Oddly Decreasing HD Space

A few days ago I upgraded to Snow Leopard without any problems; today I installed iWork for the first time. Just now, I left the laptop open while I charged my iPhone, and when I came back after about 20 minutes, I had a message saying that my Start-up Disk was full, to shut down all programs, delete some files, and relaunch Finder.
When I left my computer to charge the iPhone, I had over 25 GB of free space on my Hard Drive, but when I opened a new Finder window, it showed only about 200 MB of free space. Safari froze when I tried to open it to find an answer. Confused and with a computer apparently crippled by a lack of space, I deleted several huge files, freeing up about 10.6 GB. Within a minute Finder was telling me that I only had 9.55 GB; in another minute or so, I only "had" 8.4 GB; then 7.6 GB.
With no other options, I shut down the computer, waited a few minutes, and booted it up again. Now I'm showing 36.29 GB of free space, which makes sense considering I had about 25 GB and I deleted about 10 GB. I ran anti-virus software and found nothing.
I don't know if this is related to SL or iWork, but it is rather disturbing.
Any thoughts out there?

Good time to run the Apple Hardware Test
and make sure the startup disk is not failing.
Also, boot from the SL disk and run Disk Utility to see if there are any errors on the drive.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.

How do I decrease the space before a footnote

I cannot figure out how to decrease the amount of "leading" space before the footnotes begin. The paragaraph before the footnote line has not ended, so cannot simply decrease the amount of space after that particular paragraph. The answer must be pretty simple, I just can't find it. Thanks.

If you're referring to a PDF file, you can reduce its size by using Acrobat. If you don't have Acrobat, please feel free to try it out. You can download a free 30-day trial from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.
In Acrobat, you choose File > Save as Other > Reduced Size PDF, or File > Save as Other > Optimized PDF.

Empting the Trash - decreases disk space ?

I may be going crazy - but - I have noticed very recently then when I empty the Trash, my available disk space appears to decrease ? This is self defeating - as I am trying to free up disk space to improve performance. Is something happenning becasue my disk is getting very full ?
Have run Disk Utility on the disk - all reported to be ok.
Recently upgraded to Office 2004.

I have a separate discussion going regarding upgrading to Entourage 2004 - which appears to be dreadfully slow - while synchronising. I have just discovered that something is generating multiple files, all day long in the Entourage Temp folder - files named "Blck-xxxxxx" (where xxxxxx is numeric). Anywhere between 250kB and several MB - many of them. When I delete a few files elsewhere and empty the Trash I suspect that Entourage is racing ahead of me - taking up more disk space. This would explain the unexpected Trash emptying phenomena. But - any ideas on why Entourage 2004 should be generating the Blck files like mad (Entourage X didn't as far as I know - or at least must have deleted them...)?

Increase / decrease the space before / after a table -

According to the instruction, I closed InDesign and re opened it then immediately hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift, but there is no dialog window pop up. I did this a few times.
Then I tried to do it manually by deleting InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData. But in the folder (Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<language>\ ) I can see InDesign Defaults but no InDesign SavedData. I deleted InDesign Defaults anyway, re opened InDesign, nothing changed.

BRAND NEW Macbook Pro with decreasing disk space

I recently bought a Macbook Pro with supposedly around 750 GB of disk space. However, when I checked it before I installed windows on it, I noticed that there was only about 430 GB available.
I downloaded less than 10 apps, and only brought over less than 50 GB worth of pictures, audio and movies from my Windows.
Can someone PLEASE explain to me how I managed to acquire almost 300 GB worth of this 'other'? An explanation besides 'things that don't fit into other categories' would be very helpful.
This is less than a week old and there's almost nothing new that I've created or worked on with this Macbook. My apps don't take up that much space, I don't have backups, Time Capsule is NOT on, and the most I've done with changing system preferences is to change my wallpaper and screensaver. So where is this all coming from? I honestly feel that I've been cheated of the 300 GB which was almost the disk space of my PC that ran Windows! And I never even used up that much since I bought my Windows!
At any rate, how do I get RID of it?

Screen view has odd characters for spaces

Snow Leopard is seriously ticking me off. I can't see standard space characters in ID and my apple mail displays cyrillic in all replies. I tried deleting helvetica from sys folder but it keeps coming back.
I saw a thread a few weeks back how to fix the ID preview but couldn't find it.

Here's my apple mail preview. Only REPLIES turn to cyrillic when they come back the 2nd time.

I run font finagler daily in an effort to clear this up. No go. I know it's helvetica thing in apple because as soon as I reboot I get t font conflict warning. Big surprise. I use Helvetica Neue Std and apple uses an otf helvetica neue. Short of never using Helvetica Neue again, I can't think of how to get rid of the conflicts. I've had to strip Leopard off just to work.

How to increase (or decrease) the space around a photo?

I have some text and photograph in a call out on the page. The text is justified and wraps around the photo box, but it is very close to the photo edges.
Is there a way I can increase this spece to give it a more easy on the eye appeal?

Ram upgrade, ssd space decreased?

I just upgraded my macbook pro with 16 gb corsair ram, and after the upgrade I noticed that my ssd free space decreased with 10-12 gb. Is this normal?

It is normal to see a decrease in space proportional to the size of the memory increase. This is because OS X dedicates a "Sleep Image" for the contents of your RAM. Naturally this is the same size as the memory you have installed.
4GB memory - 4GB allocated for the sleep image. 8GB for 8GB and so on.

Hard Drive Capacity Issue -- 51 GBs missing btwn utilized and avail space

I have a 200MB internal hard drive.
My SYSTEM PROFILER states:
Capacity=185.99GB (which I understand due to system use, etc)
Available= 26.25 GB (odd)
This available space reading seemed odd as I don't have much data on the HD (transferred files using Migration Assistant from a 80gb, 1.67ghz older G4 laptop).
So I went to the ACTIVITY MONITOR and looked at DISK USAGE at it states:
Space Utilized= 99.14 GB
Space Free= 25.85 GB
With a total of 124.99 GB between the two (the adjacent pie chart total)
MY QUESTION: If I have a HD with a capacity of 185.99 GB, with only 99.14 GB utilized, why is the space free missing 51 GBs? Where did this memory space go?
Note: I have never partitioned the Hard Drive or created any sort of RAM Disk.
Anyone? Please help.

UPDATE BUT STILL NO ANSWER:
Ran DISK UTILITY which fixed some minor errors and how states "Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
But the issue remains - I have a 200GB hard drive but the data at the bottom of this utility reads:
Capacity : 186.0 GB (199,705,673,728 Bytes)
Available : 26.3 GB (28,291,375,104 Bytes)
Used : 98.6 GB (105,916,047,360 Bytes)
Number of Folders: 173,085
Number of Files: 886,070
HOW CAN I ONLY HAVE 26.3GB available when I have only used 98.6GB of 186GB = Should be a 87.4 GB balance available, not 26.3 GB, right????????
What is the deal here? Is this related to MobileMe or iPhone issue maybe?
The hardware start-up test and disk utility test are all clean. Someone? Anyone?

My server has 19 GB disk space and 49MB free space. There are about 450 tables with live data. The size of each tables varies from 1.7GB to 10MB.
1. Auto resize of datafiles will not decrease the space but increase the datafiles.
2. If resize the datafiles to 100MB will prevent the data growth
I am stuck.
What would be the recommended solution ?

How to change space between folder icon and text on personal toolbar?

I have a few folders on the personal toolbar with just a letter to indicate what they are, but on the theme I'm using, the letter is too far away from the folder it belongs to and partially falls under the next folder icon. I don't want to increase the spacing between all icons to show the full letter, as this decreases the amount of icons you can have on the toolbar. Instead I want to decrease the space between the folder and text belonging to it, so it's right next to it instead of 5 pixels away.
I've found various entries to change padding and margins in userChrome.css, but it's always for around the icon, I don't know where to look to close the space between the icon and its corresponding text.

Did you check the value of the margin-left of the text?
You can set negative margin values if necessary.

Space utilization and optimal row size in Data Blocks in Oracle 11g

My main concern till now is to find the Optimal no. of rows/tuples per one oracle data block of size 8192. For that purpose i'm doing different kind of testing.
I created one table:
SQL> create table t5
2 (x char(2000));
Table created.
Inserted 4 rows in it.
Queried to check in which block no's these 4 rows exist.
SQL> SELECT x,DBMS_ROWID.ROWID_BLOCK_NUMBER(rowid) "Block No."

SQL> analyze table t5 compute statistics;

8 data blocks are initially allocated. but my question is that while creating table of even small sizes, every time i'm seeing that it shows BLOCKS (used) are 5.
why 3 block are EMPTY_BLOCKS allocated all the time?
AVG_SPACE is the FREE space in every BLOCK that is used if i'm not wrong?
In this scenerio 3 rows (each of around 2006 bytes) are inserted into into one BLOCK of 8192 i.e. 8192-6006=2186. 2186 is the PCTFREE or what?
How can I see this CHAIN_CNT column value other than 0?
How can actually I find the optimal no. of rows/tuples in 1 data block that will not increase OVERHEAD on the system.
I'll highly appreciate the genuine help and solid suggestions.

what?PCTFREE is a percentage. You haven't specified what you set it to, but that decreases the space in a block available for inserts to 8192 * (1 - PCTFREE/100).

Decrease Datafile Dimension

Hi experts.
I'm using ORACLE 10g and Enterprise manager. I need to decrease a datafile dimension (4,5 GB) to 600 MB. For normal extent it's ok.... but decreasing datafile can give me some problem. I need a coalesce? or coalescing is automatically done when i change dimension in Enterprise Manager?
What can i do for decrease datafile space?

ok, i'm trying this pocedure that seems to work:
alter table SYS.WRH$_OPTIMIZER_ENV move tablespace SYSAUX;
Then, Its index will be invalid, so i must do:
alter index SYS.WRH$_OPTIMIZER_ENV_PK rebuild tablespace SYSAUX online;
But i receive this error:
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01502: index 'SYS.WRH$_OPTIMIZER_ENV_PK' or partition of such index is
in unusable state
I've tried to drop, rebuild the index but there's always an error:

How to control TitledBorder insets / margin / buffer / space?

I'm trying to remove some space on my GUI. Here's a simple example, with a couple buttons in a JPanel with a TitledBorder.
Is there any way to decrease the space between the buttons and the border (especially the top one)?
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the TitledBorder's insets, but I don't see any obvious way to decrease it.
I don't understand what the getBorderInsets() method does, or what I should pass to it.

So you need to override this method to return your required insets:
