Odd things showing up on Parallels Desktop

I have the new intel iMac 2009 with Parallels and Windows XP. I've noticed lately that an icon titled "Windows XP" has shown up on the Parallels desktop. It is not an alias, rather the real thing (or so it seems). Can anyone tell me why it would be there and does it really need to stay there? It even has a generic format, since clearly the desktop didn't "know" what program it was.
Is it a weird Doppelganger of the proper Windows XP icon on the Mac OS Desktop?
Makes me think so, since in Windows I created two aliases to websites and now they're showing up on the MacOS Desktop, with generic-looking icons and the two parallel red lines.
Does all of this really need to be displayed? Would love to be able to suppress that stuff and just access it directly once I get over to the proper operating system.

Please post questions regarding Parallels on Parallels's own forums since this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and not related to Parallels

  • HT3258 Parallels Desktop 7 is showing it's incompatible with the Mountain Lion release. Please Help.

So I upgraded to Mountain Lion for the new features and now my virtualization software Parallels Desktop 7 (Full Retail Version), is showing that it's incompatible with "Mountain Lion", the ironic twist is that on www.Parallels.com it shows that it's compatible. So I don't know what to do. I can try to reinstall PD7, but if it's already incompatabile then there's no sense for re-installation. If anyone knows something that I haven't mentioned please let me know. Thank you.

From the Parallels website you must be running 'Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac build 15104', update is available for download, if you are I suggest an email to Parallels.

I just upgraded my EFI firmware for 2.9 edition. But after done this, the Parallels Desktop 9.0 can't be started with an warning of Unable to load the Parallels driver.  It seems that the virtualization support is disabled on my Mac.But I have done with upgrade. And another odd thing is the upgrade notice is always on App Store software bar even if I have installed it for several times. Who can help me?

After you have the problem with PB, open the Console app and look for log entries associated with PB at the the time you tried and post the results here.

  • Cannot see html pages LOCALLY STORED on Mac drive, using Parallels Desktop?

Using Parallels Desktop running Windows XP, I cannot use Safari 3 to view HTML files stored on my Mac - no matter how I try!
If I locate the file within Windows Explorer and I right-click and choose "Open With > Safari Web Browser" Safari will open, but it will only open a blank window and nothing loads (the Status Bar remains blank).
If I open Safari and choose "Open File..." and navigate to the file on my Mac and click "Open" I get an error message which states:
Safari can’t open the page “file://.PSF/Macintosh%20HD/..."
    etc.
Note that the URL it is trying to open begins with:
    “file://.PSF/"
whereas doing the same thing from within Internet Explorer shows the URL to begin with:
    "\\.PSF\"
without the "file" part. Also notice the BACKslashes, rather than FORWARDslashes.
Lastly, trying to open a blank Safari window and drag-and-drop the HTML file from Windows Explorer directly into the Safari window results in exactly the same problem.
Note that ALL 3 of the above-mentioned methods DO work in Internet Explorer.
Finally, even copying-and-pasting the local URL that DOES work in IE into Safari's Address Bar doesn't work either. The problem this time is that not only does Safari turn all the backslashes into forwardslashes, but it also adds "http:" to the beginning of the URL, when it was not in the originally-copied link, which began with "\\.PSF\".

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply - but you're really really not paying attention to what I'm saying...
I AM giving Safari the full pathname, but when using Parallels Desktop, this full pathname begins with "\\.PSF\". That's how it starts. Nothing else before the two backslashes, OK. That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. That's how it works in Windows Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
I have given Safari the full pathname in FOUR different ways, as I mentioned in my original post: right-click, open with / file>open / drag-and-drop / copy-paste-URL.
With regards to my particular issue, I'm not concerned about how it works when using Windows running natively on a "proper" Windows PC. I am concerned about how it works when using Parallels Desktop.
If you really want to know the full URL (not that it matters one jot) of an example file that I can open with Internet Explorer, but not with Safari, here's the URL of the file I was originally trying to test:
    \\.PSF\Macintosh%20HD\Work\Downie\Website\HTML\index.html
That's it. Everything is there. I have not left off anything at the beginning of that URL.
That's how it works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop. OK, re-read that. It works in Internet Explorer when using Parallels Desktop.
When I copy that URL exactly as it is, and paste it into Safari and hit return, Safari automatically converts it to:
    http://.psf/Macintosh%20HD/Work/Downie/Website/HTML/index.html
Note how it has altered it in several respects:
    - It has added "http:" to the beginning of the URL.
    - It has turned the original "PSF" into a lower-case "psf".
    - It has turned all the backslashes into forwardslashes.
I try manually deleting and altering the relevant parts and hitting return again, but Safari just goes back to the "wrong URL".
When you say "the only prefix for local files is file://" you are obviously not familiar with how Parallels Desktop works with and reads "local files".
Remember what I said earlier about how you're not REALLY looking at LOCAL files, because TRUE local files would be on the Windows section of the drive, and I am trying to look at files on the Mac part of the drive.
I'll repeat what I said earlier:
If you are not testing this from within Parallels Desktop like I am, and where I am having the problems, then your words here are not of much use, because you cannot experience what I am experiencing. You cannot comment on the experience on how this works from within Parallels Desktop if you do not have Parallels Desktop and have not experienced it yourself.

  • How do I get a volume to show up on the desktop?

The big, roomy new disk in my MacBook now has three partitions (startup, and two more) and I can open them and do all the usual stuff from a Finder window. However, what I can't seem to figure out is how to get a disk icon to show up on my desktop so I don't have to go thru the finder window to open it.
This must be the simplest thing in the world, & I have overlooked the obvious, but can someone give the the hint(s) on how to do this? I tried Help, but without knowing what iIwas looking for, that didn't work out.
    Thanks!

  • Problem with Audio card in windows 7 in parallel desktop

I installed windows 7 with Parallels Desktop but I haven't audio in windows 7
What do I do to repair that ?
    thanks a lot

Try installing the Cirrus driver from the BootCamp 4.0.4326 download:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1636
    BootCamp/Drivers/Cirrus
I read various things saying I should install the RealTek driver, but this didn't do me any good.  Two seconds after running the CirrusAudio32.exe, my speakers came to life.  Now Windows is dinging, chirping, and all that.
This is on a MacBook Air A1369.

  • Windows 7 on Boot Camp stuck at black screen with blinking cursor... starts up fine in Parallels desktop

    Hi,
Recently my dad's Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) on his Mac Pro has stopped working. It gets stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've waited at least five minutes and it doesn't do anything, I have to power it off.
However it starts up perfectly fine and intact in Parallels desktop. If I insert the original installation DVD and boot from the Disc that says 'Windows' it will boot into the partition and work fine, unless I press a key to boot from the DVD.
I find both these things to be strange. The partition is backed up, which is fine, but I'd rather not have to re-install it if possible.
I have booted from the DVD and tried to repair the disk. It said it found a problem with something related to startup and that it needed to restart to repair it. I clicked yes, and then held alt/opt and (I think wrongly) booted back into the disc rather than the Windows partition. However it now says that it can't detect any problems.
In the repair my computer section when booting from the DVD, it detects the OS as Windows Vista Business. I followed these steps I found online:
Fixed! Peroblem was I think using OEM, which Bootcamp advise against using... they advise to use retail only. Fixed like this:
    1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
    2. Hold down Option key till all available disks are displayed and select DVD. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
    5. Click Repair your computer.
    6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
    Type (these commands are safe)
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
    Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
    *Press ENTER after each command.*
    *Restart your computer.*
    Done. Rockin'
FixMbr was successful, as was FixBoot. However RebuildBcd reported that it found no Windows installations.
Does anyone know what could be wrong here? I should note that recently I removed the drive Windows 7 is installed on and put it back in. Also Windows Updates probably have been done by my dad. Not sure if they could be the problem.

  • External USB HD doesn't show up on the desktop

I have an iMac G5 with 10.4.10 installed on it
Last week after the update to 10.4.10 my LaCie usb conected hard drive still showed up on my desktop but after a second restart it disapeared and never came back.
If I connect my external HD with a windows computer (with macdrive software) I can see and open my files. (I concluded that my drive still works propperly)
If I connect my drive nothing shows up on my desktop but, there is a change in my /volumes map (I have an map action connected to an automator script if some thing changes overthere). When I connect my HD I can see an automator action is going on ...
And if I put the power of from my usb drive I get an warning that a drive was unmounted "unpropperly" (the warning when you plug a usb out without draging it to the trash).
I have al ready tried :
*Putting my mac on and of again, didn't work
*Putting my HD on and of agian, didn't work
*Opened disk utility and checked my external drive, disk utility can see my external drive but it showed no errors when checking.
*checked my Finder preferences, removeble media should show up on my desktop
*Opening usb prober; overthere I can see that my external HD is connected, but my HD would show up magicly on the desktop like some other lucky people on the internet.
*Rebuilding my directory with diskwarrior, didn't work (diskwarrior did saw my drive and said it did show up on my desktop
*Restoring IOUSB...keys from the combo 10.4.9 updater, didn't work
*Reinstaling 10.4.0, my drive didn't show up either, updated everything back to 10.4.10, won't show up.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do to get my drive up and runing again on my iMac?
BTW; English is not my native language, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello, I'm having the exact same problem as Cheburashka, actually it started happening almost as the same time (jul 23). I just switched from being a PC user to a Mac user, so I don't know much about OSX yet. Cheburashka mentioned he made an update, I also made a sofware update, maybe it has something to do? Also my desktop stopped showing my external usb HD
and any other USB flash memory I plug into any usb hubs. but when I tried them on a pc, they worked perfectly, so I also discarded a possible error on my usb device, I tried my usb joystick and the keyboard on my G5's usb hubs and they work perfectly so is not a hardware problem either. I'm about to try that invisible-hd fix right now but I'm a little worried cause I've never used it, seems like a big deal, anyway I'll keep up with any progress you guys make, thanx.

  • Using Apple Magic Mouse With Windows 7 64 bit and Parallels Desktop 8 questions

I will be getting an iMac in the coming months and installing Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 64 bit.
I was wondering if I would have the functions of been able to left click, right click, scroll (preferably vertically but also occasionally horizontally) with the Apple Magic Mouse when I'm running Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop 8?
I just wondered if anyone has installed Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7 and have you been able to do what i mentioned above and also have you come across any other issues, problems whilst using the Apple Magic Mouse on the Windows side?
If there is any problems/issues with doing the above, is there anything I will need to do to get the above functionality to work?
    Thanks in advance.

    The same with the trackpad!
Sometimes scrolling is a bit too fast, becuase Win 7 isn't made to use with the Magicmouse or trackpad.
The only thing i miss / doesn't work ist the middle mouse button!
Thanks very much for the help stz-42 its much appreciated.
Providing I can left click, right click, scroll, then that's OK for me as I will be spending the vast amount of my time on the Mac side.
Are you able to scroll both horizontally and vertically when using Parallels 8 Win 7 64 bit on your iMac?

  • How to reinstall owned adobe acrobat 7? I have it on Parallels Desktop, but accidentally unstall on Mac :(

At first got some printing problems, I fixed them, but cannot print or find the pdf icon on printer drives.  Stupidly, I accidentally uninstall the Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional thinking i can reinstall back just like the printer drives, but then find out the disk I own show 'Windows'.  I have Parallels Desktop and this Acrobat 7 is working fine on Windows side, but I seldom open Windows, and I really really need pdf files on my Mac.  I have spend days and hours trying to find out how to reinstall or map the application back on Mac.  Please anyone can teach me how?  I even contacted Adobe Acrobat, not quite friendly.  Thanks a lot.

I only have the Windows version, i never have the Mac version, forgot how I can use it on Mac for the past years. I bought the Parallels years ago along with this Mac and limited to computer knowledge. I see 'Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional' on Mac application, thread ' 'X' Acrobat Uninstaller.app'  What does it mean, can it be recovered?

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • I keep taking screen shots but they dont show up on my desktop and i dont know how to find them

    helppp
i keep talking screen shots but they dont show up on my desktop and i dont know how to find them!

I have the same problem. One of the reliable things about Apple OSX, that we could count on screenshots being simple. Then DropBox came along. I suspect DropBox is the culprit here. I don't mind, even am grateful if DB captures my captures, but who gave them permission to totally changes my whole universe!!?

  • Problem with Java in Parallels Desktop...what do you think?

    Hi folks...
2 days ago,i bought a Macbook pro 13" and i've installed Parallels Desktop for working on(Windows XP service pack3)...
i guess the problem is Java..
i use Business Objects XI program....(a tool for reporting....)
To works,it's needs java 1.4.2_04 version... i've installed it on parallels...but something is wrong...
sometimes the monitor turn off, and turn on... sometimes all mac goes in lock... and i have to push the power button to shut down.
Is possible there is some conflict about java 1.4.2_04 version on the virtual machine and the java 1.6 on the MAC OS?
    many thanks!!!!

    Many thanks ds store!!!
i saw a lot of people to read this post.....
i resolved it in this way...
i tried to dowloading another kind of Virtual machine... (VirtualBox made by Oracle and it's free!!!! )
i installed Business objects on it...and it's works correctly...
i compared both virtual machines Parallels (90 Euro) and VirtualBox (free)
and there were 2 different things...
1: in Parallels there was video memory at 256 Mb, and i change it in 128 (like in virtual box)
2: (i think the real motivation)
in Parallels there was a flag on "3D acceleration", and a flag on "Vertical synchronization"
i de-flagget it!!!!! and now Parallels works!!!!!
maybe this one could be useful to someone!!!
    anyway...manythanks!!!!
PS. the MAC world's is AMAZING!!!!!!!

After updating to OS X Maverics, I began to have problems with Parallels Desktop 9.  After several re-installs of Parallels, I asked for Parallels Customer support.
