEST WAY TO USE IT WITH LOGIC PRO 9 AND MY MBOX MINI 3?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.
    RUSHELLA
    X

Thank you both for your input. I am back on the case again, this time with a fully functioning FCB1010. Right ou of the box the pedal does successfully send volume and pan with expression pedal a and b respectively.
What I would next like to accomplish is to have exp. ped. b now control a plug-in parameter instead, the pedal range on the fuzz-wah plug-in of Logic Pro 7 for expample.
When I use Automation Quick Access to edit the assignment of ped. b as Bryan suggested, Logic appears to be receiving the info from ped. b and creating the new assignment (as indicated in the Controller Assignments window), and yet the actual functionality doesn't change, that is, ped. b continues to control pan.
    Any suggestions?

  • Recording a different channel when switching a series to SD from HD.

When changing a series recording from "HD preferred" to "SD preferred", it records on a different channel - in this case, an NBC affiliate that is listed as airing the show, but in fact it just shows a screen that says it's not airing the show because the other channel (NBC proper) is carrying it and it won't duplicate the show. Why did it change channels that it was recording when I switched to non-HD? Shouldn't it just record the same channel in SD? Or can you set the defaults on your end to be the main channel (NBC) instead of automatically going to affiliate channels which may or may not actually be airing the show (usually not)?  Or can you allow us to choose which channel in the Options menu when we set it to record?  Instead, we have to cancel the recordings, go to the guide, find the main channel, and then scroll through a week's worth of programming to get to the show, so we can re- set it up to record but with "this channel only" as the option.  It's a huge pain every time.  And then we have to hope the show that didn't record is available on On Demand; otherwise, we don't get to watch it.

    Hi!
If you look on the channel guide, you'll see that there are two NBC channels NBC-D (this is the HD channel) and the regular NBC, or as you say, NBC proper (this is not the HD channel). When you record an HD version of the program, it records the HD version from the HD channel. When you record the SD version, it will record from the channel that does not broadcast in HD.
    Hope this helps,
    Gwen
