OEL 6 when Redhat go KVM

As I understand it, Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 will drop support for Xen in favour of KVM.
Given OEL and Oracle VM etc. is based on Xen, does anyone know what Oracle are planning for OEL following Redhat when this happens?
Thanks

Oracle VM is a virtualization platform and a management tool (Oracle VM Manager). It is strictly coincidental the virtualization technology is currently based on Xen.
That being said, Oracle VM (OVM) is not the Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL). Any similarity between the two is their combined heritage and DNA molecules. Oracle developed OVM leveraging the Xen basis but OVM is not Xen. Theoretically, Oracle could change out the underlying virtualization layer transparently to customers' guest domU clients. With the acquisition of Virtual Iron, Oracle can bury the virtualization technology even deeper behind the user interface tools.
So, what I expect is that as Red Hat drops support for Xen in RHEL, so will Oracle in OEL. But OVM is a separate product with different rules.

• Mac Pro keeps crashing when using with KVM. where to start my investigation

hi guys.
i have recently ordered ATEN CS-1762 KVM switch (2 ports model) to control my Mac and PC with a single keyboard and mouse. This KVM supports USB and DVI. the problem i have is Mac crashing when i switch from PC. I contacted mfg lately and they are unaware of this issue due to not having Mac Pro to test with this appliance. They have tested it with Mac Mini, G4 and G5 though and all was OK. based on this they put a description that this box is compatible with Mac. Anyway, being relatively new Mac user i ask for your help.
here are my steps and some ATEN's thoughts:
1. accroding to ATEN tech support, i should power up my second computer after the first one was started and is running. firstly i start the Mac Pro, 5 mins after that i power up my PC.
2. When both computers are up and running (Mac is in KVM focus), i switch to PC and all seems OK. I have noticed though that if NumLock is activated during the PC session, I won't be able to switch back to Mac. However, even though NumLock is OFF i still may have troubles when switching back to Mac. So it is not the rule, but maybe the clue to start with..
NOTES:
1. if i start PC first, Mac won't start at all. The power led will be on, but there will be no picture on the monitor and it won't accept any keyboard/mouse inputs as well as it will be network inaccessible.
2. I tried looking into Mac's logs but need your help in getting this clear.
here is the log. as you will see it stops at 13:04 and then continues at 13:08 after reboot.
i've seen some parallel's VMs but i don't have Parallels installed. i used to have it, but then it never happened to work so i deleted it from the machine. can this be the case it is still somewhere?
pls guys, any thoughts are very welcome!!!
PS: i can cause Mac to crash the same way if necessary or if log looks inclomplete. the thing forgot to mention is: when Mac crashes and i reboot it, it will not necessarily boot up completely. i've noticed that i would have to reset the KVM switch prior to Mac's successful start up. so maybe i copied the wrong log (not the one immediately after the crash). pls advise here
Alex
EDIT: specs for machines are:

ok so i experimented a little with the hardware and here what i have to the moment:
1. i thought that the usb kb could be the case for mac os to crash so i disconnected the cable from the KVM and plugged normal apple kb to the mac.
2. however when i tried switching back to mac, the machine crashed again.
from what i noticed for the last few days 'working' with this kvm switch was the screen resolution changing while i was switching. meaning the screen flickered for couple of times prior to showing 1280x1024 that was set up in the system. during flickering the resoution became 1024x768. i 've seen it pretty clearly, just it was for half of a second.
also when powering up both machines, they were starting with 1024x768 and not 1280x1024 as was set up. i had to manually change the screen resolution on both machines (pc and mac) every time after successful start up.
so by far my understanding is that kvm switch forces monitor for 1024x768 during switches and on start up. it also causes the OSes (win2K and MacOSX) to lose 1280x1024 and accept 1024x768 as if the monitor was changed and couldn't operate at a higher resolution.
having said that i uploaded this info to kvm mfg (ATEN) and couple more mac forums so that this info may help someone else when ordering a kvm for mac. at the same time i am still open for any thoughts, advices and crazy ideas to get round this bug.

• T420 - external 24" monitor DVI- Displayport : not detected when connected via KVM switch

Hi,
I've been using a 2port USB KVM Switch from InLine for a long time connecting a mac mini and a macbook pro
to a 24" LCD. Recently I had to replace the MacBookPro with a T420. Unfortunately the T420 does not detect the
monitor, when connected via the KVM switch.
I tried:
A) T420 -> Lenovo Displayport to DVI-Adapter -> KVM-Switch -> 24" monitor: NO SUCCESS
B) T420 -> Thinkpad miniDock Series 3 DVI Port-> KVM Seitch -> 24" monitor : NO SUCCESS
C) T420 ->Thinkpad miniDock Series 3 DVI Port-> 24" monitor - > SUCCESS
D) T420 ->Thinkpad miniDock Series 3 VGA Port -> 24" monitor - > SUCCESS
So I have a workaround, but leaving out the KVM switch is not a long term option.
This is all on Win 7 professional / 64bit
Using config (A) I then installed the Intel HD Graphics Driver version 8.15.10.2342 16 May 2011
SURPRISE: during driver install, the monitor WAS detected!!!
SECOND SURPRISE: after reboot I was back in the old situation where the monitor was NOT DETECTED
CONCLUSION:
Seems like a software issue with the Intel HD Graphice driver.
ANY HINT/COMMENT/HELP highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Michael

hey mgold,
as the T420 works correctly with the external monitor and with the miniDock ; it is sad to say the the KVM switch is non-compatible.
I would recommend that you get in contact with the manufacturer of the KVM. At the same time, try uninstalling the current video drivers of your T420 and see if it makes any difference with the KVM if the T420 is running on a generic driver

• PS2 mouse loosing wheel function when switching with KVM

Hello everyone,
I've used the last couple of days struggling with a problem with my arch linux where my mouse won't use the scroll wheel after switching my KVM. From a search here on the forum I deduced that I'm not the only one with that particular problem. Unfortunately noone seems to have found a solution. (None that I could find...)
What I have tried is:
* Change the mouse protocol in my xorg.conf file : auto, IMPS/2 and ExplorerPS/2 are the one's I could think of. Actually ExplorerPS/2 is the one used in my kubuntu setup, and there it works just fine!?
* Used xev to see if my wheel is triggering any response : Well, it doesn't.
* Compared the udev rules in my kubuntu setup to them in arch : I don't truly understand the rules, so I'm not sure if there is something to be gained from this. There are a lot more rules files in kubuntu.
* Run "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" : The list of devices contains two references to mice.
Mouse0 is "Macintosh mouse button emulation"
Mouse1 is "PS2++ Logitech TrackMan" (my mouse)
I'm also a bit unsure what to do with this info, but it seems the wrong mouse is recognized. Is there a way to force X to use mouse1?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. And if you have any ideas to what I can try, don't hesitate to write. Any help is greatly appreciated.
If a copy of some of my config files are needed, just let me know.

Actually it happens when I switch between arch and any of my other computers connected to the kvm. (windows and kubuntu)
Here is the serverlayout

and the input section

I noticed something today. When I lose the function of my mouse wheel, the wheel on my keyboard works instead? Don't know if that could be helpful in finding a solution.

• Monitor blacks out when booting with KVM Switch in the middle

Hi
I have attached my Xserve with an iMac G5 to a KVM Switch. When I boot up the Xserve the monitor blacks out after the apple logo.
I know that the Xserve tries to autodetect the monitor. Apparently it fails in its job when the KVM is in the middle. Everything works well when I remove the KVM and connect the monitor directly to Xserve.
Any ideas how do I disable the monitor autodetect feature - or something?
Xserve (intel) Mac OS X (10.4.1) dkvm-4u KVM switch

Hi all
I did try that. No luck.. Strangely enough, I realized that when the server boots up, the login screen defaults to 85HZ refresh rate. I found a site that explains the plist file that you can change to force it to 60HZ. What is weird it if I boot the Mac connected to another LCD, then move the cable to the KVM, it works. It almost seems like when the mac is booting, it sends some sort of signal just before the login screen comes up, that screws up this KVM. Tried updating firmware, still in the process of speaking with the KVM support people...
very strange..

• Successful installation of 8iEE 8.1.7 on RedHat linux 7.2 but no luck with Oracle 9i

Hi All,
I've successfully installed Oracle8i EE version 8.1.7 on RedHat
Linux 7.2. However, I have NOT had much luck installing Oracle
9i version 9.0.1 on RedHat Linux 7.2. I am wondering if anyone
in this forum has any luck installing Oracle 9i on RedHat Linux
7.2. I am running Linux kernel 2.4.7-10.
Now I am not trying to start a shouting match here; however, it
seems to me that a person with any common sense would not run
Oracle database on a Windows platform. Instead of running it
on Windows platform, one would be much better off running it on
Linux platform. I am currently Oracle EE 8.1.7 on an dual-Intel
processor 266MHZ with 512MB of RAM with Linux as the Operating
System. I have to say that the performance of the box is really
solid. At the same time, I am also running Oracle EE 8.1.7 on
an identical hardware system with Win2K server and I have to say
that the performance system is really pitiful on this Win2k server.
The windows box can only 1 instance at a time. If I try to have
two instances running at the same time, the windows box just comes
to a screeching halt. In contrast, the Linux box really rocks. In
a testing environment, I have 3 instances running at the same time
and the linux is barely breaking a sweat. I am getting maximum
performance out of the linux box because I recompile the linux kernel
to optimize the box to run Oracle database.
Having said that, as an Oracle DBA newbie (with less than six months
of Oracle DBA experience, the last ten years as a Cisco/Unix Engineer),
I find it fascinating that Oracle is only certified to run on SUSE (may
be I am wrong and someone can correct me on this one) when RedHat is
probably the dominant Linux distro. It took three days to get Oracle 8i
version 8.1.7 to install on RedHat Linux 7.2. Why Oracle is slowed to
support Linux RedHat is something I just don't understand.
OK, enough of venting my frustration, if anyone has successfully installed
Oracle 9i EE version 9.0.1 on RedHat Linux 7.2, please share your knowledge.
In the mean time, if anyone interested in obtaining instructions on howto
install Oracle 8i version 8.1.7 on Redhat Linux 7.1/7.2, send me an email
at [email protected] and I will send the instructions. The instructions
are written specifically for "windows dummies" so it is very to read and
follow. If you have been Unix for a long time, there will be instructions
in there that are so easy some of you may ask why put those in there in the
first place. My response would be: "windows dummies".
Regards,
Michael (david)

I very much agree with you Oracle is working very much better on Unix/Linux than Windows BUT in many cases you are obliged to use windows ( in Case that My company high managment enforce it ) , I have installed 9i on Windows and Linux , I am herunder including the full details :
========================================================================
Installing Oracle 9i on Linux
Linux : Redhat 7.2
Oracle : 9i Server EE 9.0.1.0.0
RAM Used : 256 M Ram
Hard Disk : IDE RAID
Linux Kernel : 2.4.4-10
JDK : Blackdown jdk118_v3 => downloaded from www.blackdown.org
All shell here is the Bash shell ( Bourne again shell )
1. To run a shell script over Linux , just drag the shell file from the file manager and drop it to a shell window
Be sure to have swap space of 400 M or more
If the systems stop responding for some time , leave it , it will continue
Be sure to make a stage area for the CDs # 2 , 3 only because you will start from the CD 1 but after going in the installation the CDROM freezes and refuses to open door to replace CD ,, in this case you will switch to the last 2 CDs from the stage area
Make sure you have the following executables at /usr/bin : MAKE , AR , LD , NM , C for Unix that is installed during Linux installation from the distribution media
Steps ( Root User ) :
1. be sure to have to have your server domain is like hostess.com.eg and you can be able to ping it
 open /etc/hosts
 add a line as follows ( for instance ) :
 192.168.0.11 hostess.com.eg hostess
 ping hostess.com.eg
 ping hostess
 ping 192.168.0.11
 be sure to have a replay for all of them
2. install JDK inside the /usr/local directory => after downloading the JDK you can easily decompress it but just clicking at it using the GUI
3. get to the / prompt
4. type ln s /usr/local/jdk118_v3 /usr/local/java
5. download binutil RBM from Redhat for version 7 of Linux to downgrade binutils for Linux 7.2 or you will encounter an error at the third CD set
6. download it from : ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/7.0/en/os/i386/redhat/rpms/binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
7. run it as follows : rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.10.0.18-1.i386.rpm
8. change to /proc/sys/kernel
9. type cat sem
10. you will get : 250 32000 32 128
     250 => SEMMSL
     32000 => SEMMNS
     32 => SEMOPM
     128 => SEMMNI
11. you need to have the SEMOPM to be 128 , to do so , locate the file called sem open it replace the value of 32 with 128
12. type again cat sem to be sure of taking the required effect
13. after the installation ends just re-install the 7.2 utils again as follows :
14. rpm -Uvh force nodeps binutils-2.11.90.0.8-9.i386.rpm
15. you can find the last RPM at the 7.2 CD set
16. after downloading the Oracle files from the net you need to decompress it as follows (one step) :
 zcat linux9i_disk1.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
 zcat linux9i_disk2.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
 zcat linux9i_disk3.cpio.gz | cpio idmv
17. you can decompress them at 2 steps as follows :
 gunzip linux9i_disk1.cpio.gz
 gunzip linux9i_disk2.cpio.gz
 gunzip linux9i_disk3.cpio.gz
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk1.cpio
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk2.cpio
 cpio idmv < linux9i_disk3.cpio
18. Now you have 3 directories , have care when Burning them to CD because you need to take care of paths
19. if you have downloaded the files via a Windows machine and have a MKS installed over it you can easily invoke Visual Pax and decompress the files at one go using the GUI program
20. log on to Linux as Root and run commands in the file commands.txt
21. log on as user Oracle to be sure that its created
22. log on as root again
23. get to the directory of /home/oracle
24. enable showing the system files
25. open the file of .bash_profile
26. add the accompanied bash file contents at the end of it to set the environment variables
27. log on as user Oracle
28. open shell and type set and be sure that environment variables are set correctly
29. open shell and change to the cdrom by typing cd /mnt/cdrom => Linux 7.2 is an auto mounting OS so you at no need to mount the CD drive prior to using it and if you need to mount it just type : AS ROOT
 mount t iso9660 /mnt/cdrom /cdrom
 this is surly after creating a directory at / called cdrom
30. Start the installer ( as Oracle User ) by typing ./runinstaller
31. the installer will ask you to run a started script as root , you may open a shell and type su then open Nautilus ( if using Gnome or File manager as super user if using KDE ) and drag the noted file to the shell screen and press enter ,, after it is ended continue with the installer
32. if asked to supply JDK home directory then it is /usr/local/java
33. Unix group Name ( to update Oracle software ) : oinstall
34. Oracle home is : /oracle/9.0.1
35. base directory : /oracle/orainventory

• T410 won't recognize external monitor on KVM

I have a ThinkPad T410 with Windows XP SP3. I've installed the latest Presentation Director (4.55) and the latest Intel HD drivers (6.14.10.5273). If I hook up my external LCD monitor (an HP L2045w) directly from the VGA port on the monitor to the VGA port on the laptop, I can extend my video display to this monitor. However, if I attach the monitor through a KVM switch (a Belkin Omniview E series), I can't. I don't have a dock for this laptop.
The weird thing is that if I set the BIOS so that the external display is the boot display, the external mointor shows the boot screens even when on the KVM switch. I can even get the external display to work on the KVM switch if I boot into Safe Mode. But when I boot into Normal mode while on the KVM switch, the external monitor goes dark as soon as Windows switches video modes, and after I log in I can't extend my display onto the external monitor.
Any ideas?
BlueBearr

I'm having exactly the same problem.. I'm thinking it might be a power issue (the power adapter for the omniview series was optional) - but I've never seen this before, and I'm seeing other external monitor issues crop up... let me know if you find a solution.
Oh, my keyboard and mouse work fine, just not the monitor.

• KVM Switch seems to misbehave in kde.

When using the kvm switch to swap between PC's when i come back to Arch all my shortcuts go haywire. Capslock reverses its self, so caps lock on means cap locks off, shift letter acts like ctrl letter i.e trying to type in a message box in konqueror shift t gives me a new tab. Bash behaves strange it gives me ctrl letters again, i.e typing s I get (i-search). Scroll wheel will zoom in/out fonts in konqueror rather than the default scroll up/down.
Following links opens a new tab where it would follow the link and open in the same tab. I've run out of ideas I tried re-installing all of kdebase, I tried both kernels, now I'm stuck I can't see anything in the logs. Any ideas much appreciated.
It can be cured by typing reset in console, sometimes I need ctrl j a couple of times.
This is kdemod 3.5.7-18 with either the latest ck kernel or the default Arch one.
My apologies if someone thinks this belongs somewhere else please move it.

Thanks Skoal
Garlics not working, but think that's all I'm left with.
After posting last night out of curiosity I un-installed kdemod installed kde proper rolled back a kernel still the same. I'm pretty sure its unrelated to kde or the kernel now so I suspect its the kvm. I've got nothing bound to ctrl ctrl.
What I find strange is the recovery, why does ctrl j several times or sometimes in a new konsole window followed with reset work, why would this affect my kvm or the way its being interpreted?
Now to try a new user Fingers crossed this works but I got a feeling this won't be the case afterwards I'll try another usb port. After that as I've not got another keyboard(Though I'm 100% input devices are fine as the other OS isn't showing any strange symptoms) I'll swap the ends of the kvm and see if I can make it happen on the other OS.
Dmesg is empty I get no mentions when it happens, I monitored it whilst doing it and prowled all the logs just to make sure.
I'll post back if there is a solution but I think one side of the kvm is on its way out perhaps.

• Macmini after EFI 1.7 and kvm, no display

New Macmini, late 2012, updated EFI firmware 1.7, GEFEN KVM 2x1 switch, Apple Cinema display 21' :
When directly connected to Apple Cinema Display = OK
When connected through KVM switch (+HDMI to DVI adapter) = black screen on cinema display, mouse & keyboard seem (?) to switch succesfully (flicker on mouse after switching).
No problems previously with older Macmini's and Macbook ...
Any suggestions ???
Thanks

KVM switches are either compatible with Macs or they are problematic at best.
I had a KVM here that when I switched to another screen/keyboard, the screen would stay black, until I disconnected and reconnected the Mac video cable. It was a PITA. Threw it in the trash eventually.
I now have a mini and a nettop Linux box, both connected to the same monitor with DVI and VGA respectively. The screens are switched with a button on the monitor. If I need a keyboard on the Linux box, I attach one, otherwise I ssh into it and use the Apple keyboard. There is a separate wireless USB mouse on the Linux box, as needed.

• Solaris 10 Unable to use "Dumb" KVM (Avocent SwitchView USB 4-Port)

I have two Sun Blade 150 clients, one loaded with Solaris 8, the other Solaris 10.
I noticed that if I put the clients on a "dumb" KVM (Avocent SwitchView USB 4-Port), that the Solaris 8 machine works when switching between KVM channels (the /var/adm/messages log shows 20+ usb related events from kernel and usba)
The Solaris 10 machine will not reconnect to the KVM, and I have to SSH into the box and reboot it.
Anyone had similar experiences with USB keyboard/mice reconnect working under Solaris 8 and not under Solaris 10?
When I SSH into the misbehaving Solaris 10 machine and do a "cfgadm", I can see that the USB devices have disconnected and will not reconnect, no matter what combination of cfgadm commands I run through. Only a reboot of Solaris 10 fixes the problem. A sub-optimal solution.
And yes, newer "smart" KVM's work (IOGear GCS1734), just not the older "dumb" Avocent.
Any help is appreciated.

• Multipath.conf for oel 6.4 and oracle zfs appliance

i have a zfs 7320 storage appliance connected via brocade fiber switches to clustered linux servers. one zfs controller with four fiber connections each server has two fiber connections. there are redundant switches so zfs is connected with two fiber connections to each switch and each server is connected one fiber connection to each switch. the zfs appliance manual does not have oel or redhat or any other similar 6.x multipath configuration. oracle support or sales has not been able as of yet to find multipath config for 6.x and suggested i post it here. Since I had issues that seem to be resolved with new zfs appliance software I want to verify my multipath config before i put the unit back in production, I would feel much better with a known good config.
This is what is in the manual for 5.x linux:
device
vendor "SUN"
product "Sun Storage 7310" or "Sun Storage 7410" (depending on storage system)
getuid_callout "/sbin/scsi_id -g -u -s /block/%n"
prio_callout "/sbin/mpath_prio_alua /dev/%n"
hardware_handler "0"
path_grouping_policy group_by_prio
failback immediate
no_path_retry queue
rr_min_io 100
path_checker tur
rr_weight uniform
This is what seems to work with 6.x:
device {
vendor "SUN"
product "ZFS Storage 7320"
getuid_callout "/sbin/scsi_id --whitelisted --replace-whitespace --device=/dev/%n"
prio alua
hardware_handler "0"
path_grouping_policy group_by_prio
failback immediate
no_path_retry queue
rr_min_io 100
path_checker tur
rr_weight uniform
}

Nice to see a proper redundant storage fabric layer for once on OTN. ;-)
We've been in a similar position using multipath with a custom storage layer (Infiniband based). Like you we hunted for a best-match config - and then stress tested the fabric layer using fio (Flexible I/O Tester). And don't forget to pull some fibre cables, or shutdown/powerdown one of the fibre channel switches, while fio tests are running.

• UCS KVM Manger Security Prompt

Since setting our UCS Manager to use HTTPS, we get security prompts when opening the KVM manager.
After doing some traces, it looks like the KVM manager makes the following HTTP calls:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/pub/swz/crossdomain.xml
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/crossdomain.xml
As a result, the HTTPS verion of the KVM manager prompts saying there is unsecured content (the HTTP calls) on the page.
It's not a huge deal to hit yes or no to get past it, but it seems like some lazy programming.
Any ideas on if this will get fixed? The fpdownload.adobe.com pages are available in HTTPS which would fix the issue.
We are running 1.4.1j.

OK...here's a link to the Cisco Bug Toolkit:
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/action.do?hdnAction=searchBugs
I just opened CSCtn08512. Might be a bit until it is viewable. Of course, I could have missed an existing bug and it might be scrapped.
Hope that helps!

• [SOLVED] KVM and Bridged Networking

I've got KVM working and a Windows 2008 server installed on a image now, but it's only getting a NAT ip address. I need to get this server onto my main network, on Windows I'd use Virtual Box and Bridged Networking, but I thought I'd give KVM a try out.
I've followed the setup at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KV … Networking
Using Netcfg
Bridged networking is used when you want your VM to be on the same network as your host machine. This will allow it to get a static or DHCP IP address on your network, and then you can access it using that IP address from anywhere on your LAN. The preferred method for setting up bridged networking for KVM is to use the netcfg package. You will also need to install bridge-utils.
Netcfg#Configuring_a_bridge_for_use_with_virtual_machines_.28VMs.29
And this page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … _.28VMs.29
I've got a bridge working I believe (all my stuff is DHCP by the way)

I've got "bridge" added to my rc.conf as a MODULE which is loaded. (I saw reference to this somewhere else on the forum that this might be needed)
I'm starting my VM with the following command
qemu-kvm -vnc 192.168.1.52:0 -hda Nekomi -m 2048 -smp 2 -net nic
Yet I still can't get an IP outside of the 10.0.0.0 range on the VM.
The VNC line above is because the HOST has not VGA output at all, completely headless.
I'm trying to get this working and trying to learn at the same time. KVM is new to me, as is bridged networking on linux.
Any ideas? Thanks

Sorry for the delay, bit a PC rebuild occurred :-(
Anyway, I managed to get this working with steps #1-#7 from the linked section. Thanks for that. I did have a few minor issues in getting a DHCP on the host machine itself, turns out I'd missed a single ) from the daemons section of rc.conf. A human error, but difficult to fix as the machine was rendered off the network and without a VGA card... fun!
I diverge, I have this script to bring up a bridge when the qemu-kvm starts
#!/bin/sh
echo "Executing /etc/qemu-ifup"
echo "Bringing up $1 for bridged mode..."
sudo /sbin/ifconfig $1 0.0.0.0 promisc up
echo "Adding $1 to br0..."
sudo /usr/sbin/brctl addif br0 $1
sleep 2
But when the kvm shutdowns it complains it can't find qemu-ifdown script. So I'm thinking of making one but just want to check it over first.
#!/bin/sh
echo "Executing /etc/qemu-ifdown"
echo "Removing $1 from br0..."
sudo /usr/sbin/brctl delif br0 $1
echo "Taking down $1 from bridged mode..."
sudo /sbin/ifconfig $1 0.0.0.0 promisc down
sleep 2
I've reversed the logic here, is the above the correct way to bring down the guest interface?

• Inconsistent KVM behavior in Leopard?

Has anyone else had problems with inconsistent behavior when using a KVM under Leopard? (Display mirroring is not enabled)
Under Tiger, when I switched my laptop to my Cinema display, the entire contents of the display would move - dock, menubar, all applications and windows.
Since installing Leopard, the behavior is inconsistent. The Dock and the menubar move, as do some applications. However, most applications remain on the laptop screen. Additionally, an application such as Safari, when moved to the Cinema display, still opens new windows on the laptop screen.
Any thoughts?

Does the delete button have a light glow around it? If it does, you can tap the space bar and that will be selected.
If not, look in the System Preferences application, go to the Keyboard and Mouse panel, Keyboard Shortcuts tab, you'll select the Full keyboard access, both options allow this function.
I use this tapping on the space bar for many different options in various dialog boxes throughout the OS and applications.
This has worked at least since Tiger, may have been around longer, I don't recall. But I have used it for years and love it.
Hope that helps.
Joel.

• Listener keeps failing when using Veritas Cluster Control 3.5

Hello -
During that past 4 months, my Listener has failed on 3 different occasions. The Veritas software attempts to test and see if the Listener is up, and then it issues a kill command. I end up with the TNS-12560 error in the sqlnet.log. The only way to resolve the issue is to stop and restard the Listener. Is anyone out there running Oracle 8.1.7.4 on Solaris 64 with Veritas Cluster 3.5?
I also added the queuesize=1024 to the Listener.ora file about 5 months ago.
Thanks.

ok so i experimented a little with the hardware and here what i have to the moment:
1. i thought that the usb kb could be the case for mac os to crash so i disconnected the cable from the KVM and plugged normal apple kb to the mac.
2. however when i tried switching back to mac, the machine crashed again.
from what i noticed for the last few days 'working' with this kvm switch was the screen resolution changing while i was switching. meaning the screen flickered for couple of times prior to showing 1280x1024 that was set up in the system. during flickering the resoution became 1024x768. i 've seen it pretty clearly, just it was for half of a second.
also when powering up both machines, they were starting with 1024x768 and not 1280x1024 as was set up. i had to manually change the screen resolution on both machines (pc and mac) every time after successful start up.
so by far my understanding is that kvm switch forces monitor for 1024x768 during switches and on start up. it also causes the OSes (win2K and MacOSX) to lose 1280x1024 and accept 1024x768 as if the monitor was changed and couldn't operate at a higher resolution.
having said that i uploaded this info to kvm mfg (ATEN) and couple more mac forums so that this info may help someone else when ordering a kvm for mac. at the same time i am still open for any thoughts, advices and crazy ideas to get round this bug.
