Off topic! Which snare do you like best for recording?

Hi,
I'm doing some drum recordings using a KM184 (sometimes CS1000) and an e904 bottom side of the snare (phase flipped). I didn't like the sound of the e904 on top so I decided to choose a KM184 which sounds nice.
Now: Whats your experience, which snares and which drumheads do you like best for recording Rock, Pop, Funk?
Any feedback appreciated.
Eddie

Hi, I planned to purchase a laptop for me to use for graphic design ..could let me know which laptop would be the best for me to use ? Thank you! Pro or Air

Someday - and no one knows when that day will come - maybe all applications will be able to take advantage of the Retina display. But for the present, not many do: including all Adobe applications. There was a demo of Photoshop at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference of Photoshop running at native Retina resolutions but no one at Adobe in marketing is saying when, if or how the upgrade may be coming. It could be a week, it could be a year, it could be 2-3 years. No one knows. And only Apple app's (for the main part) are really utilizing the native Retina display.
I've seen some demos of some applications (Apple's) that take advantage of the Retina display and they're awesome. But in actually working in the here-and-now I've heard quite a few gripes, particularly on the Photoshop forum, of menus looking pixelated and/or 'blurry' so I'm not quite ready to jump into the Retina display boat just now. Don't get me wrong - others have ad are very, very pleased with their selection. But until Retina displays are available on larger monitors, the maximum work area that you're going to be able to use is 15" - and that's simply not enough room for full-blown graphic design. Then there's the cost factor - for the $4,000+ you spend for a completely full-blown Retina kit, you can get a standard MacBook Pro, 16 GB of RAM, a fast SSD and even the Apple Thunderbolt Display for the same amount.
The standard MacBook Pro isn't better than the Retina display: it's just different. And I think (and this is only my opinion - other graphic designers should feel free to jump in here) that it's the best computer that you can get for your specific purposes. And, towards that goal, I have to recommend a very good external monitor (there's nothing more annoying than having to use InDesign in a single-page mode rather than side-by-side because your monitor isn't big enough).
Remember that this is only my opinion and that others might jump in with their own. But I was in the electronic pre-press business for more years than I care to admit and we always - always - worked with at least 19" monitors (and that's back when dinosaurs actually ruled the world).
I hope that others will jump in with their comments. I'm going to follow this thread and see!
    Good luck,

  • Which mac may be the best for me?

as of now my budget is 3k
im still trying to decide between mac/windows
the mac side of it im looking at a 15'' pro 17'' pro and a 24'' imac.
im wondering if some one could give me the plus minus on the screen size, i tried talked to an apple sales person over the phone, she sounded more like she wanted a date than to sell me a mac. The nearest mac store is about 2 hours away, so its kinda out of the question, ive been soaring over the site for the last week.
i cant decide.. so i thought i would ask some experts.
please give me your knowledge or your opinion. They will both mean a great deal to me.

    Gaming
    Selling real estate

mk now that you know... RESPOND

    Tyner,
The ideal thing would be to wait until you could make it to the Apple store, and have a cursory look at OS X. Failing that, the next best would be to go to a Barnes and Nobles (or equivalent), sit down with one of the "Missing Manual" OS X books (by David Pogue), and give it a good scan for the kinds of things you could expect in OS X. The "Missing Manual" books are fantastic for turning a "noob" into a power user, but they also stand as a very good preview of what to expect.
You are not likely to find someone here that prefers Windows, quite the contrary. Those of us who are long-time, "die hard" Mac users might go further to say that we absolutely hate Windows. In my case, my distaste for Windows is not due to any neurotic allegiance to a particular OS, but to the fact that I am used to the ease and power of OS X, and Windows simply doesn't measure up. It's not that one can't do the same things in Windows that one can do in OS X, but that it is often much more difficult or time consuming. I'm not even mentioning those annoying pop-ups and messages.
With one exception, all the things you mention will be great in OS X. The exception might be real estate. From what I understand, some of the online resources necessary to real estate agents will only work in IE for Windows. This is not due to a failing in OS X, but to the fact that these websites do not use universal web standards. It's too bad.
Also, while games run very well in OS X, there are simply not as many ported to OS X as to Windows. This might or might not be a concern for you, based on exactly which game titles you prefer. For example, Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey, Command & Conquer, etc. all have Mac versions, and run extremely well. Check for your specific titles.
All this said, perhaps the strongest argument for you would be the fact that you could always run Windows on your Macbook Pro (or iMac). Doing so (while I don't prefer to recommend it) would make the question of compatibility/usability for real estate and gaming a moot point.
Whether or not you go with a portable is really an entirely different question. My guess would be that, for school, a portable would be almost a necessity.

  • Which Pair of NIke+ Shoes Best For Running

I usually run 3-4 miles a day, mostly on concrete and sidewalks, which pair whould be the best for this? I was looking at getting the air max moto IV, what do you runners think of these.

I bought the Air Max Moto IV shoes. The verdict: they're ok, I guess. On my first run, they performed OK, but with a little more wear, I really noticed the flaws: very little support around the toes being the primary culprit.
Frankly, Nike running shoes suck. I wasn't too thrilled with the other pairs I tried on. The Air Max Moto felt the most like any other normal running shoe. I was tempted to buy the Moire sneakers, but the arch support was too high for my comfort. The Moire sneakers are also a whole heck of a lot lighter too.
Its too bad that other running shoes aren't officially compatible with the nano because dollar-for-dollar Nike shoes just don't cut it.
Oh, and I can definitely feel the sensor in the shoe when I run.

  • Which KVM switch is the best for Mac Mini

Base on individual experience, which KVM switch is the best for Mac Mini

Hot-Key mode MacMini and IO Gear KVM Switch MiniView Micro USB Plus
    Fusionwolf, can you help me?
I want to use my TFT monitor (HPvs19 ) with a MacMini and a Casablanca KRON PC. The monitor works good with both computers, when connecting them separately.
I've bought a KVM switch MiniView Micro USB Plus (IOGear GCS632U) connected it as written in the IOGear Installation Manual. Now I can use the monitor with my MacMini and my Mac keyboard, but I cannot switch to the PC.
In the IO Gear manual several methods to switch ports are written. But every method starts by invoking HotKey mode.
    The manual reads :
"To invoke HotKey mode, do the following:
    1. Press and hold down the NumLock key
    2. Press and release the minus- key
    3. Release the NumLock key"
    and
"When HotKey mode is active, the Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock LEDs flash in succession to indicate that Hotkey mode is in effect."
I've tried many times to do this pressing/releasing on my Mac keyboard. Within different time/speeds. But with no result... I CANNOT get in the HotKey mode...
What can I do? Are there other ways to get in HotKey mode with my Mac keyboard (bought with my previous iMac some 4 years ago)? Or are there other ways of switching with the IO Gear KVM Switch?
Thanks a lot in advance for an answer!

By the way, I have tried shutting of the display switching in the power settings.  That was basically the only real answer I found anywhere.  It didn't work.

  • Which portable apple product is best for music quality

My old 8 gig nano died, and I have a 3rd generation ipod touch that's a bit slow to respond.  I want a faster Apple product to listen to music, specifically AIFF encoded files for meditation.  I have a 10.6.8 Mac and Itunes 10 (Do not care for v11) and between the 4th and 5th generation iPod touch, Ipad Mini, or iPhone, which of those devices is best for playing 1 hour long AIFF files? Thanks.

many of the portable dvd players have what is called ipod docking, which means it "slips" into a recessed area. This omits the need for any cables.

    Hi Quinn7,
Was the one which you were upgrading from a Educational version? If so, that might be related. I'd recommend reaching out to our support for assistance. I think there is a link for chat or phone on the bottom of the plans page: Creative Cloud pricing and membership plans | Adobe Creative Cloud

  • Which encoder do you like to use?

    Hi,
I need to do some high quality encoding and would like to hear some opinions about which encoder you like to use.
Compressor seems pretty good, but there must be some reason the competition is able to charge more for their offerings.
    BitVice?
    MegaPEG.X?
    Hueris MPEG Pro?
What other options are there (besides dedicated hardware encoders) ?
    Many thanks.

Hi Phillip - don't get me wrong, Compressor is just fine for a lot of encoding work, but when I go back to thinking about v1 it just wasn't reliable for encoding going to replication - there were far too many glitches and anomalies in the data it produced, notably fairly large bitrate spikes which caused the playback to falter. When you are needing to encode reliably and get things out of the door fast, this kind of issue is way too serious...
On top of that the standard output of compressor was milky - fairly washed out look which needed you to tweak the gamma setting. Whilst easy enough to do, it was another set of mouse clicks.
Finally, Compressor was not very good at CBR encoding - it varied too much from the bitrate for my liking.
Some of these issues can be seen in BitVice - I occasionally do still get spikes in the encode, but it is very rare. The output from the default settings is very good, and with the digital noise reduction tool I can get a super smooth looking encode from most material. The reliability of this makes BitVice a very good option.
Procoder is PC based, which introduces a new dimension. In most tests, the CPU on my PC will crunch numbers happily all day, and fast. The Mac is far better at a lot of things, but in raw grunt my PC is quicker (I need a new Mac, obviously!) This means I can use FCP to be creative, and pass the footage to the PC for encoding, leaving the Mac free to continue what I was doing. Procoder is also an excellent encoder and the output from it is rock steady and reliable, time after time. I happen to like the look of the finished MPEG, too - very clear and crisp and very seldom any glitches. If I set it to CBR encode, that's what I get. It seldom varies from the min and max I give it for VBR too, and there are plenty of post production filters to iron out glitches I miss at editing. It also does a pretty good standards conversion when I need it, certainly far superior to QT based tools I have thus far used (not including the Nattress filters). In short, it knocks spots off Compressor for the way I work.
So, speed, convenience, reliability and quality of output - each of these are important and relying on Compressor only doesn't give me the options I like to have. Compressor 2 is a good enough encoder, but have a look on the compressor forum to see what the issues are! Then head over to Innobits.com and check out the BitVice forums... I have to say that Compressor 2 is a very different beast to v1, and much, much better than it's predecessor, IMO (although not without it's problems).
The thing is, if you are happy with what you are seeing from your encoder and like the way it works then there's no need to change. If you want to have alternative options, or your work flow is a bit different, then perhaps Compressor alone isn't enough.
Quite apart from the technical differences I did create a disc with encodes from different softwares and play it to some colleagues who don't do video work. I asked them to compare the image with the original footage and say which is closest, then to say which image was 'better' to look at. Every time Procoder came top, BitVice second and Compressor last. I guess I ought to repeat this very unscientific and largely unreliable method and include MegaPEG.X in it now, too. I was only hoping for a bit of a straw poll on what an 'average' consumer might think was a good picture, I wasn't looking at in-depth comparisons. It was, however, good to get a range of opinions from a pretty unbiased group and confirmed my own thoughts about the output from the encoders.

  • Would Like to get an iPod but not sure which one would be the best for me..

i have done some research on the iPods, the easiest to use, which ones are best for fitness workouts, etc. I had an iPod Classic sometime ago but I ruined it because I tried to install the program it came with but it was already installed and the second install I did ruin it. At least this is what the genius bar guy said.
Anybody who knows iPods fairly well. I am new to my MacBook Pro and I would like to be able to synch the music in iTunes with the iPod for music for various activities. I also have trouble with the ear phones that come with the iPods, so I was looking at a website that had earphones ranging from $300 to $500 approx for people who have various needs in addition to using them at studios while mixing new music. I just want a pair that will stay in my odd shaped ears, have great quality, and work well with the iPods.
Any recommendations on iPod for exercise. I am not big on videos but having some good music gets me through a hard workout. One problem I have is that the genus guys could not fix the multiple setting, software, preference settings, etc. that had become corrupted in my old Mac and because several genius guys could not fix the numerous problems they gave me a new MacBook Pro. However, they recommended that since my problems were all setting, software issues and problems I have add with adding music in iTunes, that none of my pictures, music or setting be transferred to the new MBP but to start over. They did not even save any of my iTunes and pictures which I thought was odd but what could I say since they were giving me a new MBP. If anybody has a legal way of transferring from my friend;s iTunes the music he has that I can use for the yoga and mind-body classes I teach, which I am getting nervous on because I start the classes next week. I do not have the money to buy the yoga and other fitness music in hours like I use to have. My friend will let me transfer some of his music that he had from his own cds and some but few from iTunes, but that I could get them on myTunes if I could find out how to do that.
I researched that and since my friend did not care about atwork, artists of the songs on one cd, for example, the genre, tracks, artists, etc. he does have some but I would want to do the research and get the artwork and the titles of the various songs, the tracks, and all the info one gets when they transfer a new cd to iTunes. I had this problem with some of my old music but with google images, and finding the cd online I was able to get all the CDs accurate, even the double CDs that iTunes would have as one cd, but I figured out how to get them to one cd.
The ways ITunes Help advices on moving songs from one iTunes to another computer with iTunes, they recommend an iPod, transferring them to a DVD and burn the DVd on to my new MacBook Pro, with several other option that were beyond my ability to understand. If anybody has suggestions how to get my friend;s songs to my iTunes so I can have enough New Age and Yoga music for the classes that start next week, I would really appreciate it.
I also want to start backing up using time Machine and LaCie Rugged hard disk FW, USB, 400 0r 800 FW, 7200 speed, usb, etc. I am not up-to-date on the speed of the LaCie and if the 7200 speed would be a waste of money. Any recommendations for getting this device, not hooking it up to a wireless devise but to the Time Machine. If it does not come formatted for the new MacBook Pro and is it a big deal formatting the hard drive so I would be able to start using it right out of the box. Any suggestions n the iPod, and the LaCie rugged external hard drive would be a hugh help. I cannot afford a Time Capsule right now so I though the LaCie would be the next best thing
    Thanks!!

There appear to be comments that sometimes the training from these institutes doing the WDP course can be of very variable quality. Probably the only option here is to seek out the opinions of recent psat students you can trust.
