Off Host Backup for Hyper-V

Hi<o:p></o:p>
We have a 3 Node Hyper-V Cluster with a Dell 6000
Equalogic SAN connected over 10 GB iSCSI. Actually we use Backup Exec 2012 for
Hyper-V Backup, but I am looking for a Off Host Solution to Backup all Hyper-V
over the San Network. Symantec support Offhost ore ADBO for SQL or Exchange but
not Hyper-V. I am looking for a new good Backup Solution for this Problem. <o:p></o:p>

What do you mean by "off host"? Do you want to have backup software running directly on top of EQL firmware? Or do you want to avoid proxy servers and have steady stream from EQL to backup storage?

  • Off-host backups

Hi,I am investigating using DPM2012 as a backup solution for our Hyper-v Cluster with HP P4000 SAN . We currently use HP Data Protector which has the facility to carry out Off-host backups and disk to disk backup. These options are license products
which costs a lot of money, where as DPM is included with System Centre.  DPM includes Disk to disk backups(guest and host) but is it possible to carry out a Off-host backup (Transportable). I have tested a hardware VSS backup but the data goes
over the management network where I would like to keep the data over the ISCSI network. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers
    Adrian

    Adrian,
I have DPM 2012 R2 backing up a HV 2012 R2 cluster. One of the SANs we have is a HP P4000. VSS hardware writers work..........but as you discovered...........the backups go over regular TCP/IP network...........not over iSCSI. Same thing happens
for our other FC connected SAN, a 3PAR 7400.
What I want is a Transportable backup, sometimes it needs an off-host proxy, like Veeam does.
HP says transportable backups can work on HP Dataprotector, NetBackup and Backup Exec. We gave up on Data Protector because of its huge cost. Commvault also does it but again, very expensive. Veeam does it, but in their own way...and of course it is
    pricey,,,,maybe not that much.
I am also looking for an answer....so far I see that DPM does not have this feature.

  • What is the best free backup solution for Hyper-V R2/2012? CSV support is necessary

    Hi,
    I need so guidance, please.
I’m planning to deploy a free backup solution for my virtual environment and I need your advice. I have the following configuration:
    Failover Cluster:
    Two Dell Servers
    OS: Windows 2012 STD
Each server has two AMD Opteron 4180 6C @ 2.6 GHZ
    16 GB – RAM (supports 256GB)
    QNAP NAS (CSV)
It’s hosting a DC, an Exchange 2010 and soon a SharePoint 2013 VM
    Standalone Hyper-V:
    Dell Server
    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter
It has two Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.2 GHZ
    16 GB - RAM
    It’s hosting 3 VMs
In my research I found these apps. All of them are limited in some way but they do the job:
    Veeam Backup Free Edition v7
    Altaro Hyper-V Backup
    Unitrends Enterprise Backup
    PHD Virtual Backup for Hyper-V
    HV Backup from CodePlex
    Windows Server Backup (WSB)
What is your experience with them? What would you recommend?
When it comes to money, which one is more affordable? (In case I want to buy the full version)
    Thanks in advanced.

  • Does turning off iCloud backup affect my photostream, contacts, and calendar wireless syncing?

I keep getting the announcement that my icloud storage is almost full, so I checked into managing my storage. If I turn off the "Storage and Backup" on the bottom, will that affect my contacts, calendars, reminders, and photostream wireless syncing? I don't want to pay to get more icloud storage.

No, that just means it will no longer backup your device to iCloud.
More than likely it's the amount of photos and videos in your camera roll taking up all that space, hence why your storage is almost full. You can manually backup these photos and videos to your computer and then turn off the backup for just the camera roll (you'll see this option under Settings, iCloud, Storage & Backup, "This iPhone" or device you have, and then you can toggle Camera Roll on/off, where it also tells you how big the camera roll is) and still continue to backup the rest of the device (Settings, apps, wallpaper, etc) to iCloud. Or just turn the whole option off and backup to iTunes instead.

  • Using Datasources.xml in backup of Hyper-V cluster and standalone Hyper-V hosts

    Hi!
I have a DPM 2012 server which I have used to backup standalone Hyper-V  hosts and Exchange 2010 server active DAG node. Since yesterday I have added Hyper-V cluster backup, and now I have generated Datasources.xml using .\DSConfig.ps1 on one of the
    Hyper-V nodes.
My question is: Do I have to manually add other protected data sources (Exchange, VMs from standalone hosts) to Datasources.xml? Or this xml is used only for CSV clusters?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
    Kruno

    Hi,
Yes, but the key is wrong - this is required as part of the csv serialization configuration.
On the DPM Server, Copy / paste below into notepad, then save as MaxAllowedParallelBackups.reg on the DPM server, then right-click and select merge.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\2.0\Configuration\MaxAllowedParallelBackups]
    "Microsoft Hyper-V"=dword:00000001

  • DPM Off site backup recommendations for all workloads without using tapes

    Hi All
I'm looking for recommendations for off site backups avoiding tapes if at all possible.
    My scenario is as follows:
We are soon to be migrating our backups to DPM 2012 R2 and will be backing up all workloads to disk, this will be around 10TB initially but could ramp up to over 30TB as more workloads are brought in.
What we would like to do is remove the need for tapes and shove our backups offsite onto some sort of cloud storage. We've looked at the obvious Azure online option but unfortunately this doesn't support all workloads (just File, SQL and Hyper-V).
We would need a decent retention period (7 years).
We'd like to go as direct as possible to the cloud from DPM without the need to locally double up or stage.
I'm very interested to know what's out there and what are people using.
    Cheers!

    Yes but...
As it's going to be writing potentially GB/TB of data to the VTL file it might not be the most efficient to go directly across the cloud. There are lots of issues latency, speed, contention, etc. to take in to consideration. Most of the Cloud Storage appliances
like StorSimple, BridgeStor, etc. have the smarts of cope with variables such as above. Once the complete file is on disk moving it to the cloud is relatively easy.
I agree that you'll be duplicating data but it would be far safer to write locally then move to the cloud.
A secondary is a good option too but as you're looking for long term retention, 7 years, then it may be very tricky with file data due to the 64 VSS snapshot limit. For other workloads it would be fine but would require a significant capital investment to
create the infrastructure as DPM doesn't play well with new features like Storage Spaces.

  • What would happen if I turn off my backup and delete backup data From my device? Will it delete my music and everything for ever or just stay in the cloud but not on my device?

What would happen if I turn off my backup and delete backup data From my device? Will it delete my music and everything for ever or just stay in the cloud but not on my device?

If you have multiple devices backing up to the Cloud, you will see all of them listed. You would click on each device to change what is backed up from that device. You can then delete your individual back-ups.
Once you have all your settings to your liking, you can then go back to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, and click on Back Up Now (bottom of the screen) to create a fresh backup with your new settings.

  • How to get low performances alert for Hyper-v Host ON scom

    Hello Expert,
We have to implement a scenario VM Live migration which involved (SCOM,SCVMM,SCORCH Parts).
where SCOM parts  will monitor the performances of SCVMM 's Hyper-V hosts and VMs running the within the Hyper-v hosts.
when the VMs utilization exceed the threshold and then scom monitor checks the performances of Running Hyper-v Hosts ,then using SCORCH automation ,VMs are moved to one of the best performances the Hyper-v hosts.
To implement this ,I have integrated SCOM 2012 R2 AND SCVMM 2012 R2 AND enabled the PRO Tips.
but don't know how to get alerts and configured related to performances of VMs and Hyper-v host.
What will be next  needed to achieved this from SCOM PARTS.
    Thanks and Regards

I'm running out of hd space on my MBP with Mavericks OS. How do I move my Photoshop 5 app off the computer for more space, and store the PS5 app on DVD or on my backup hd for a future reinstall on my next Mac with larger hd?
    Thanks

    slaglejrp,
perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

  • How to temporarily suspend backups for a host?

We are running production OSB backups for a site with approximately 50 filesystems,
consisting of full, incremental, quarterly archive, and on-demand archive backups.
    Our installation consists of
    o administration master - obtool version 10.4.0.2.0 (64-bit OEL 5.8)
    o media servers - obtool version 10.4.0.2 (64-bit OEL 5.8)
o SL8500 library - managed by ACSLS 8.1 with admin server attach point
    Problem:
We recently lost a ZFS storage appliance storage pool due to pool corruption.
All backed-up filesystems were restored to another host pending a rebuild of
    the corrupted ZFSSA.
Currently all backups are fail because they cannot communicate with the down
host. We want to suspend all attempts to back up the corrupted host pending
the rebuild. We have tried taking the host out of service via 'chhost -O'
but the scheduler launches backups that hang indefinitely with a session
    status of 'awaiting resource availability'.
Is there any way to suspend backups of a host temporarily without having to
remove it from all the schedules it's in? Seems there should be but I've
been unable to find this in the docs.
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    -pc

You can just comment it out of the dataset using a #
Then when you're ready to put it back, just uncomment it again.
    Thanks

  • Using a partitionned cache with off-heap storage for backup data

    Hi,
Is it possible to define a partitionned cache (with data into the heap) with off-heap storage for backup data ?
I think it could be worthwhile to do so, as backup data are associated with a different access pattern.
If so, what are the impacts of such off-heap storage for backup data ?
Particularly, what are the impacts on performance ?
    Thanks.

  • I am trying to decide on a HDD for off site backup

I am trying to decide on a HDD for off site backup, should I use a bus powered drive or  brick powered?  Should I go cheaper with a powered unit or convenience of a bus powered drive.  I would clone my computer and bring it to a friends house. I would do this 2 or 3 times a year just to have an off-site backup of my personal stuff.

How you connect the drive is really what will determine what in my opinion is best. If you connect directly to the iMac then get a brick powered drive. The reason being is iMac's are not known for supplying a lot of power from their USB ports and if you want your backup to be reliable it has to get good power. However if you are using a powered USB hub hanging a bus powered drive should be fine. I also think that if you are going to use the backup as a clone  don't get a USB drive, that's just plain not too smart. Yes it would work however the performance would be awful, if you run into a situation where you rely on that drive for a time to run your Mac you'll hate the experience. In that case get a good Firewire 800 drive which will provide acceptable performance, never as good as a SATA drive but decent performance none the less. That being said if you do decide to get a FW800 drive it will be powered by a brick as I don't thing there is such a thing as a bus powered FW800 port.

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.

AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.

  • Server 2008 R2 Windows Server Backup. "Error in backup of Hyper-V.vhd during read: Error [0x80070001] Incorrect function.

    Hello,
We are currently using Windows Server Backup to backup three Hyper-V guests running on a Windows 2008 R2 host.  Two guests are running Server 2008 R2 and one is running Windows 7.  I have the backups going to a dedicated external disk drive.
WSB backs up the two 2008 R2 Hyper-V guests just fine.  However, when attempting to backup the Windows 7 Hyper-V guest, I receive the following error:
Error in backup of <Windows 7.vhd> during read: Error [0x80070001] Incorrect function.
I ran a "vssadmin list writers" and all the VSS writers showed "Stable" with no errors.  I have plenty of space on the external drive as well.  I've read this article:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/973455?wa=wsignin1.0#workaroundissue12 except that doesn't seem to be what I'm experiencing here.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
As the other 2 guests could be backed up correctly, the issue should not be the Windows Server Backup feature.
First please refer to this article:
Backing Up and Restoring Virtual Machines
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd405549(v=vs.85).aspx
Please check if all following requirements are met. Specifically please check if Integration Service is installed.
Backup (volume snapshot) Integration Service is installed and running in the child VM. The service name is "Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor".
Windows 2000:  Backup Integration Service is not supported.
The child VM must be in the running state.
The Snapshot File Location for the VM is set to be the same volume in the host operating system as the VHD files for the VM.
All volumes in the child VM are basic disks and there are no dynamic disks.
All disks in the child VM must use a file system that supports snapshots (for example, NTFS).
