OES11 SP2 -- Use SLES SP3?

The question is simple.
Part1
Should I also be upgrading to SLES SP3 when I do the upgrade to OES 11 SP2?
Due to version confusion -- the answers given in this forum are not always Crystal Clear.
Part 2:
Is this spelled out somewhere in the (thousands of pages) of the documentation that I missed somewhere? (Perhaps I am having a "senior moment" and just can't see the words in one of the manuals.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers!

Yes; OES versions are, by default (with very, very few exceptions) linked
directly to SLES versions, with OES versions being one SP behind SLES SPs.
Thus, OES 11 SP2 is linked to SLES 11 SP3.

Top of the page under Meeting All Server Software and Hardware Requirements:
Code:
Server Software
As part of the OES 11 SP2 installation, you install SUSE Linux Enterprise
Server 11 SP3.
IMPORTANT:OES 11 SP2 services were developed and tested on a default and
fully-patched SLES 11 SP3 server base.
As you install OES 11 SP2, do not change any of the SLES 11 SP3 Base
Technologies package selections, such as Java support. Doing so can cause
various problems, such as the installation failing or one or more OES 11
SP2 services not working properly.
If you are installing on an existing SLES 11 SP3 server, be sure to verify
that all of the default SLES 11 SP3 components are installed before
attempting to install OES 11 SP2 services.
I would not define missing this as a senior moment; powerful products come
with lots of docs, and knowing exactly where to find one specific piece of
information is not always clear.
Good luck.

  • [SOLVED] Upgrade from SLES10 SP3 & OES2 SP2 to SP4/SP3 breaks NCS

    Hi folks,
(This post was originally meant to be a rant and a request for help, but
while writing the final paragraph i found the solution. It's still a
rant, but i figured i'd post my solution here in case someone else runs
    into the same issue.)
I've just spent several hours banging my head against a broken cluster
node. My system is a 32-bit SLES 10 VM running on VMware ESX 3.5.x.
I upgraded from SLES10 SP3 and OES2 SP2 to the next service packs for
each (using the move-to-oes-sp3 script in yast2 online_update).
Everything went well for the first few update/reboot sequences, then
after the final reboot on SLES10 SP4 & OES2 SP3, cluster services would
not load or join the cluster on restart.
I checked dmesg and found errors about "Loading module compiled for
kernel version 2.6.16.60-0.54.5-vmi" into a previous kernel version, so
i tried downgrading to that kernel version, only to find that it was
older than the one i had just upgraded from (it's the original SLES10
SP3 kernel). So i tried upgrading back to the same kernel which is
running on the other cluster node (2.6.16.60-0.77.1-vmi), but that did
    not work any better.
    <preaching>
I have to say that i'm not impressed that OES2 SP3 isn't even compiled
against the appropriate kernel, and because of SUSE's kernel RPM
overwrite policy there's no way i can select to boot from a previous
kernel to see if that fixes things. Note to SUSE and other distro
builders: if you're not doing kernel package upgrades like Red Hat or
Ubuntu (so that we can select to boot from the previous kernel from the
boot menu), you're doing it *WRONG*.
    </preaching>
I then upgraded again to the latest recommended kernel for SLES10 SP4,
and still no joy. Dmesg shows this error before the rot starts:
allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc=<size> to increase
    size.
When searching for this error i stumbled across
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132
    which pointed me to
    http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Common_Pr...lloc_too_small
Adding vmalloc=192M to /boot/grub/menu.lst and rebooting solved the
    problem for me.

    Paul

The system in question has kernel-bigsmp and kernel-vmi installed. We
    only ever boot from kernel-vmi.

When we installed the system (on OES2 SP1, i believe) it was a while
ago, and kernel-vmi with clocksource=acpi_pm on the kernel command line
was the only solution we could find to get reliable time. If there are
updated best-practice documents, i'd be happy to hear about them.
However, this is a production cluster and my boss is (rightly) rather
    reticent to make major changes.
    Paul
the official Vmware paper on time is that IF you're using SLES 10.x 32-bit you will use VMI and NO kernel params (ie, get rid of the clockpit and clocksource=blah).
But if 64-bit then you're okay.
The easiest, IMO (especially with vmware) is to use the miggui (migration utility). That's how I'm converting all my 32-bit servers in vmware to 64-bit. Works quite well.

  • OES11 SP2 - Linux File System and NSS Pools & Volumes

Planning to install our first OES11 SP2 server into an existing tree - the
idea is to run this new OES11 server virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.5
The existing tree has two physical NW6.5SP8 servers running eDirectory
Version 8.7.3.10b (NDS Version 10554.64). One of the existing Netware
servers is used for DHCP/DNS, File Sharing from three NSS volumes and
Groupwise 7.0.4 whilst the second server is used for FTP services and
eDirectory redundancy. Ultimately the plan is to have two virtualized OES11
SP2 server with one for file sharing and the other for making the move from
GW7 to GW2012. And we're planning to stick with NSS for file sharing on the
    new OES11 SP2 server.
I've come across a couple of posts for earlier versions of OES which
recommended not to put the Linux Native OS File System and NSS storage
pools/volumes on the same hard drive. Apparently the advice was a result of
needing to allow EVMS to manage the drive which could be problemmatic.
I've read the OES11 documentation which says that "The Enterprise Volume
Management System (EVMS) has been deprecated in SLES 11, and is also
deprecated in OES 11. Novell Linux Volume Manager (NLVM) replaces EVMS for
managing NetWare partitions under Novell Storage Services (NSS) pools."
So I'm wondering if there is still a compelling requirement to keep the
Linux Native File System and NSS pools/volumes on separate hard drives or
can they both now safely co-exist on the same drive without causing
headaches or gotchas for the future?
    Neil

    Hi Willem,
Many thanks for the further reply.
So we can just use the VMWare setup to "split" the one physical drive into
two virtual drives (one for the OS and the second for the pools).
And I've seen posts in other forums about the need for a decent battery
backed cache module for the P410i controller so I'll make sure we get one
    (probably 512Mb module + battery).
Can I ask what is the advantage of configuring each VM's virtual disk to run
on it's own virtual SCSI adapter (by setting disk1 to scsi 0:0, disk2 to
    scsi 1:0, and so on)?
    Cheers,
    Neil

  • OES11 SP2: Ganglia did stop updating

On one of my OES11 SP2 servers novell-ganglia does not update the RRD
databases any more. The web interface does run fine, but only old data
is available. gmond and gemetad are both up and running. A restart of
these services did not fix the issue.
The configuration is identical to that of other servers where the tool
is just running fine. So I'm a bit lost on where to look for the error.

    Thanks everyone,
Has anyone confirmed that this is the issue by simply renaming the first folder that unzips with a non-8.3 name? The rest seem to conform upon quick inspection? I jut completed my install by manually installing each of the different updated agents using the GUI, etc. The automatic update failed with the python error. Certainly would be nerve racking for someone less experienced. Something that I know we all want to avoid so that GroupWise is easier for new administrators to adopt.

    Trying to upgrade a OES11-SP1 Server OES11-SP2
but run into problems at Final stage of eDirectory Upgrade
Server is looking for OLD Master replica - which no longer exists
    History
Some month ago due to server crashes I added a Server (this time as a Virtual Server)
    Copied Data includin GW system
Ran NDSREPAIR to make this the Master Replica (old server now disregarded)
deleted OLD CA and recreated CA on the new server
    reconfigured GW etc
(single Server - no external replicas - this server)
Everything running fine for some months
Now needed to upgrade to OES11 SP2 and at final stage ie. when upgrading edirectory its looking for OLD IP
only option is ABORT - so my upgraded did not finish
I'm doing this as a Physical Media upgrade as per OES Manual
I went back to my BACKUP of the VM
I made sure /etc/sysconfig/edir_oes11_sp1 file had the correct IP
I went into YaST > OES Configuration and made sure there is NO mention of OLD IP in any of them LDAP, eDirectory, CIFS etc
are there any other config files I need to check??
    Any pointers much appreciated.

  • BO XI 3.1 SP2 upgrade to SP3 Problem

    Hi All,
I'm trying to upgrade our current BO XI 3.1 SP2 installation towards SP3.
The server it is running on has the following OS: Windows 2003 SP2 (32bit)
When performing the update, all goes well untill the point in the installation where it says "updating component registration"
immediatly when the installer enters this phase, I receive the following error:
    Error 2908: Could not register component {73DDBFD1-3CEC-4DE2-AD1F-5D9354AE44D6}
    Cancel - retry - ignore
When chosing ignore I receive a new error:
    Error 1935: An error occured during the installation of assembly component  {73DDBFD1-3CEC-4DE2-AD1F-5D9354AE44D6}
    OK
When clicking OK, the installer rolls back and the update isn't performed.
note that when the installation is performed with the BO Admin user, I receive both error messages, when running the update with any other local admin user, only the second error (assembly component..) comes up.
Would anyone have an idea on how to solve this ?
    Best Regards,

Thanks for the info Jonathan, good to know where the log files are
I restarted the installation (with the same end result) and noticed that the log file is created once I click cancel to abort the installation.
The log file is 65MB big
After a huge search in the log file I found the latest entries before the rollback, actually the point where it fails:

    Hi,
This is a security setting on your system that is resulting in this behaviour, not Flash Player installer itself, or anything with the installer.  There are many Google search results on this.  The first hit I got, was the following from the Microsoft forums:
    To unblock a software publisher:
    1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Go to the Content tab, Look under the Certificates section.
    3. Click on Publishers button.
    4. Select the Untrusted Publishers tab.

  • SLES sp3 w/OES11 sp2 media upgrade reboot to cursor

    Pre-upgrade
Sles 11 SP2, OES11 SP1, VMware 5.1 essentials on an Gen 8 HP Proliant DL380, plenty of RAM and CPU
I ran the upgrade media on a test server and everything seemed to go fine a couple of weeks ago. My school district is on spring break, so I decided to do some upgrades. I ran the update media on our one and only file storage production server. I left the upgrade options default, only updating existing packages (I checked to make sure what we are using was upgraded) and I received no errors during the install. Upon reboot, after the VMware splash screen, it just stays at a cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I tried to use system repair from the disk. It wanted to reinstall grub, but it hung on installing grub for 20+ minutes. I'm rerunning the repair now. Any other suggestions? I have until Monday to get this fixed. I'm avoiding using my prepaid support hours, but I have them if I need them.

So you originally did an offline upgrade from OES11sp1 to OES11sp2, right?
I'm curious.... do you maybe have a separate partition for /boot?
With what you are saying I can imagine something going wrong with the offline upgrade placing/upgrading boot files in the wrong location (in the /boot folder of the root partition instead of the boot partition), resulting in booting with an old kernel and thus having a mismatch with other files/drivers/libraries that did get updated properly.
Good to hear that you were able to finish the upgrade in good order after having gotten the server boot fixed!
    Cheers,

  • Tomcat running high utilization on OES11 SP2

I have Groupwise 2014 with webaccess and calendar publishing host installed on the same OES 11 SP2 in virtual environment. Tomcat is slowly eating up available CPUs until the system becomes unstable. Rcnovell-tomcat6 restart will temporarily clear the problem. The problem is described in TID 7010072 however, the document specifically says that the fix is not for OES11. Does anyone know how to address this on OES11?

Firstly I'm not aware of an equivalent TID specific to OES11 so I'll ask
    my Novell contacts.
OES11 uses novell-tomcat6 rather than tomcat6 as used with SLES11 with
    configuration file at /etc/opt/novell/tomcat6/conf/novell-tomcat6.conf
so in the meantime perhaps make the same change as noted in TID 7010072
for SLES11 to the OES11 file.
Note there is more than one line (re)defining CATALINA_OPTS so I'd be
tempted to add the following line below the last CATALINA_OPTS line:
    CATALINA_OPTS="$CATALINA_OPTS -Xthr:minimizeUserCPU -Xms800m -Xmx900m"
Restart the OES11 tomcat process via "rcnovell-tomcat6 restart".
    HTH.

We are experiencing the same issue on our OES GroupWise 2014 server. Restarting novell-tomcat6 fixes temporarily, but always returns. Anyone find anything further with this? Just downloaded (1/12/15) and installed latest available hotpatches for GW2014 and SLES/OES, but did not resolve issue.

  • Migedir Error going from NW6.5SP8 to OES2 SP2 on SLES10 SP3

I've searched the forums and was not able to find this particular problem so hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I can help. I have an issue with the Transfer ID utility erroring out at the DIB copy portion of a NetWare 6.5 SP8 migration to 64-bit OES2 SP2. The eDirectory Precheck and Preparation portion of the Transfer ID complete successfully with green check marks. When the Transfer ID gets to the DIB copy part I get a series of error messages.
This is the error from the mignds.log file:

It looks like the Mig utility can't run ncpmig.nlm on the source server for whatever reason. The previous steps completed successfully so I don't think it's an issue of login rights. The OES2 SP2 server is fully patched with all critical and optional patches. I'd like to add that I've done a couple migrations in my test lab prior to this and they both went through smoothly. I'm also following the exact same steps I used when I performed the lab migrations.
I've also tried the same migration using OES2 SP1 (fully patched and not), OES2 SP2 (non-patched) and OES2 SP3 (patched and not) with the exact same error message. This leads me to believe it's something in the source server causing the issue but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what.
Source server is running NW6.5 SP8 and eDir 8.7.3.10. Target server is OES2 SP2 and eDir 8.8.5 HP6. Does anyone have insight into why the Transfer ID is failing at the DIB copy? Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the late reply. Been extremely busy with our migrations and other issues. To answer the last question, our default administrator login to the tree is not called admin. We prefer not to use default names as they decrease security. I used my own login credentials, which also has full rights to the tree, to proceed with the migration. Determined, as a precaution, that the person performing the migration should add him or herself as a trustee to the source/destination servers AND the container the server objects live in. It's probably a redundant step but should decrease the likelihood of encountering the original issue.

  • I am still using WinXP SP3,will Firefox and Thundrebird still work or will I need to STOP updates?

    I have 2 old computers WinXP Sp2 &SP3 .
when should I stop Installing Updates?
I have Firefox 31 and want to use Thunderbird .

The minimum Windows needed is still WinXP SP2 as I see testers using 34.0a1 (which is on the Nightly development channel) on WinXP.

  • XP SP2 or XP SP3

I'm looking to buy a Nano 5th (current) generation, and saw on the Apple website that SP3 is required. I'm sure it used to read SP2..if I'm correct, maybe they changed it when MS announced no further support to SP2?
Anyway, my question is...will this 5th gen Nano work with XP Pro SP2 and the latest iTunes 9.2.1 version?
I ask because I don't want to 'upgrade' to SP3.
It's for my wife's PC laptop, not my 's

Go with SP3. Microsoft no longer supports SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/windowsxpsp2

  • XP SP2 using AIM 6.5 to OS X.4.11 using iChat v3.1.9 (Ralph pls help???)

    Hoping for some help here...
I have an iMac G5 power pc running 10.4.11 with an external iSight. My parents computer is a wintel running XP SP2 with a logitech quickcam orbit MP (USB). I am from OH and they are in FL. Never been able to get video chat to work but figured it was due to their (lack of) technical ability.
I brought my computer down to FL with me this week and set up a LAN using a D-Link 615 router and both computers currently have access to internet through a Comcast cable modem. Using my iChat and their AIM 6 was able to get full AV chat between us. I then mailed the iSight cam back to my daughter in OH who set it up on her Powermac G5 (ppc) running OS X.4.11.
Of course we were not able to get full AV 2-way chat working. The iSight is working on their end (able to see and hear themselves in preview window) the Quickcam is working on my end (able to see and hear myself in preview) but when trying to make the connection between the 2, (with either end inviting) I get a black video screen with no 2-way audio.
Another relative (nearby in FL) has a new Intel iMac 20" with built-in iSight and again, there are similar problems. When attempting to chat with them, regardless of invite direction, neither the video chat connection nor a "buddy talk" can be established.
I have followed previous posts in this forum and have edited the wintel's firewall exceptions scope for UPnP to "any".
Any guidance you can give , aside from "accidentally" destroying the wintel box, would be appreciated.
    Don

    I do have several hammers.
http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/starting_out/getstarted.adp#608 Is what AIM say about AIM 6.5 to iChat in Video chats
You seem to have done the XP firewall.
I take it that any routing device is also using UPnP ?
These pics don't make it clear where UPnP might be
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-615/iChat.htm
Are the Macs set in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5nmps ?
Restart iChat if you change it.
    Summary.
AIM themselves says this does not work for Video to iChat with AIM 6.5
Change the System Preferences > Quicktime setting
Make sure the ports for the Mac and the PC are open in any routing device. UPnP is best.
As this is Comcast set iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps

  • PS7 and Scratch Disk Full, using XP SP3 with 1 HD... how to fix?

I've searched the forum, yet couldn't find an answer or fix...  I installed my old PS7 on my new computer running XP with SP3 on a dualcore Intel, 1.5T HD (only one drive), 3Gb of RAM-- not enough money to upgrade PS, computer took first dibs...  PS7 refuses to open - after booting, comes up with a pop-up error stating the Scratch Disk is full, then shuts down.
My old system (W-2000, 20Gb single HD, with 1.8 Pentium processor, 1Gb of RAM) worked perfectly with PS7 - never had any problems...
I've tried all fixes possible...  HD is not even close to fragmented as is a new drive; not enough programs installed yet, or use on machine, for disk clean-up to be necessary; forced creation of the preference file (changed name to .old); and did the ctrl-alt-shift to boot to defaults.  No idea what is going on or why it would say scratch disk full.

    Uaphil wrote:
Actually, there are no partitions on my drive.  (I didn't realize PS needed a different drive or partition)  My old computer and HD didn't have partitions either, and worked perfectly.
Could it be an issue with PS7 and the size of the HD?  If so, is there a patch for this?
The point isn't that Photoshop needs different drives or partitions but that, as you suggest, the old PS 7 has problems with drives much bigger than were imagined in the days it was written.
However there are advantages in having the the scratch disk on a separate physical drive from the system drive where the paging file normally resides.
