Odd trackpad behavior, opens Command+ F in any program.
I have an odd behavior on my Mac that's starting to get pretty annoying.
I have a late 2009 model. If I am in say Safari, and I wiggle my finger near the bottom of the track pad, (wiggling up and down on the bottom center edge of the trackpad) it opens up the search bar for Safari.
Basically Command+F.
If I am on the desktop (Finder) and do the same action it opens Command+ F once again, this time just in Finder.
In iTunes, the same motion on the trackpad puts me in full screen, which is, you guess it. Command+ F.
I have tried to get rid of this behavior by terminal commands killall Finder, killall Dock, and also by moving the user/library/preferences folder contents to the desktop, so that programs rewrite their preferences, but everything still has the same behavior.
Any ideas?

Never heard of anything like it, frankly. Run the Apple Hardware Test you'll find on one of the DVDs that came with your MBP, and make an exact note of any errors it reports. Then make a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple Store and demonstrate the problem to the Genius. Also show the Genius the text of the error report (if there was one).

PSE 5 Error "could not complete the open command because of a program error"
I have been using PSE 5 for years but all of a sudden when I try to open multiple files "could not complete the open command because of a program error" appears. I have reformatted my computer and reinstalled all programs & updates but still get the error. I am trying to access photo files in a specific, user created, directory on my computer; the funny thing is that if I access files in the My Documents\My pictures\ Sample pictures folder I am able to open all the files. Any and all help or suggestions are welcome. Thanks
When you choose liquify command it says "Could not complete the Liquify command because of a disk error." so nothing at all happens other than the error message
There is plenty of room on my scratch disks --lots of it
Tried using a smaller selection using Marquee Tool to outline a smaller area near where I want to Liquify. makes no difference. tried a small file as well. no ability to use liquify.
This is really weird.
keep probing the depths of your mac ideas, as I am going a bit nuts with this, friends -
I have a MacBook Pro i7, early 2011, Lion 10.7.2. An oddity has started, and it seems it is only on eBay pages when I try to click on "Watch This Item." I've had the MBP for a while, so it has to be something recently done to the system. If I Control-Click on the area, or hover over it, the place to click is a Javascript not a hyperlink. After frustration, I started saving the pages I wanted to watch then use my iPad later to click on the "Watch" button. So far this is the only site I've experienced this. I've also tried Chrome and FireFox and the same inaction from clicking on the "Watch" button.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any suggestions...
TomWhatever the issue was, the eBay site is now responding when I click on the "Watch This Item" button. I guess I should have written to eBay, but have you ever tried to send an e-mail to them - if possible I couldn't find a link. But the good news is that it had nothing to do with my system. It is still odd though, during that time, my iPad or iPhone could click on those eBay buttons. Oh well...

Noticable "Preview" lag when opening a document in any program
Since upgrading to Mavericks I have noticed a very log lag between the time I navigate to a folder and the time any documents in that folder are regocnized by the finder. eg: If I am using any application and I go to the file menu File>Open and navigate to a folder in my Documents folder (or any folder for that matter) the preview in any view mode: icon, list, columns or coverflow show the folder as empty. I can see a spinning clock in the lower left corner of the open dialog box but there are times is take as long as a minute for any of the documents to appear. If I close the open dialog and reopen the correct folder contents will show up.
I have booted using the recovery disk partition and run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, checked directories and hard drive with Alsoft Disc Warrior and it still persists. Booting into Mountain Lion from my external LIghtning drive does not exibit the same issue. Anyone run into this issue and/or found a fix?
Thanks,
WillCan you post a screenshot of your entire Photoshop screen with a file loaded in and the layers panel showing?
It helps if we see the same problem you are seeing

How do I know if a file is open (being used) by any program?
I'm trying to write a program that will log file usage. For example, it will log when a file (or program) begins to be used (or opened), and then log when it is closed.
So what I'm looking for is a method / algorithm that will tell me if a file is currently open (or if an executable fileis currently open, in the case of a program). If you mean the ability to do this system wide (and not just in your app) then you would need to use JNI and a HOOK function (assuming this is windows you are talking about). I am sure there are similar hooks in UNIX/LINUX.

Hi
I created my website using iWeb, and use iWeb SEO Tool (3rd party software) to upload onto the internet so that my website can be found on the net.
But since upgrading to Lion OSX I can't open my iWeb file in iWeb SEO - my Library file has been moved and my iWeb file has disappeared!! I have since found the iWeb file through Finder (by using Go to ~/Library/) but still cannot find it using iWeb SEO so can't upload changes to my website.
Can someone help please? It is very frustrating!
Many thanks in advance!
Have you checked to see if iWeb SEO is compatable with Lion or if there is an update for it? Apple have dropped iWeb from their iLife suite in Lion. It will continue to work, but uploading to MobileMe will cease very shortly.

Where are the settings for the "open" command, located at /usr/bin/open?
I have Windows XP installed on a partition on my Macbook and I use Parallels to access some of the Windows applications.
When I am in Mac OS X, and I don't even have a virtual machine running, if I enter the following command in the terminal, I get some really strange behavior:
/usr/bin/open -a firefox http://localhost/~myname/somewebpage.html
The open command will launch firefox within Mac OS X and display the page, but, it WILL ALSO TRY TO LAUNCH FIREFOX VIA PARALLELS. So, it starts a Parallels session and tries to launch Firefox. I see the Firefox icon in my dock twice, once normally, and once with the Parallels version of the Firefox icon. But, I cannot view the Parallels instance of Firefox.
In order to debug this, I removed Firefox from Mac OS X (deleted Firefox.app from my applications folder) and I un-installed it from the windows partition using Add/Remove programs in windows.
Now, running the open command as stated above launches Safari in Mac OS X and it still launches parrallels.
Where is the list of application associations that the "open" command uses? I assume there is some incorrect associate that is causing this but, I have no idea how to find it.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.Thank you for your reply.
I actually checked out the man page for "open" but, I was unable to find LaunchServices in the finder. I was hoping there would be some sort of manifest, or application map, within LaunchServices that might be the source of my problem.
Regarding using the full path: Good suggestion. That will clear it up when I use the command line, or if I were writing my own app, etc...unfortunately, I became aware of this problem because Netbeans is using the command in the abbreviated form I posted above (to launch web applications I am debugging), and I can't edit it.
I removed Firefox from both Windows and Mac OS X on my machine, and tested the Netbeans functionality, it launched my application in Safari with no errors. I reinstalled Firefox on my Mac OS X partition and selected it in Netbeans preferences as the browser to use when debugging an app. When I tried to debug an application in Netbeans again, I got the same behavior...parallels launched. Ugh.
There was a folder, on the Windows side of things, called something like Parallels\Shared Applications. It had a shortcut to Firefox in it but, I removed that before doing my testing. I was hoping there would be something similar on the Mac OS X side but, I haven't been able to find anything.
Thank you both for your help. I think I might need to visit the Parallels forums for this one. -
Program error when opening or saving. Any fixes or workarounds?
I've been having troubles with opening and saving files in Photoshop CC since upgrading to Yosemite. The problem usually occurs when the save or open command is part of an action. I have the latest updates of both photoshop and Yosemite. It sounds like it's a known bug but I'd really like a solution or a workaround. Any suggestions?
Any other suggestions? As I stated in my original post, I have the most updated version of both photoshop and Yosemite. It was the first thing I checked.

hello, I can see the Icon of my external hard on the mac os x 10.6.8 but I can not open it or view any file in the external hard
your prompt reply will be appreciated
thanksReinstall 10.6 again, but this time hold c boot off the 10.6 and erase the ENTIRE internal drive.
You do this by selecting the drive makers name and size on the left hand side, not the slightly indented partition underneath it.
If you erase and install 10.6 only into a parittion, say Macintosh HD, the you still have the hidden Lion Recovery Partition on the drive and it appears you already have 10.7
In the MAS, hold option and click Purchases to redownload Lion
FYI, you don't need to install 10.6 to reinstall 10.7, 10.7 can be reinstalled via the Lion Recovery, Command r boot.

After change to Mavericks my Mac become too slow e I can't use it because stays asking passwords for "talagent" and "messages agent" as icloud keys. I got changed the icloud password many times and still doesn't work. I can't open any program.
Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access. -
When I try to open a folder from Terminal using the open command, instead of a Finder window opening for the folder, another Terminal window opens up with contents like the following:
*Last login: Sat Nov 14 16:14:45 on ttys001*
*jt-imac:~ terrator$ /Users/terrator/Music ; exit;*
*-bash: /Users/terrator/Music: is a directory*
logout
*\[Process completed\]*
In addition, I get the same symptom when I try to open folders from the Dock and Spotlight so I think the problems are related.
I have done the following in trying to resolve this problem:
1. Repair permissions and repair disk with Disk Utility using the Installation DVD after booting from it.
2. Repair LaunchServices using Onyx
3. Created a test user to see if this user has the same problem. No, the problem doesn't happen in this user.
4. Deleted the com.appl.terminal.plist and some other plist files.
5. Reinstalled Snow Leopard on top of my existing installation.
None of those attempts have resolved the problem.
Anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this problem? For Terminal.app I don't see anything with name "Folder" but I see one with roles "Editor":
The Terminal does not execute anything. It is a character terminal emulator that is connected to pseudo (fake) serial terminal device (/dev/pty**)
The other side of that pty device is attached to an independent process that happens to be running a shell of some kind (default being the bash shell).
The shell will create child processes on demand and run commands requested by the user. Any text send to standard out or standard error by the shell or any of the children processes started by the shell, will be sent to the pty and the Terminal will read the other side of the pty and display the text in the Terminal window.
The Terminal will also listen to the keyboard, and send any text you type to the pty where the shell or a child process created by the shell will read the other side of the pty and do what you tell it via the keyboard.
That is the Terminal's job. communicate through this fake serial device. It does not execute commands. I knows nothing about Folders, nor files, nor TYPE/CREATOR fields, nor file type suffixes. Just reads text you type, and displays text sent back from the shell or its child processes. -

You cannot upgrade from v6 to v7 without purchasing iLife 08.
Can you give more details about your crashing issue. Make of camera etc.,
You can start with the troubleshooting basics:
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts), create an iPhoto library there and see if the problem is repeated. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

No Thumbnails on "Open" Command in Editor
I've been using Photoshop Elements 10 since early August and it's been working well.
However, since yesterday, when I use the File/Open command in Edit to get a new picture, I no longer see thumbnails, just a graphic of an orange flower. The pictures (mainly JPEG with some RAW/NEF) still open fine and if I single click one of the orange flowers I get a preview at the bottom of the Open screen. However, this is far from convenient. FYI, I usually work set to "large icons" but I've tried all the different size settings.
FYI, I've recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and reinstalled PSE10. However, all was working fine immediately after the change of computer and the lack of thumbnails has only just started.
Any thoughts? In view of the crickets in here, I've found my own solution.
Under Control Panel/Folder Options/View there's a tick box saying "Always display icons, never thumbnails". I've no idea how it got ticked but unticking it fixed my problems.
Hope this helps somebody in the future. -
Terminal "open" command misbehaving
In Terminal, when I use the "open" command on any folder, I expect that folder to open in the Finder. For example, "open /Applications" should open the Applications folder in the Finder.
This does not happen for me. Instead, iTunes opens and starts to import any music files it can find in the folder I specified. This does not happen when I double-click on a folder in the Finder.
I have rebuilt the LaunchServices database (using Yasu) but that didn't help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.(highland_park:~)$ which open
/usr/bin/open
When I double-click Applications (or any other folder) in the Finder, the folder opens normally. (This is with View->As Icons selected.)
I have nothing in ~/LIbrary/Workflows.
I just discovered that if I put any folder in the dock, right-click on it, and select "Open [folder name]", then it opens in iTunes. (Does this just trigger the open command?)
I'm enjoying poking around, and I very much appreciate all the suggestions. -
Spinning rainbow wheel for long periods on File Open commands in Acrobat and Office 365 programs
Hardware & Software:
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009)
77GB of free hard disk space
8GB RAM
Running OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.2)
Over the last few days, when I try to execute a File Open command from Adobe Acrobat or Office 365 programs (even from an innocuous location such as Documents), I get the spinning rainbow wheel for long periods of time (10 seconds to minutes) before I am able to select a file to open. I copied messages from Console after a File Open command for each of Adobe Acrobat and Excel (the selected location was Documents), given below:

Can anyone give me an idea of what these messages mean and how I can solve this problem?
If I'm not in the correct Community for this question, could someone kindly tell me where I should re-post?
Thanks.
David WalkerYes; I have previously connected to an iMac at this location using File Sharing. However, in my attempts to solve this problem last week, I had already unchecked File Sharing in System Preferences. Tonight, I also deleted the folder from the window in the File Sharing System Preferences page, then rebooted. The problem still persists.
I try not open files across a server line, i.e., I try always to copy a file to the local computer and open it there. I may have gotten careless and tried to open a file from the Windows server with either or both Acrobat and Office 365. Although this was an SMB share, is it possible that these programs are now trying to connect to the Windows server on a File Open?
I had about decided to quit chasing this problem; we spend about two weeks every two months at this Boston location, and I'll be returning to my Florida home this weekend. So I decided I would see what the situation was when I returned to my native habitat, although I may be chasing this problem again in our trip to the Boston area in April.
The other thing I wondered (I guess I can't quite let it go), is whether there is a command line in Terminal that would kill all AFP shares.
In any case, thanks for your help; you're very knowledgeable.
