Of course - I try to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 & now it's bricked.  Beautiful!

Ok so after a long wait to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 tonight, everything was done and right at the end it received an unknown error & could not install the update.  Now my phone is bricked with the picture of the charger plugging into the phone on the screen.
When I plug it in itunes wants to restore it to recovery mode - but this states that it will wipe the iphone & all data & install the newest version of iOS.
So will I be able to then load my previously saved iphone backup to the phone once I go through this recovery mode?  Or is all of my data & iphone settings lost at this point.
Does technology EVER work the way it's supposed to?!

Which version of iTunes are you running?
If it isnt iTunes 11, update. If it is iTunes 11, i would start by uninstalling iTunes, and of course reinstalling.
EDIT:
Also,
Try with another USB to Dock Connector cable if you have one on hand, just to rule out the cable.
On the same train of thought, make certain that your dock connection on the device is free of debris, and also corrosion (a bluish green colour accumulating on the 30 pins).
