Off-line Media Files - Hour Glass - No thumbnail - JRL

I have Photoshop v5 and used get files from folders to bring in pictures from a DVD. For each of the directories I see a few thumbnails but most of the pictures show an Hour-Glass Icon. If I click on it the thumbnail appears but I cannot get all the thumbnails to show up. In the past I have been able to load pictures from a CD/DVD as proxy images and see them all. Can anyone please help.

is a techdoc originally written for PSE3 but it does apply to v5 also - however the numbers might be different.
This is probably what you are experiencing.

  • Reconnect with changed off-line media path

Hi.  I've had my catalogued images on a network drive for several years.  Recently had a major failure and re-built the drive, re-loaded from backup etc.
Unfortunately, since the overall requirements for the drive had changed over the years, when re-building I didn't re-create exactly the same folder tree as before.  While all my images are there (30,000+) and in the same relative tree as when they were catalogued, they are one level higher in the overall tree.  As a result, the catalog (PSE7) doesn't marry up with the path to the folders and Organizer displays a red 'off-line' media icon for every single image.  (None of the images is marked as needing to be re-connected since Organizer thinks the problem is the media being off-line rather than it being on-line but with a different path.)
With this many images, re-cataloguing the images isn't a realistic option.  What can I do to get Organizer to recognise the drive is not off-line media and that the images are all there but on a different path ?
    Thanks for any help.

To cut a long story short ... the original network drive was a Maxtor in RAID1.  When one of its HDD died, it instantly became unbootable.  Support told me there were no user replaceable drives inside and that as it was out of warranty to throw it away !   What's the point of RAID1 if you have to do that ?
Instead I downloaded hacked firmware and rebuilt with two new HDDs, then re-loaded from a USB back-up drive.  Had been running fine again since.  But its NAS functionality is limited compared to modern devices and I wasn't prepared to repeat the exercise when a HDD died again.  So I bought a new NAS, moved the HDDs into it, re-formatted, and re-loaded my Catalog from the USB drive again (ie. not from the re-built drive but from a backup taken before it failed).  Downtime for the whole thing was about a fortnight which I could cope with.  But the new NAS has different reserved share-names (as well as a different volume #) so I couldn't use the original names that are in the Catalog and anyway I wanted to split the data between more than one share to exploit the additional functionality.  So when re-loading I put the images into a folder tree starting at the share-name root rather than one level lower.  I expected to have to do a lot of "re-connect missing file" operations.
Instead I found that Organizer doesn't think they are disconnected, but off-line, so doesn't allow you to try re-connecting them.  Starting over with the missing tree level re-inserted isn't an option because I can't create the same root share-names on the new NAS anyway, and its volume # will still be different.  What looks to be needed is a way to get Organizer to accept the folders are online and allow me to re-connect the images, as if everything had happened on a local drive, not a network drive.
    Any ideas gratefully received.

  • Will Aperture search through "off-line" media

I've been looking through Apple's tutorials on project management and posting on another forum but still having difficulty getting an answer on this.
Currently, I'm using ACR and iView. Typically I'll store my digital photos into batches (either by project, vacation, or a range of numbers) and burn onto a CD or DVD when they reach a certain size (ie. enough to comfortably fit on a disk). I then use iView to build my catalogs and add keywords.
When I use iView to keyword search, it will search through all the catalogs (I have them stored in one folder). The catalogs don't have to be open. When the search is complete, it will open a new window with thumbnails of the images and the location (ie. "Digital Photos Disk 9").
The impression I get with Aperture is that the images have to be accessible "live". That is, on your HD or an external HD. The website says "Aperture tracks backup status and location of all images" yet says nothing - at least that I can find - about storing your images on CD/DVD.
My question is: Does Aperture work the same way as iView when it comes to cataloging (Project-ing) and keyword search?
    TIA

Yikes. Having gigs of images available "live" just
isn't an option for me. I would never let them sit on
a magnetic HD that's prone to failure anyway. Too
    many eggs in one basket.
    Maybe v2 ...
In the meantime I'll stick with iView (as much as I'm
not pleased they're part of the MS family now).
    Thanks for the info.
I understand your sentiment. But I'd throw a bit of caution your way. Optical media not reliable.
True, hard drives fail--all of them will eventually fail. Several of mine have. Indeed, so have a good number of optical discs, from DVD RAM to DVD-R/RW.
The key is to have your data backed up. I used to keep my images online on a hard drive, then back up to DVD...twice, just in case. But I never really had the time to verify the integrity of the disk. I've tried to read some a week or month later and it failed. This has happened on reputable brands, and off-brands with about equal frequency...and these were disks that verified after writing.
For me it's MUCH faster to have a set of hard drives I back up to and rotate the backups. I don't keep the backups online, so they won't wear out as fast. I keep them in separate locations to avoid natural disasters or theft. I rotate them regularly. Backup to a hard drive is convenient, fast, and relatively worry-free. Aperture Vaults make the process even more effective.
Even if Aperture offered to write to DVD's, I wouldn't...but that's just me. It's slow to write to, difficult/time-consuming to verify, slow to read to from, and I never know if it'll be around when I need it to. Archiving my DVD's was a big pain. Having transferred my older files from a portion of my previous DVD's to the "live" hard drive verified for me how tedious and time consuming it is.
I suppose it would be nice to write an occasional project to DVD from Aperture. But it is pretty easy using the Finder.

  • Why didn't RE-Connecting Off-Line Media connect the correct clip?

I opened a FCE project from autosave, after moving most of the media to my external HD, to do some work on it. A LOT of the media went offline but when I went to reconnect, the files were found and I hit OK. When I finished the process, and went to check it, most of the reconnected media wasn't the CORRECT edited clips. They were random clips taken from the original media.
Any guess as to why, or how to solve this?
    Much thanks.

What are the original file names? Did you move them or rename them? Are there other files with the same names somethwre on the drives? Can you use the reconnect function to point them to the correct files.

  • Removal of the Media is Off Line slide

How do I remove the red slide that says "Media is off line." It is showing up at the beginning of my project and I have tried everything I know of to remove it. I have tried cutting it, removing the slides in front of it, etc. Please help as I do not want that to be at the beginning of my video. Thank you.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
The Media Offline display typically indicates that the original file has been disconnected from the project. When you import media into a project, all you get are copies of the originals. And, those copies need to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when they were first imported into the project.
When you open the project, do you get a "Where is the file.....?" message related to this file that is supposed to be at the beginning of the project's Timeline?
What is the name of the file for which it is asking - the missing file name should be at the top of the message?
Let us say that you click Skip All to the "Where is the file....?" messages and find yourself in the opened project with your colorful Media Offline slide.
    Are you saying that
    a. you cannot right click it on the Timeline and select delete to delete it?
    b. if you go to the project media area, can you right click its thumbnail there and select delete...that should delete it from the project media area
as well as from the Timeline?
Let us stop here so that we can get in sync on the basic details of your situation and then we can better decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • Hour glass showing instead of thumbnails when importing new photos

I just started using Photoshop 10.  When I import photographs from my camera or from any other source, the thumbnails do not show in the catalog, I can only see an hourglass.
If I click on the hourglass, the picture opens and the picture shows perfectly, so the file is there. However when I close the picture an d go back to the "show all" the thumbnails still does not work, it only shows an hour glass.
This was not happening when I was using Adobe Photoshop 9 and I am still using the same Windows Vista computer.

Try selecting the thumbnails (Shift+Click) or (Ctrl+A) to select all, then click on the top menu
Edit à Update Thumbnail For Selected Items
If that doesn’t work close Elements and delete the thumbnail cache by navigating to:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\MyCatalog
In side the MyCatalog folder (or whatever name you gave your catalog) you should find a CACHE file:
    thumb.5.cache
After deleting that file restart the elements Organizer and wait whilst it regenerates thumbnails.
N.B. The ProgramData folder is sometimes a system hidden file, in which case please follow these instructions before starting.

  • Files missing or off line

I reciently downloaded dng files to a removable harddrive.
I can see them in Lightroom (library)but get a message that they are off line or missing when I open the develope module.
I can see them on the hard drive and when I attempt to import them LR says they are already there? I also noticed that about 300 of the dng files went to the harddrive without the jpg thumbnail.

The photos have either been moved, renamed or deleted outside of Lightroom. If they have been moved outside of Lightroom (or if the drive letter has changed, which can happen on Windows computers), then you reconnect them via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
By the way, re-importing photos is almost never a good thing to do. It is almost always a bad thing to do. I would advise you to get this idea out of your mind.

  • Files are off line now encoder wont work

I have been working on a slideshow in Premiere pro CS4 saved all my files went over to After effects for a day came back to Premiere and all of my files were off line I tried to reconnect them and it said files are to big (Something like that) so I deleted all of my projects and started over now Ive tried to export one simple photo for a slide show and does not show up in the adobe media encoder.Im not doing anything crazy here.Oh the pain
    Any help is appreciated.

OK, after you Scale your image, do a Render. Remember, previewing in the Program Monitor is just an emulation. To view for critical grading, a calibrated CRT TV monitor will be better. However, you can set your Program Monitor to display 100% (not Fit), and Display Quality to Highest.
Also be aware that the scaling algorithms in PrPro are not as good as those in Photoshop and offer far less control over the scaling. I do all of my resizing in PS, prior to Import into PrPro, and establish the exact size that I will need, usually the exact Frame Size as my Project, or calculated to the exact size that I will need, if I must pan on a zoomed out image. This ARTICLE will give you some tips on resizing in PS.
Hope that this helps on the quality issue, and good luck,

  • Thumbnails on Apple MacBook Pro are only hour glasses

I uninstalled Photoshop elements 10 and installed photoshop 12 on the same MacBook Pro but my image thumbnails only appear as hour glasses. I spent 2 hours with Apple Genius folks and they cannot figure out how to resolve the issue. hope you have some good ideas. Jim

You may need to clear the thumbnail cache which can become corrupted.
Launch the Organizer and from the menu click:
    Help >> System Info
Make a note of the file path for your catalog; then quit Organizer.
In Finder, navigate to the My Catalog folder (or whatever you called it) and find the following file:
    thumb.5.cache
Highlight that file and send it to the trash.
Then re-launch Organizer and wait for the thumbnails to re-generate.
Your file path should look something like mine:
    /Users/99jon/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/My Catalog/

  • Whatdoes it mean when the project I open has a red screen with different languages, media off line?

I finished my movied. and then tried to move everything into a new file labeled TAJE files.  Now when I try to open the last version of the movie, I get nothing but 2 of the title clips and then every clip is a red one with different languages saying something about media off line?  I deleted old copies but thought that was ok?
    Pam

Yes, if you have a completed DVD and just want to copy it then use disk burning software, not PRE. I use Nero and ImgBurn as my main burning applications - Nero is commercial, ImgBurn is free.
If you want to make extra copies over time you would be better to copy the VIDEO_TS folder from your DVD to your Hard Disk and then point ImgBurn at the folder.
For new projects requiring multiple DVDs to be burnt you would be better during Share to burn it to disk. Again, once it's there you can just point ImgBurn at it.

  • "media off-line" screen

When I opened my file (project)  all of the audio and video clips were replaced with "Media Off-Line" clip.  What's up?

    L3101
Details, especially version of Premiere Elements, computer operating system, and etc are important.
Pending more information, you probably moved or deleted the source media that went into your project after you saved closed the project.
Another explanation is that you stored the project media on an external hard drive and, after you saved closed the project, something happened to the external hard drive (one example, drive letter changed).
Please check out the merits of the Project Archiver found under File Menu/Project Archiver with its Archiver and Copy options.

  • Media Off-Line

I have read a few threads on the subject of people wanting to find media that went off line or what can be deleted with out harming the project. While all that was helpful, it did not answer all my questions. What I would like to know is if I have found the quicktime files how do I reopen them in Final Cut Express. I tried and it says the media is still off line. I am probably doing something wrong and would be very grateful for an easy step by step explanation.

I will tell you what I did.
I went to file reconnect media and choose one of the quicktime flies off of my scratch drive/disk and after that no errors popped up. However everything in my project still said media offline. So I dragged on of the clips onto the timeline and scrolled through it and the video played in the preview window. However everywhere else it said that the Media was offline even on the timeline while it was playing.
I don’t know if I am explaining this right.

  • Red slide that says "Media off line."

When I work on a project and close it and then bring it back up again, the slides at the beginning of my project are gone and a red slide that says "media off line" in multiple languages comes up and my introductory slides are gone. Please help as this is getting really frustrating. Thank you.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
The colorful media offline display indicate a disconnect between the source media that you imported into a project and the project file.
When you import source media into a project, all you have in the project are copies of the originals. The project needs to trace back to
the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when imported into the project. If you move, delete, or rename files and folders
that went into the project after you saved closed the project, you will get those media offline displays.
Another way to run into this type of issue is if you store your source media on an external hard drive and the external hard drive malfunctions, sometimes
    changing drive letter.
The reconnects can be complicated and a major nuisance. They are typically done via making selections in the "Where is the file_____?" messages or using the Replace Footage feature.
Please review and consider and supply more details so that we can customize a reply for you to get to the solution.
    Thank you.

  • "media off line" message when logging

When I'm trying to log my footage and organize it in clips I run into few problems:
First - the media in / media out markers do not show the correct time code - how do I set it correctly?
Second - when I click "log clip" it shows as "media off line". All the footage is copied into my hard drive. Why does it give me that message?

Final Cut Pro works with QuickTime .mov files. It also accepts avi but it can be clunky.
If the files are already on your drive, simply import them into FCP. Click on one of the files in the Browser and press command and 9 keys. You can add logging notes in the window that just popped up. To make clips, you can add makers and name them. The captured file will now have a disclosure triangle next to it. Click it to see the individual pieces.
It would help to know which codec was used to make these files -avi is not a codec.
Look in the format section of the Item Properties window (command & 9 keys) what does it say next to Compressor?
