Off the desktop?

While reading an email, I decided to save an attachment by dragging it onto my desktop. The problem is, the email window was open which left only a sliver of my desktop visible. I dragged the icon of the attachment onto the part of the desktop that was there, but now I can't find the file. Is it possible that the file was saved off the desktop in an area that I can't see?
Mahalo for your help!

If you are using the Mail application to access your email, you can avoid this in the future by using the "save" feature next to the attachment in your email--then you can choose where you want to save it without needing to try to drag to the tiny little space around the email window.

  • How do I stop my MacBook clearing the icons off the desktop when I switch off

How do I stop my MacBook clearing the icons off the desktop when I switch off the machine?

    Hi Matt
After I create say a word document, file it on my desktop and then shut down my machine. The next time I open up the MacBook the file icon has been removed from the desktop. I can still retrieve the file in a folder labeled with the month I created it. But why has the OS removed it from the desktop and how can I stop it happening?
It happens to alias icons as well!

Every time I turn my mac off, the desktop background changes. It always returns to the same picture, which was the second or third thing I changed my desktop to after getting my mac. I have background switching unchecked in my preferences, and I have never selected it as an option. Also, when I go to my preferences, it will show the icon of the picture I changed it to, even though the desktop itself has switched back.

I would start with some basic troubleshooting.
    REPAIRING DISK PERMISSIONS -
NOTE: refer to article "About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature" found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1452 - for the actual apple article on these step. ----
    - click finder in the bottom dock, and in the window that opens, select applications in the left column - scroll through until you see the 'Utilities' folder and double click to open it.  Then double click on 'Disk Utility'
    - When prompted to select a disk volume or image, select the 'Macintosh HD' in the left column
    - ensure the the "first aid" tab is highlighted blue in the middle of the screen
    - click the button at the bottom that says 'Repair Disk Permissions'
    - this process will take a few minutes to run.  It will indicate it's done, by scrolling to the bottom of the "details area" displaying 'Permissions repair complete'
Dan Frankes has written an excellent article for Macworld on "Permissions" and the need to repair them - see - http://www.macworld.com/article/52220/2006/08/repairpermissions.html.    Another good web site is - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html.

    - ensure the the "first aid" tab is highlighted blue in the middle of the screen
    - click the button at the bottom that says 'REPAIR DISK' .......NOT "Repair disk permissions"
    - this process will take a few minutes to run.  It will indicate it's done, by scrolling to the bottom of the "details area" displaying "The Macintosh HD appears OK"
If you get any other message OTHER than "The Macintosh HD appears OK", like "the Macintosh HD was repaired successfully" run the "Disk Repair" again, until it displays  "The Macintosh HD appears OK".
Once done, restart the computer as normal

  • Trying to get to app "off" the desktop, clamshell to internal display probl

I'm only seeing this problem with one application but it's a problem.
For a while now I've been running in clamshell mode with my external display at a fairly high resolution. I had an application window in the far right hand corner of my screen where I could use it as needed. I shut down and am now working from the internal display which has a lot lower resolution.
When I invoke almost all the applications, they are smart enough to realize the reduced desktop resolution and open somewhere on the desktop. However there is on application that is trying to position in the same absolute position which means I don't get any access to that application. I know the app is there because if I scroll from one panel to another in Spaces, I see the application window go by.
Is there any way to "scroll off" the desktop to that position and drag the app window back to the current desktop? The only solution I found was to remember to move the application to some other place on the desktop before I stop using clamshell mode.
    Thanks

Just hold the app down until the all start to 'wiggle', then drag the app or apps you don't want from your home page to a new page.
You can't delete it, or any of the standard iPhone apps, but this gets them out of your way.

Is it possible to delete off the desktop I will be using this phone for business, therefore I will not need itunes, appstore, game centre, weather, newstand, passbook, stocks, maps, camera, music etc. please advise.

The App Store has many useful business related apps: Word processors, spreadsheets, presentation apps, CRM apps. Maps is useful for navigating to appointments. Newstand for reading periodicals related to business.

There are several ways. The two easiest are to click the Junk icon to turn it off or right click the message and select Mart As-Not Junk.

  • Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

    Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.
    S.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

  • Is it possible to read information off the desktop and send it to java ?

Hello. I am wondering if it's possible with Java to read information off the
screen and send it to a java listener to be interpreted.
information such as comparable images (ie images that you can match with an
image you already posess in order to classify it) or simply text.. or colors
ie could I say for exemple be "listening" at a certain coordinate say 560x76
0 and whenever that pixel turns a certain color than that activates a functi
on and sends it the color data.
or I could be listening for any changes in a small box and whenever that are
a changes it copy/pastes its contents to be interpreted or compared
I know this is all pretty advanced.. and obviously it can be done but perhap
s not with java but I'm hoping someone knows if it can and could give me a p
ointer like a link so I can read up on it and learn how to do it.
thanks for you help in any case

have you considered that perhaps the casino enjoys the fact you have to make a small deposit before you can use one of these companies they have a deal with ?
hey is it so hard to believe that perhaps the casinos were the ones that came up with the idea in the first place and launched the first calculator products (discreetly of course).
casinos want to teach you to become a better player every way they can.. no matter how you look at it this always results in more profit for them
the calculators available right now are either bought for 40-60$ a piece or require that you specifically make a FIRST real cash deposit at one of the sponsored casinos. IE if you're already a real cash player at one of the casinos then the offer doesn't work, you need to sign-up elsewhere and deposit.
what do deals like that result in on a weekly, monthly and annual basis? millions of dollars through new sign-ups that otherwise would not of been. regulars of one site may become regulars of another site because they were coerced in having to deposit AND play 500 real-money hands in order to fully unlock their calculator's "free license",
I'd be willing to be that 95% of the time players end up blowing away their "first deposit" waaaaaaaaaaay before they reach the 500 real money hands (heck I made it to 200 hands with my 50$ and I'm sure most don't make it to 50!). So on average it means that for each new calculator user the casinos make a minimum of 100$ and probably much much more.
if you don't see the marketing catch in it then you're just not looking at it through the money-hungry glasses everyone in the gambling industry wears today
it's fact that they directly profit from this.. as well as all the other poker advertising and propaganda that we're flooded with today.
to answer your question now.. well.. if it were that easy then they and their business partners would be losing millions anually over the lost opportunity

  • How to clear off the desktop too many items

On my MacBook Pro Retina is there a fast way to save all the items,ie. remove them from the desktop and save them in a swift way arrange does not work. It looks like my real desk!

Yes. Select as many items as you want, then select "New Folder with Selection..." from the File menu.
You can also control-click (or two finger tap, or right - click) to bring up a contextual menu. That choice will be the first one shown.

  • How to delete an app off the desktop, without removing it from the dock

Yep. I thought you would just drag it to the trash (like Windows) But when I do that, it deletes the whole Application.

    Hello there ...
When you move files or apps from the desktop to the trash that is what you are doing, trashing them. If you want to keep the application (and keep it's shortcut in the dock, 'cause that what the dock is ... Shortcuts ...), then move the application either into /Applications or your user folder, then the dock shortcut will remain and the app will still work, but just not be on the desktop ...
Hope that makes sense and helps ...

  • Getting Files off the desktop

We have a student login with no set password, set up with parental controls restricting system and finder. There are 3 files on the desktop that have been downloaded by a student. We are trying to put them in the trash. When you do, it asks for the student password of which there isn't one . . . been working on this for like 3 hours. Going slightly crazy. Help.

OK, then here's a somewhat roundabout solution:
Boot into single-user mode. After the white text scrolls by you will have a command line prompt. Carefully enter the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Users/"studentacctshortname"/Desktop
Note the quotes are used in case there are spaces in the short name.
    ls -al
Will list the files on the student account Desktop.
    rm -rf filename
Repeat this line for each file you want to delete. If there are no other files on the Desktop then you can remove all of them at once using rm -rf *
    ls -al
    Verify files are gone.
    reboot
