Oddest of problems on MacBook 2.4GHz Core2Duo (2008)

Hello everyone,
Its been a while here, and I lost access to my earlier email address so created a new account.
Anyway, here's a very very odd problem:
Computer: MacBook 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 150GB HDD, 2GB RAM, year of manufacture: 2008
Problem: On starting up, computer "stuck" in blue screen after the apple logo, it stays there for about 6-7 minutes, computer appears unresponsive. Actually the screen on the MB is only stuck, connected the computer through Remote Desktop and the computer is actually working, does everything remotely, only the computer itself doesn't work!
Tried host of things, changed RAM, reinstalled and reinstalled System tried 10.5 and 10.6, booted up with external HDDs, nothing.
After the most recent install, the desktop comes, but again the computer is not responsive, works fine through remote connection!!!
I am at my wits end!!! First such issue I have seen in 12+ years!!!
Any help will be greatly appreciated and reciprocated with one case of beer, or a bottle (up to $50) French Wine, when we meet! :-)

Have you tried booting from your install disc and running Disk Utility?
The startup disk may need repairing.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.
    Ciao.

  • What kind of hdd can I put into my macbook 2.4ghz from 2008?

As the title of the topic says. I'm thinking about upgrading my
hard drive from 160gb to a bigger one. Can I use a 7200 rpm type
of hard drive or what limitations should I look for?
    Thanks in advance!

If it's the white 2008 model 4,1 you need a SATA hard drive that's 9.5mm in height. If it's the Aluminum Unibody model 5,1 then you can use a SATA 12.5mm high hard drive. That's the only limitation on hard drives.
    For a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE

  • Problem with MacBook and TimeCapsule (with Workaround)

    Hi,
thought it might be helpful to post my recent experience with my new MacBook (2,4GHz) and my *Time Capsule*.
I am using the Time Capsule as my main WLAN router and for backup. Reproducible, the MacBook (with OSX 10.5.6, all Airport updates applied; TimeCapsule with most recent firmware update 4.7.1) corrupts the TimeCapsule connection when waking up from sleep. Whenever the MacBook wakes up from sleep, it tries to (re-) connect to my wireless network. The airport sign in the menu bar changes from light grey bars to dark bars and the connection time counter appears next to it; but just a second later the counter disappears again, although the Airport signal bars are staying black. The result is that there's no wireless connectivity anymore; even the Airport admin software cannot find the TimeCapsule anymore. Furthermore, all other Macs (I have an additional iMac) loose there connections as well. Only thing that helps here is to restart the TimeCapsule (by disconnecting the power cord). After that, both MacBook and iMac can access the TimeCapsule again and everything works as normal.
This whole scenario can completely be reproduced and only happens when the MacBook tries to (re-) establish its Internet connection after wake-up from sleep. When I shut down the MacBook and boot normally, the MacBook connects without any problems.
After several hours of finding a solution, I've called Apple Support - and they told me that this is a *known bug*, but they currently have *no solution* for it. According to the Apple Support guy, I was not the first to report this problem (which was somehow a relief, but on the other hand a surprise as I haven't found similar problem descriptions on Mac forums yet), but they couldn't tell when and how the problem will be fixed. (Of course, they also recommended applying the most recent software updates (which I had) and resetting PRAM (which I did) - without any success.)
As now I got the impression that this is a bug with the current Late 2008 MacBook (it has a Broadcom BCM43xx based Airport Extreme Card) which I cannot solve myself, I looked at least for a workaround. I realised that this error doesn't occur when I turn Airport off before sending the MacBook to sleep, and activating it some safe time after waking up again. With the great resources at macosxhints.com, I found a small program called "Sleepwatcher" and a scripting addition called "XNetwork". Sleepwatcher runs as a demon in the background and can execute small tasks before a Mac goes to sleep and after it wakes up. XNetwork allows you to turn on and off Airport from within AppleScript (or the OpenScript Architecture). Now I use Sleepwatcher to turn off Airport just before my MacBook goes to sleep, and use it as well to (re-) activate Airport with a safe delay of 10 seconds after my MacBook wakes up again.
As of now, this works just fine (and as it should right out of the box...) - so I can wait more relaxed until Apple comes up with a real solution for this problem!
Sorry, this has become quite a long post - but maybe it is helpful for anyone.
    Cheers,
    Mark

I believe this was the problem I was experiencing at first, but it is now worse!
TC works fine EXCEPT for the AirPort feature when also using AirPort on my MacBook (late 2008, Unibody).
At first it seemed random, but I can now reproduce the problem at will. The TC stops working and the light goes solid amber or even no light at all sometimes.
    The scenario is the following:
TC works fine, I have an iBook G4 connected via ethernet and can surf the web; iPod touch (1st gen) can surf the web as well; everyone's happy. Turn on the MacBook with AirPort on, TC stops working; light goes amber or sometimes stays solid green (I configured it to flash on activity) or completely off. iBook and iPod can't surf the web. AirPort Utility does not even see the TC (hit Rescan many times, no luck). Restart TC by unplugging, waiting 20 seconds or so, plug it back, light is solid amber; AirPort Utility still does not see the TC. Repeat this a few times, waiting in between, no success. Turn off AirPort on the MacBook, unplug and plug the TC, it is now working in less than 30 seconds. iBook and iPod can surf the web; connect the MacBook via ethernet to the TC, everyone is still happy. Turn on AirPort on the MacBook, TC stops working. You get the picture. It has been 2 days now where I can reproduce this constantly.
I have an AirPort Express that I use to stream music, which extends the TC. My DSL modem/router is in bridge mode where the TC connects via PPPoE. My configuration has been the same for almost 2 years problem free. I reset the modem too but the above scenario still applies.
I did a hard reset of the TC by holding the reset button at the back until the light flashed amber rapidly. I re-entered all the configuration again, but still no luck.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7, no luck. The firmware on the TC is 7.4.1 (74100.25). The AirPort card on the MacBook is listed as Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.35)
I set the log level to debug on the time capsule and entered the IP address of the iBook (which is connected via ethernet), but I could not find anything in the system.log or other logs via the Console application.
When the TC is working and I then turn on AirPort on the MacBook, this is the last entries from the logs on the TC:
Jun 11 20:20:12 Severity:5 Clock synchronized to network time server time.apple.com (adjusted +1 seconds).

(Severity 5 is 'Notice', 7 is 'Debug')
I turned on AirPort on the MacBook at 20:29 and then nothing after those few lines; in this last case, the TC light was solid green but the iBook or iPod could not surf the web (it was flashing green with activity just before as I opened a web page on the iBook).
Still no solutions as of yet...

  • Vista on Macbook 2.4Ghz?

    Hi,
I am thinking of buying a Macbook 2.4Ghz but I need
Windows Vista Running on it as well. So I was wondering if
anyone had already tried it out and what they thought about the
performance of Vista on it, ignoring the fact that it would be slower than Mac
I was thinking of Aero enabled on Home Premium, with "gadgets"/"widgets" running.
So any helpful insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks...

I have run vista on my 2.4 ghz imac and the performance was fine. not fast and no aero (I think thats a limitation of vmware). i would suspect given the integrated video of the imac, vista would run slower and probably if aero support is enabled probably would slow the macbook down considerable given it has problems running on a pc

  • Problem with Macbook Pro 2,66Ghz and 4GB Kingston memory

    Hi all,
    I bought 2x 2GB Kingston memory(SODIMM - DDR2 @ 667MHz) in order to upgrade my MBP.
When I install both modules, the MBP won;t boot. I get a blank screen.
If I use 1 Kingston module at a time (1x1GB(original memory module)and 2GB(Kingston)) .It works fine.
Both of the Kinston RAM modules seem to be working fine, when not installed together, but MBP doesn;t start when both are installed at the same time.
Any idea of what the problem could be?
Is related to my MBP or it has to do with the Kingston Modules?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm having the same problem on the 2.4 (early 2008 2.4 GHz macbook pro.) I bought 2x 2gb Crucial RAM and installed correctly, but the machine doesn't start up. So, I tried every conceivable combination, but the new 2gb RAM only works when paired with one of the old 1gb sticks giving me 3 gb total.
The new 2gb sticks BOTH work (when paired with old RAM), just not together. The 2gb RAM they sold me shows its speed as 6400 800mHz -- Could the faster speed be the problem? My system profiler shows the 800mHz RAM as 667mHz when it is installed.
D.P. it looks like you have the same mbp as me. I talked to Apple Support on the phone a couple weeks ago doing my own research and learned (i'm not SUPER tech-savvy) that the laptop is 800mhz but will only accept ram of 667mhz because the computer has to be faster than the memory installed in it. They cannot be the same speeds. Don't know if this would cause the problem you are having, though.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Cs5 Brush cursor problem, on MacBook pro, tried the latest update, and the genious dude had no idea of what to do! Apple any fix?

Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break.  1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned.  No restart, no power on/off - nothing.  Frustration.  If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.

  • Problems reformatting MacBook Pro recovery disk missing

Hacing problems reformatting MacBook pro. Tried startup with option key but recovery disk option missing. Then tried the Mac os x disc that came with the MacBook Pro however when I get to the selection of where I want to install no HD option appears. Start up disk also appears to be missing. Can only start Mac in safe mode.

Remind them at this time you don't desire a service account, just desire a disc.  The only reason you would want an account is if you wanted them to help you with actual troubleshooting.
