Off loading photos and videos from ATT/US iPhone in Italy

Hi -
I'm taking my US purchased ATT iPhone 4 on a backpack trip to Italy to use as a photo/video camera. I have a regular, US customer ATT account - not a business or international account.
If I understand it correctly, to avoid getting socked with massive roaming and data charges I should:
- keep the phone on Airplane Mode,
- turn off Mail accounts and Push,
- turn off WiFi until I'm in a wifi zone (like a hotel).
I still have some questions.
What would happen if I left Location Services on so my photos would be geotagged? Does that incur data charges?
I'm planning on taking a LOT of pictures and I'm not bringing a laptop so my next biggest concern is -
what would be the smartest way to back-up the photo/videos somewhere safe, so I can delete them from the iPhone to make room for more images?
- If I use Photostream (only when in a wifi zone)- when I delete images from the phone they get removed from the stream - right?
- iCloud (only when in a wifi zone) won't store photos - will it?
Remember - I want to do this data transfer without ATT charges. Do I understand these things correctly??
Is there a portable iPhone hard drive I can use without a computer interface? That would be ideal - to just copy photos and videos over to an external box via "hard wire".

Moving photos from old iMac to memory stick

     Select All photos (which happens to be 2193 at the moment in my case)
     Drag Photos on to the Memory Stick icon
That is not moving an iPhoto Library. It will not retain Faces, Titles and lots of other metadata. That's moving the Previews (only) from one Library to a thumb drive and then importing them to another Library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I'll ask the same question that I posed
above - can you do this for Mail and iTunes?
Most certainly not. You need to ask on those forums for the correct way to move those databases.

I was trying to export a video from my Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) running latest version of OS X to my iPhone 5 (running iOS 8). I have tried everything in iTunes and iPhotos to be able to export Photos and videos to 'Photos' icon in my iPhone, but haven't got success so far. It's easy to do in a windows computer just copy and paste but I don't know how to do it in a Mac...

What are your settings on your iPhone for iCloud? Have you enabled iCloud Drive and iCloud Photo Library?
Then you are out of luck. With these settings, syncing of photos with your iPhone is disabled, so you can no longer sync with iTunes.
And the Photo Stream is behaving buggy and will not sync from your Mac to the iPhone.
Try, if disabling these settings and restarting the iPhone will help.
Otherwise, mail the photos or put them into Dropbox, until you can upgrade to Yosemite and iCloud Photo Library on your Mac.

Transfer iphoto photos and videos from one mac to another and retain all the titles and face names

Can I transfer an event of multiple photos that are in my iPhoto application on my macbook air (mid 2012) to my iPhoto application on my iMac ( mid 2011), and have the photos, after the transfer to the iMac, also retain all titles and other identifying data that had been added while on the macbook air? Using 10.9.5 OSX on both. Using iPhoto 9.5.1 on both. I did try this: drag and drop this event to a new folder on the desktop of the macbook air, the using Airdrop, drop copy of this event folder into the iMac. After the iMac displayed this file as completed received into the iMac, I then opened iPhoto to import this folder into iPhoto. The photos were imported, but without any identifying info, only the usual tag, such as IMG_4368. (Incidentally, the event of photos on the macbook air includes photos and videos taken on an iPhone 5c, and photos and videos taken on a nikon D3100. The photos that I transferred using Airdrop did show the camera meta data when Iclicked on the "info" button in iPhoto on the iMac) (Why did I do this in the first place? - While on a trip, I knew I would need to off-load photos and videos form my low capacity iPhone to the portable macbook air in order to free up space on the iPhone, and thought it would be easy enough to transfer to the high capacity iMac later.) I hope someone understands my question. In for example the app Viber, you can get up all the pictures and movies who has been sent betweet to persons. In iMessage or MMS on Apple you have to scroll back in the time to get it in the same way.

Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture: edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?" (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)

How do I get my wife's photos and video from her iCloud to my iPad. She no longer has an iDevice and I want to retrieve some really sentimental photos and videos of my grandson. I've logged on to her iCloud account on my iPad, but don't know what to do next.

Her camera roll photos and videos would be included in her backup. Restoring her backup to the iPad should recover them.
Start by creating a current backup of your iPad that you can restore your data from later. It's faster if you do this on your computer using iTunes; if you can't, create a backup in your iCloud account. If you can back up to your computer, do this by connecting the iPad to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Back Up. Then go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.
Then erase the iPad and restore her iCloud backup as explained here: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521. When it's done, import the recovered photos and videos to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Then erase the iPad again and restore the backup you made earlier, either from iTunes or from iCloud depending on where you backed it up.
If you want the photos back on the iPad, put them in a folder and sync them to your iPad by selecting the folder on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing. If you want to videos back on your iPad, import them to your iTunes library (File>Add to Library), then sync them to your iPad from the Movies tab of your iTunes sync settings. You will then find them in the Home Movies section of the Videos app on your iPad. Just so you are aware, photos that you sync to your iPad can only be removed later by syncing them off your iPad (by deselecting the folder on the Photos tab and syncing again). They can't be deleted on the iPad itself.

I am quite confused with how iCloud and Photo Stream work to transfer photos and videos from my iPhone to my PC. I recently ran out of my space on iPhone so I need to delete all of my pictures and videos but I first want to confirm that they have all been transferred over to my PC. I have iCloud setup but here lately I have been getting the warning message that iCloud could not perform it's backup because I was out of space on iCloud. If I delete something off of my iPhone is it deleted from the Photo Stream folder on my PC? Please help and thank you! I just don't want to lose any of my stuff!

You don't move them to iTunes or an iTunes account.
You should be importing them to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

I can't download photos and videos from my iphone

I have iPhone 4 with iOS 5. Can't download photos and videos from my iphone because my PC doesn't see it. Also my camera roll doesn't show right thumbnails and when i open a photo it shows it in low resolution. Only after i start editing it shows the photo itself in original resolution. iTunes recognises my phone but freezes on back up. When i updated my phone to ios 5 everything was wiped clear and i lost all of data that was in it. Please help me, i do not want to lose my data again.
I plugged it in to another pc (win7) but no files in DCIM.

appears to be one of the bugs associated with ios 5 that need to be worked out. (i had a problem where I had music on my phone, the phone didn't recognize the music but the computer could find it)
While I don't know how to fix the immediate problem, I have a workaround that will get you past this if you are willing...
My suggestion is to turn on icloud and photostream on your iphone, and download and install the icloud control panel on your pc found here

take a "picture" (quickly press the home button and lock button at the same time) of each picture on your device so they show up in your camera roll and will sync to your photostream cloud. This will in turn cause your pc to download the photos from your photostream cloud via the icloud control panel. Your photos will be on your computer, and you will never have to sync your phone to get photos off your iphone again.

When I restored my phone from icloud, half of my pics and videos have been deleted, the pics that were restored on my phone are very blurry, and the videos won't play. I have backed up to icloud and iphoto, however, some of the pics are no longer on iphoto either. Is there someway to get the videos to play on my phone again? I really would love to have them back, this phone is supposed to be the best and right now it doesn't seem to be. Please help if you can.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.

For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

I just did this after struggling with it for a while. When you are viewing your pictures on cloud go to all files. I suggest doing one folder at a time because it takes a while. Check the box on the folder then click on download. After that a pop up will appear click open. Highlight your downloads when it's finished and save in a folder on your pc. Hope this helps!

How to restore photos and videos from old Ipod

I recently got my iPod exchanged at the Apple Store. I restored it to my old iPod settings and everything restored: videos, apps, documents, everything EXCEPT photos and videos I had taken using the camera on my OLD iPod.
I'm nearly positive the photos and videos are stored on my computer somewhere, but they aren't syncing onto my new ipod.
In Summary. I took pictures on iPod #1. I synced iPod #1. I restored iPod #2. The pictures from iPod #1 don't appear on iPod #2.
Can you help me?
