OEM ADDM & Tuning Pack

Hi Friends,
I'm evaluating the Oracle Diagnostic pack and tuning pack to compliment the already available standard SAP tool for tuning like st04/st03n,etc
Few questions
1. Anyone see the worth of the above 2 pack ?
2.sto4 can show you only so much why certain read/write in DB is slow, will this be the better tool in market for diagnostics
3. Anyone sees negative impact/ horror stories due to this?
4. Oracle has improvised OEM in 11g and 10g significantly, any inputs on this and usage on RAC
5. Any other great inputs are welcomed as well
Thanks & Best Regards,
Naren

Hi Naren,
From an Oracle DBA perspective, which is where am coming from, these tools are very helpful but because you are on SAP where you are really bound by SAP metrics, these are not going to be helpful to you because SAP recommendation supercedes Oracle's recommednation.
Note also that these packs require a separate license. If you are not licensed to use it, you should not be using them. From Oracle10g onward, Oracle had a record everytime that you use the diagnostic pack. You should have gotten this warning the first time that you try and use the diagnostic pack.
IMHO, most tuning are supposed to be coming from an application end and this is what most of the OEM reports will show you, the most expensive SQLs, you need to put index here and there, log switching, memory not enough etc. Most of these are already discussed in SAP notes. Additional indexes if ever one is identified, you will still have to get SAP Support to approve that, so what's the point?

  • Diagnostic pack, Tuning pack are not in OEM 10g, Add partition to a table

    Hi All,
    I have 2 questions:
Q.1: In Oracle 9i Oracle Enterprise Manager java console, we had "Diagnostic Pack" and "Tuning Pack" which helped us seeing performance tuning info (session's statistics such as cpu time, pga memory, physical disk reads, etc.) and privded help for sql tuning and performance improvements. But in 10g, the same product (Oracle Enterprise Manager java console) does not include these 2 packs, due to which we are unable to monitor and control performance tuning information/statistics. Now my question is, do we need to install these 2 packs separately in 10g? if yes, where can we get them? (I am sure in 9i, these packages came with OEM console and we didnt need to get them separately)
Q.2: I have a partitioned table having 5 partitions based on range partitioning. Now our requirements have changed and we need to insert values beyong the 5th partition, so we need a 6th partition. Can someone tell me the command to add a new partition to the table? I tried "Alter table xxx add partition yyy ....", but it didn't work. If any one can me the correct syntax, it will be great.
    Thanks in advance.

OP is talking about java-based EM, not web-based DBConsole. In fact he/she has to change to DBConsole, because 10g java EM doesn't longer support these tuning features.
Alter table ... partition syntax depends on the kind of partitioning, see the documentation:

  • How Install OEM Management Pack / Tuning Pack / Diagnostics Pack for 10g ?

Where I find Management Pack / Tuning Pack / Diagnostics Pack for 10g ?

There's no 1:1 relationship between the old and the new features. Mainly under the Performance tab you will find the features now. Out-of-the-box there are a lot of alerts active (disk and CPU utilization, tablespace getting full, bad SQL statements ...), these are shown automatically for a specific target, when a certain metric has reached. You can customize pre-configured alerts and also create new ones.
I recommend you see the gridcontrol documentation for more informations.

  • How to use Tuning Pack for SQL tuning

We're just getting started with 10g, and I'm more familiar with 9i. In OEM 9i, there was something called Oracle SQL Analyze. It allowed you to work on a problem SQL statement, adding hints, making other changes, etc., and then you could easily compare the plan for two versions of a query. You could also execute right from there and it'd let you click on a tab to view the statistics. You could compare the statistics for two versions of the same statement.
I don't see anything like this in 10.1 GC, and that's with both the Diagnostic and Tuning Packs activated. There are a number of ways you can identify an SQL for analysis, then get an explain plan, then get some recommendations. But I don't see anything that allows you to add hints, compare different versions of the explain plan, or compare the statistics for different versions of a statement.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks.
    Dave

    Rodney,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I agree, the Java console which runs directly on Windows is quite limited. Change Manager is there, as you indicated. However, MetaLink note 277066.1 indicates that "Tuning Pack Functionality" is also available in the Java version, and I don't see any of it there.
What I'm looking for is a framework for testing different versions of an SQL statement. I want to be able to execute the current version of a statement and, for example, a modified version with a hint added. I want to be able to see at least the basic statisitics comparing the two exections (e.g., elapsed time, logical reads, physical reads). This was possible with SQL Analyze in 9i, but I can't find anything like it in 10g.
I have found both the 10g advisors you mentioned and they do seem to work, but they don't provide the same flexibility and power for working on statement tuning apart from what the advisors recommend.
    Thanks for all the suggestions/ideas...

  • Use of SQL Tuning pack  in SAP

We have activated the Oracle 'SQL Tuning pack'  however only one function "SQL Tuning Advisor" is activated/visible in ST04
and other functionality is not visible. We have already taken license of 'SQL Tuning pack' .
Other then this we want to use following oracle supported features.
    1) Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor
    2) Real-time SQL Monitoring
    3) Object Reorganization Wizard
As I know we can use "oracle enterprise manager" to use such oracle features, If SAP allow use of OEM in SAP environment.
    can someone help here please..?
    Thanks,
    Kapil Pandey

    Hello Kapil,
which other options did you expect to find in ST04? SAP note 1028068 speaks only of the "SQL Tuning Advisor" which will be activated:
As of Enhancement Package 1 for Basis Release 7.00 (that is, Basis Release 7.01), the function "SQL Tuning Advisor" is contained in the DBA Cockpit. This optional function requires the Oracle Tuning Pack to be licensed.
The other features should be used via the OEM, because they are not integrated in the DBACOCKPIT transaction:
    - Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor
    - Real-time SQL Monitoring (with OEM you even get a really useful visualization)
    - Object Reorganization Wizard -> better use brspace because it is supported by SAP

  • Remove Diagnostics Pack, Database Tuning Pack :Oracle 10g

    Hi All,
I want to remove Application Server Configuration Pack, Application Server Diagnostics Pack, Database Configuration Pack, Database Diagnostics Pack, Database Tuning Pack from 10g due to license restriction. How can I remove these packs from command line syntax in 10g as I don't have GUI access so unable to perform from OEM?

    Thanks Srini,
According to link provided by you we can revoke license with emcli tool but it is not installed with current database (10.2.0.4.0).
Please advice is there any procedure available which can disable all these packs in 10g.

  • SQL Tuning Pack for 10G R2 database

    Hi,
I am looking for a SQL tuning pack plug in with SQL Developer 2.1 release for Oracle 10g R2 database.
Any information this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Patchava

There is no 'tuning pack' plugin for SQL Developer, We can process trace files, monitor sessions etc.
If you are looking for specifics on things like SQL Advisor, SQL Profiles and things, we do not have specific features for them yet, but we have planned them in the future.

In order to run Windows Applications, you must own the applications and, since they require Windows, you must own Windows. There are technologies like wine that will allow Windows applications to run without Windows, but they tend to be flakey at best.

System Builder - just be sure to get 64-bit version, no one needs or wants 32-bit today, and only comes with one, while retail ships with both 32/64-bit media.
you can't install it and activate on different hardware later is all, and by then for what you saved, so what, Windows 8 or SP2 will be out.
A few people had trouble with Windows 7 SP1 for some reason and not sure exactly why, changes to the boot loader on the DVD I presume.

  • How to install 10g diagnostic and tuning pack

    Hi,
am new to 10g. in 9i there was a seperate CDs for diagnostic and tuning packs. But in 10g we didn't got any CD for this. So is it installed by default with 10g?. if yes is there any configuration required for using these packs. If it is not installed by default where i can get this?.
    Thanks in advance
    M.SUdhakar

    Hi
    These are not separate anymore.
In Grid Control go to Setup -> Management Pack Access to set them up.
Also see Chapter 2 in http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/license.101/b13552/toc.htm
Unfortunately, Oracle don't appear to have migrated all of the functionality of Diagnostics Pack and Tuning Pack to Grid Control, especially for databases < 10g. eg. the very useful Response Time Per Transaction metric is only available for 10g databases. Also, the graph viewing functionality looks poor.

  • Differernce between SQL Tuning Pack and SQL Tuning Advisor, Access Advisor

    Hi. all.
I have been using "TKPROF" in order to tune SQL till now.
I am learning 10g, and would like to know the difference
between "1. SQL Tuning Pack" and "2. SQL Tuning Advisor, Access Advisor".
Are they same thing? If not, what are the differences in their "functionality"?
All I know is that SQL Tuning Pack is not free, and SQL Tuning Advisor
is packed with default installation. Right???
Could you give me some html links or your "any advice and experience"?
Thanks in advance. Have a good day.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
There are alternatives to the Oracle tuning packs, and remember the SQL advisors are relatuively simple, finding missing indexes and recommending MV's.
A human can do a better job if you use the right techniques.
BTW, you can get a SQLTuning advisor license online for only $3k:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_news/2005_3_17_dql_tuning_access_advisor_licenses_available_online.htm
SHAMELESS PITCH! - I wrote a book that describes techniques for tuning with scripts, instead of the advisors, if you are interested:
    http://www.rampant-books.com/book_2005_1_awr_proactive_tuning.htm
    Hope this helps. . . .

  • Oracle Standard Diagnostic and Tuning Pack

Can you purchase a license for Oracle Diagnostic and Tuning Pack to be used in an already licensed Oracle Standard database? If so, can you add it as a named user license for one or two people, or does the license have to match the database license (which is presently a processor license)?
It seems to me that to license the Diagnostic and Tuning Pack you need to be upgrade to Oracle Enterprise Edition. Is this correct?

According to the Licensing Guide/Information these packs are not available (see Manageability section):
    - in Oracle 10.2 Standard Edition http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/editions.htm#BABJFHED

  • 11g AMM - Diagnostic+Tuning Packs required?

Am I required to purchase a license for the Diagnostic+Tuning packs in order to utilize Automatic Memory Management (AMM) in Oracle 11g?  I haven't been able to find any documentation online stating so.

Oracle uses some features internally that you would have to pay for if you used them (even just accessing the tables).  But as long as you don't access them yourself, you are fine.  You can check the view DBA_FEATURE_USAGE_STATISTICS and the access is controlled by Options and Packs CONTROL_MANAGEMENT_PACK_ACCESS
If you have access to MOS, this is explained in AWR Reporting - Licensing Requirements Clarification (Doc ID 1490798.1)
Edit:  Oracle Database Comparisons | Oracle Database | Oracle search for "Automatic Memory" and it shows it is available for all editions, even though you can only even buy diagnostics on Enterprise.
Edit2:  Of course, some things you can use: https://blogs.oracle.com/optimizer/entry/does_the_use_of_sql
