Odd symbol next to mailboxes

When I open Apple Mail there is a circle with a triangle with an exclaimation mark in it next to the inbox. I rebuilt the mailbox from the mailbox menu, but it remained. I just took another look and now it's gone.
I've seen it before. It comes and goes. What does it signify? What should I do in response?

It indicates a server or network issue. Click on it, and Mail will pop out a message about it. If you have more than one email account, you have more than one Inbox mailboxes. Click on the disclosure triangle on the left of the mailbox icon, and it will expand to show you the individual mailboxes; the problem account will be indicated.

  • Meaning of clock symbol next to mailbox

One of my mailboxes in mail.app has a symbol next to it that resembles a clock (a circle in which the sector from noon until 1 o'clock has been shaded). What does this mean? More generally, is there a table somewhere that explains the meaning of all the various icons and symbols that occur here and there in mail?

It means Mail is trying to fetch mail for that folder (usually the Inbox.) If it remains that may mean Mail is not able to connect with your email servers. You may get more information by clicking on the symbol.

  • Odd symbol appeared on phone 3110c yesterday

I have an odd symbol that appeared on my phone yesterday that I think a few other people on these boards have experienced but no-one knows what it is. I took my phone into the Orange shop and they didn't know what it was either! It's not in the instruction manual.
It looks a bit like a printer or a fax machine, a grey square on top of a grey rectangle and sits in the indicators area of the screen next to the battery charge indicator.
It disappears when I navigate away from the home screen. Its not something associated with my voicemail, or missed calls, or messages, or any of the settings I've changed. I've tried resetting the phone and it still refuses to budge. Any ideas anyone?
    thanks, Sarah

    Hey @woaksie
Actually you need to press the Left Soft Key while you're on call settings. This will then display the sub-items of Call Settings and the first option should be Call Divert.
So here it is in a correct manner: Use the up Up, Down, Left, Right directional keys to scroll around.
Open Menu by pressing the left soft key.
Scroll to the Settings menu item. Press the Left soft Key.
Scroll to the item called Call Settings. Press the Left Soft Key.
Locate Call Divert (Usually the first option). Press the Left Soft Key.
Check for a list item called Cancel All Diverts (usually the last in the list). Press the left soft key to cancel the active diverts in place.
BTW are you able to receive calls on your number? Diverts should forward calls to another number hence you being unable to receive them. However, sometimes the carriers also set-up the Automatic Diverts on all the numbers. Such as to forward the call to Voice Mailbox in case the number is not reachable or switched off. So if the Cancel all Diverts option fails to remove that icon, you will be needed to talk to Orange.

  • I have the exclamation point symbol next to podcasts that don't meet the criteria for said symbol based on the FAQ

When I'm looking through and trying to manage my Podcast library within iTunes, I see the exclamation point symbol next to several. My first issue is the fact that there are many that have this symbol that I only wanted a few episodes and not a subscription. How can I fix this problem?
My second issue is that for many of the podcasts with the exclamation point symbol, they don't fit the criteria based on what's in the Symbol FAQ, which states that there are too many unplayed episodes so new episodes won't download. For the podcasts in question, this is not the case, as all episodes have been listened to. What can be done to fix this problem?
My third issue is the fact that when I DO play a podcast on my iPod Touch (4th Gen), I don't use the app (can't stand it), then go to sync it with the computer, these episodes are shown as having already been played PRIOR to the actual syncing happening. So, when I go to do the ACTUAL sync, the play count is off. Right now, I have to manually reset the play count so that the episodes that I listened to on my iPod Touch only show one play in the library count, not two or in some cases, three. How can I fix this problem?
I have the most current version of iTunes and use Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks for ANY help!

I have more than one copy of the same song in my iTunes. Some have the icloud symbol next to them and some do not. I need to clean this up but I am afraid to delete the songs for fear I will lose them. Please help! On top of that my Mac keeps telling me my start up disc is full and I am deleting stuff like crazy!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
It won't be a problem if you delete your extra copies.
I don't download very much to my tv, I do sometimes if I'm in bed but usually I do it from itunes. However if you have not fully downloaded something to the tv it is possible to start the download from itunes as well, you have likely activated 'check for downloads fin itunes in some way, could be by opening itunes, selecting 'check or downloads' from the advanced menu or that you simply have automatically check for downloads set in your prefs and it has checked coincidentally.

  • Symbol next to new message, and message won't load...

I keep receiving new messages, and when I try to open them, they just show up blank. To fix this I just reset mail. I get this symbol next to the message when this happens though. I'll attach it.

Yep. I did some more poking around and found that one. Downloaded it and tried to run it and got more errors. Did some more searching and found a fix for the installer on Vista. Ran the fix and tried the ipod software again. It got further, but then hung up again. I'm still trying to figure this all out. Anyone got any answers it'd be much appreciated.

  • Why does my ipod touch 5th gen not charge when plugged into my computer? (it keeps stuttering(lightning symbol next to bettery goes on and off literally every second))

so I have my ipod touch 5th gen connect and the little lightning symbol, next to the battery on the top left, keeps flashing on and off every second. I don't know what to do and also it doesn't show up on iTunes.

Hey Ed, Try trouble shooting 101. Do you have a different cable and/or charging device? If so, try the different cable first, then a different charging device. If the problem goes away, I'd say it's the cable, replace it. If with in 1 from date of purchase, Apple will replace for free if the cable is found to be defective. If the problem continues with a different cable or a different charging device, then the problem is with your iPod. With a strong light and a magnifying glass look in the iPod's charging port. Your looking for damage in and around the port. Is the port lose? (shouldn't be). Are pieces missing or damaged? Bent or damaged contact pins can do what you describe. Foreign debris, namely pocket lint or corrosion can also cause charging issues. If you see something like lint, try to blow it out, or if you must use a non-conductive probe, I find a round wooden toothpick works well to carefully remove the lint from the bottom of the port. Just be careful to not touch, bend or damage the gold contact pins on the long side of the port. Also make sure the locking pins on the short ends (looks like two silver bumps, one on each end) of the port are free to move. If you find corrosion, try plugging / unplugging about 12 times to clean the contacts off. If you must use a cotton swab cut to fit, with a drop of 91% isopropyl alcohol on it, you want it damp, not wet, then plug it in and out until the swab comes out clean. You will most likely need several swabs. If you find nothing physically wrong, then try resetting your iPod. If that does not work, restore from backup, last resort, make a backup then restore to new, a full factory restore. If issue continues see your Apple store and have it evaluated for a possible hardware issue. But start with a different or new cable. Good luck, Cheers.

Can you identify the symbol using the above guide?
(Note that I am a representative of the organization of the above link, which is not endorsed by Apple).
Just a friendly comment that the list described on this link is incomplete.  If you are a rep of the site, you should update it to include additional symbols, such as the personal hotspot icon, the LTE icon, and the bluetooth device battery level icon.

  • Why do confirmed invitees have (?) symbol next to name?

In iCal 4.0.4, when an invitee to an event that I set up confirms their attendance at the event, it is still showing a little question mark (?) symbol to the left of that person's name in my calendar.
Even if I double-click on the iCal icon in the "Event Accepted" email I receive, the status symbol next to that person's name doesn't change.
Both of us are using iMacs and even using the exact same OS version. This used to work at one time. How can I fix this so that Confirmed invitees appear as confirmed in my calendar?

In my case, I don't think it has even sent out the requests, but I cannot figure out why.

  • Dashed circle symbol next to songs.

I put 4 albums on my computer from Google Play. Added them to ITunes and then synced with IPod Touch. 2 albums transferred no problem, other 2 show up with dashed circle symbol next to the songs and they aren't really on my IPod. I accidentally deleted one of the transferred songs and when I put it back in, it now has a dashed circle next to it and won't play. I have rebooted both computer and IPod.Any suggestions?

OK, just got off with Apple Support. One of the songs I added to ITunes somehow corrupted during the add. After that, no more songs will download. I had to delete all songs off my IPod and then readd them. Downloads all working now with no problems.
A BIG THANKS TO APPLE SUPPORT!
