Off-brand options for replacing SuperDrive ?

Hello all.
I have a MacBook Pro 17", late 2009 with a bad SATA Superdrive that I need to replace. I'd like to know two things:
1. Can I use any 9.5mm SATA slot-loading DVD drive?
2. Anyone have any suggestions that might be a fast or more reliable drive that the Matsushita that the laptop comes with?
I ask #1 because I am traveling in Colombia and anything Apple cost liteally 3X as much as in the states.

you may not like this suggestion but it may benefit you in the end. there are options to make your optical bay area, another HDD (or ssd) which can potentially expand your storage capabilities. so anything you're running via cd could be uploaded via any usb optical drive (except the apple made usb superdrive which will only work with the macbook airs and the minimac's), which will greatly reduce your carrying load but boost your storage space to digitally back up your optical information and allowing you to get any option of usb optical device.

these may all void your warranty since these are not apple supported.

I would also have a look at SugarSync (www.sugarsync.com), it provides the same services as Dropbox but is not restricted to having to place everything in the single folder to sync.
You can select which folders to sync on your machine, it is much more flexible.

If you have a Google account have a look at Google Drive, it comes with 5GB of space as well and is free. You can share your documents with anyone and even work with others on a document.

Options for replacing a phone outside of warranty

I have a phone that is out of warranty and isn't charging. I'd really like a working phone, but it looks like my current options are
1. Buy a new phone at full price. It looks like the Galaxy Nexus has been discontinued? If it's not, I think they run about $600.
2. Get a replacement thru vzw for $300
3. Cancel my contract entirely and eat the $300 or so fee (which might be cheaper than the replacement all in all?). Verizon wouldn't be excited for that, I think, but they would still get the fees either way.
...am I missing a cheaper/better option? I'm two months away from an upgrade. I guess I could try to do some home repair since the warranty is already over with and I've got nothing to lose. If i were to buy one on ebay or something, I'd be taking my chances with a phone that doesn't work and dunno how that works with transferring my sim and everything over.

Best option for replacing a faulty ATI Radeon x 2600 XT 256mb

My graphics card has just packed up, and I am struggling to find anybody at the Apple Technical Support service to give me a straight answer.
I am not a gamer, and only require a card that will allow me day today use and for general camcorder editing (novice level).
I had an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT - standard install. in my MacPro (early 2008) 2.8Ghz, Dual Quad Intel chipset, OSX 10.6 (snow leopard).
Can anyone recommend the best option for ATI card, as I have read theyh perform better than the Nvidia cards.

I'd get ATI HD Radeon 4870 Mac Edition from Apple.
The GT is more like spare or for 3 monitors. Why or how Nvidia got that card to be adopted as the OEM standard in a workstation, and not say GTS/GTX 200 series is, beyond me. One year ATI, next year Nvidia gets the "prize" seems to be the order of the day.
Nvidia drivers have been a problem for Apple for years, the GTX 285 would do some serious damage to 3D and CS4/5. Two dual width card design the way a Quadro CX handles CS4 for Windows to do realtime image rendering instantly.
I wouldn't flash unless you like to dabble or want to learn. In which case a 1GB card would make more sense.
Surprised though the manager didn't steer you toward the 4870.

How to switch off save option for endusers in Portal

how to remove save, cancel option when end user runs the workbook in Portal
and make some small changes like using page items or increasing rows and columns
I already made 2 changes
1) I removed the option in Oracle Enterprise Manager under discoverer viewer of saving
2) I also removed the option of Allow saving changes made in Viewer when adding workbook to portal
But still the end user gets options of saving when made small changes to workbook like increasing rows and columns
Is their any place, I need to make changes?

I guess that report RSWR_BOOKMARK_REORG can help as bookmarks are also created in BEx Web Analyzer when saving reports. Test it properly in sandbox/development environment before.

Turn off the option for users whether to sync mobile or network accounts?

Hi i have 40 users using mobile accounts, with no hassle for the last year as they were tied to the same machines. but this year they have to have the need to use which ever machine is available. The problem then is it keeps asking them whether to sync to mobile account or network account. They should only have a mobile account so i'm not really sure why its asking me? is there a way of turning off their network accounts or just forcing it to only sync mobile account? so confused... (just to clarify i don't want any of their accounts running off the server itself, i just want it to sync back to the server on login and log off which ever machine they are on. I'm just a little worried as i seem to remember someone choosing sync network account and it got rid of all their documents and files.

The problem was an error in naming the computer group. Renaming it solved the problem.

What connector for replacement superdrive - Mac Pro early 2008?

I have the 2.8 Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with the notoriously crap "super"drive. Naturally it failed when I wanted to install Snow Leopard. I want to replace it - solely for the purpose of this install - but for the life of me I cannot find what type of connector I need in a replacement drive. About this Mac says the optical drive "Interconnect" is ATAPI. ***? I think that means it's IDE, or EIDE, whatever the **** those are. Can anyone advise me on this? And perhaps what replacement to buy? Many thanks!

ATAPI and EIDE and IDE are essentailly the same for this purpose, and are talking about a 40-pin ribbon cable connector and a four-pin Molex power connector. Macsales.com can usually provide what you want.
The 2008 model used that same connector, but there is a Hedge inside on the motherboard nearby. Folks call these the ODD connectors (for Oprical Disk Drive) and they are two uncommitted SATA data-only connectors that can be accessed if you wnat to bad enough. Macsales sells a kit for this purpose.

Turning off "snap" option in Logic 8?

I'm brand new to Logic, making the switch over from Audition, which was the sole purpose that I owned a PC for the past 3 years in addition to my mac.
I'm still trying to get a feel for it. I was wondering...is there any way to completely turn off the snapping option, so I can move my audio files freely?

Apple RAM stopped working - should I buy Crucial for replacement (UK)

I just noticed my Mac Pro (Early 2008) 8 Core bought in early 2009 (just before the newer model came out has been running slow.
I've just checked and although 10 GBs installed - 2 x 1GB (Apple) and 4 x 2GB (Crucial).
I won't to replace the memory, but Crucial are only showing 4GB (2 x 2GB). Is Crucial still the best option for replacement in the UK.

I'm confused, RAM either works or it does not - it does not slow down with age or use.
In Activity monitor, are you showing many page outs? If your system is not swapping to disc with the amount of RAM you have, then adding more or replacing what's there will not speed up a thing.
If your RAM has actually failed, then sure, Crucial is a great source. Apple does not actually make RAM, they just buy from suppliers like all computer companies do. Often, Apple devices ship with Crucial RAM (or Samsung or Kingston - I've seen new systems with any of those in them).

Where in gods name is the homesharing button, I see a little cloud that you cannot click on and tells you what account you have but thats is. There's an option for turning on and off homesharing, but no button to access the actual library of the other PC

Both are logged in and both are registered for homesharing. however because apple keeps updating and moving things around for no reason there appears to be no way of accessing the homsharing button in the latest version of itunes. the website refers to " Once set up, all the libraries from your computers you've enabled Home Sharing on will show up in the SHARED area of iTunes:" well I have searched all over in the recent itunes versions and there is no "shared area" to be found.
Please find the attachment of a screen cap of my itunes.
If anyone can help by telling me where it has been moved to or if it even still exists that would be much appreciated.

And yet the link you posted only tells you how to do it on the Facebook App for Android. Nothing about the Facebook page is mentioned at all, or how to do it on an iPhone.
With that said, and assuming you have the most up to date version of the Facebook App, you can now turn the auto play feature Off within the Facebook App itself. Tap on the "More" icon on the bottom right, then scroll down to Settings->Videos and Photos->Auto Play. If Smart auto-Play is on turn it off. Then you can set the check mark on "Never Play Videos Automatically" which is the same as Off.
