Odd TextEdit file pops up after rebooting
Why did this text file open in text edit upon reboot? The title is iMovieToGarageBandWorkflow. I've never seen it before and when I spotlight search for the file it is not even found. I google that file name and nothing comes up either. I have not installed anything recently. I did just remove a few random applications I hadn't used in a long time, rebooted, repaired permissions, rebooted, ran a backup image to an external with CCC, booted from the backup and THEN this file came up. I then booted from the local drive and not surprisingly, this file popped up again. Seems really odd. Any thoughts what it is or where is came from?
I included both a screenshot and the entire text below.

On the Mac, one thing that many folks don't know about is:
command-clicking on the document icon in the document's titlebar will display the path to the file. (This also works in Finder windows)
This will show you exactly where that file is on your hard drive. You can click on the file's enclosing folder in the pop-up to open it.
Also, there are possibly THREE Startupitems folders on your Mac:
YourHomeFolder/Library/Startupitems/
Macintosh HD/Library/Startupitems/
Macintosh HD/System/Library/Startupitems/
Anything in any of these folders will launch at system startup.

[SOLVED] Permission for a file is changing after reboot
I know it may seem to you like a silly question, but it's a terrible problem for me. I tried to change permission for a file using chmod 660 and it changed of course ( I did it as a root ), but after reboot it resumed to the previous state. It's rather critical file form /proc/acpi/video/... and I need it for brightness manipulation. It's a file with a direct access to my hardware, so I think there's somewhere protection mechanism in Arch and I don't know what should I change.
Thanks in advance
Last edited by Gooru (2010-10-25 17:43:03)Although this works, surely changing the permissions on every boot is a little backwards.
As far as I'm aware it's permissions are set like that for a reason - it's a hardware control and as such should only be touched with privileged permissions (root). The 'real' way to do this would probably be to use sudo and set up the sudoers file such that you don't need to use a password as a regular user.
That's just my two cents though... and if I'm honest, it's just me being really pedantic you can do it how you like! -
I purchased Adobe XI for a year. I am charged monthly on my credit card. The software only allows one print file to pdf after that it has a pop up marketing screen asking me to purchase it again. If I reboot I can get another print out of it. After an hour of trying to reach somone on tech support I ran across this forum. Any help out there?
In the pop-up screen, have you tried licensing it and signing in? Signing in is crucial, so it knows what you paid for.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple. Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help. Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1. File Sharing is set up on both. If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart. Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row. File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem. Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either. No problem there. Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
Why? Any ideas?Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac. NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored. Real bummer. -
Problem with swap files after reboot.
Hello
I have installed Solaris 10 10/09 s10x_u8wos_08a on a Sun Fire X4140.
The file system is UFS.
I wish to add more swap space
I have created these two files under /export/home:
-rw------T 1 root root 5368709120 Jun 16 10:12 newswap
-rw------T 1 root root 2147483648 Jun 16 10:38 newswap2
When I enter swap -a /export/home/newswap, the command succeeds and I can see the additional swapspace with swap -l.
I have the following configuration in /etc/vfstab
# cat /etc/vfstab
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
fd - /dev/fd fd - no -
/proc - /proc proc - no -
/dev/dsk/c1t5d0s1 - - swap - no -
/dev/dsk/c1t5d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t5d0s0 / ufs 1 no -
/dev/dsk/c1t5d0s7 /dev/rdsk/c1t5d0s7 /export/home ufs 2 yes -
/export/home/newswap - - swap - no -
/export/home/newswap2 - - swap - no -
/devices - /devices devfs - no -
sharefs - /etc/dfs/sharetab sharefs - no -
ctfs - /system/contract ctfs - no -
objfs - /system/object objfs - no -
swap - /tmp tmpfs - yes -
Although it is supposed to work, after reboot, the only mounted swap file is /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s1.
The two file under /export/home aren't mounted as swap. Why?
Can anybody give me some help on this issue?
ThanksActually you don't have to create a dedicated slice/filesystem for swap.
You can create files and then use them as swap.
Here is the link from the documentation of Solaris
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/fsswap-59089?a=view
My issue is that although I have configured /etc/vfstab according to the documentation, the swap files aren't automatically mounted on boot. I can only mount them as swap manually with swap -a.
Can anybody help? -
The password file is getting corrupted after rebooting the standby database
Hi,
The password file is getting corrupted after rebooting the standby database.
Since the databases are not in sync, I had to copy the pwfile from primary to standby to make 'em sync.
(BUT.... the pwfile is not getting corrupted every time I reboot the standby by)
Could somebody please explain the reason for the pwfile on the standby database getting corrupted while rebooting ?

We have file server, which is using windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, Service Pack 2. Today suddently no one can access its file share. I try to login to the server and open services, but it is so slow to respond. I have to reboot the machine. After the
server reboot, it is back normal. Any one know why?
Here are the system errors shown before the machine rebooted. First question, I am not sure which error really causes the problem. The machine is set to use WSUS to get windows update. On the automatic updates, it is set to "Download updates
for me, but let me choose when to install them." Second question, why the machine is still trying to install update without permission? Please help. Thanks.

As you mentioned, users suddenly cannot access file share, the issue most likely caused by third party software, such as antivirus software. Please refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

For your second question, you can Configure Automatic Updates group policy and choose
Auto download and notify for install. This option automatically begins downloading updates and then notifies a logged-on administrative user prior to installing the updates

The dock crashes +/-5 minutes after reboot
As of yesterday, the dock simply crashes +/- 5 minutes after reboot.
I've been running SL successfully since the day it came out, without any problems.
I did upgrade an application, DockStar and feel that's the culprit here, although I have been running a demo version of it successfully.
If I go to system preferences and choose Dock it takes a while before the dock pane shows up and with default settings, and it also acts very slowly when changing settings. If I change the settings and then close the system preferences and then reopens it then my settings have disappeared.
And the bigger problem is that the Dock can not be seen (and it is not hidden at any of the monitor edges either).
How I can restore the dock?Kenichi Watanabe wrote:
Did you try moving the Mail preferences file to the Desktop (when Mail is NOT running), so that a new one gets created (by the Snow Leopard version of Mail.app)? That preference files is here
<user home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
I just did it myself, and it did not change anything related to your accounts or what's in your Inbox, but the Mail windows size went to the default size and look. It did says say my "Outbox" has been renamed "Delivered," which is odd because it did not do that before when using Mail in Snow Leopard. If you drag the preference file to the Desktop instead of trashing it, you can put it back if something important is changed in Mail that you want back.
I just tried moving the Mail preferences file to the Desktop (I also got that odd Outbox/Delivered message), and the Dock indeed doesn't crash now.
BUT, I did loose all my accounts, so I had to drag the original preference file back.
Some extra info: The clean generated com.apple.mail.plist is only 8KB, while mine is 45KB.
Another fact: I only started using Mail for the first time after the Snow Leopard upgrade (because I'm an Exchange user), it's not that this has been an upgraded Mail with old accounts or settings in it. -
Weird pop sound after upgrading ram and harddrive
I randomly got the pop sound after I upgraded my mac mini core 2 duo to 320 gb 5400 rpm harddrive and 4 GB ram (2GBx2GB).
The sound is like a plastic click (similar sound when I the wireless mice hit the aluminum wireless keyboard) and it's quite loud.
Everything works fine except the pop sound ,Im a bit worried.
First I thought it was the hard drive problem so I copied the 3 GB music from the CD to the newly 320 GB internal HD with no problem at all ,no pop sound or click sound.
Do you have any idea where the sound come from?
Please helpI will try to swap the 80Gb back .
If the clicking sound disappear then it's the HD.
No, that's not the best way to test it. Leaving the new drive in the system, try and copy a large file to or from it. What that will do is keep the drive busy for the duration of the file copy, and let you listen for the noise. If the noise continues while the copy is taking place, and particularly if it increases in frequency, it would suggest a problem with the drive that is not a simple matter of self-parking - in other words, would be suggestive of a faulty drive that you would likely be best not to trust at all (in fact return it).
If the sound disappears while the copy takes place, then it suggests the noise is the self-parking activity, in which case as much as the noise is odd and even disturbing, it wouldn't suggest a fault or any real indication of imminent failure.
It should be said that many drives used in early minis made the most alarming sounds, yet are still in regular use with no unusual failure rate. Indeed, one of the manufacturers concerned (Seagate) indicated at one point that over time the sounds would change and grow less prolific, which in my experienced turned out to be the case. In your situation therefore, I'd continue to use the drive, ensuring I had an adequate backup routine of course, and see what happens! -
CF10 App server running after reboot; but website unavailable until service restart
Hello, everyone.
I recently returned to a job I previously had after several months at a different job. Upon my return, I inherited someone else's dev system (my previous dev system, apparently, had been reimaged and given to someone else, after I left.)
This system originally had CF9 server on it (the ColdFusion9 folder is still here) and now has CF10. Using the built-in web server (no IIS, no Apache.)
Every time I boot/reboot the system, I can see in Computer Manage System that CF10 Application Server is, indeed, running. But if I try to open any of the pages that I am working on, I get an error message that the site can't be found.
I go into Computer Manage System, go to Services, right-click the CF10 Application Server, choose "Restart", wait for it to finish, and voila!, I can get a working page.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and/or how to remedy it so that CF will work immediately after boot/reboot without going to restart the service?
Thank you,Good to hear you solved it. If you may still want to know exactly why that was causing an issue, I would propose something I didn’t yet see anyone else do: look specifically at the CF log called coldfusion-out.log. That is basically the “console log” when you run CF as a service, and it would be interesting to know what was in that log if you compared the startup messages in your working and failing examples.
The log tracks info generally for days if not weeks or months (depending on what else is logged in the file and how quickly it fills), but it may well give you insight into what was up. I’m not saying there WILL be something there. As Anit said, what you experienced was odd, but if there will be something logged anywhere about this, it may be there.
If nothing else, I leave this here for anyone else who has a similar sort of problem in the future.
/charlie

Autostart video after rebooting
Hello,
could somebody help me?
I need the following:
after rebooting a video should play automaticly in fullscreen and looping ( backward/forward ).
is this possible with Quicktime or any other programm?
best regards
thomasYou can do it without having QuickTime Pro by making a QuickTime Media Link file.
Open TextEdit and copy the text below and paste:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<?quicktime type="application/x-quicktime-media-link"?>
<embed
autoplay="true"
controller="false"
fullscreen="full"
loop="true"
src="blah.mov"
/>
Edit the "blah.mov" source to point to your actual file and then Save As in TextEdit but append the .qtl file extension (not .txt).
Move this blah.qtl file to the same folder or directory that holds the source file.
Open System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and press the + button. Navigate to the new blah.qtl file to make it a start up item. Or do it by dragging to the Dock and making it "Open at login".
QuickTime no longer supports "palindrome" mode (forward/backward lopping) so your file will only loop at boot. -
After rebooting bookmarks are deleted
after rebooting bookmarks are deleted
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
☞ Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
☞ In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
☞ What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above. -
Lion takes 15 seconds to log in after reboot on Macbook Pro 13" (early 2011)
I have been having sluggish performance (repeated beachballs, etc.) on my Macbook Pro 13-inch (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM), which I bought this summer pre-installed with Lion.
I didn't migrate my old system, I just installed everything on my new machine. After about 9 years of OS X upgrades on various machines, I decided to start fresh and just installed my applications and transferred the data manually. It took some time, but I wanted it lean and clean.
Within weeks though, things were starting to slow down. This morning, it took over 15 seconds after reboot before I could even log in to my user account (I clicked on the icon for my account, and after 4-5 seconds it beachballed for 10 seconds before the field for the password "slid" into place).
I've tried checking and unchecking having Lion restore my previous session before rebooting; closing all applications before restarting; not closing applications before restarting. But consistently, right after logging in for several minutes, and then after several hours of use (and/or the next day, if I put my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down) opening, saving documents, viewing mailboxes after opening Mail, or even viewing folder contents in the Finder can take from several to 30+ seconds.
Here is the log from my most recent boot. I have Dropbox, LogMeIn, Default Folder, and Growl (the pre-App Store version), and I have Parallels (which I very rarely use), but I don't see why any of these would slow down my machine before I even log in. Besides this, I have pretty standard fair applications. I would very much appreciate any help/advice!

06/12/11 03:05:15,347 Microsoft Outlook: CFURLCreateWithBytes wAfter biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it. -
Error message while installing 10.6.3. And even after reboot I can't do anything anymore same message pops up after a few minutes. How can I get new version installed without error message and it ejecting the Installation Cd? Tried booting from external drive since the one on my Mac is not working. Any tips on how to proceed?
