Odd System Hangs [SOLVED]

I have a cleanly installed Arch (x86) system on a Dell Vostro 1500
Intel 2.5 GHz Core 2
Braodcom Wireless (ndiswrapper)
4GB Ram
250 GB Western Digital HDD (sata)
nvidia 8400 GS 256 MB
1650x1080 Resolution
Built in UVC web cam
I seem to be having these completely random and odd system hangs.
It prevents me from using my computer for more than a few minutes at a time.
When it hangs, its usually what ever process im in gets stuck, i cant kill it completely all the time. Sometimes i can using top as root and sometimes i can using kill -kill but sometimes i cant at all and that is usually when the PPID is 1.
When I try to shutdown or reboot either from in gnome or one of the virtual consoles, it always says something about either the root or home partition unable to be unmounted, that they are still busy.
my partition layout is such:
sda1    NTFS    Vista (I have to have it because of stupid itunes/iphone)
sda2    ext2     boot
sda3    xfs       root
extended:
sda5    xfs       home
sda6   swap     swap
my ntfs partition is about 50GB and when i boot into vista i dont get the same hangs, so i don't think its a hard drive issue (but could be an partition issue)
boot partition is something like 300MB
root is something like 12 GB
Home is something like 70 gb
and swap is about 2gb
It does not matter whether or not im in gnome since if at log in screen, ill hit ctrl+alt+f1 and switch to a consol and do something as simple as like update the computer and ill cause it to hang sometimes (but not every time its too unpredictable)
When in gnome however, most applications refuse to launch and sometimes even close. The gnome-panel and some (like the system monitor) lock up but things like cpu freq scaling continues to work as does log out and the menu.
i have also had issues with the latest (-3) nvidia driver and can only get 1680x1050 resolution using the open source nv drivers (haven't had a chance to build from aur the beta drivers yet since there is an issue with the nvidia-utils-beta package) but i don't think this is causing it.
i used the western digital tool to do a hard drive scan, and it didn't find anything in the quick scan but it is still running the full scan.
I suspect it might be due to some package upgrade, i was running arch before the reformat and it was causing me to have the same issues.
i have kicked my personal Ubuntun (and derivatives) additional because of Arch's rolling release cycle so that's why i would rather put up with it for another week to figure this out!
Let me know if there is any log files i should post or anything that way i can get this fixed! And thanks in advanced (even to those of you who will probably only comment to make fun of vista, it still will keep my thread alive! )

  • [SOLVED]System Hang in Arch Linux

    I have tried distributions like ubuntu and fedora in hope for finding a stable system . So I move on to Arch Linux
    But this problem also exist on Arch. While using my Arch Linux (including ubuntu and fedora) my system hangs with a black screen with something written on the whole screen which cannot be pasted here as my system hangs and I have to push power button to restart.
    So I check my errors.log file and found these errors
    Jul  8 22:59:24 localhost kernel: [    1.680013] ata3: softreset failed (device not ready)
    Jul  8 22:59:24 localhost kernel: [    7.298612] SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use
    Jul  8 22:59:31 localhost kdm_greet[792]: Cannot load /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory
    I have a HCL K21 pdc notebook
    Note: In Ubuntu my notebook start with ata1: softreset failed error at boot time
    Most often this error occur while watching videos or listening music with VLC

  • Firefox 3.6 when I open a SWF file, a wrong mouse click, it show a recursive open window until the PC resource is used up or the system hang up, I try to reinstall firefox but not solved.

    Windows XP SP3, flash player 10.2, Shockwave 11.5.9.240 , when I open a SWF file with firefox 3.6.15, it shows some options to choose action and I made a wrong click. The firefox nightmare is a "open recursive windows" until the system hang. When I use Internet Explorer 8 to open it, it is fine, Try to uninstall firefox and reinstall it, but in vain, how can I restore it?

    You don't have the Shockwave Flash Player installed for Firefox. You may have the ActiveX version installed for IE, but Firefox needs the Plugin version. And Shockwave 11.5.9.240 that is installed for Firefox isn't the same thing.
    1.Download the Flash setup file from here: <br />
    [http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Adobe Flash - Plugin version]. <br />
    ''Or maybe get the previous '''r102''' version from here. IMO, there's problems with the latest version of Flash.'' <br />
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html <br />
    Save it to your Desktop.<br />
    2. Close Firefox using File > Exit <br />
    then check the Task Manager > Processes tab to make sure '''firefox.exe''' is closed, <br />
    {XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC = Processes tab}
    3. Then run the Flash setup file from your Desktop.
    * On Vista and Windows 7 you may need to run the plugin installer as Administrator by starting the installer via the right-click context menu if you do not get an UAC prompt to ask for permission to continue (i.e nothing seems to happen). <br />
    See this: <br />

  • [SOLVED] System hangs on boot, reinstalling Arch doesn't help

    After a recent upgrade (including the kernel), my system hangs on boot.  I have an Asus K40IN laptop, about 2 years old.  I've been running Arch for the life of the computer and never had any (serious) problems.
    I booted into a live Arch environment, tried rebuilding the mkinitcpio image, didn't work.  Tried downgrading the kernel, didn't work.
    I then assumed it was just some software issue that I couldn't figure out, so I reinstalled Arch.  No change.
    Here's what my screen looks like when it hangs:
    Any ideas would be very much appreciated.  I'm completely stumped here.
    Last edited by noahsark1126 (2011-06-15 23:32:34)

    jnguyen:
    I have another arch system, a desktop, that I tend to keep pretty much in sync with my laptop.  So I can look in the logs on that system to see what was upgraded.  The other notable packages in that upgrade were probably udev, initscripts, and mkinitcpio.  I will try downgrading those.
    Leonid.I:
    I'm using the 2010.05 arch release, which has kernel 2.6.33.  I see two cores in the live env, as I should, and there's nothing to suggest any problems in the logs.
    I'm actually now getting a completely different hang screen:
    Of course I don't know what this one means either...

  • [SOLVED] System hangs when maximizing Terminal (new kernel 2.6.38)

    I am using terminal [ 0.4.7-1 (xfce4)] and when i maximize the window, system hangs for about 4 sec. The output of dmesg for that issue is:
    NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 13, 0000 e0019700 00004097 00001808 00000000 00000010
    NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
    I use the nvidia 270.41.03-1 drivers. Also, that is not happening with other terminals like xterm.

    My XFCE4 system doesn't hang.. but I have an NVIDIA card too, and when I resize TERMINAL it does this:
    First, the picture of the terminal before resizing.
    Next, this picture, which shows what the screen does after resizing Terminal:

  • IMac G5 system hang - 2 bad 1GB memory modules?

    I am experiencing intermittent system hangs, requiring power off / on to recover. Applications run fine for hours, then everything freezes; a few seconds later the fans spool up full bore. There seems to be no logic to the failure. It happens on many different applications, including Disk Utility. No new software has been added recently (other than Apple software updates). This has been occuring for several weeks.
    I repair permissions & run disk verify. When disk utility runs completely without hanging (on verify), everything is ok.
    Applecare had me trash the ~/Library/Caches & system caches. No joy. They recommended archive & install beginning with Panther. Reinstall went ok until downloading updates for 10.4.8, then hang (might this suggest a hardware prob?).
    Rebooted in target firewire mode the cloned drive, then zero'ed the G5 HDD and restored from clone (SuperDuper!). Everything appeared ok for several days, then the same system hang reappeared. I should mention that in the course of sudying this one, I discovered Virex 7.5 was sucking the processing life from the G5; used the uninstaller to get rid of it & the iMac is quiet again!
    I have run the Applecare version of Techtools and the Hardware Test Disk, everything passes.
    I could do a clean install of Tiger, then use migration assistant to move data from the clone...if I felt it had a chance to solve it. On the other hand, maybe its a flaky hardware gremlin and I'm wasting my time doing reinstalls, and I should hustle it over to the local Apple store.
    Update - took iMac for service at Apple store where it failed under stress test with my 2 GB of memory but ran for an extended period with Apple memory. In an attempt to isolate which of the two 1 GB modules was bad, removed one module. Identical failure after 24 hrs. Howver, swapping out that failing module with the second module, identical hand. That suggests either both 1 GB modules are bad (unikely), or some other hardware issue is the problem.
    Problem seems to occur most often when starting playing iTunes, or running Disk Utility (repair permissions).
    I suppose the next step is to buy 1 GB of memory from Apple and make it fail again. Any suggestions?

    Thank you for your posts, I appreciate it.
    Skip - I tried a spare keyboard & mouse. Still failed.
    MGW - all software is up to date.
    DaddyPaycheck - I downloaded memtestosx. It fails testing each 1GB memory module separately (in different sockets). I'm running in multiuser mode and when it fails the entire iMac freezes up (just like it always does), requiring power off / power on. Is this normal behavior when the memtestosx test fails?
    I will plan to test in single user mode as the supplied doc states that if the onboard cache is failing it would pass singleuser (cache apparently disabled in singleuser mode) but fail multiuser. Maybe the onboard cache is bad?
    Thanks.

  • Strange system hang using rmi

    Hi, I read for several hours now, but I can't find a hint what problem I'm experiencing. Perhaps someone has an idea?
    I have a small java application (jdk1.3.1_08) which starts a RMIRegistry, binds an object name. It then starts another java application in another jvm using Runtime.exec(...).
    Everything fine until here. The second application starts and works fine.
    BUT: Now I close app2 and start it again from app1. Basically everything works also this time. But there is a delay at startup from app2 which I cannot explain. App2 hangs for 10 secondes up to 70 seconds, between two debug outputs!!!
    Every little hint is appreciated!!
    Torsten.

    I think the hanging of app2 is not depending on what it actually does. But I try to explain some more, you're right:
    App1 is kind of a starter environment, a launch center for several applications. One of these applications is my app2. The reason for using rmi and the second jvm is that I now can use a System.exit(0) in app2 without killing the launch center (app1). When I start app2 standalone from command line without rmi, then it starts without the strange system hang.
    What does app2 do?
    App2 has a starting time of about 30 seconds (standalone) where several things are initialized. In detail, it is a Swing application using the oracle framework JClient for data binding of Swing components and the oracle framework BC4J for mapping to an oracle database. The system hang when started in the second jvm occurs in the startup process, but not at a specific point in the programm. This means: on PC1 it hangs everytime between the same two debug outputs, on PC2 (a bit faster) it hangs later in the code. Thats the reason why I think, there could be a rmi problem.
    What I did not mention yet: The launch center (app1) builds a kind of transfer object which is passed via rmi to app2 in the second jvm.
    Does this help to solve my problem? I really run out of ideas what to do...

    Hi,
    if you post message, it would be great if you could include more information on the errors you are encountering. "startsap does not work" is not useful to give advises. You also may have get a quicker answer if you split up your long messages into smaller ones. In the middle of the text I found a simple question:
    How will I create the db2support file? Can you give me the command for this?
    Just use the db2support tool, which is described in detail in the DB2 documentation.
    I know that multiple customers has managed to setup SAP on DB2 using HACMP. In addition some customers use the new Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms (SAMP).
    Oh, I currently see that your message is from last year. I suppose you have solved the problems already.
    Regards, Jens

  • Lion 10.7.1 system hangs after reboot

    Strange, I have just updated to 10.7.1 (via SW update) on my Macbook Pro and now the system does not boot. It restarted and now hangs since minutes with the spinning wheel on a grey screen. Anyone experienced this, too? Any solutions?
    Thanks a lot.

    Regarding the occasional system hang on reboot people are experiencing. I have two troubleshooting suggestions to help you get to the login screen, but aren't solutions to the problem of whatever is causing the system hang. 1) I find my hangs are usually solved by removing my USB devices from the 2 USB ports (via USB hubs) and rebooting. 2) Furthermore, if I boot into verbose mode (holding command+v right before the chime) (sometimes after removing the USB devices, sometimes not), that usually helps the boot process along, either due to just chance (I don't know why booting into verbose mode would help it surmount the initial hang, but it seems to work sometimes) or some other reason.
    Good luck.
    Yeah that better be one big fat good luck there, because that advice is not going to help anyone that is having this problem. Not one little bit. Some kind of magic that Verbose Mode casts will fix it? Uh, no. That would be a figment of your over-eager imagination, Verbose Mode doesn't change anythig. Oh and by the way, in order to get to this stage in the probelm, you would have had to use verbose mode to get the error message.  I can only assume that you sir are the real troll here, because our friend above asked a question that is worth merit and consideration, given the compatibility disaster that Apple has on their hands. To call it a disaster is not in the least bit an exaggeration.
    We're going to have to ignore This is not an "occassional system hang", this is a serious problem affecting my MacBook Pro 17" and my iMac 27"., and it occured on both of them for me after installing Lion Server.

  • Hibernation does not work - System hangs

    Hi, I have T41 laptop with Windows XP. When I tried Hiberation option, system hangs ( message - hibernating......) and does't hibernate. Can you help me with this..
    thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Right,
    Based on the info you supplied, there's one glaring issue that prevents you from using the hibernate feature successfully - the low disk space. Hibernation requires a minimum of 3GB (mostly 3.5GB as a minimum depending on what you're running - processes, etc).
    Alas, one of the only ways to fix that is to upgrade to a larger capacity hard drive or remove some software to make space.

  • Node-webkit Helper causing system hangs

    I'm using the intel XDK developer tool and having frequent system hangs when node-webkit Helper is accessed. The CPU use in monitor is ofter in excess of 100%. I've seen other people having problems with node-webkit Helper on OSX with different apps. Does anyone know of a solution for this?

    There are two fairly common reasons why an update doesn't work properly:
    1. Use of a Delta updater instead of the Combo Updater. The latter seems to cause fewer problems or, rather, may "fix" some problems that the Delta updater misses.
    2. The user needed to repair the hard drive and permissions prior to installing the update. This is the most common problem. Installing an update on a system that is corrupted or where permissions are invalid will usually cause the resulting updated system to malfunction.
    In some cases there are actual system files that have become corrupted and cause an update to malfunction. If this be the case usually it's necessary to do an Archive and Install to replace the old system (hard drive should be repaired prior to doing the Archive and Install.)
    Among troubleshooting efforts to try are: (1) boot into safe mode to see if the problem is solved. Safe mode disables third-party startupitems, contextualmenuitems, and extensions; (2) create a new user account and log into the new account; A new user account has no login items or old preference files. If these are corrupted the system will work properly in the new account; (3) Use a utility such as TinkerTool System to clear user cache files, font files, and log files. If these become corrupted they will cause the system to malfunction.
    Install the freeware utility AppleJack (www.versiontracker.com) on each of your Macs. In the event of severe problems you can boot the computer into single-user mode and run AppleJack to fix many items that cause problems. AppleJack is only run from the commandline in single-user mode.

  • System hangs, but mouse cursor is moving and music keeps on playing

    Hi,
    I'm experiencing very odd behaviour with my MacBook.
    System hangs suddenly. I can't switch to any programs, but music keeps on playing and mouse cursor moving. It stays like this forever unless I force laptop to shutdown (by pressing the power button over 5 secs).
    Few things that I've noticed when system crashed:
    - I had a lot of programs running (Photoshop, Firefox, lots of small apps)
    - I used Expose or alt-tab
    - iTunes is playing music
    Can anyone recommend some tests or tricks that I could run before sending it to the Apple service?

    You might be right about having less apps to consume RAM. I've upgraded my RAM to 2GB because I knew this would be on issue.
    Maybe I just have to start looking for better performance. Something that can house more RAM. 2xQuad Core Mac Pro for example
    Poikkeus wrote:
    - When this problem occurs again, go to the Apple Menu and activate Force Quit. Then, quit applications that may be hanging.
    I tried to point out that mouse cursor is moving but system doesn't respond to any clicks.
    I'll try the Main Menu and keep eye on RAM consumption. I'll post to this thread if it hangs again.

  • System hanging on shutdown

    The home directories on my system are on NFS.
    Most of the times, when users log out of their graphical session, some of their processes keep running (for instance /usr/bin/nepomukserver for KDE users and some processes related to pulse or to chromium).
    When shutting down the system, arch scripts first try unmounting network filesystems, and this fails, since /home is busy; then they send a SIGTERM to processes, and this fails as well (I believe it's because the network has been halted but /home hasn't been mounted), then the system hangs while unmounting non-API filesystems.
    If, before shutting down, I manually kill the user processes (nepomukserver, pulse, chromium, ...), arch is able to shutdown as expected.
    Am I the only one affected by this problem?
    How am I supposed to solve it?
    I'm thinking about writing a script to terminate (`kill` and then `kill -9`) any process using /home (`lsof /home`), but this looks like a terrible hack...

    So, since I couldn't find any other solution, decided to write a script (an init script to add to the DAEMONS array) that kills the processes using /home while halting the machine...
    If anybody will ever need it, here it is:
    /etc/rc.d/pathliberator
    #!/bin/bash
    # Path Liberator
    # kills processes that are using a given path
    DAEMON=pathliberator
    . /etc/rc.conf
    . /etc/rc.d/functions
    [ -r /etc/conf.d/$DAEMON ] && . /etc/conf.d/$DAEMON
    case "$1" in
    start)
    stat_busy "Starting path liberator"
    add_daemon $DAEMON
    stat_done
    stop)
    success=true
    for path in ${PATHS_TO_LIBERATE[@]}
    do
    pids=$( lsof -Fp $path | sed -rs "s/^.(.*)$/\1/g" )
    if [ "$pids" == "" ]
    then
    status "$path was already free" true
    continue
    fi
    # kill -TERM
    stat_busy "Liberating $path"
    kill -15 ${pids[@]} &>/dev/null
    pids=$( lsof -Fp $path | sed -rs "s/^.(.*)$/\1/g" )
    if [ "$pids" == "" ]; then
    stat_done
    continue
    fi
    stat_fail
    pids=$( lsof -Fp $path | sed -rs "s/^.(.*)$/\1/g" )
    # kill -KILL
    stat_busy "Liberating $path with SIGKILL"
    kill -9 ${pids[@]} &>/dev/null
    pids=$( lsof -Fp $path | sed -rs "s/^.(.*)$/\1/g" )
    if [ "$pids" == "" ]; then
    stat_done
    continue
    fi
    stat_fail
    success=false
    done
    status "Paths liberated" $success
    if [ $success ]
    then
    rm_daemon $DAEMON
    fi
    restart)
    $0 stop
    $0 start
    echo "usage: $0 {start|stop|restart}"
    esac
    exit 0
    /etc/conf.d/pathliberator
    # Parameters to be passed to pathliberator
    PATHS_TO_LIBERATE=(/home/)
    It seems to be working, although didn't deeply test it...
    My DAEMONS array now looks like this:
    DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng cpufreq network crond nscd dbus rpcbind nfs-common netfs pathliberator gpm sshd @ntpdate alsa fuse gdm avahi-daemon)

  • System hangs with radeon card and vgaswitcheroo

    I have an HP Envy 17-3200 with an integrated HD4000 (i915) and an ATI M7850 (radeon).  These modules are both included in the kernel via mkinitcpio.  I am using systemd but have enabled the rc-local service to run at boot (rc.local is run).  This turns off the discrete card via vgaswitcheroo.  Given this configuration, the system boots normally into gdm.  However, when I attempt to switch graphics cards via:
    $ echo DDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    $ sudo systemctl restart gdm.service
    The system hangs (I have to force a reset).  This happens regardless of whether I echo OFF into vgaswitcheroo.  This does not happen if I restart gdm without switching cards.
    I know the radeon driver is loaded and associated with my card as:
    $ lspci -k
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1853
    Kernel driver in use: i915
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 6827 (rev ff)
    Kernel driver in use: radeon
    I'm not even sure of what log to look in to narrow down the problem.
    NOTE:  This seems to be related to this post.  That problem was at boot time and mine was not, though.  In addition, no one replied to that post, so I thought I might make a new one.

    https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37528
    I am not 100% sure, but I think that is the answer to your question.  Not very satisfying, but I have the same problem.  It's impossible to get it working.
    Maybe Wayland will solve the issue, someday... when we've already bought new laptops... which by that time won't be supported by Wayland. ;-)
